TCT Route
Today was cool but a nice day for a 50 km ride with great scenery including herons nesting high in some trees. I fared better than my bike. The bike got a flat tire while I have not parts break or fall off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of riding, I have come up with Trans Canada Trail route between Ste-Marie among the Hurons, Ontario and Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre, Quebec. All done with the assistance of the Trans Canada Trail website, Google maps, and AllTrails. I'm getting close to my actual route. This route is 1,600 km - a bit more than I was looking for.
I am sure to remove the camel hump between Ottawa and Montreal as soon as I find an alternative trail(s) between the 2 cities. This hump is about 525 km and has 2 steep climbs of 200-300 m and lots of uphill pedaling (the upside is that there is a might impressive downhill run near the end). I've read that it's a very pretty ride travelling through Gatineau and Mont Tremblant parks, but it will have to wait.
One more iteration and I will have a solid route.
Tumblr media
I will post the map on AllTrails for others to use, when I finish.

Installation Tips for Pond Liner in Ottawa: Ensuring Durability and Aesthetics
Creating a beautiful and durable pond in Ottawa involves careful planning and execution, particularly when it comes to installing a pond liner. This crucial component not only ensures the water stays in the pond but also protects the surrounding environment from potential contamination. Here, we provide detailed tips and best practices for installing a pond liner in Ottawa, emphasizing both durability and aesthetics.
Tumblr media
1. Choosing the Right Pond Liner Material
Selecting the appropriate material for your pond liner is the first step in the installation process. In Ottawa, where the climate can vary dramatically, materials like PVC, EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), and RPE (reinforced polyethylene) are popular due to their flexibility and resistance to UV light and frost. EPDM, in particular, is favored for its durability and environmental safety.
2. Preparing the Site
Proper site preparation is crucial for the longevity of the pond liner. Begin by choosing a level area for your pond, ideally away from trees to minimize debris and root penetration. Excavate the area to the desired shape and depth, and make sure to remove all sharp objects, stones, and roots that could puncture the liner. It's beneficial to lay a layer of sand or soft underlayment fabric to create a protective cushion for the liner.
3. Calculating the Liner Size
To determine the size of the liner required, measure the maximum length and width of the pond, and add twice the maximum depth plus an additional two feet on each measurement for overlap. This extra material is essential for securing the liner around the edges of the pond.
4. Installing the Liner
The installation should ideally be done on a warm day, as the liner will be more pliable and easier to mold to the shape of the pond. Unfold the liner gently over the prepared hole and slowly ease it into place, minimizing folds and wrinkles as much as possible. Allow the liner to settle naturally into the excavation, and fill the pond with a few inches of water to help the liner conform to the pond’s contours before finishing the edges.
5. Securing and Protecting the Edges
Once the pond is partially filled, you can secure the edges of the liner. Dig a small trench around the perimeter of the pond, and bury the excess liner in this trench, or secure it with heavy stones or pavers. This step is critical to prevent the liner from shifting and to keep it anchored.
6. Adding Aesthetic Touches
With the functional aspects taken care of, focus on the aesthetics. Edge the pond with natural stones, plants, or a wooden frame to blend the pond into the surrounding landscape. Additionally, consider installing a border of aquatic plants that can help integrate the pond into the garden naturally.
7. Regular Maintenance
After installation, regular maintenance is key to extending the life of your pond liner. Keep the pond clean of debris, check for and repair any leaks, and manage the water quality to prevent the buildup of algae and bacteria, which can degrade the liner material over time.
8. Winter Care
In Ottawa, preparing your pond for winter is crucial. Ensure that the pond is equipped with a heater or de-icer to prevent the water from freezing completely, as ice expansion can damage the liner.
By following these installation tips, you can ensure that your pond liner in Ottawa not only serves its purpose effectively but also enhances the beauty of your landscape. Proper installation and maintenance not only prolong the life of the pond liner but also create a tranquil and aesthetic water feature in your garden.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IN THE EVENT OF WATER DAMAGE EMERGENCY?
