Drawing Sonic characters that only 5 people know about
I gave up on these one because technically, they aren't Cannon, or rather they're scrapped, so it makes sense people wouldn't know about them

We open this issue on a bunch of badniks tormenting a young boy called Tufftee, because like in the early Archie comics, the badniks could talk when the plot requires them to. Once they introduce a larger villain roster, there’ll be less call for them to talk Regardless, Tufftee is interesting because he’s the younger brother of a much better-known Sonic character…

…Sally Acorn!
Now, I’m a big fan of Sally in general, so I’ve been looking forward to getting to this story, which I didn’t realise would turn up so quickly. She only actually appears at the beginning and end of the story, but she’s here! It’s Sally! I also find it a funny coincidence that over five years later, Sally would also be given a brother in the Archie Comics, albeit an older brother called Elias. Now, I do genuinely think that these two characters were made wholly independently of each other and their creators probably didn’t even knew the other character exists (especially since I believe this is Tufftee’s only appearance), but it’s just kind of wild that out of all the characters to randomly give a brother to, both comics chose Sally
Anyway, after Tails rudely awakens Sonic (who is less than happy about that), Sally reveals that her brother wanted to play hero like Sonic and borrowed a pair of his old power boots, which Sonic thinks could still contain a bit of his power. Sonic races off before Tails has a chance to ask what to do and then we get the usual page of Sonic racing through zones, doing action hero stuff. I don't really talk about these parts as much, but I like that they include them as a “this is Sonic doing stuff like he does in the games” thing Speaking of stuff from the games, it’s only a cameo here, but we get our first appearance of the Special Zone:

Now, in StC, the Special Zone has a narrative importance that it doesn’t have in most other Sonic spin-offs. It’s treated as a place within itself and it’s also home to the Chaotix of all people, but we’ll get to that later. For now, Sonic has Tufftee to save

Which he achieves easily enough. We get a few pages of Tufftee being tormented by the badniks, before Sonic comes along to defeat them and rescue him. I love that one of the critters in that panel above straight up looks like someone's pet cat

Tufftee manages to save Sonic at the last minute, which reassures him in his own mind that he’s a hero, even if Sonic isn’t very enthusiastic about it. Also, I didn’t post this panel, but there was a part earlier on where we see that Tufftee couldn’t control the speed that the shoes magically granted him, as a little “there’s more to being Sonic than just going really fast”

We end this issue with the siblings being reunited and Sonic bluntly taking his shoes back from Tufftee, with the warning that they only work for him. Like I said before, I don’t believe we see Tufftee again after this? I can understand why, since StC already has Tails as the younger character working hard to prove himself to his hero, so we don’t need another character basically filling that same role in the comic. Even so, I like it when Tufftee appears with Sally in StC fanwork. Y’know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone make an AU where Sally has both her brothers, Tufftee and Elias, but idk I think it might be interesting? Sally has a lot of middle sibling traits already Also, to wrap us up, I just wanted to talk about the art here, which is a vastly different style to the first two issues. For this issue, we had Casanovas on art duty and, while I haven’t been posting about the non-Sonic stories, this more-detailed style is actually closer to the high-fantasy styles used in the other comics featured in StC at the time. It’s definitely a ‘your mileage may vary’ sort of thing, but I like it purely for the nostalgia of this era of StC. We’ll be seeing a lot more of the fantasy-setting angle in regards to Tails’s backstory at some point as well

Buncha STC Acorn Doodles

I was thinking about how STC Sally would look as a more modern looking character. Gave her sad-eyes cause she was crying for pretty much the entire issue. I’m pretty sure she’s just a kid in this universe so I tried to give her Tail’s proportions.
Oh, and I got carried away with Tufftee, too...

...like, way too carried away.
I kept thinking what he would be like in the Archie universe, and although I knew there was no way to fit him in the comics’ lore, it was a fun what if to draw. Since STC #3 depicted him as a kid who really admires Sonic, I kind of took that in mind with his design in both versions (but this time he didn’t take Sonic’s shoes cause that’s way too creepy, lol). Tufftee probably wouldn’t be his real name, but probably just a nickname from his wannabe tough attitude. I also gave him the famous “Acorn Eyebrows” in his preboot design, but since Sally didn’t have her’s after the SGW I decided to snatch his brows, too. He turned from being a scruffy-looking-adventure-kid-prince to baby-face-wannabe-hero-prince XD.
More Archie Tufftee what-if's down below.

