Underbelly: I see you
Anyone whoâs ever read more than a couple of sentences Iâve written knows that I hold Edinburgh to be something precious. The problem with precious things is that they are also fragile. The things which make them precious often exist in a delicate balance. Itâs all too easy to upset that balance and lose that which makes them so special. To throw the baby out with the bathwater, as the saying goes.
Thatâs why I moan so much sometimes. Some of my friends are happy to indulge me, others roll their eyes and gently chastise me. I value both responses: itâs important to feel your contribution is valued, but also important to be challenged and subjected to contructive criticism.
But indulge me for now. Iâve stated before that Edinburgh is under attack. I hold my hands up: this is sensationalist language designed to provoke an emotional response. However, I believe it to be true.
As so often, those who are responsible for attacking the precious thing are probably ignorant of the damage they are causing. Because they are just that: ignorant. Utterly, completely and comprehensively ignorant.
Like most Edinburgh folk, I first became aware of Underbelly as a company involved with the Fringe. Responsible for booking venues, hiring acts and managing ticket sales. There are obviously quite a few companies doing exactly the same thing, so it was unremarkable. Fair play to them.
But inexplicably, Underbelly has branched out well beyond the parameters of the Fringe. They now reach, like an octopus spreading its tentacles, into every aspect of Edinburghâs winter celebrations too.
They control Edinburghâs Christmas Market, the Torchlight Procession, the Hogmanay Street Party and were behind the Street of Light in 2015 and 2016 (see earlier blog).
In its first year, the Street of Light was hugely disruptive to businesses and residents on the Royal Mile. The same year, 2015, Calton Hill was closed to Hogmanay revellers for the first time in its history. The excuse given was that it was unsafe - the truth, many suspected, was that Underbelly didnât want folk getting a good view of the fireworks without paying for the privilege of attending the Street Party on Princes Street.
Of course managing the shutting down and ticketing of an entire city centre requires an army of staff. This year we learned that Underbelly doesnât even want to pay them. They are relying on volunteers to do their dirty work.
They like fences. One thing Iâve noticed about every Underbelly event is that there are miles and miles of metal fences. They like to fence the paying public in, and fence everyone else out. Theyâd fence off the entire city if they could, and charge everyone for entry - tourists and residents alike.
Cities have been held hostage before, but normally by armies at their gates. Itâs a strange thing, and surely unique to Edinburgh - a city held captive by a corporation. How can one company have such a stranglehold on a city? Able to fence off vast sections of the city centre, restricting movement of people and goods? Seemingly immune to the complaints and concerns of those of us who have to live and work here every day.
There must be corruption somewhere. And oh, I know I have to be careful. I have no proof, and can afford no lawyers. But common sense tells me there has to have been back-handers or brown envelopes somewhere along the line. How else can one company have such a monopoly on the life of a city? Yes, I know theyâre not alone - donât get me started on the Gold Brothers...
This is what I mean when I say the city is under attack. Perhaps ironically for a city so steeped in financial institutions and the headquarters of two large banks, it is corporate monopolies that are now Edinburghâs nemesis.
Yes, Edinburgh is under attack. As surely as in any of the great sieges or sackings of the past. We are living through a corporate Rough Wooing. The enemy is not a bloodthirsty army wielding weapons of war, but ignorant club-footed money men who see this precious thing as a cash cow to be milked dry.
I name Underbelly, and denounce them as an enemy of the city.

Hogmanay is coming and we thought we would give you a little heads up. Last day of the year, should be started with cleaning. Remove debt, burdens, dirt and ash from the previous year. Start 2018 fresh and new! Clean the home, payoff debts (modern times this is less likely), clean the ash from the fireplace! Enjoy the evening with a Ceilidh or just partying with family and friends, or in the streets with alcohol and fireworks đ! First footing after the bells is essential! Bring your own Stonehaven Fireball Swingers to your gathering! Have a torchlight procession lead by the Vikings in your life! However you celebrate, naming it Hogmanay or New Year's Eve, we wish you a happy, safe, and incredible evening and a Happy New Year! #hogmanay #newyearseve #scotland #ceilidh #firstfooting #uruz #norsehighlander #kiltedviking #vikings #torchlightprocession #highlandgames #highlandathletics #liftheavy