HOW CAN YOU PRIORITIZE SAFETY DURING A WATER DAMAGE EMERGENCY?
During a water damage emergency, safety is paramount. Secure the affected area, if possible, turn off the water source, prevent access until it’s deemed safe and wait for professional assistance. Prioritizing safety is crucial to prevent accidents, injuries, and further damage.
WHAT IMMEDIATE STEPS SHOULD YOU TAKE TO ADDRESS WATER DAMAGE?
Begin by identifying the source of the flooding issue and turn it off, if you can. Your next step is to contact a professional water damage restoration service. They will help to document the damage for insurance purposes with photos or videos, as well as remove any affected materials and install the proper equipment to dry your home. After they will be able to complete the necessary repairs to restore the home you love.
WHEN SHOULD YOU CONSIDER PROFESSIONAL WATER DAMAGE RESTORATION SERVICES?
Professional services are recommended, especially for extensive damage, as they have the expertise and equipment to handle the situation safely and effectively, preventing long-term issues and/ or secondary damages like structural damage and mold growth.
HOW CAN YOU RECOVER FROM FIRE DAMAGE?
HOW DO YOU EFFICIENTLY TACKLE SMOKE AND SOOT CLEANUP?
Depending on the extent of the damage, you may be able to start by cleaning walls, ceilings, and surfaces with a mild soap and water mixture, being cautious not to use abrasive cleaning products that could exacerbate damage. Keep in mind though that smoke and fire damage can be much more extensive than you first think and often requires professional remediation.
WHY IS IT ESSENTIAL TO SEEK HELP FROM REPUTABLE FIRE RESTORATION COMPANIES?
Reputable fire restoration companies have the materials and expertise to clean and repair your damaged home. WHAT PROACTIVE PREPARATIONS CAN YOU MAKE BEFORE SEVERE STORMS?
Ensure your home is properly weatherproofed by sealing cracks and gaps to prevent water infiltration during heavy rains and strong winds. Maintain your landscaping by trimming overhanging branches and removing dead trees or branches to minimize the risk of falling debris. Don’t forget to secure outdoor items and assemble an emergency kit with essential supplies like non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, and a first-aid kit. Working with a restoration company to see what other proactive measure you can take, including proper grading to keep the water away from your house, especially in the Ottawa Valley, would also help to prevent storm damage.

HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY AND ADDRESS MOLD ISSUES FOLLOWING A WATER EMERGENCY?
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF A MOLD INFESTATION IN YOUR HOME?
Look for musty odors, often distinctive to mold, emanating from specific areas in your home. Additionally, be vigilant for visible mold growth, which can manifest as fuzzy, discolored patches on walls, ceilings, or other surfaces. Keep an eye on water stains as well, as these can serve as breeding grounds for mold.  How can you safely and effectively remove mold?
Safety should always come first. Wear protective gear, such as gloves and a mask, when handling mold, and ensure proper ventilation in the affected area. Isolate the contaminated space to prevent the spread of mold spores. Identify and address the source of moisture contributing to mold growth, whether it’s a leaky pipe, roof issue, or high indoor humidity. Depending on the extent of the infestation, you can clean small areas of mold with a mixture of water and detergent, but for extensive problems, you need to call professional mold remediation services.
WHAT MEASURES SHOULD YOU TAKE TO PREVENT FUTURE MOLD GROWTH?

Navigating Backyard Intruders: Effective Strategies for Squirrel Pest Control
Tumblr media
A variety of animals emerge from their winter hibernation when the seasons shift and the greenery flowers, including squirrels, who are among the most active of the species that venture outside to take in the sights and sounds of nature slowly coming back to life. Although these bright-eyed, fluffy-tailed creatures embodied the fun spirit of the great outdoors, any homeowner will confirm that they can also turn into unrelenting pests, causing havoc in attics, gardens, and bird feeders. In order to ensure that peace is restored without upsetting the delicate balance of our local ecosystems, we'll look at compassionate and practical solutions for handling squirrel infestations (Squirrel Removal Ottawa) in this article.
