Toledo, Peoria & Western Railway

The TP&W, sometimes called the Tip-Up by those in the business, has roots dating back to antebellum times. Later, as I understand it, the road became a bridge line between the Pennsylvania Railroad (at Effner, Illinois, on the state line with Indiana) and the Santa Fe (at Lomax, Illinois). Its western terminus was across the Mississippi River, at Keokuk, Iowa.

In any case, here are some interesting and intriguing locomotives seen in East Peoria during the latter half of the 1970s—numbers 205 and 202 are both Alco RS2s, number 400 is an Alco RS11, number 900 is an EMD GP35, number 800 is an Alco C424, and lastly number 902 is another EMD GP35—with Alco trucks no less.

Construction of Keokuk's First Bridge was completed on 11 April 1871.

After the end of the Civil War in 1865, the businessmen of both Keokuk, IA and Hamilton, IL  believed that railroad traffic through the area would benefit both cities.

On 19 January 1869, The Keokuk - Hamilton Mississippi Bridge Company entered into contracts with the 4 railroad companies (Indiana Central Company, the Peoria Company, the Des Moines Company, and the Toledo, Wabash & Western Railway Company) who agreed to construct the first combination roadway and railway bridge across the Mississippi River.

The construction contract was awarded to the Keystone Bridge Company of Pittsburgh, which was one of Andrew Carnegie's first business ventures, at a cost of $850,000 (about $16 million in today’s money).

Carnegie invested heavily in stock of the Keokuk-Hamilton Mississippi Bridge Company & became its president. Steel from Carnegie's steel mills was used in its construction

The total length of the bridge was 3800 feet and accommodated railroad cars, horse and wagon teams, and foot passengers.

A locomotive named the "Iowa" was the first to cross the Keokuk - Hamilton Bridge on 19 April 1871, and the bridge was opened to the public on 14 June 1871.

KSc-2015-1801 por NASA Kennedy Por Flickr: A Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway GP40-2, an FEC freight locomotive used in regular service, passed by the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The FEC locomotive is transporting the last two NASA Railroad locomotives from the center. The two locomotives, EMD SW 1500s, will be delivered to new homes on short line railroads. Locomotive no. 1 will be used by the Natchitoches Parish Port in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Locomotive no. 3 will be used by the Madison Railroad in Madison, Indiana, for regular freight service and passenger excursion train service. Locomotive no. 2 has already been delivered to the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in Miami, Florida for restoration and eventual use. All three locomotives were originally acquired by NASA in 1983 from the Toledo, Peoria and Western Railroad. Southbound Saluki

This is Amtrak 391, the Saluki, just north of Gilman, Illinois. If one looks in the distance in the first three images, one will see two massive coaling towers from yesteryear. The train, zipping down the former Illinois Central mainline, will soon clatter over the crossing with the Toledo, Peoria & Western.
