#twt is full of people going like ''i personally see them as father and son but everyone has their headcanons''

there are two wolves inside you. one wants to respect all headcanons. the other thinks it’s super weird that a relationship between a god and a demigod that has sworn undying loyalty to him can even be interpreted as familial

svt as brooklyn 99 characters
tags: b99 au, i am obsessed, i’ve been rewatching this series for the 600th time now, only 80% accurate, i stretched it a little bit
thank you to alice (koogyv on twt) for the amazing thread that i highly interacted with as inspiration. there are many similarities. i expanded upon it more.
this is my take:
det. jake peralta
hoshi
“i wasn’t hurt that badly. the doctor said all my bleeding was internal. that’s where the blood’s supposed to be!”
arguably, this is the best pairing made. he’s silly, hard-working, creative, and most of all -- he’s gunsta think about the turtles. even as a jokes-first seriousness-second type of person, jake is a thoughtful and caring person who would put himself down to save others. he’s sharp, perceptive, and great at deduction, but often discredits himself with his great delusion, playfulness, and childish nature. he’s a trendsetter and loves to joke around, and when he has a great thought, he’s going to put it into action. (“yeah, that’s right. i’m about to monologue, son.”) his favorite movie is die hard (hoshi as a shawol), is canonically broke (hoshi’s constant money loss due to him spoiling everything), and tries to annoy suspects into confessing their crimes.
men can have duality. they can be serious and also put orange soda in their cereal. hoshi, as a Super Gemini™ knows all about it. he’s playful but knows when to be serious and takes his line of work very seriously. sure, he has some growing up to do and can immerse himself in a different role (horanghae <3) very easily, but he plays to his strengths and that of others with his determination and persistence.
capt. raymond holt
seungcheol
“wait a minute. this isn’t the championship cummerbund. this is some common cummerbund. and, you’re not cheddar. you’re just some common bitch!”
“this bitch? please. watch.” (to the dog, ‘some common bitch’) “shake… shake! psshh. idiot.”
this is probably the most obvious and predictable choice after jake=hoshi. a born leader, full of wisdom, and no-nonsense… well, some nonsense is okay. captain holt is ambitious and looks after his squad with both care for their goals and their personalities. even though he may seem a little unapproachable or stoic, he’s actually a really funny and goofy guy. he laughs when he eats marshmallows (“a marshed mallow? don’t mind if i do.”) he’s very adamant about his passions (like john phillip sousa being the skrillrex of his day) and his a very consistent guy (ref. rock painting no. 367). he is sassy to the max and will tell you things exactly as he finds them. and he does NOT mess around when it comes to his dog.
cheol, most of all, is the ultimate dog dad -- just like holt. cheddar is to holt like kkuma is to cheol. he spoils his dog, and he is proud of it. he’s someone who caters to the learning style that each person needs: stricter but with jokes for jake (hoshi), encouraging for rosa (woozi), detailed with a binder and written formalities for amy (seungkwan), and with actions (ref. the croque monsieur) for charles (dk). he’s attentive, thoughful, and silly at heart.
det. amy santiago
seungkwan
“gross, rosa! those are our dads! i mean, that’s not what i think. captain dad is just my boss. never mind, i’m teaching father the math. whatever, rosa!”
super badass, but also a teacher’s pet, know it all, and scrapbooking expert. may come off as super uptight or a buzzkill, but genuinely cares about the other detectives on the squad. when you have hella big aspirations, it’s not that unreasonable to see why competitiveness, sharpness, and intellect are his best traits. under all of the work-oriented personality, there’s someone who is ambitious, thoughtful, clever, and protective of the people he loves. it’s hard to not be so uptight and to let loose (as opposed to some totally scheduled fun!), and don’t make fun of him if he sucks and is horrible at it. (title of his sex tape.)
seungkwan was my top choice, mainly because of his competitiveness with hoshi (jake) as svt’s most famous frenemy pair. there’s a lot of responsibility and workload that seungkwan carries and continues to put on his shoulders, which his members love and appreciate (just how the squad appreciates and acknowledges amy’s dedication to being a detective). things can get wild and crazy sometimes, which is why seungkwan just needs to recharge sometimes.
det. charles boyle
dokyeom
“i got this low tag performance polo with moisture wicking technology. kept me dry all morning. and a dry boy is a smart boy.”
