Things from TWD Comics that have Mentally Scarred Me
*note: I have never actually read the comics, all of these are things I found online despite having no intention of finding out anything about the comics, so sorry if some stuff is wrong or left out.*
Andrea and Dale dating (this one isn’t horrible, but I still get grossed out because I can only picture the actors from the tv show)
Judith being crushed to death after Lori is shot
The group of bandits graphically attempting to r*pe Carl (who’s like 10 - aka season 1 Carl, which is horrifying to think about!) to the point where they get his pants off, as well as them outright saying to Rick “we’re gonna fuck the boy” (ew, ew, ew!!! And I thought the show version of this scene was bad!)
The governor repeatedly r*ping Michonne & her revenge on him
Negan bashing Glenn’s head in
Negan threatening to let his men gang r*pe an 11/12 year old Carl (even if it is a bluff)
Lydia licking Carl’s exposed eye socket (and the fact that they dated at all, since she’s 16 and he’s 13, but I’ve already ranted about that in another post)
Alpha letting the whisperers r*pe their women, including her own daughter (geez, there’s a LOT of r*pe in this comic, I get that it’s the apocalypse, but what the hell??)
*I know this list is kinda short, but these are the worst ones I could think of off the top of my head, maybe I’ll add more later, but probably not*

TWD things I could talk about forever (that aren’t bitching about the show’s writing)
Enid (and how she had SO much more potential than she got)
How Negan’s redemption arc in the show would work so much better if he had a daughter character
Tbh his character in general
How Negan is a foil to both Rick and Maggie
How Negan is a textbook colonizer
How All Out War is actually a great allegory for the struggle between capitalism and communism
Lydia and her relationship with Alpha

carl and lydia hcs bcus i love the friendship i made up for them in my head
- carl is one of the first people to grow close to lydia, wanting to give her a chance like he did with michonne all those years ago
- carl forces michonne to let lydia stay with them to 'protect her' but rly he just wants to hang out with her more
- he tries to reach lydia how to write but his handwriting is ATROCIOUS (canon), lydia doesn't really notice so she also learns how to write and her handwriting is also atrocious
- carl teaches her how to read through comic books, they spend hours pouring over them together so she can learn and eventually lydia can read full on novels, but sometimes carl still reads to her
- carl is the reason why lydia figures out she's a lesbian and what it all means, after carl tells her that he's gay and dating ron
- they both love the rain, and if it's raining in alexandria you WILL find them outside just like playing in the rain or sitting on the curb talking
- lydia and carl both had their childhoods taken from them, and when they're together they find themselves reclaiming childhood again
- carl can cook, lydia can bake.
- carl carves lydia little figurines of animals out of wood for her and she loves them, she has shelves full of them.
- carl introduces her to his music taste, which is a lot of early 2000's emo and 80s/90s punk/goth music and a bunch of indie shit, lydia loves it
- lydia and carl get stuck on babysitting duty but they don't mind, lydia loves judith and rj and they love her too, they treat her like just another kid
- a lot of late night conversations in weird places, like the hayloft of the barn, the roof on the house, even in the empty jail cell, they always seem to know where to find each other
- carl talks to lydia about his dad, alot, sometimes he feels like he can't talk abt him to the people who knew him, but with lydia he can, and lydia loves to hear abt him
- they're both autistic. enough said
- carl helps lydia truly piece together her memories of early childhood and then brings her things that she remembers fondly, like some stuffed animals because she used to have a big collection, makes dinners she remembers enjoying
- carl goes nonverbal a lot, lydia less so, but they learn sign language to be able to communicate when one of them doesn't talk, which also has the added benefit of talking to kelly, who becomes a fast friend
- lydia likes bugs, like a lot, carl is more of an animal guy, and they trade facts with each other while hunting
- no one rly understands their friendship or how they're so close, they barely get it either, but it doesn't really matter to them
- they're in a queer platonic relationship and they don't even know it
- after michonne leaves carl shuts down for a while, too stressed knowing he's leading a community and taking care of his siblings, lydia is the one to bring him back to end the whisperer war
- when the whole commonwealth thing goes down they live in a one bedroom with jude and rj and all have to share mattresses, but carl and lydia work their asses off to get them a better place to live happily
- they are GLUED to each others side, if carl goes lydia goes, and if lydia goes carl goes, they have both lost so much that they can't bare to be apart
- they share clothes, neither of them know how this started but once they're in the commonwealth they barely have separate wardrobes anymore.
