THE PHILADELPHIA ANGLE (or Noah’s t-shirt theory part 2)
AMC recently posted a teaser to the Rick Grimes movies, where we see a helicopter fly towards a city skyline. It was eventually revealed that the city in question is Philadelphia, indicating that Philly will play a significant part in the films. Of course, we still know almost nothing about this project, but for now I’m gonna assume that Philadelphia will at least make an appearance in the films.
Tumblr media
To me, the new teaser and the Philadelphia connection was extremely interesting, because I’ve been spending some time analyzing a scene that incidentally is the only time in the history of the show (that I can remember) that there has been a Philadelphia reference.
The scene in question is the one from 2x8 “Nebraska” where Hershel has started drinking again and disappears from the farm. Glenn and Rick go after him to try to get him to come back with them. They find him in his favorite bar, and while they’re in there trying to convince him to come back with them, two strangers enter the bar. It is revealed that they have traveled from Philadelphia. A fight breaks out, and the two strangers are eventually killed.
I have been working with that scene for a while, because it contains some really interesting symbolism that I’ve previously discussed here:
https://frangipanilove.tumblr.com/post/183736635005/sirius-and-the-north-star-or-pigs-feet-and-frosty
Although I’ve spent a lot of time analyzing the symbolism in the bar scene from “Nebraska”, I’ve been unsure on how it fits into the larger picture, and also on how it is relevant from a TD perspective. I know the scene is significant, but what does it tell us? How is it relevant to Beth?
The newly released teaser for the films offers a new piece of the puzzle, and I’ll try to explain how below.
A few weeks ago I posted my theory on Noah's t-shirt, where I explain my thought process on how Noah's t-shirt ultimately points to episode 10x2 and/or 10x10. Of course we are all aware of how the «Get Well Soon» clock poster from Beth’s room at Grady possibly points towards these two episodes, and we have seen multiple theories on the significance of that clock poster over the years.
My take on all of that is explained here
https://frangipanilove.tumblr.com/post/185522170650/noahs-t-shirt-theory
The interesting thing about the newly released teaser is that it offers a connection to a sort of continuation of Noah's t-shirt theory, because in the bar  scene from 2x8, one of the Philly guys is also wearing a very interesting t-shirt:
Tumblr media
Where Noah's t-shirt had the words «one one recording studio» written on it, the Philly dude’s shirt has a picture of a shark as well as the number 11 on it. Apparently the text and the shark refers to a 11-U baseball team from Manahawkin, NJ, and the number 11on the back of the t-shirt is written, well…»one one».
Like, you know…
...like the text on Noah's t-shirt.
Tumblr media
What a tremendous coincidence!
Two t-shirts, several seasons apart, both with an animal image as well as the number 11 (or “one one”, if you will).
It’s almost as if there is a theme..
Tumblr media
The shark t-shirt refers to a baseball team. This is a huge point, and something I will have to adress in a separate post. But for now, keep in mind all the baseball references around Beth, such as the bat seen by the train tracks from 4x10 “Innmates”, and Glenn picking up a bat while literally saying “Beth” in 5x9 “WHAWGO”.
Further, let’s talk about the shark on the t-shirt. Wanna know where else we saw a whole bunch of sharks in the same scene? In Noah's house, in his brother’s room where we saw Tyreese get bit, causing him to hallucinate. And as we all know, Beth was a part of this hallucination.
Beth, as well as a bunch of sharks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s a picture of a shark on the wall behind Beth, along with a painting of a dog, there’s a shark in the book shelf, there’s a poster of a shark behind Bob, as well as a giant shark’s head coming out of the wall next to him. There’s also a shark-shaped surfboard-like decoration on the wall behind the fabric with polar bears on it. I talked about the polar bear fabric in the Sirius/North Star post that I linked to above. I’ve also talked about the polar bear symbol in several other posts, such as this one
https://frangipanilove.tumblr.com/post/185964198900/fear-the-walking-dead-a-guide-to-understanding
and this one
https://frangipanilove.tumblr.com/post/186222365190/fear-once-again-serves-as-a-guide-to
And next to the polar bear fabric, there’s a clock.
Ah! The clock.
We’ll never tire of talking about clocks, will we? Take a good look at the clock from Tyreese’s hallucination. Beth is staring at this clock in the picture above, so it must be important.