Sonic the Comic #3 part 3
I’m glad he got to have a little hero moment. And writing-wise, I like that characters other than Sonic get to be useful, even random kids like Tufftee.
Come on, Sonic, can’t you show some gratitude?
Last issue, Tails was complaining that he always stays behind in Green Hill Zone while Sonic gets to be the hero. But Tails is doing something very important. He’s comforting this anxious and distraught sister. You’re a hero too, Tails!
Also, while Sally will see Tufftee again, we won’t! This issue is his only appearance.
This is so cute!
Here we are at the end of the comic.
In these panels, we see that Sonic is ungrateful, and arrogant. What a grump.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next issue: coming soon, hopefully.

Round One - Wave Two
Information about these Sallys: Although not one of the main Freedom Fighters, Sally did have a few small appearances in the early days of the UK's Sonic the Comic. Fleetway Sally is probably best known for her appearance as a newsreader. Like most of the UK appearances of Sally, she was based on Ricky the Squirrel (more on that below). In these comics, Sally also has a younger brother called Tufftee, by contrast to the Archie comics, where she has an older brother called Elias "Ricky the Squirrel" has come up a few times in this tournament. He is one of the small animals that you can rescue from badniks in various Sonic games and exists in the franchise to this day. In the early 90s, primarily in the UK, Ricky was instead known by Sally Acorn in some marketing. As you can see in the above image, the figure is clearly Ricky, but has been labelled as Sally Acorn. Given that Ricky is so closely linked to Sally, I thought it only fair to include him in this tournament too

StC Post-Mortems: Sally Acorn
The site that I normally get the scans from is down, so let’s do something a little different and take a look at a character who wasn’t really a character in StC, but still had some appearances here and there. This post-mortem was suggested by @charlesinator
How it started
Sally Acorn was one of the small animal friends who Sonic rescued from badniks in the early issues of StC. She was based on the character who is now known as Ricky in the current Sonic canon, but you knew that already. It's hard to pin down the exact first appearance of the small animal characters in the comic, because unless they’re directly named, you could argue that any of the five little pig characters who Sonic just popped out of those badniks was or wasn’t Porker Lewis, but the earliest appearance of the squirrel wearing a bow that I could find was literally in issue one. Sally was one of the animals friends shown in the first issue. She didn't have a major role, but there she was
How it went
Outside of cameos, Sally would appear as an actual character in StC a handful of times, usually in stories written by Mark Millar. The first and probably best-known of these was in issue 3, where Sonic saved her younger brother Tufftee from danger. While Sally didn’t do much more than wait behind with Tails in this story, she was at least named and used as part of the plot
Sometimes she’d just kind of be around when Sonic had adventures too and that was nice
The main time I’d say she was perhaps similar to Sally Acorn from SatAM was in issue 13, when during the Extra Life story, she briefly banished Sonic from the Green Hill Zone after confusing Extra Life for him, before apologising when she realised her mistake later in the story. The whole “Sally banishes Sonic” thing was handled much more quickly and light-heartedly in StC than when Archie Sonic would use that plot line in years to come lol
How it ended
While she may have had small cameos after this issue, for the sake of this post-mortem I’m going to say that Sally’s final appearance was as a newscaster in issue 33, at the start of the Sonic 3 arc. By this point, Millar was long gone as a regular writer in the series and while the script doesn’t specifically mention Sally by name, this character is assumed to be her due to the whole “squirrel wearing a pink bow” thing. I’ve always considered this to be Sally’s final role in StC, though sadly she doesn’t appear again as a newscaster after this
(Fun fact: She does appear in the fanart section of StC as late as Sonic Adventure, but I haven’t got to that on the blog yet)
Were there any unused future plans from the StC writers?
None at all. Which probably isn’t surprising when the only writer who used her as a character left early on. The one reference to SatAM that I remember from StC was that Grimer was originally going to be Snively, but upon realising that he didn’t have to use the character, Kitching replaced Snively with Grimer and continued on from there. So, I assume he didn’t have much interest in including the SatAM characters. I’ve even heard people say that he wouldn’t have been allowed to use them anyway, but I don’t know about the legal side of things enough to say if that’s true or not I don’t think I’ve ever heard talk about what Stringer’s thoughts on Sally and/or SatAM were, if he even had any? With Amy coming along as the lead girl early on, the British side of Sonic really didn’t focus on Sally that much
What would I personally have liked to see next for her if StC continued?
Honestly, I’ve seen a few StC fancomics include Sally and I’m just such a fan of the character that my reaction is usually “Yay, Sally!” whenever they do. I’m not picky on how she’s used, just her being there is cool
While I can equally understand those who might not want Sally in the StC side of things, at least not in a similar role to the one she had further west, I’d be more than happy for her to keep making appearances as a newscaster in stories. Heck, I wouldn’t even be opposed to her and Tufftee coming back as Freedom Fighters, since the big sister & little brother dynamic could be fun to work with
What if she was in other Sonic media?
Buddy, have I got news for you if you’re wondering if Sally Acorn appears in other Sonic media
But also, she should be in IDW, dammit. She should be in the classic Sonic universe in the games. I’ll never stop hoping that someday my lost fave chipmunk girl will return from the Archie Sonic red tape mines… Let me have my delusions :'(

