Smithers Street Pianos
Smithers has recently joined the cities of Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa by installing two new public street pianos. Both pianos were painted by local artists and are open for anyone to play and fill the air music.

The first piano is situated right in front of the Smithers Museum and Art Gallery on the corner of Highway 16 and Main St. It's grand opening was on July 6th and a had a great turn out. Since its introduction to Smithers, many locals and tourists have tickled the keys with their fingers.

The second piano, painted by local artist Mark Tworrow, was sent up to a much more unique location, up on the south side of Hudson Bay Mountain to the popular hiking destination Crater Lake.

On Friday July 15th, many brave Smithereens, including myself, woke up early to hike up the mountain to witness the piano being flown in by helicopter. Due to a low cloud ceiling the arrival of the piano was delayed, which was ok for me as I got to explore even more of the mountain!

The piano did eventually arrive by helicopter and landed safely on the mountain. Although many people may find it odd to have a piano on a mountain to quote the words of Smithers Street Piano organizer Laura Hols-Wimbush "we are mountain people, we are music people, and this piano represents Smithers in both parts".

So if you find yourself in Smithers this summer and want to see a beautiful and interesting sight,  hike up to Crater Lake and see that the hills really are alive with the sound of music. - Kristen