if you’re looking for a supportive best friend who will always cheer you on, this is him. he’s a major foodie, he loves jake (hoshi), and his arch nemesis is sergeant peanut butter, who is a horse. he’s possessive and jealous almost as much as he is a superb friend, which is obvious by the way he instantly is suspicious of every other best friend jake (hoshi) can make in his life. (“don’t make any new best friends! haha… maybe you shouldn’t go…”) he gets jealous of many, like old beat cop partner stevie schillens, brian (?) from camp, and even cannibal jail cellmate caleb. also definitely dresses up as people from halloween that no one but him can understand. he is just someone that is the embodiment of living life according to his passions. very caring, thoughtful, and funny.
dk was a good choice for boyle for me since he is super clingy and also is a supportive friend. even if he knows it’s silly or mischievous, he will play along. dk is relatively less prone to disgusting and gross sexual innuendos than charles, but is still super excited to share his jokes and hobbies. has a lot of holiday cheer and his down to be friends even after being turned down.
det. rosa diaz
woozi
“plans are plans. i’m a badass, not an anarchist.”
mysterious, a little scary, but reasonable and thoughtful. rosa is a character that’s easy to stereotype, though also arguably one of the more complex characters in this show. hard working is an understatement, and even though he may not be the most outwardly affectionate at first glance, rosa is super thoughtful. work comes first, but through the many trials and tribulations that life throws, business remains separate from personal… except the friendships. rosa went through the academy with jake (hoshi), so they’re really close. as much as jake jokes around and everything, they still trust each other and work with each other really well. (“diaz has been chuckin’ d-holes into my mouth since the academy.”) on top of that, is a bicon (bi icon).
woozi was my go-to choice on this one. his demeaner seems a little intimidating (especially because of all his muscles now too!), but he means good. he gives off mysterious vibes, but he’s just figuring it out. now he is truly no-nonsense, and he makes sure others know this. he’s still down for the different personas and everything, but he lives his life by a strict set of rules. his neighbors think he’s emily goldfinch (woozi)… his coworkers think his name is rosa diaz (wooahae)… wait. what?
sgt. terry jeffords
mingyu
“terry loves yogurt.”
literally just a big softie that looks scary/big/muscular but is actually so babygirl. he’s so caring and loves the squad to death, always making sure that they have all the resources they need to survive. even when other captains come and go, terry is always there. terry loves yogurt, terry loves love, and terry loves foreign films.  kind of has a rivalry with boyle (seungkwan) for strange reasons instigated by boyle himself, but is supportive nonetheless. (“hey, people like the way i look.” “sure they do, big guy.) he’s actually very well-educated (studied abroad in japan), is a great dad, and is always down to help others work out the right way.
this was such an obvious choice for me (with the only other option being cheol). mingyu is an inherently kindhearted person like terry, but also knows how to draw boundaries. he is someone who is worried about the safety of the people around him because he’s a family man, but also someone who loves to get down as vacation terry. also talks in the third person, but it’s okay since he’s hot.
gina linetti
myungho
“aren’t you forgetting something?” [...] “no! pay your bill! damn, who raised you?”
the human form of the 100 emoji. would be the perfect human president, based upon his skillset, dance ability, and bloodlust. he is the paris of people. has been jake (hoshi)’s childhood friend and went through high school with him. cares enough to steer jake (hoshi) on the right track (ref. brandon bliss) but to also enable him in their own goofy shenanigans (the DDC + the lacroix siblings). super smart and well-versed in the people around him because only gina would suggest savant (vernon), the hacker, to become their new IT guy. iconic entrepreneur.
i know that hao is super humble, and gina says that being humble is her best trait. despite this, there is no one else who would love to not be involved with all this police nonsense (bc gina “does not listen to a lot of things you all [the detectives] say”) but also be relevant. she’s actually very street-smart, great at comebacks, and the ceo of her own company that she literally just made up.
dr. kevin cozner
wonwoo
“that’s the oompiest oomph you’ll get.”
prim, proper, and unhinged. he loves raymond (cheol) but most of all, allows love to prevail. works as a classics professor at a university, spends a sabbatical in france to enrich his teaching experience, and loves a good croque monsieur. would absolutely go off on jake (hoshi) if he gatekept a nicolas cage movie that's a period piece set in greece based on some dumb book. despite his no-nonsense attitude sometimes, he is still down to dress like a pervert to go to the library with jake (hoshi). also, super badass because he runs over seamus murphy with a car.
i was kind of going for wonwoo’s quieter but more serious and studious vibes. i think super knowledgeable, especially about gaming and editing, while kevin is knowledgeable about classics like boetheus and the odyssey. both are super smart, sassy, and protective people.