Understanding Squirrel Behavior
It is essential to comprehend squirrel behavior in order to manage squirrel populations in an efficient manner. The daytime hours are when squirrels are most busy, when they are looking for nuts, seeds, and other food to store. Because of their remarkable leaping abilities and reputation for acrobatics, they can practically reach any location. They can also cause harm to property since they frequently take refuge in isolated areas like attics to build their nests.
Preventative Measures
Prevention is the first line of defense when it comes to controlling squirrel pests. Examine your home's exterior first. Look for any openings where squirrels may enter through the siding or eaves and cover them with materials that are strong enough to keep them out. Use metal flashing or heavy-duty hardware cloth for repairs since squirrels can eat through weak locations.
Plants that are inherently resistant to squirrels' foraging, like marigolds and daffodils, can help you create a squirrel-proof landscape. Digging can also be discouraged by using mulches like stone or gravel.
Bird Feeders Tactics
Keeping squirrels out of bird feeders is a frequent problem. Use baffles that prevent squirrels from accessing the feeder or choose feeders that are made to close under the weight of an animal. Furthermore, place feeders far from structures or trees that might serve as jumping off locations. Employing safflower seeds, which squirrels find less appetizing, will also put a stop to their curiosity without affecting birds.
Natural Deterrents
Using natural deterrents to keep squirrels from taking over your area may be a compassionate and successful strategy. Strong smells like peppermint, garlic, and cayenne pepper deter squirrels. Use essential oils on cotton balls near doorways or windows to create a fragrant border around your yard. There are commercial natural repellents available; however, be sure the repellents are appropriate to use in outdoor settings where children and dogs are present and non-toxic.
Live Trapping and Relocation
Live trapping followed by safe relocation may be your final alternative if squirrels have become too much of a problem. Since local laws for catching and moving wildlife differ from place to place, always verify them. Protection gloves should be used when handling the cage to prevent bites or scratches, and live traps must be checked often to minimize discomfort to the trapped animal.
Community Involvement
Speaking with a local pest control company or animal rehabilitation facilities might provide you further advice and support on handling your squirrel problem. They may provide personalized guidance and compassionate fixes to guarantee that the squirrels are handled humanely and that your property is safeguarded.
In Conclusion
Although adorable, squirrels may become a nuisance in human areas due to their playful tendencies. Understanding these animals' routines and acting proactively to avoid problems will help you coexist peacefully with them. Homeowners may efficiently control squirrel populations by using exclusion strategies, carefully placing bird feeders, natural deterrents, and humane live capture procedures. As we share our outside areas with these lively creatures, never forget the importance of treating wildlife with respect and working towards coexistence. You may prevent these furry visitors from lingering longer than necessary by using the appropriate strategy and a little patience, which will maintain a harmonious relationship between your small home and its inhabitants.

Seasonal Auto Glass Repair Tips: Protecting Your Vehicle Year-Round
As the seasons change, so do the challenges your auto glass faces. From scorching summer heat to freezing winter temperatures, your car's windows and windshield are exposed to a wide range of weather conditions that can take a toll on their durability. To help you keep your auto glass in top shape throughout the year, we've compiled a set of seasonal auto glass repair tips. These tips will not only enhance the longevity of your auto glass but also ensure your safety on the road.
Tumblr media
1. Summer Sun and Auto Glass Care
Summer can bring intense heat, and the sun's rays can be especially harsh on your auto glass. Here's how to protect your vehicle's windows and windshield during the hottest months:
Park in the shade: Whenever possible, park your vehicle in the shade to minimize exposure to direct sunlight. This can help prevent the expansion of minor cracks or chips in your auto glass due to the heat.
Use sunshades: Invest in quality sunshades for your windshield and rear window. These shields block UV rays and reduce the interior temperature, preventing heat-related stress on the glass.