Tumblr media
The hands point to the numbers “5″ and “10″. To be fair, one could argue that the hands point to the “5″ and the “9″, which would make sense, as this is episode 5x9 after all. It depends on how literal you want to interpret it. In my opinion, an approximate interpretation is sufficient, and I maintain that the clock could be interpreted as hands pointing to the “5″ and the “10″.
But remember what we’ve talked about (in Noah’s t-shirt theory among other places), that on an analog clock, the number “2″ (which indicates the hour) can also be read as “10″ (indicating minutes). So both of the numbers “2″ and “10″ can be read  as “2″ and “10″. Or they can be read 22, whickh is pretty spectacular for reasons I will elaborate on later in this post.
In this particular clock from “WHAWGO”, there’s also a hand (whick probably indicates the set alarm) that points to the “8″. So we have a set of hands that can be interpreted as pointing towards episode 5x10 “Them” which is when the music box woke up.
And we have hands that can be interpreted as pointing to episode 8x2, which is the episode forshadowed by Noah’s t-shirt theory (link above), the episode when we saw the “Blue Heron” painting behing Rick.
But guess which episode in also points to!
If you swich around the numbers “8″ and “2″, you simply get 2x8!
Episode 2x8 “Nebraska”.
Which is none other than the episode I mentioned above, where we have the Piladelphia dude in the shark t-shirt, with the number “11″ (one one) written on the back. Can you see how this all creates a pattern? It’s a complex pattern, but a pattern none the less.
Further, 5x9  “WHAWGO” is the episode following 5x8 «Coda». The clock has hands pointing to both the number “5″ and the number “8″, which of course means it can be interpreted as pointing to episode 5x8 “Coda”, when Beth “died”.
Gimple ensured us of the importance of the clocks. This is what he meant.
As I explained in my Sirius/North Star post (link above), sharks were referred to as «dog-fish» back in the olden days. So that’s another tremendous coincidence, don’t you think? Shark references doubles as dog references, “shark” and “dog” references can be used interchangebly. It certainly puts the dog painting and the shark pic on the wall behind Beth in the above pic in a different perspective.
Tumblr media
The Philly dude’s shirt had a picture of a shark on it. Noah's t-shirt had a stylized version of the «Blue Heron» painting seen behind Beth in «Still», and later behind Rick in 8x2 «The Damned».
Also, as I’ve repeated several times, I believe “beer” and “bear” are in reality the same symbol. We get a confirmation of that here, where there is a polar bear directly above where the word “beer” is written on the fridge behind the bar. I’ve also argued that the “bear” symbol is a reference to the star constellation Ursa Minor, or Lesser Bear. In North America, this constellation is usually referred to as the Little Dipper, and as we know, the North Star (Polaris) is at the end of the Little Dipper. The polar bear on top of the fridge confirms this connection (polar bear points to Polaris, the North Star). And the North Star is a major Beth symbol due to her picking up the DC spoon in “Still”.
Tumblr media
The heron incident in 8x2 “The Dammned” was foreshadowed all the way back in season 5 (again, see Noah’s t-shirt theory) and while confirmation bias will sometimes play tricks on your brain, causing you to interpret «evidence» in a way that favors or confirms your pre-existing beliefs, that was not the case with the Blue Heron painting from 8x2. I had worked out the theory on it years before 8x2 aired, and I sat down to watch the episode, prepeared to see something related to «resurrection». In the «Noah's t-shirt» post I explain in more detail how I reached the conclusion that led me to anticipate major «resurrection» symbols in 8x2. There was, in addition to Noah's t-shirt, in 5x15 “Try”, the presence of a digital clock showing 06.30. If we interpret that as a reference to episode 6x3 “Thank You”, it’s significant that in 6x3 we witnessed the infamous «dumpster gate», tptb wanted us to believe that Glenn was dead. You know, when in fact, he wasn’t. Much like they want us to believe that Beth is dead, when in fact, she’s not.
In other words, 6x3 was the episode when Glenn DIDN’T die. It was the episode when he simply continued to stay alive.
(Also, if you read 06.30 on an analog clock, you’d find both hands pointing to “6″, perhaps referencing 6x6 “Always Accountable”, an episode full of Beth references, but that’s a post for a different day)
Other notable resurrection-themed incidents of 8x2 «The Damned» includes the «resurrection» of Morales, a character not seen or heard from in 7 seasons, and finally Morgan's little death fake out moment, where he pretended to be dead, when in fact, he wasn’t. Much like…yeah, you know.