- one time lydia stole a shirt from him that ended up being his dad's shirt that he took with him, and he expected to be mad, but he never told her
- they are THEE baddest duo, like they can both kickass and really are not afraid of doing so, carl is more quick to violence than lydia is, but once she gets there she can get brutal too
- neither of them are particularly brutal though unless they are threatening the other one or judith & rj
- after everything calms down they go back to alexandria and take almost everyone from the kingdom, hilltop and alexandria with them, carl leads alexandria in his parents absence and lydia accidentally becomes his second in command
- they go on vacations to oceanside together all the time, they both love swimming and the beach, collecting sea shells and glass, fishing in the ocean and playing with the kids
- they learn to use bows together, but carl is much more of a sharpshooter and lydia loves her bo staff from henry
- carl definitely lets lydia braid his hair
- when they lived in the commonwealth and shared a mattress lydia would kick him in his sleep OFTEN
- carl if a blanket hog and runs cold and lydia runs hot like a furnace, she doesn't mind not having blankets but she still wakes him up and forces him to give them back because she's petty
- carl taught lydia how to ride a bike and lydia taught carl how to skin a rabbit (he hated it)
- carl makes knives, much like in the comics, and lydia tests them out for him, if you don't know where to find carl you can probably find him in the blacksmith studio, and you'll also find lydia there, talking about nothing
- they really could talk for hours about nothing
- lydia tells him abt the whisperers a lot, because she knows she can trust him with all of her conflicting feelings of what it was like
- carl tells lydia about everyone he has known before and lost, about his life before, she likes hearing abt lori and his friends, she was fascinated that they had lived in a prison
- carl's immune, and when lydia was almost bit trying to save elijah carl took the bite for her, and he survived, even though it was the most tense few days for the entire group, waiting for him to turn
- lydia didn't believe when he said he was immune, thought that maybe a rogue whisperer had bitten him before, and she was by his side the entire time comforting him even though carl was like 'dude i'm not gonna die'
- lydia was the one who gave carl the idea for wearing sunglasses with one lense popped out to cover his eye, but carl mostly goes without covering it in the comfort of his community, as none of them are scared of him
- lydia and carl have matching scars on their arms from an attack by a smaller group on one of their runs
that's all i've got for now but i'm sure there's more coming soon 🫡

Okay, so I made a post a while back about how it was gross for Carl and Lydia to have had sex in the comics when Carl was only 13. (Before any of you yell at me, I do think that Carl and Lydia are cute together, I just think it was unnecessary to have them have sex since Carl was so young). I got that age from Wikipedia, but now that I’m actually reading the comics, I’ve realized that Carl must actually be younger than that.
In issue 82, right before he loses his eye, Carl says that he’s around 8 years old.
Tumblr media
Then, in the letters pages of issue 127, it says that it’s been 2 years from the end of issue 126 (the end of all out war) to the beginning of issue 127.
Tumblr media
Now, between issues 83 and 126, I know that there a few time jumps here and there, but none are longer than a few weeks. For Carl to be 13 in issue 127, he’d have to be 11 in issue 126, which isn’t the case. It didn’t take 3 years to get from Carl losing his eye to Rick slitting Negan’s throat at the end of all out war. It couldn’t have, because in issue 97 Maggie reveals she’s pregnant, and she hasn’t given birth yet by the end of all out war. So there’s less than 9 months between issue 97 and issue 126, and there can’t be more than a few months between issue 82 and issue 97. The point I’m getting at, is that even if it’s a year between issue 82 and issue 126, that would still only make Carl 9 years old by issue 126. Maybe 10 since Carl says he’s “around” 8 and that they missed his birthday in issue 82, so he’s not completely sure and could be closer to 9. Either way, that would make him 11 or 12 (at the OLDEST) after the time skip, not 13. Which makes it all the more weird that him and Lydia have sex, even if they are living in a world where kids grow up faster.