doug judy
jeonghan
“i sold a guy a fake pekinese. twas a cat.”
he’s in and he’s out! he is there for the vibes and the elaborate schemes. he will outsmart everyone in the NYPD and get away with it. one of jake (hoshi)’s best criminal friends but would still betray him every time. he would definitely lie and tell his family that he owns an architecture firm instead of being the pontiac bandit, and jake (hoshi) is his assistant mangy carl, whom he saved from a life of living on the streets selling his body. goofy and silly, but don’t underestimate him. you’ll always be one step behind him.
i think jeonghan is definitely slick and goofy enough to be doug judy. above all else, jeonghan’s mind works harder than anyone else in mafia. just like how he immerses himself in different roles (and often makes them up) in don’t lie and bad clue, doug judy has transformed into many different roles in his life (cruise ship singer, architect, etc.)
capt. jason stentley (CJ)
jun
“okay muchachos, let’s roll up on these muchachos!”
great start, and love the double use of muchachos, jun. became a captain due to his extreme luck. he is just always in the right place at the right time. showed up to his first day in grey sweatpants because he “totally biffed it” and spilled hot cocoa on himself. introduced himself as ‘captain stentley’ but didn’t like how formal that sounded. ‘captain jason’ wasn’t it either, so CJ was the move. numbers are so crazy, and overall so, very supportive. he just wants to help.
i was just thinking of someone a little silly and laidback. will be strict if you ask him to, but he’s honestly more there for the vibes. he can be a little clumsy, but i was mainly just going for the slightly airheadedness vibes and the lovable nature.
det. adrian pimento
joshua
“whoo… haha… hey chuck! it’s pimento.”
just a little bit insane. it’s a side effect of being undercover for 12 years for jimmy “the butcher” figgis, but i digress. he sometimes still calls himself paul sneed due to being extremely traumatized. overall just a funny and great character. used to be boyle (dk)’s roommate and just found himself in his son’s closet at some point in time… got mistaken as a closet monster… just normal human things. (but he was also screaming with dk and his son.) has a very riveting, intense, and sexy relationship with rosa (woozi).
this one was a little more of a stretch, but only because pimento is actually insane. all the years of ptsd has made him into a very strange person. josh is a little strange, and maybe he could be pimento if pimento was watered down into a lacroix. (like, the flavor is barely there.) there’s a distinct slight insanity that josh has (ref. gose episode the8 and the 12 shadows) that is hard to replicate.
fire marshal boone
dino
“your only move is passing the ball to jeffords and running across the field.” “i’d like to see you try!”
so done with the entire police department. will always be down for a rivalry or argument but genuinely a softie. just generally suspicious of jake (hoshi) and charles (dk) due to their antics and strong adherence to the rivalry. demands an apology because this is the fire department’s jurisdiction! all of that comes crumbling down though, when jake (hoshi) reveals his sad past with sal’s pizza…. but he still competes with jake (hoshi) on arresting the criminal in the end. some things never change.
i was honestly looking for someone who would love nothing more than to call out hoshi and dk on their BS and tomfoolery without enabling it and thought of dino. boone is a pretty lovable character for someone who is supposed to be a villain of some sorts, and it fits in pretty well with dino. plus, he’s the head of the fire department, kind of like how dino had to choose being the maknae of svt versus being the leader of a younger group. (kind of.)
! vernon
okay i was genuinely very torn about who should be vernon, because i genuinely had a lot of different options.
corey park (savant)
hacked into a police precinct’s computer system just because he could. (he only exposed everyone’s search history.)  “it was like taking candy from a baby.” he was turned in by his mom, but fortunately now has a job -- courtesy of gina (hao). very intelligent and laid back
i saw vernon here because he definitely has a mischievous side. while his pranks and jokes are on the mild side, he’s definitely still a troublemaker. he’s down to work for the greater good.
cheddar the dog
“this isn’t cheddar, this is just some common bitch.” a very special someone. definitely is seungcheol and wonwoo’s child. loves wedding cake and is very well-behaved. extremely intelligent and loves participating in halloween heists. does not like being jake (hoshi)’s dog bra ://
this was based on alice’s thread and was so funny. if cheddar were a human, vernon would be cheddar. the sass and intellect can only be matched by Thee hansol vernon chwe.
other fun character pairings that i thought of:
kkuma as cheddar the dog: two words -- so spoiled. also would be cheol (captain holt)’s baby. i digress.
