While visiting San Francisco, we tasted some great wines at Bluxome Street Winery, in a neighborhood known as South of Market or SOMA. We loved that we were able to walk to this winery from our hotel in under 25 minutes. Bluxome Street Winery is an urban winery located in the heart of SOMA, where you can taste wine without leaving the city. Bluxome sources most of its grapes from low yield vineyards in Sonoma County. But they also own a Russian River vineyard named Balinard. As the location suggests, Balinard is planted with Pinot Noir grapes and farmed organically. Lining the edge of the town of Mendocino is Mendocino Headlands, State Park. If you have the chance to go to Mendocino, we recommend visiting this state park. The wildflowers and scrub of this state park blanket the edges of town, where gentle trails and rugged coastline lead to quiet beaches. Subsequently, Mendocino Headlands State Park surrounds the picturesque Village of Mendocino on three sides. We were amazed how blue the skies were and how blue the water was. The San Francisco waterfront offers plenty of places to stop to grab a coffee, something to eat, or just observe the comings and going of the bay. San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is lovely. This is the Conservatory of Flowers, the oldest building in Golden Gate Park. The Conservatory was originally bought by an eccentric millionaire, James Lick. He bought the conservatory as a prefabricated building but never had it erected. Then in 1876 he died, with the greenhouse still in crates. It was a cool but sunny day when took a segway tour through Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. This was the best tour we did in SF. When we arrived they gave us lots of training and then one by one they made sure we could operate the segway. After about 45 minutes to an hour we began our tour. While traveling through Butte Montana we visited Headframe Spirits. Headframe Spirits has a great tasting room for you to try their spirits. On our visit, we met John and Courtney Mckee, the husband and wife owners. We learned that they are not just concerned with making great spirits, but they are interested in using their business as a force for good – good for their employees, good for Butte, and good for Montana. For our visit, it was mid day and the tasting room vibe was like a family living room rather than a bar. Headframes innovated still creation allows for more cost-effective and efficient production of alcohol. Their stills are viewable from the tasting room. Montana has some interesting drinking laws that help encourage the start-up of small breweries and distilleries. Breweries can serve up to 48 ounces of beer, and distilleries can serve up to 2 ounces of alcohol per person until 8 pm. Thus calling them tasting rooms rather than bars. John and Courtney love these restrictions.