Regular cleaning: Keep your auto glass clean to remove dirt, debris, and tree sap that can become baked onto the surface under the sun.
2. Preparing for Fall and Falling Debris
As the leaves change colour and fall, your auto glass may be at risk of damage from falling debris. Here's how to minimize risks in the autumn months:
Trim tree branches: Trim overhanging branches near your parking spots to reduce the chance of leaves, twigs, or falling fruit causing damage to your auto glass.
Regular inspections: Periodically inspect your auto glass for any small chips or cracks. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent them from worsening during the colder months.
3. Winter Cold and Auto Glass Care
Winter brings freezing temperatures and potential hazards like ice and road salt. Protect your auto glass during this season with these tips:
Gentle defrosting: Avoid using hot water or sharp objects to remove ice from your windshield. Instead, use an ice scraper or a specialized de-icing solution.
Proper washer fluid: Ensure your windshield washer fluid is rated for cold weather to prevent it from freezing and damaging your windshield.
Protect against road salt: Road salt can corrode your auto glass. Regularly wash your vehicle, including the windows and windshield, to remove salt residue.
4. Spring Showers and Windshield Wipers
Spring often means rain showers and good visibility is crucial. Here's how to care for your auto glass in wet conditions:
Check windshield wipers: Inspect and replace worn-out or damaged windshield wipers to maintain clear visibility during rain showers.
Apply rain repellent: Consider applying a rain-repellent treatment to your windshield, which can improve water shedding and visibility.
Your auto glass plays a crucial role in your safety on the road. By following these seasonal auto glass repair tips, you can extend the life of your auto glass and ensure clear visibility in all weather conditions. Remember that small chips and cracks can worsen over time, so address them promptly to avoid the need for costly replacements. With proper care, your auto glass will serve you well throughout the year.

Why Regular Cedar Hedge Trimming is Essential for a Beautiful Landscape
It's easy to take your cedar hedge for granted. After all, it's been growing in your yard for years and you've probably never given it much thought. But if you want your cedar hedge to look its best, it's essential that you trim it regularly. Trimming a cedar hedge can be easy or difficult, depending on how well the plant has been growing and how much work needs to be done. Here are some tips for keeping your hedges healthy and beautiful. Cedar hedge trimming Ottawa.
Tumblr media
Hedge trimming is essential to keep a cedar hedge healthy.
If you have a cedar hedge in your landscape, regular trimming is essential to keep it healthy and attractive. A cedar hedge is an evergreen plant that can be used to form a border or screen and can be trimmed to keep at the height you prefer (provided that it's not cut back too far).
When you trim cedar hedges, remove any dead or diseased branches first so they don't spread disease throughout the rest of the plant. Then go over all other branches with sharp pruning shears, removing those that are broken or diseased along with those that are growing horizontally instead of vertically--this will help keep them from becoming too thick at their base and may even reduce some maintenance costs later on!
Trimming a cedar hedge makes it grow better.
Hedge trimming Ottawa is an essential part of maintaining it. By trimming your cedar hedge, you can encourage new growth and blooms. You will also get more fruit from your cedars as well as more fragrance from the plant's leaves.
Trimming helps to keep the plants in their desired shape and size, but it also encourages new growth at the tips of each branch so that they don't become too long or lanky looking over time. The extra foliage around these tips produces flowers that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies (which are great for attracting birds).
It's much easier to trim a cedar hedge.
A cedar hedge is a beautiful addition to any landscape, but it can be difficult to maintain. It's much easier to trim a cedar hedge when it's young than when it's mature. When you trim a young hedge, it's more like pruning a tree than trimming an adult one. You can use hand tools or power trimmers on the smaller branches and get them into shape quickly and easily. However, if you wait until your cedar has grown into maturity before taking action against any overgrown sections of the plant (which will happen eventually), then you'll have much more work ahead of yourself when trying to bring things back under control again!