jun & dino as young hitchcock and scully: just two people motivated by helping the city. kind-hearted and brave people, who may or may not have gotten addicted to wing sluts while checking in on a witness that their captain screwed over by not putting in the witness protection program. outstanding people who became a lot more interesting, to say the least….
josh as madeline wuntsch: strangely tense relations with holt (cheol) due to their rivalry, but overall an outstanding cop. ½ of svt’s evil twins so you know he’s down for some evilness. oh raymond, i notice you haven’t done your time as a beat cop…. (if josh is here, who’s guarding hades???) may be a cheuksin, a korean toilet ghost who--
jun as mlepclaynos (the clay is silent): opens the door, is questioned by detectives, takes the picture of the suspect. he’s from neokrakagovia and celebrates dogs losing their virginity. jun definitely would! less because he’s weird and more so because he’s so kind and willing to go with the flow that it just happens. later says he’s not mlepnos. did you sell him horse blood? would you like to buy horse blood? he plays the violin beautifully. “guitar.” (ref. some day morning)

(copy/paste with some extra bits from my twt circle, very short Ori story)
When Ori was old enough to start understanding that he had a father but he's not alive anymore so he can never meet him, it sparked so much curiosity about who he was!
Adair started telling him stories of their adventures together at bedtime instead of fairy tales, and Ori wanted to know what he looked like, and what it felt like to spend time with him. Adair said "He looked a lot like you, but without the scales or tail. And he was the friendliest person you'd ever meet, always smiling and encouraging others to be their best!" but Ori kept asking, saying he wished he could see him for real.
So Adair thought an outing was in order.
As a first stop, Adair took him to the memorial overlooking Ishgard, and told him how it was his father's favorite spot. Ori could feel the wind cutting through his sweater, but he did like how small the city looked from so far away. He understood the spot must have been special to his parents and felt a reverence for it.
"Is this where father is?" Ori asked, eyeing the tombstone.
Adair hesitated for a moment. "In a way, maybe. This place was his favorite spot to come think. And now, it's where people who loved him come to think about him."
Ori looked down and the flowers next to the stone, absorbing his dad's words.
"If you mean to ask, 'Is he buried here?', no, he's not. His body was laid to rest in the Fortemps family mausoleum." Ori looked up at Adair quizzically. "But I like to think," Adair continued, "your father lives on in the hearts of the people who loved him. The soldiers you'll meet today, Grandpa Edmont and your uncles, the Haillenarte siblings... and you and me." Adair looked down at Ori's awestruck face with a kind smile.
Ori thought about this for a long moment, holding onto his dad's tail when a particularly strong gust of wind nearly had him lose his balance.
Adair barely caught Ori's small words over the wind "...but I still want to meet him."
He knelt down, pulling his son into a proper hug. "You can't meet him face to face," he said, looking into Ori's now teary eyes. "But you can get to know him by spending time with people who loved him. Ask questions about him, many would be happy to tell you stories." Ori beamed at that idea, sniffling his tears away.
So Adair took Ori to visit Camp Dragonhead and pointed out the portrait hanging there. He encouraged him to talk to the soldiers, many of who still remembered Haurchefant as if he was just there yesterday. Ori was excited to meet so many people who remembered Haurchefant as a friend! The soldiers perked up at having a chance to talk and play with Haurchefant's child as well, and the chilly stone hall radiated a lighthearted warmth.
In the coming months, Ori kept asking to go visit his dad's picture every day. Adair or Edmont or sometimes Emmanellain would take him whenever they could. He'd have a nice time making friends with the soldiers there and eventually became like a little mascot for them.
Then one harsh winter Ori caught a terrible cold and couldn't go visit his father's picture and friends at Camp Dragonhead for quite a while.
As a friend of Adair's from Scion business, Alphinaud had heard of how much Ori loved to visit his father, and he sketched Ori a picture of Haurchefant that he could keep in his room while he was recovering. The soldiers from Camp Dragonhead sent him little gifts too, wishing him well.
When he was well enough to come visit again, the soldiers hosted a big dinner just like Haurchefant loved to have, full of music and warm drinks and laughter. Ori had a blast! And Adair felt like Haurchefant was right there beside him, sharing in their son's joy, and Adair's.
-
(idk enough about kids to know how old ori should be here. do kids understand death and people existing before they were born by 3 years old? or is that a more difficult concept? I'm kinda imagining him at about 5 or 6 here, old enough to be curious about the world and people..? as of post endwalker he's just turned 3, so this is quite a while after that probably. he's been to camp Dragonhead before, but was always too enchanted by the chocobos to learn much about the people around him.)