Of course, what none of us could have known back when 8x2 aired, was that Andrew Lincoln was planning to exit the show. I’ll admit that I was confused as to the meaning of the reappearence of the “Blue Heron” painting in 8x2. However, as soon as it became known that Rick was to exit the show while still staying alive within the extended TWD universe, things became clearer. The heron is thought to be the bird from the original phoenix myth. It appeared behind Rick. He survived, although the characters believe he’s dead. The Blue Heron painting appeared behind Beth while she said “we made it”, and that is some fine symbolical evidence of both Beth and Rick being alive. The symbolism around them is the exact same.
Back to Rick. He survived only because he was saved by Anne, who arranged for a helicopter to pick him up and give him medical assistance. And by the way, I haven’t posted my “Cat” theory yet, but the main takeaway is that cats are popularily believed to have nine lives. In other words; cats are resurrection symbols. That has been my working theory for the longest time, and it was more or less formed after observing how Carol in season 3 was believed to be dead, but later resurfaced and famously stated she had “nine lives”. After Fear’s Daniel Salazar “rose from the dead” AGAIN, this time with a cat by his side, I concider this theory confirmed. Cats = “nine lives” = resurrection. I’ll definately do a more thorough post on cat symbolism later, but the reason I bring it up here, is because guess what; Anne, who saved Rick’s life, was a bit of an artist, and one of her more well-known works was this spectacular blue Picasso-style cat:
Tumblr media
You could in fact argue that Anne’s blue cat symbolized Rick’s resurrection.
And never forget there was a blue helicopter present in Tyreese’s hallucination in 5x10 “WHAWGO”, along with all the sharks. And Beth.
And this is where the movie teaser comes in, because that helicopter that saved his life? It seems like it might have traveled to Philadelphia. I could be wrong, because it's still early and we know almost nothing about the films, but at least at this point, it seems like the helicopter transported Rick to Philly.
To have the same symbolism appear around both Rick and Beth, while knowing for sure that Rick is alive, it certainly indicates that Beth is alive also. And the heron itself is associated with the Phoenix myth, in that an (now) extinct species of heron on the Arabian peninsula is thought to have been the original representation of the Phoenix. Plus, both herons and helicopters are flying creatures. Helicopters are called “birds” in slang terms. And I also want to point out Beth “flipping the bird”, first to Daryl, then later to the burning moonshine shack.
When the Blue Heron painting (which represents resurrection) appeared around both Beth and Rick, and we know for a fact that Rick is alive, it’s logical that the same goes for Beth.
Subsequently, the very same logic would apply in relation to the shark on Philly dude’s T-shirt in 2x8, and the sharks in Noah’s brother’s room in 5x9 «WHAWGO». As I mentioned, sharks were once called “dog-fish”. I meticulously explain my interpretation of the dog symbolism in the Sirius/North Star post that I linked to somewhere above, so I won’t get into that here, but I want to mention that there were at least a couple of dog-paintings/drawings/pictures in Noah's brother’s room in 5x9.
So to try to summarize, the Philadelphia reference in the Rick Grimes movies teaser might prove to be very interesting from a Team Delusional perspective.
But there’s more. The filming of yet another TWD project has recently started up; the third spin off, currently known as “Monument”. It has been described as “TWD for teens”, and they filmed on location at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia this week. Interestingly, this picture from TSDF suggests that it was transformed into “Nebraska State University”. Make of that what you will, but it’s certainly worth mentioning.
Tumblr media
Finally, I try not to read too much into it, but I thought it was worth mentioning that the next episode of “Fear” will be called “210 words per minute”. Like I’ve previously mentioned, a lot of the symbolism on TWD seem to point to certain episode number combinations, such as 10x10 (forshadowed by Beth’s Get Well Soon poster from “Slabtown), 8x2 (forshadowed by Noah’s t-shirt theory) and 10x2 (see Noah’s t-shirt theory). In this post I discussed the clock from 5x9, and how it possibly pointed to episode 5x10, among others.
It so happens that the next episode of “Fear” in fact will be season 5 episode 10, or “5x10″. And there is a possible reference to episode 2x10 in the title. 2x10 is when Beth tried to commit suicide. Also, if you switch the numbers around, you get 10x2, which I have talked a lot about in Noah’s t-shirt theory, and ultimately it can (on an analog clock) be read 10x10. Like the “Get Well Soon” clock from “Slabtown”.