There are two main reasons why this is true: firstly because older plants tend not only have thicker foliage but also larger stems which makes cutting through them harder; secondly secondly because they tend not only have thicker foliage but also larger stems which makes cutting through them harder; secondly secondly because they tend not only have thicker foliage but also larger stems which makes cutting through them harder; secondly secondly because they tend not only have thicker foliage but also larger stems which makes cutting through...
Trimming cedar hedges involves more than just cutting off the ends.
You should also trim the sides, and you might even want to trim the bottom of your hedge as well. When you're done with this, make sure that it looks like your cedar hedge is growing out of a box! It's important not to cut off too many branches at once or else they won't have time enough to grow back before winter comes around again next year--and then your beautiful landscape will be ruined by ugly brown stumps sticking out all over it!
You should get professional help for the first few times.
If you're new to trimming hedges, it's best to get professional help the first few times. A professional hedge trimmer will know what he or she is doing and can trim your hedge into a specific shape that looks good in your landscape. They also have experience with the right time of year for pruning, as well as how much height or width should be removed from each branch on the plant.
A well-maintained hedge is the attractive feature.
A well-maintained hedge can be one of the most attractive features of your landscape.
Hedges provide privacy, wind breaks and visual barriers that add value to your property.
They also provide an ornamental feature that will enhance any setting whether it's urban or rural.

Two more invasives to look for in Michigan
Michigan’s invasive species watch list was recently updated to include two new species and remove another. Mountain pine beetle, a deadly threat to pine trees, and water-primrose, a fast-spreading aquatic plant, have been added to the watch list due to threats they pose to native ecosystems and industry. European frog-bit, originally listed in 2011, has been moved off the list of species of immediate concern and is now considered established in the state.
Mountain pine beetle has been characterized as the most aggressive, persistent and destructive bark beetle in the western U.S. and Canada. Hot, dry summers and mild winters in these areas have led to the beetle’s unprecedented population growth and range expansion, moving it ever closer to Michigan.
“White and red pines are primary species in our forest ecosystems, and jack pine serves as critical habitat for the Kirtand’s warbler,” said Susie Iott, invasive species program specialist with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. “If mountain pine beetle were to become widely established in Michigan, it would cause severe losses across multiple industries, including timber products, plant nurseries and tourism.”
Because the beetle can be transported on infested pine logs, firewood and other similar commodities, MDARD issued an exterior mountain pine beetle quarantine in 2020 to regulate the movement of all firewood and any pine products with bark attached from areas of the western U.S. and Canada.
Water-primrose (Ludwigia species) is a group of very similar non-native plants, L. grandifolia, L. peploides and L. hexapetala, that are invasive in wetland ecosystems. Water-primrose is quick to establish and spread in dense mats within wetlands and shoreline areas, outcompeting native species and making boating and water access difficult.
Three known populations, two in the greater Detroit area and one in Ottawa County, indicate the species can survive and thrive in Michigan’s climate. Once established, water-primrose can be very difficult to remove, making early detection critical.
A recent review of European frog-bit, an invasive aquatic plant, determined that the plant no longer met watch list criteria due to its establishment in many areas of the state. European frog-bit still retains its prohibited status, making it unlawful to possess, introduce, import or sell in Michigan. State and local management efforts for European frog-bit will continue despite the status change.
Michigan’s Invasive Species Program continues to participate in the European Frog-bit Collaborative, which aims to improve coordination among stakeholders, establish communication networks and build consensus on next steps for management and research. Significant investments continue to support efforts, largely led by local conservation groups, to reduce the invasive plant’s spread.
How you can help
The public is encouraged to look for and report potential infestations of mountain pine beetle and water-primrose.
Since mountain pine beetles are tiny and live under bark, they often are detected by the presence of many popcorn-like lumps of pine pitch, called “pitch tubes” on pine tree trunks. Pitch tubes can be brown, pink or white and are created as the tree attempts to push out an entering beetle. Red frass, a fine sawdust generated by the beetle’s chewing, can be visible in bark crevices and around the base of an infested tree.