[ I'm new to Tumblr, give me a break, honestly. Would appreciate some constructive criticism, thanks! Also yes, I'm not the smartest, so *please* no calling me dumb, I already know I am TwT, 3,151 words and weird, old original characters. I doubt anyones gonna read this but if you do good luck 😂]
"Matthew, honey?" Michelle chimed as she heard her front door shut, and in came her son, who was barely smaller than her, he had a very large bruise on the side of his eye.
"Hey mama…" He mumbled, she sighed sadly and held the boy's hand, pulling him gently to the kitchen and getting an ice pack after he sat down, the all too familiar small hissing sound coming from beside him. Matthew smiled softly as he looked at his adorable de-fanged snake hissing at him gently, wanting attention. He giggled and pet her head gently, she began to slither her way up into Matthew's lap, her forked tongue licking his nose softly. He laughed and kissed Nature's head softly. Michelle smiled.
"There hasn't been any new updates on the court case." She sighed, pulling out her phone and snapping a photo of his black eye and bruise. "Are there anymore?" She asked, looking at him, Matthew nodded and set Nature on the kitchen table, standing up and pulling his turtle neck off. Michelle cringed and inhaled sharply at her sons bruised and scabbed over torso. "Gods...Baby, I'm so sorry. I ought to have full custody of you by now, but there are these other people trying to fight for you…" She told, shaking and taking the pictures.
"Really…? Who?" He asked, pulling on his turtle neck again and sitting down. Nature slithered in his lap after waiting patiently while Matthew pulled up his tights to show the bruises on his legs, Michelle sighed sadly and took the pictures.
"A doctor and cop. I don't know who they are, they're anonymous, and the judge won't even tell me why they're fighting for you. I promise you baby, I'll win this court case. You'll be safe in my arms soon." She shook and sobbed a bit, hugging Matthew who nodded and hugged her back, Nature smushed between them, but the snake wasn't complaining.
"I hope so…" He shook, clutching her. "I'm gonna go lay down...I-I need a nap…" He shook, biting his lip softly.
"Alright honey. I'll wake you up for lunch." She told, pressing a gentle kiss to his bruise. Matthew just took Nature, going up to his room, setting her on the bed gently as he went to change into thermals. He shuddered and bit his lip as he looked at himself in his full body mirror. It was their routine for a while. He would come home from a tortuous week of beatings from his father, he would walk half way across town to his mothers since his father refused to drive him, he would strip and she'd take photos for evidence against his father, he'd put his clothes on and take a nap. It was stupid, and tedious, but he couldn't help it. He desperately wanted his schedule to change, wanting SOMETHING, to be different, but so far, nothing was popping up.
"Hi there, miss! My name is Jacob Otori, I- Oh! Mrs. Anderson, hi!" Jacob laughed, Michelle giggled.
"Hi there Jacob, odd for you to come to my house, eh?" She giggled. Matthew heard the all too familiar voice of his crush and patted out of his room to listen to the conversation.
"I didn't know it was your house! It's very nice, ma'am!" He smiled. "I was going around and promoting the fundraiser. I wanna beat last year's goal. We raised just above 300k last time, I'm aiming for 750k this time." He smiled brightly. Michelle looked at him shocked.
"Wow, you certainly are confident. We are just a small town, Jacob." She sighed with a smile.
"It was Natali who set the goal, I really just said I wanna beat how much we raised last year, I didn't really have a say since she's the treasurer." He giggled.
"I find it amazing. I'm definitely donating this year. Oh! Do you wanna come in? Matthews here for the weekend, he's taking a nap at the moment, but he always wakes up in around an hour. Would you like some tea?" She smiled.
"Oh, Matthew? Like the one with the wildly dyed hair?...I barely really know him, I didn't know you had a son." He smiled awkwardly. 'I have heard of him, everyone says he's a freak, though...I should give everyone a chance, those are just rumors. And I need a break, talking to people is tiring…'
"Oh, yes. I sometimes forget he dyes his hair, it obviously doesn't look natural, but he's had it for so long it just looks normal to me." She hummed.
"I wouldn't want to be a bother…" He smiled again, chuckling awkwardly.