So if you watch “Fear”, keep an eye out for interesting symbolism!

So Daryl first admits that no one is safe anymore and you can’t promise safety to anyone.
Then he asks the guy the three questions and tells them there’s a place with relative safety they can go with him to.
How are they NOT supposed to see that as a possible trap into another bad cult-ish situation? I think they turned on him specifically because of those three questions and the offer he made to them. Because they don’t believe him and they didn’t want to get caught up in another bad group sitch.
Daryl needs Aaron along with him to do the recruiting bits because I honestly feel like that’s where/how he failed and why they turned on him.

The “Daryl as a Mary Magdalene-figure” theory
Part three:Glass pyramids, greenhouses, holes through the roof, Hannah Fairlight
There is a theme of greenhouses with holes through the roof that keeps coming up in TWD. @twdmusicboxmystery has written a few excellent posts on that, such as this one:
http://twdmusicboxmystery.tumblr.com/post/170000670794/frosty-the-snowman-template-and-the-greenhouse
And this one:
http://twdmusicboxmystery.tumblr.com/post/162472580434/hole-in-the-roof-theory
Remember how in TDVC, the sarcophagus of Mary Magdalene rests under the inverted glass pyramid at the Louvre.
Tumblr media
In TWD we don’t see many glass pyramids, but we do have those greenhouses. Glass houses. There is the one from 4x4 “Indifference” where Sam and Ana found fruit in the greenhouse because there was a hole through the roof so that the water could come in. They made sure to mention that there was a hole through the roof. Keep Ana in mind until later, she is important.
Tumblr media
Then there was the one in 6x6 “Always Accountable”, in which TPTB was really not subtle at all in making sure we understood that greenhouses = tombs. There was even two walkers, side by side, encased in glass just to drive the tomb theme home.
(side by side theme explained here http://twdmusicboxmystery.tumblr.com/search/Side%20by%20side )
Earlier in the episode we see a very interesting sequence. We see Daryl, tied up, suddenly finds an opportunity to escape, he grabs the bag and makes a run for it. When he slows down, he quickly manages to get his crossbow out of the bag, and shoots a walker that has been approaching him. The walker falls to the ground, and Daryl and the audience catches a glimpse of a Cherokee rose. We know that in TWC, Cherokee roses represents the hope of finding missing loved ones. And as a parallel to TDVC, this is Daryl’s rose line. Where Robert Langdon in TDVC followed The Rose Line through Paris to find Mary Magdalene’s sarcophagus buried under an inverted glass pyramid at the Louvre, TWD’s Mary Magdalene-figure Daryl follows his rose line, the Cherokee rose, and it bring him to -not a glass pyramid, but a glass house, and it’s most certainly a tomb of sorts, because of the two glass encased walkers, but also because this is where Tina dies in a horrifying reprise of “Coda”, where a different blond girl was lost right before Daryl’s eyes.
Tumblr media
In 5x4 “Slabtown” there is not really a greenhouse per se, however there is a reference to the greenhouse theme when Beth and Noah have a talk after he was beaten up by the Grady cops. They are in a room that obviously functions as some sort of plant nursery, with the bright light lamps providing enough light for the plants to grow in what appears to be a window-less room. And to further confirm the greenhouse-with-holes-through-the-roof- theory, Beth’s word to Noah in this greenhouse-like plant-nursery-room are worth noticing; “we’re not trapped”.
Tumblr media
The greenhouses in TWD represent the glass pyramid under which Mary Magdalene’s sarcophagus rests in TDVC. Mary Magdalene’s tomb.
There is one huge detail though, a detail that makes all the difference: the greenhouses in TWD have holes through the roof, which symbolically represents the opportunity to escape them.
Let’s go back to the after-credits scene from “Coda”. Morgan walks by the school, takes a glance at the magazines that are laying around. The magazine cover headline reads “The Palindrome of Hannah Fairlight”, and there is a picture of the artist herself, who by the way has a wolf tattoo that also deserves to be mentioned (btw, I have no idea whose picture it is, l don’t remember where I got it from, let me know if you know anything about it).