A rant about TWD S11 and the amount of screen time for different characters
This is a BIG rant, so I'm putting a break here to not annoy anyone who don't want to read it. If you want to read it, there's lots of love for TWD characters and hate for AMC right bellow.
Okay, so I'm seeing a lot of hate to the amount of screen time Eugene/Josh McDermitt had this season. And I would like to point out how this makes me both sad and angry - and how it begins with Eugene but it's not about him.
So, Eugene deserves to be developed as any other character on the show. He's part of TF/main cast. McDermitt's on the show since S5! That's seven years of commitment! And McDermitt always gave us an incredible performance - so much that he had to quit SM on 2018 because he suffered so much online abuse from the fandom who disliked Eugene's arc with the Saviors. He could have left the show altogether but he stayed because he has love for his character and TWD.
But, as said, this is not just about Eugene - it's much deeper than that, I think. It involves all the main characters arcs on S11.
Other talented and marvelous actor who decided to stay with us until the end, dedicated years of his life to TWD and also got his share of online abuse? Seth Gilliam/Father Gabriel. Gabriel's arc was pretty chopped on S11. Remember all of his struggles with his faith on 11 A? It got mostly resolved off screen. And don't even get me started with his relationship with Rosita.
What about Christian Serratos/Rosita and Ross Marquand/Aaron? Fan favorites since their first appearances on S4 and S5. Legitimate TF members and two others main characters left to dry on S11! We've barely saw them!
Aaron's arc begun with him struggling to keep ASZ running, then they got him randomly involved with another weird cult-like group that ended up being Negan's new group because oh yeah he used to work on something like that before the world ended lets use that so GA can see we didn't forget this info about him whatever and now he is stranded in a horde with chances of being killed by a smart walker just, you know, because.
Rosita was supposed to be part of the CW rebel group and fight corruption inside the police force but we never saw that happening! And don't even get me started with her relationship with Gabriel. Yep, I'm repeating the phrase because COME ON!
Ok, GA didn't like their romantic relationship, but at least let us see they properly ending it and being a good example of respectful exes who are still friends and co-parents. TWD IS ABOUT FOUND FAMILY DINAMICS! GIVE US THE DAMN FOUND FAMILY DINAMICS! Oh, with this I also wnat to highlight that we should have seen more Aaron + Gracie and not those what three scenes they gave us in 24 fucking episodes.
My point is: Father Gabriel, Rosita and Aaron deserved to be featured as much as Eugene was this past season. Especially because none of them have spin-offs on the future. These actors had to say goodbye to their characters with only a handful of scenes. Characters they cherish and love, characters they brought to life for years!Seth, Christian and Ross stuck with them (and TWD fandom, a very difficult fandom, by the way) even when they were gifted shit arcs and/or minimum screen time. Most of them got screwed over by the storytelling season after season. McDermitt/Eugene got a few chances to shine on S11 and we are complaining??? We should be complaining about how Gabriel, Aaron and Rosita didn't had the same chances! Not hating on Eugene! They all deserved to be upfront this last season and have really meaningful and deep arcs to reflect their years and journeys. But nope. Sidelined, all of them, Eugene being the exception but mostly on 11C.
Lets now talk about the main MAIN characters of the show, shall we?
Lauren Cohan/Maggie and JDM/Negan got stuck together on a never ending fight for dominance that is STILL not resolved (and bordered on sexual tension. Why? Just..why??)! What's the point of having so much time wasted/dedicated on such angsty and tiring relationship?
