#Repost @kinkysudz I had this beer during the latest and first streamyard streamed episode of @blacknerdfridays. This beer was brewed by @dubco_ and is called Abuse of Science 2. This beer is an Imperial IPA sitting at 11% ABV. This beer was a bright apricot . Well drinking the beer and reflecting on the name abuse of science, it made me think about the atrocities that Black people have endured at the hands of science leading to mistrust of science within the Black community. When one learns about Tuskegee Experiment where Black men had their syphilis untreated to investigate its long term effects even after treatment was widely available (this experiment ran for 40 years) or the father of Gynecology experimenting on enslaved Black women without anesthesia, or the fact that Henrietta Lacks cervical cells were taken without consent and was used in research leading to the discovery of many therapies and Nobel prizes - it's not hard to see why the mistrust is there. . But in addition to these, we also see old paradigms still influencing our modern medical system - race factor in equations used in many lab tests used to diagnosis diseases, Black mothers being ignored and dying due to the idea that they feel less pain, socioeconomic difficulties in accessing medical care. The list goes on and on. . As a former scientist and currently working in the clinical trial field, I've strived to be a voice that holds these companies accountable. With thousands of clinical trials being held, Blacks only represent ~5% of participants yet they push these drugs on Black people without proper testing of safety and efficacy. At my current job, I help design studies that are patient centric - are we going to diverse communities, are we providing compensation and support, are we being transparent about the trial?