Tumblr media
A palindrome is a word or a sentence that reads the same backwards and forwards, suck as “Hannah”. There is also another magazine there with a reference to a “top 44”. The interesting thing is that if you interpret the “top 44” as a reference to episode 4 of season 4, you find palindromes within palindromes. The episode numbers make up a palindrome, 4x4. And in that episode we meet the aforementioned Ana, whose name is a palindrome, and considering that what brought us here in the first place was “Hannah”, “Ana” seems like a very intentional character, yet she died almost immediately after being introduced. What was the point with all of that?
“Hanna Fairlight” from the magazine in “Coda” has a wolf tattoo. “Ana” from 4x4 has a compass tattoo.
Tumblr media
The thing with compasses is that they always point north. Keep this in mind, it’s important, I will later attempt to tie it to the North Star symbolism as well as the “cooler” symbolism. And don’t even get me started on wolfs, they obviously represent Beth, and hopefully I’ll finish my post on Sirius/Dog Star/Dog references in the near future. But first and foremost, let’s consider Ana’s role in 4x4. She was on her way to the greenhouse to collect more fruit. She was on her way to the greenhouse with a hole through the roof. She never made it back. Rick and Carol found her leg, the one with the compass tattoo, it was positioned in a way that kept the gate from closing properly. Opposite of the umbrella from 7x16, that prevented the gates if ASZ from opening, but part of the same symbolism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She died, symbolizing how greenhouses are tombs, but remember that as long as they have holes through the roof, there is an opportunity to escape them.
To to be continued in part four

The “Daryl as a Mary Magdalene-figure” theory
Part two:The Da Vinci Code, “The Last Supper”, glass pyramids, greenhouses
In my opinion, TPTB’s effort to establish Daryl as a Mary Magdalene figure essentially start in 4x13 “Alone”. This is also the episode where the “The Da Vinci Code” references become really obvious. The episode starts with a musical montage where we follow Bob right before he is found by Daryl and Glenn. We see him wandering around on his own, looking lonely and depressed. At one point he builds some sort of “cage”, so that he can later sit in it and drink his cold medicine (Cold-Z, a “cooler” reference, keep this in mind until later). We then watch him climb on top of a trailer (@wdway reminded me of the fact that this trailer is identical to the wolf trap trailers in 5x16) and we get this shot:
Tumblr media
This seems like a good time to say a few words about “The Da Vinci Code” plot. Our hero, Robert Langdon, is called to the Louvre museum in Paris to assist in the investigation of the murder of the museum curator Jacques Sauniere, whose dead body is posed like The Vitruvian Man, a famous sketch by Leonardo Da Vinci.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back to TWD. Bob’s pose in “Alone” is similar to both Da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man” and Jacques Sauniere’s dead body in “The Da Vinci Code”. This, in my opinion, indicates that TPTB intentionally inserted TDVC imagery into this particular episode of TWD. And there is a good reason for that.
The premise of TDVC is that Mary Magdalene and Jesus were in a relationship, had a child, and that the Merovingian kings of France were descended from the bloodline of Mary Magdalene and Jesus. Throughout history, this secret was protected by a series of prominent characters such as Da Vinci himself, who according to The Da Vinci Code inserted certain clues in the painting “The last supper”. The most central clue suggests that the character officially recognized as the disciple John in reality is Mary Magdalene. With that in mind, one can see how it is easy to compare the painting to the White Trash Brunch/kitchen scene from “Alone”, like here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to the similarities between “The White Trash Brunch” and “The Last Supper”, comes of course the shot of Daryl taking a good, long moment to admire the plaque of “The Last Supper” in 5x2 “Strangers”.
From a TD perspective this is interesting because it is yet another way of establishing Beth as a Christ figure. From a Bethyl perspective it is interesting because if there is a TDVC template in “Alone”, one has to remember that in TDVC Jesus and Mary Magdalene were actually romantically involved. Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ love interest, and if Daryl is Mary Magdalene to Beth’s Christ, it also suggests that Daryl is Beth’s love interest. Furthermore, in many accounts from early Christianity Mary Magdalene is the first person to see the resurrected Christ, something which calls for interesting speculations in terms of who will be the first person from Team Family to see the “resurrected” Beth.