Invasive water-primrose can be found along the water’s edge or floating on the water. Plants grow upright to 2 feet in height and also spread horizontally. Look for reddish stems, willow-like or spatula-shaped, dark green leaves and a showy, yellow flower with five or six petals.
Reporting
When reporting watch list species, include one or more photos of the suspected species or its symptoms and provide the location of the infestation.
To report mountain pine beetle, invasive water-primrose and other watch list species:
Use the Midwest Invasive Species Information Network online reporting tool.
Or download the MISIN smartphone app and report from your phone.
More information on identifying, reporting and preventing the introduction or spread of watch list species is available at Michigan.gov/Invasives/ID-Report/Watchlist.

The partners behind the future Ottawa suburb of Tewin say they've been cleaning up brush and trees felled by last year's wind storm on a parcel of land just outside the urban boundary, but aerial images appear to tell a different story.
Drone cameras sent up first by concerned neighbours and then by CBC News show a swath of about 70 hectares has been clear-cut in recent weeks.
Neighbours told CBC News they'd been catching whiffs of pine in the air and hearing a low hum at night, but they couldn't see any activity because of a buffer of trees along Anderson, Piperville, and Ramsayville roads.
It wasn't until someone flew a drone over the area and posted photos on a community Facebook group in mid-February that there was widespread alarm and an outcry at a Carlsbad Springs Community Association meeting.
"It was just devastating," said Monica Brewer, whose family has lived in the area for about 50 years. "It's not about ten trees; it's about hundreds and hundreds of trees."
The property north of Piperville Road is owned by the Algonquins of Ontario (AOO) and lies within the larger area in the city's rural southeast where the AOO and its partner Taggart Group have proposed a large community that would be rooted in Algonquin values and make Ottawa a world leader in developing walkable, sustainable communities.
The city council ultimately voted to redraw Ottawa's urban boundary, the urban-rural divide that delineates where development can occur, to include some of the AOO and Taggart lands so Tewin could begin building.
The parcel where trees have been cut falls just outside the urban area and is labelled "unevaluated wetlands" in the city's mapping database. It is also subject to the city's new tree protection bylaw.
CBC News obtained its own drone footage this week that confirms rural land has been cleared in a broad swath stretching between Ramsayville and Anderson and north to a creek that forms the new urban boundary.
Hundreds of logs sit in piles, awaiting heavy machinery to lift them onto trucks. Trees are arranged in dozens of tidy bunches.
Google satellite imagery shows the area had previously been covered in greenery in the summer months and included some wet areas. The Capital Commission's mapping of the tree canopy also showed the property covered in trees.
The parcel was among the approximately 1,600 hectares the AOO purchased from the Ontario government in January 2020 under the province's duty to consult.
Wendy Jocko, chief of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, said she was unavailable for an interview but explained by email that debris from the derecho in 2022 needed to be cleaned up.
"The area in question was farmed several decades ago, and since then, a mix of grass, brush, and trees have grown on the agricultural land," she wrote.
When reached by phone, the contractor, Ottawa Cedar and Lumber, declined to comment on this story.
An emailed statement from Taggart Group's Michelle Taggart echoed Jocko's comments that the lands were formerly farmed and "shrubs, grasses, and some immature trees" have since regrown.
"We were advised by our environmental consultant… that the bylaws allow for the removal of trees in preparation for farming in the rural area," it said.
CBC News asked the City of Ottawa for an interview on Feb. 24 to confirm whether a permit had been issued to allow for the destruction of trees and if city staff knew about the cutting ahead of time.
"The city continues to review the matter and can confirm that a tree permit was not issued for this location," wrote Don Herweyer, interim general manager of planning, real estate, and economic development, in an email Tuesday.