I'm sure Lauren would have preferred to explore Maggie's relationship with her son and her found family and to fight to rebuild The Hilltop or face the consequences of being a leader who abandoned their people and came back to find almost all of them dead. We could have seen the motherly love, the undying grief for Hershel/Beth/Glenn, the struggle to reconnect with TF and The Hilltop folk, the urgency to prove herself worthy of the title of leader again. It would be interesting and play with Maggie's layers.
I don't know what JDM would've liked for his character but he must also be tired of Negan's never ending redemption arc. And I have nothing against Annie and the baby thing besides the fact that looks unrealistic as fuck after we saw him begging to Maggie to murder him so he could be with his dead wife on S9 + "Here's Negan" especial episode. Yeah, okay, he burned Lucille twice - wife and bat - on said episode so he got closure. I get that. A new wife and baby on the way off screen? Not so much. Joining a weird group with a rough leader that looks like a cult? Even less. By the way, you guys remember those people? Did they even got a name?
And then, obviously, Caryl. I don't have the energy to discuss anymore how incredibly wrong Caryl were handled this entire season. No energy. Just tired. All the missing opportunities. All the time spent apart. All the incredibly necessary heart-to-heart's that not happened. All the pointless Leah thingy - by the way, every single point of the Reapers arc (Gabriel and the other priest; Pope choosing Maggie because God or a bonfire told him to; Leah trying to recruit Daryl who wanted to save her after she tried to kill him multiple times, only so she could become Maggie nemesis without never seeing her before; everyone that was killed for shock value; Alden's death and its 3 seconds impact; Elijah mourning his sister and then being pushed to be Lydia's new boyfriend because we have to do something with this kid, yada, yada, yada) had no payoff whatsoever.
Anyways..what I'm trying to say is: every OG/main/important character of this fucking show suffered from mediocre storytelling throughout the entirety of S11. All of them.
Even fan favorites newbies got sidelined. Eleanor Matsuura/Yumiko is the only one who had personal reasons to not appear on 11A and 11 B (she had a baby). I'm not a Nadia Hilker/Magna fan but I hate how she was mostly forgotten this season. She's an interesting character and after being missing for most of S10, she got sidelined for S11 too. Angel Theory/Kelly and Cassady McClincy/Lydia are SO TALENTED and loved by everyone and were rewarded, respectively, by becoming a walking translator and an unwilling participant of the 'let's see who unnecessarily loses a limb this season' game.
I could go on and on and on but, again, no energy. And I think I wrote too much already. In short: Eugene is not to blame. Everyone should have had meaningful arcs like Eugene. He deserved every second of it. ALL OF THEM EQUALLY DESERVED IT. All of them characters are special and loved and deserving and should be treated with respect and celebrated after so many years of existence. AMC, Gimple and co. made the decision to waste their (and ours) precious time with Reapers and other groups and characters that I don't remember or weren't even given names, CW stormtroopers, an anti-capitalism narrative that was very important but lasted two episodes, impossible to understand time jumps followed by a creeping pacing also impossible to understand followed by more wtf time jumps, and lots of Carol scenes on the kitchen because obviously that's what we want to see her doing..cooking and baking! Ha!
It's not about the amount of screen time each character got. It's about the non-existent quality of it.
AMC plays dirty, guys, and all of us suffer the consequecences. Even side characters like Diane, who is owned some peace of mind after being a soldier for every fucking battle TPTB invents. If any side character deserves a happy ending is her.
I rest my case.

Okay, let me pull up real quick. And, surprisingly enough, I don't have anything negative to say this time! (I do) Let me just start off with FOR THE LOVE OF GOOOOOOODDD!!! I CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT HER!!! Ever since I started getting interested in the comics, I was WAITING to see her. Fuck the rest of the Whisperers. JUST. HER. I can't sleep, eat, or simply wake up without her on my mind. I love the way they drew her, how she acts, her expressions, her personality, EVERYTHING. And THAT'S why I'm pissed off at her tv counterpart. I wish I could rewrite the TWD show's script, man. I wouldn't SLEEP until I found Lydia's irl lookalike. I wrote all this for nothing.
