Getting the Charger to Le Mans
Tumblr media
In order to get the Charger to Le Mans, Herschel McGriff had a special trailer built by his crew. As Dick Pierson recalls it, this trailer, when loaded, was quite a challenge to tow, due to its weight and the extra length. Dick knows best about it, since he traillered the whole rig alone from Portland, Oregon to Norfolk, Virginia in just five days. Due to the overhang, there was no way you could drive the Charger up there, so Herschel used a forklift to get it aboard!  In front of the Charger was a big crate with the two spare engines, a 426 wedge and a 426 HEMI, as well as another even bigger case with all other spare parts and racing tools. Needless to say that the whole thing weighed more that five tons! Dick did well towing that rig, until it almost broke in half in West Virginia! Thanks to a very talented welder there, the whole thing came back together. It was jacked up on one end, in order to close the gap and then huge amounts of welding wire was uses to tack it back into one piece. In order to thank the guy, Dick fired up the Charger, which pretty much woke up everybody in the neighborhood. Hopefully, it stayed in one piece, until Dick got to the Virginia seashore. There RJ Reynolds, NASCAR's major sponsor and manufacturer of Winston cigarettes, took over and loaded the everything on a freight ship to France.
