Tumbbad is unlike any Indian film I have seen before. It is a horror fantasy folklore film. Yes, a true mishmash of genres and an incredible one at that. It took me so much time to wrench myself out of the world of Tumbbad. Ever since I had seen a poster of Tumbbad years back, I was eagerly awaiting the release of the film. And oh boy, wasnt it worth the wait. Director Rahi Anil Barve creates a macabre world dominated by greed and ends up creating a sensational film that would be talked about for years to come. What I loved about the film is its ability to scare you without using even a single horror trope. Its wildly original and wickedly crazy. Sohum Shah plays the antagonist Vinayak with so much passion that it is impossible not to applaud his craft. That he decided to back the film as a producer when everyone else had shunned the film makes me respect him even more. Deepak Damle as Raghav is top notch, Anita Date as Vinayak's wife shines, Ronjini Chakraborty is fantastic and Mohammad Samad as Vinayak's son is terrific. Such is the world created by writers Mitesh Shah, Anand Gandhi, Adesh Prasad and Rahi Barve that you believe all that is happening on screen. Tumbbad is that rare film which doesnt really take any shortcuts to achieve perfection. DoP Pankaj Kumar's lenses capture the town of Tumbbad in all its gloomy glory and the production design is one of the best you will ever see. The score by Jesper Kyd is rousing and takes Tumbbad to another level. It has been difficult to write about this film. I witnessed so much brilliance in those two hours that encapsulating it in a short review is very difficult. This film needs all our support and encouragement. If such films work, then we would get many more of this kind. Do not miss it at any cost. You can thank me later. 🙂 . .