The TDVC template doesn’t end with the kitchen scene. In TDVC, after Robert Langdon has solved numerous mysteries across all of Europe, in the final pages of the book he follows “The Rose Line” a fictional name given to the Paris meridian line, in search of the “Holy Grail”. He suspects that if he follows “The Rose Line” it will lead him to it, and he eventually realizes that the Holy Grail is the bloodline of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. The relevance to TWD, TD and Bethyl is that “The Rose Line” has lead Robert Langdon to the inverted glass pyramid outside the Louvre Museum, and he realizes that Mary Magdalene’s sarcophagus is secretly hidden underneath the smaller pyramid below the inverted glass pyramid.
Tumblr media
In 6x6 “Always Accountable” Daryl is initially taken captive by Dwight and Sherry. When Tina has an accute illness incident and faints, Daryl takes the opportunity to escape. He runs through the woods, before he eventually stops to untie his hands and get his crossbow ready to take down an approaching walker. As the walker falls, we see a Cherokee rose attached to its back, and it is as if the sight of the rose change Daryl’s attitude towards the situation. He notices a cooler containing insulin, and decides to return the medicine to Tina who is obviously in a bad place without it (take note of the cooler, it’s part of a “cooler” theme I will expand on later)

So in TDVC we read about Robert Langdon following The Rose Line through Paris, eventually realizing that The Holy Grail is the bloodline from Mary Magdalene and Jesus, and that the sarcophagus of Mary Magdalene is secretly hidden under the smaller pyramid below the inverted glass pyramid by the Louvre Museum.
In TWD, there aren’t any inverted glass pyramids, but we do have a recurring theme of greenhouses (glasshouses) with holes through the roof.
Think back to the greenhouse with the hole through the roof in 4x4 “Indifference”, when Rick and Carol come across Sam and Ana. They aren’t really the surviving kind, but before she dies Ana makes sure to emphasize that there’s a greenhouse there with a hole through the roof, so that the water can come in and the fruit can grow. It seemed like an incredibly random storyline at the time, but nothing is random in TWD.
Tumblr media
Also think back to the greenhouse “tomb” in 6x6 “Always Accountable”. Think about how there’s a Cherokee Rose that leads Daryl to turn around and return the insulin to Tina, Sherry and Dwight.

Think back to the greenhouse with the hole through the roof on 4x4 “Indifference” and the greenhouse “tomb” in 6x6 “Always Accountable”. Think about how there’s a Cherokee Rose that leads Daryl to turn around and return the insulin to Tina, Sherry and Dwight. Think about how the Rose Line through Paris eventually led Robert Langdon to Mary Magdalene’s sarcophagus underneath the inverted glass pyramid outside the Louvre. Think about how the holy grail turned out to be the bloodline from Mary Magdalene and Jesus. Think about how the Cherokee Rose, that represents hope of finding lost loved ones, led Daryl to return the insulin to Tina, so that she was able to properly control her blood sugar, “wake up” from her almost unconscious state. The Cherokee rose eventually led him to ...not a glass pyramid but a glass house/greenhouse with a hole through the roof. There are some clear parallels between TDVC and TWD here.
Tumblr media
In TDVC, Mary Magdalene’s sarcophagus was revealed to be hidden under the inverted glass pyramid in front of the Louvre museum. A pyramid is a tomb. We haven’t seen glass pyramids in TWD, but we have seen glass houses/greenhouses. We’ve seen “glass-sarcophaguses”. We haven’t seen Mary Magdalene’s sarcophagus under a pyramid below an inverted glass pyramid (tomb), but we’ve seen Daryl in a coffin in a funeral home. And we’ve seen Beth and Daryl share the trunk of a car, universally accepted by TDers everywhere as a foreshadow of something that happened off screen during those missing 17 days, something which ended with Beth for some reason being “gone”, something that no one talks about, something that was “hinted to” by having Maggie find the Beth-walker in the trunk of a car in 5x10 “Them”. And we’ve of course also seen the car with the white cross drive away with Beth, leaving a panicked and heartbroken Daryl to chase after it all night.

The “Daryl as a Mary Magdalene-figure” theory
Part four: The North Star, coolers, compasses
Let’s talk about the numerous “North Star” references on this show. Remember how Beth is obviously tied to the Little Dipper through her symbolical act of picking up the DC spoon in “Still”. Little spoon = Little Dipper. The North Star/Polaris is at the end of the Little Dipper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is of course Carl’s adorable words of advice to Judith, that if you ever find yourself lost at night and away from home, just find the North Star, it’s at the end of the Little Dipper, it will lead you home.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, in that very same episode, Carl and Enid are out in the woods, Enid finds a blue star shaped balloon with a washed out note attached to it. She says “it shows that we’re not alone”. I believe that is a reference to 4x13 “Alone”.