We have the same creative team going into the next part of this story, as we pick up from just after where we left off last time, with Omni-Viewer helping Sonic and friends escape back home. It seems that even though Omni-Viewer is being forced to work for Robotnik, it managed to find a loophole in his orders to “get rid of” Sonic and the others by literally taking them home, thus not disobeying Robotnik at all. That’s what a cool non-cop dimension-travelling buddy does for their bros, after all

But Omin-Viewer can’t stick around any longer than this and just getting home hasn’t solved Sonic’s problems, as it looks like the badniks have gotten a serious upgrade since the last time we saw them. Now we’re looking at StC-exclusive badniks as opposed to the ones from the early Sonic games. It’s funny, because I did admittedly quite like how weirdly ruthless the average badniks were at the beginning of the comic, but there was something silly about your average Aquis being able to send the entire Oil Ocean Zone up in flames to torch Sonic alive, so I can see why they might’ve chosen to switch them out for something that looks a bit more sinister

Tails remarks that he hasn’t seen badniks like these before and it takes Sonic a few pages worth of fighting to destroy them to release the little animals inside. And to answer the question of “How did the badniks become so strong so quickly”, we learn that Sonic hasn’t been seen for six months!

Johnny’s the one to figure out what Omni-Viewer couldn’t stick around to explain. It seems that for some reason, Robotnik thought it was a good idea to send Sonic to the future to avoid him getting in the way of his plans, but didn’t specify how long and the Omni-Viewer decided that six months was enough time for the damage to not be too bad without making Robotnik suspicious. This all seems a bit convoluted, but one thing the news sections of the comics have been talking about a lot lately is (the then upcoming) Sonic CD, so I do wonder if this plotline was perhaps inspired by the time travelling in that game

Looks like six months was more than enough time for Robotnik to take over, however. And yes, literally a few pages after I said “I think they wanted to move away from the game badniks to up the stakes because it was getting a bit silly”, we get surveillance camera eggs flying about, which is one of the silliest things I’ve seen from this comic so far. But I’m not changing my earlier statement to pretend I have a bigger brain, because that’s not how I roll

There’s a lot going on in these three panels of a trooper badnik threatening a squirrel. At this stage, every time I see a random squirrel, I have a moment of “Is it Sally?” but this one isn’t wearing a bow and mentions having a wife. So, here are four potential options: 1) Random squirrel person (boring!) 2) Sally & Tufftee’s parent 3) It’s Shorty the Squirrel and he just doesn’t mention to the Freedom Fighters that he is/was married when he later joins them 4) It is Sally Acorn, she’s just not wearing her bow today and her wife, Nicole, is never shown on-screen Pick whichever one you like best Both more than that! In the last panel, this badnik refers to Robotnik with they/them pronouns. I believe this was possibly a mistake, but even so - diversity win! The tyrant who destroyed your home is non-binary!

At first Sonic is hesitant to destroy the badniks and risk hurting anyone trapped inside them, but mysterious squirrel person confirms that these troopers have no animal batteries, so Sonic doesn’t hold back on destroying them.

We end this issue on what I think is more establishing the on-going struggle than a direct cliffhanger, so I’m still going to count this story as a two-parter, unless the next issue contradicts me. Sonic swears to wipe Robotnik off Mobius and then we switch to Robotnik confirming at he’s taken over the whole planet, not just the Emerald Hill Zone
…And we’re here! We’re at the point where one of the main struggles of StC is setup! Now, I’ll say up-front that Robotnik’s rule in StC doesn’t last for the comic’s entire run. We will reach a point where the Freedom Fighters take him down and over struggles present themselves in his absence, just like when he was taken down in Archie. But for quite a long time, the Freedom Fighters vs Robotnik is the conflict we’ll be dealing with in StC and I’m looking forward to seeing that play out. We already have Johnny and Porker having travelled through time with Sonic, but I honestly don’t know if the Freedom Fighters form off-screen or if we’ll be seeing that happen in the coming issues. Personally, I’m hoping for the latter, but this comic hasn’t disappointed me so far, so I’m excited to see where they’ll go from here