The city's tree protection bylaw, which came into effect on Jan. 1, 2021, states that "no person shall injure or destroy or permit the injury or destruction of a tree" over 10 centimetres in diameter on many private properties greater than one hectare unless the general manager has issued a permit."
The bylaw includes maps of many woodland areas on either side of the new urban boundary, including the Tewin parcel, where future homes are expected.
Seven exemptions exist that would allow a tree to be destroyed without a permit, including if the tree "is an immediate threat to public health and safety" or "the injury or destruction is a normal farm practice carried out as part of an agricultural operation by a farming business."
According to Herweyer, city staff are currently "reviewing if a permit was required" in this case.
The South Nation Conservation Authority, whose watershed includes Tewin, has no jurisdiction over tree cutting and can only regulate wetlands that have been officially designated as "provincially significant."
When the city council was debating whether to include Tewin as an entirely new suburb in 2020 and 2021, city staff warned they hadn't properly assessed the soil conditions or natural features there.
What most upsets residents is that they received no warning of the tree cutting, despite having been promised regular updates and consultation by the AOO and Taggart.
"When there's work to be done, the community needs to know ahead of time," said Adrian Becea, president of the Carlsbad Springs Community Association.
Brewer was surprised that the cutting took place in an area where neighbours didn't expect to see development for many years because that land is not yet included in the urban boundary.
She said neighbours understood the development was going ahead and were interested in the promise of a zero-carbon community, and AOO had promised to follow a framework called One Planet Living).
"It was supposed to be a very special project," Brewer said. "The environmental assessments are finished, and the first thing that's been done is complete deforestation."
Taggart added that her company and the AOO would keep residents better informed in the future, given the public's interest.
Other residents told CBC they expect the suburb of Findlay Creek to the west will inevitably spread toward the future Tewin.
Last fall, Ontario municipal affairs and housing minister Steve Clark approved expanding Ottawa's urban boundary in Findlay Creek, which would bring new homes to within three kilometres of the Tewin land where the trees were cut.

5 Tips to Increase Your Driveway’s Curb Appeal
Is the condition of your driveway beginning to deteriorate a little? Nothing adds more curb appeal to your home than a brand-new paved driveway. But how can you choose which is best for you when there are so many options? Here are 5 tips to help you get the most out of your next paving project by hiring Driveway paving services Ottawa.
Tumblr media
Tips to Enhance Your Driveway Paving
1. Understand Your Budget:
Before you begin looking for a contractor, you must understand your budget and decide on the type of material that best fits. Paving materials can range from asphalt and concrete to stone or gravel, so make sure you research and find the material that suits your aesthetic and financial needs.
2. Find an Experienced Contractor:
If you want your driveway done right, hire an experienced contractor or Driveway paving services Ottawa who has previously done similar jobs. Before deciding, enquire for references and peruse online reviews. A good contractor can advise on what type of material would work best for your specific situation, as well as provide information on cost and installation timeline.
3. Prepare the Area:
Once you have chosen a contractor, they will likely need access to power and water to complete their job properly. Before they arrive, ensure all obstacles are cleared away from the area, such as trees and shrubs, so that they can get started quickly without any delays. Additionally, it’s important that any existing pavement is removed before new paving can be laid down – this will ensure that everything is level before installation begins.
4. Plan Ahead:
Depending on which material you choose, the time between installation and when it’s ready for use can vary significantly (from days for asphalt to weeks for concrete). Ensure that your contractor provides an estimated timeline. Hence, you know what disruption may occur during construction and if any special instructions are needed after installation (for example, avoiding driving on freshly poured asphalt).
5. Maintenance Is Key:
Lastly, maintenance is key to keeping your Ottawa Driveway Paving in top condition! Regular cleaning with a pressure washer or garden hose can help remove dirt build-up over time – essential if you live in an area with lots of rain or snow! Additionally, sealing the pavement every few years helps protect against wear and tear caused by traffic or weather conditions – something that should be considered when considering the costs associated with maintaining your newly paved driveway!
