Ranikhet Tour
In the Kumaoni language, Ranikhet is referred to as Rnikhèt. Ranikhet is a hill station and cantonment town that can be found in the Almora district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is situated in close proximity to the town of Almora. The Kumaon Regiment (KRC) and the Naga Regiment both call it their home base, and the Indian Army is responsible for its maintenance and upkeep. In addition, the location of the Military Hospital may be found there. There are two distinct interpretations that may be made of the origin of the name Ranikhet. One story suggests that Padmini, queen of Katuari Raja Dudhan Dev (1180), selected this spot because she desired to study, play, and stay there; hence, the region became known as Ranikhet as a result of this choice. The other reason is that it was the location of many battles and was referred to as Rankshetra, which is a Sanskrit word that literally translates to "the battlefield." In Ranikhet, the Mankameshwar Temple is a well-known and significant monument. The Kumaon Regiment was the organization that was in charge of constructing the temple. You'll find it immediately across the street from both the Shawl Factory and the Gurudwara. As soon as one steps foot inside the temple, they will be greeted by statues of Radha and Krishna, in addition to Ma Kalika and Lord Shiva.
Get in contact with one of our knowledgeable Trip Counselors if you have any questions about the Ranikhet excursions we provide, which are both educational and affordable.

Resort in Jim Corbett near River
Winters are here, pull out your coziest sweater, throw a log on the fire, and get ready to plan the ultimate winter trip. The question is which is the best place to  spent Christmas and New Year. What could be more exciting than Uttarakhand. If you want to keep this winter for the likes of a Jungle Safari, elephant rides and tiger spotting tigers at the oldest national park of the country lakes, boating, river rafting and sceneries, Uttarakhand is almost obvious. While summer won’t be a bother either, the weather only gets more enjoyable towards winters.
Uttarakhand is a very popular pilgrimage site, as it is the originating spot of the Ganga and the Yamuna, two of the most sacred rivers for Hindus. Uttarakhand is home to the Char Dhams, the four most pious sites of pilgrimage revered by the Hindus ? Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Thousands of tourists visit Uttarakhand annually to pay homage to the Char Dhams. Ancient temples, forest reserves, national parks, hill stations, and mountain peaks welcome you in the calm, cooling air of Uttarakhand. Mussoorie, Nainital, Dhanaulti, Lansdowne, Sattal, Almora, Kausani, Bhimtal, and Ranikhet are ever embracing hill stations in the state best for all kinds of trips be it a family holiday or a honeymoon.
Famously known as Devbhumi, or the Land of the Gods, Uttarakhand is a land of untouched natural beauty and sublime spirituality. Carved out from Uttar Pradesh, the state, formerly known as Uttaranchal, is a place that not only boasts of a scintillating view of the Himalayas but also exhibits a cultural ethos which speaks of a simplistic and harmonic coexistence with nature. With oaks, birches, silver firs and rhododendrons adorning the steep mountain slopes, Uttarakhand offers you a glimpse into an untainted world.

Summer break: adventures in Nainital and Kausani.
The three week mid-term summer break enabled me enough time to take another trip to the Himalyan foothills to visit Nainital and Kausani. Sadly, the trains were booked up due to it being peak time for Indians to visit the hill stations to escape the Delhi heat. From the advice I’d been given by indian friends, buses were a no no, so I decided to hire a car with driver to take me on the five day tour.
Friday 7th June
Left 5am and drove to Nainital which took about 9 hours - far longer than expected due to the long queues of traffic entering Nainital caused by numerous police checks. My Air bnb accommodation although ‘shabby’ was at least self contained and had a lovely view of the lake. Nainital itself was overcrowded and completely jammed full of traffic, so i avoided the town centre completely, taking just one trip to the lake where i sat upstairs in Cafe Coffee Day on the veranda, looking out over the lake.
Tumblr media
The host (who was the Air bnb’s brother) was extremely friendly and took me to visit his mother and grandmother who’d come to stay for a few days. I took tea and some special Indian sweets with them and Abhishek’s brother was able to translate to allow us some basic conversation.
Tumblr media
It was lovely to be in a much cooler climate with temperatures arpound the mid-late 20s as oppose to the mid-40s in Delhi. Their special, tranquil, wild flower garden was a joy to sit in, away from the crowded highstreet (shown in picture above).
Sunday 9th June
Left Nainital 5.30am to drive the long, windy route to Kausani which took about 6 hours. Kausani is a small, much quieter hillstation. Sadly, the view from my hotel balcony (which should have been the snowy peaks of the Himalayas) was shrouded by the smoke from forest fires. However, I did manage to get some good views on the morning i left.
During my stay, i visited the Kausani tea estate, a shawl factory where it was possible to watch the shawls being made using traditional methods, and the Anasakti Ashram which Ghandi visited in 1929.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
View on route to Kausani
Tumblr media
Sadly run down, like most of the British establishments from the time of the occupation in Utterakhand.
Tumblr media
Hand picking the leaves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anasakti Ashram where Ghandi stayed in 1929. There was an exhibition in the temple which detailed Ghandi’s political and religious life.
Tumblr media
This is what the view should have been like from my hotel, but actually i downloaded this from the internet!
Tuesday 11th June
Left Kausani to drive to Rhaniket. On the way, i stopped at Someshwar to visit the Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva (every Hindu temple is dedicated to a different god). It was a magical place and i spent a good hour there, basking in the tranquility.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rhaniket
Arrived in Rhaniket around 2pm to discover that the Air bnb was about 5 miles outside of the town centre. I wished i could have stayed longer, as it’s such a beautiful area.
What Wikipedia says:
Ranikhet is a hill station and cantonment town in Almora district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is the home for the Military Hospital, Kumaon Regiment (KRC) and  Naga Regiment and is maintained by the Indian Army. Ranikhet is at an altitude of 1,869 metres (6,132 ft) above sea level and within sight of the western peaks of the Himalayas.
Ranikhet, which means Queen's meadow in Hindi, gets its name from a local legend, which states that it was here, that Raja Sudhardev won the heart of his queen, Rani Padmini, who subsequently chose the area for her residence, giving it the name, Ranikhet, though no palace exists in the area.
In 1869, the British established the headquarters of the Kumaon Regiment here and used the station as a retreat from the heat of the Indian summer. At one time during British Raj, it was also proposed as the summer headquarters of Government of India, in lieu of Shimla. In 1900, it had a summer population of 7,705, and its corresponding winter population was measured in 1901 as 3,153.
Ranikhet had been under Nepalese rule, and the Kumaonese (people of Kumaon Region) won it under the leadership of their able General Kashi Nath Adhikari – after whom the small town of Kashipur was named.
Whilst not having enough time to visit the town, i was at least able to visit the Hindu temple dedicated to Hanuman.
Tumblr media
In the evening, I went for a lovely to walk in the forest, finding the perfect spot to watch the sunset with my beer.
Tumblr media
Wednesday 12th June
Left Rhaniket at 6am for the long, 9 hour journey back to Delhi. Some lovely mountain views on route.