Tumblr media
Then there are the words on the wall in The Kingdom in 7x2 “The Well”, the North Star represents hope.
Tumblr media
In that respect one could argue that the North Star and the Cherokee rose represents the same thing; hope of a happy reunion with loved ones, hope that the “missing girls” will find their way home. Sophia came home, but as a walker. With regards to Beth, it remains to be seen, but I know what I think will happen.
Then there is my favorite, the Alaska license plate from 5x16 “conquer”. The state flag of Alaska depicts the Big Dipper with Polaris/the North Star, and the Alaska license plate that Aaron found on the trailer/wolf trap has the Big Dipper with Polaris/the North Star on it.
Tumblr media
And it is interesting to note that in Carl’s conversation with Judith he chose to refer to the North Star at the end of the Little Dipper. In a way it makes sense, because that’s where it’s located. However, from a navigation standpoint it is universally known that the easiest way to find the North Star on the night sky is to first find the Big Dipper, then draw a line from Merak and Dubhe in the Big Dipper to the North Star, as illustrated in the picture above. Yes, it is at the end of the Little Dipper, but those stars are usually so faint that even a thin layer of fog or mist or light pollution will prevent you from finding it, while the stars in the Big Dipper are much brighter and a whole lot easier to spot on the night sky. It is as if in Carl’s conversation they intentionally brought up the Little Dipper, which of course is a reference to Beth and the DC spoon.
Another “north” reference was of course Ana’s tattoo from 4x4 “Indifference”. The North Star’s position on the night sky is fixed. It always points north. Ana’s tattoo was of a compass. They point north. It’s a North Star reference.
Tumblr media
In 6x6 “Always Accountable” (another palindrome episode btw), Daryl is taken captive by Dwight. He then sees an opportunity to escape, grabs their bag, makes a run for it, shoots the approaching walker, sees the Cherokee rose, and then notices a cooler that contains insulin in the bag.
Tumblr media
He decides to return the cooler with the insulin to Tina, who was unconscious but wakes up when she is injected with the insulin. The theme that is communicated by TPTB here is that the cooler/North Star symbolism represents something that brings life/is life-giving. They then venture on to eventually find the glass pyramid....excuse me, I meant glass house...excuse me I meant greenhouse, that also is a tomb, as we know. But it has holes through the roof so there is the symbolical opportunity to escape, should you should be so inclined.
But consider the coolers. Coolers keep things cold. It is cold up north. Coolers represent cold, cold represents the North Star, it symbolically points north just like Ana’s compass tattoo, just like the North Star at the end of the Little Dipper. The cooler theme comes up again and again in TWD, and through the insulin injected into Tina we understand that whatever’s in the coolers/North Star symbolism represents something that brings life (Tina was unconscious, the insulin made her wake up) In combination with greenhouses with holes through the roof, it symbolically explains how a certain Christ figure (Beth), originally perceived to be dead, then somehow is brought back to life again, and is able to “escape” from her “tomb” and find her way back home.
I first noticed the cooler theme after watching 5x10 “Them”. The walker in the barn, the one that reminded us of Beth in an episode that had such a heavy Beth presence, was laying on the floor surrounded by stuff and thangs, random mess and clutter, but those two blue coolers stood out.
Tumblr media
Then later, in 7x3 “The Cell”, I noticed two identical coolers in the room Negan offered to Daryl if he had forsaken his own identity to become “Negan”. Later Eugene stayed in that room while living at the Sanctuary, and those two coolers were often seen on top of the kitchen cabinets.
In “Alone”, Bob was drinking “Cold Z”. Beth and Daryl were drinking “Frosty Cola”. They are both examples of the cooler/cold/north theme. Same with Glenn in 5x2 “Strangers”. He found three silencers in a mini-fridge. Both Bob and Glenn were Beth-proxies at different times.
Tumblr media
There are so many cooler/North Star references, I’ll talk about a few more of the important ones in the next part of this monstrously long theory. I thought I had material for four parts, but now it will at least be a part five, and after that who really knows, well see😄