Conclusion
A newly paved driveway isn’t just aesthetically pleasing; it also increases safety around your home by improving visibility at night and providing better traction in wet or icy conditions! With these 5 tips in mind, finding Driveway paving services Ottawa who understands your budget and needs shouldn’t be too hard – so go ahead and permit yourself to start planning those projects today! Good luck!

From centrepiece to curb: How to get rid of your Christmas tree sustainably
The post-holiday Christmas tree dump can start a few days after the big day or for some will happen traditionally on the Twelfth Night which falls either on Jan. 5 or 6.
Whichever date you chose to dispose of the once focal point of the holiday decorations, trees can soon be seen littered throughout communities waiting to be dealt with before sometimes ending up in a landfill or incinerator.
But there are sustainable ways to dispose of your beloved Christmas tree that does not take space in a local dump.
Tree Canada, a national non-profit organization focusing on Canadian forests, says people have many options to give back to Mother Nature during the holidays.
In a blog post dated Dec. 12, 2022, the organization breaks down five ways Canadians can reduce their environmental impact and extend the Christmas tree's life.
To be correctly disposed of, the trees need to be free of ornaments and tinsel. Once bare, Tree Canada says the tree can be turned into mulch, which can be used as fertilizer.
"It preserves soil moisture, moderates soil temperature, and releases nutrients as it decomposes," the website reads.
For those with a backyard, the organization says keeping it upright to allow animals and birds to nest inside throughout the winter gives back to the ecosystem.
Some municipalities, like the City of Ottawa, have programs where people can donate their trees to be used in public spaces.
The National Capital Commission (NCC), the organization in Ottawa that runs the Rideau Canal, asks for residents to donate their Christmas trees at the end of the season. From there the NCC uses the trees along the canal to beautify the area.
In Ayr, Ont., a local farm asks people to donate their trees to feed the goats. The Rodrigues Farm says trees are a "great source of nutrients" for their animals.
When snow covers most of Canada, farm animals included have a difficult time sourcing food, Sarah Rodrigues, co-owner of the Rodrigues Farm previously told CTV News Kitchener.
"It's also a natural dewormer, so it saves on sort of medications and stuff," she said.
According to the farm, the goats chow down on almost every inch of the tree. The difficult parts, like the stump, are then broken down to create mulch.
Tree Canada said most municipalities collect trees through a yard waste or green bin program.
The City of Calgary asks residents to remove Christmas decorations and cut up the tree into smaller pieces for easy disposal in the green bin. If the bin is full, the city advises people to use yard waste bags.
From there the city composts the trees and then has "compost giveaway" events in the new year.
Calgary also has a tree drop-off program open from Dec. 26 to Jan. 31.
Tree Canada says artificial trees cannot be recycled but asks Canadians to reuse the tree for many years lowering their impact with "each passing year."
"If you are ready to part ways with your tree, be sure to donate or gift it to someone in need so that it can be reused for years to come," the Tree Canada website reads.
WHEN TO DISPOSE OF CHRISTMAS TREES
This largely depends on personal traditions. Some will keep a Christmas tree up until it begins to dry out, when it become a fire hazard, while others may decide to follow traditions kept up for centuries.
Twelfth Night is not just a play by Shakespeare, it is the day when Christians take down Christmas decorations and feast.
Landing on Jan. 5 or Jan. 6, depending on which denomination is followed, the Twelfth Night is celebrated prior to a Feast of Epiphany which can also be known as Three Kings' Day. In the Bible, Epiphany is when the three kings, or wise men, visited Jesus with gifts.
It is also celebrated for the day that Jesus' divinity was manifested, according to Christian belief.
"This season of festivity has been celebrated in England since Anglo-Saxon times, when the ninth century Christian king Alfred the Great forbade all work during the twelve days of Christmas," the Culture, History and Sport department of Canada website reads.
Some people believe if decorations are left up after the Twelfth Night, it would bring bad luck to the home.