"I'm gonna tell you the truth because you're such a good guy, Jacob, but Matthew has a hard time making friends since he's so anti-social. I know he doesn't have any friends at school, and I'm just trying to get him at least a caring friend like you. Im aware of all of the rumors about him, and I'll tell you most of them aren't true. There's a lot that's been going on lately, I'm trying to win custody of him from his father, but that isn't going well…" She admitted, looking down. Jacob was a bit shocked, but intrigued. "It's been the same thing over and over every time he comes here, I can tell he's stressed and school isn't helping, nor is my counseling. I just want to make sure he has a friend I know is a good influence on him and is a sweet caring person. Especially one he can tell things that he wont tell me, it is sometimes better to get it out in the open than just keep it bottled up. I know he's not telling me quite a few things, and I just want to make sure he's okay. So please do me a favor and at least attempt to befriend my anti-social son?" She hummed, looking up at Jacob with a slightly pleading look in her eyes. Jacob was very prone to giving in to puppy dog eyes.
"Of course, ma'am. I've actually been trying to figure out a way to approach him, not only because of all of the rumors, but there have been major scenes with him, like passing out in class, his panic attacks...I'm not making fun of him or anything, but a lot of the other kids did...And I just recently realized he was in most of my classes. When I started actually paying attention to him, no one really notices him, and sometimes he'll just leave the room without saying anything. The teachers know it too, they'll either watch him, or ask a student to go check on him." He ranted, looking away awkwardly. "And I've caught him staring at me multiple times, I think that's what made it so hard to approach him. Most of the rumors I've heard about him is that he's gay and has a crush on me. I don't really mind, but everyone makes it seem like such a bad thing." He told, Michelle listened, pulling Jacob into her home, which he obliged too. Matthew was still listening.
"Matthew isn't very mentally stable. He has insomnia, very bad anxiety, not to mention he was always and is bullied due to looking like and dressing like a girl." She sighed.
"I don't see a problem with it, really. I don't understand why some kids bully this practically invisible kid because he doesn't like to act his gender. Natali and Tash both act more manly than me and no one bullies them." He chuckled bashfully, Michelle giggled.
"If only more people had your mindset Jacob, such an uplifting personality. Matthew comes to my office anytime he feels like he's going to have a panic attack. I'm guessing he's noticed your staring lately, because its people looking at him that stresses him out." She smiled.
"Oh…! I'm very sorry, I didn't realize...I guess it was always weird he just left the room without alarm whenever I stared at him." He mumbled, sighing.
"I tell the teachers about Matthew, they feel bad for him, so they basically let him do what he wants, as long as he gets his work done. Which he always does." She sighed, glancing up at the stairs and seeing Matthew up there she perked up, giggling a bit. "Matt, it's not nice to eavesdrop." She mentioned, making Matthew jump and Jacob raise an eyebrow before turning around and looking at the boy, who squeaked and ran to his room. Jacob was a bit confused while Michelle giggled. "He eavesdrops a lot. He's quite sneaky. Like you said, he's practically invisible." She smiled.
"Ah, yeah." He sighed, giggling softly.
"Oh, and if he does come down, just a warning he had a bad bruise on his eye, he told me it was some bullies at school." She sighed a bit, Jacob immediately felt bad, but he also wondered how bad it was.
"Ah, I'm sorry ma'am. I let myself think I always catch the bullying at school, but clearly not." He mumbled.
"It's okay, sweetie, no ones perfect. Thats half of the reason I want Matthew to have friends...You would tell me whats going on, while he doesn't tell me the names of his bullies because he doesn't want to get them in trouble." She sighed, shaking her head softly. "Matt? Are you gonna come down?" She called out, Matthew was shaking a bit, thinking it over. "Come on, honey. Jacobs here, he's a classmate, don't you think you should at least greet him?" She told.
"Uhmmm...No?" He asked more as a question.
"Maaaatt." Michelle sighed, Matthew just padded off to his own room. "Sorry...He's not good around people. Especially not any that are his age." She sighed. "I'm going to get a kettle boiling. Feel free to go and talk to Matt." She smiled, standing up and walking to the kitchen. Jacob smiled and nodded, this was his chance to befriend the weird kid. He stood up, beginning to walk upstairs, he got to the door he thought was Matthews, beginning to knock on it. Said boy had creaked his door open to watch him knock on the door.
"Uhm...Matthew?" He asked out, looking at the door.
"That's the bathroom." The adorable bluenette mentioned quietly, the redhead flinched and turned around, his face bright red as he looked at the half of Matthews being from behind the door.
"Right…! I knew that!" He looked away awkwardly, making Matthew giggle. Jacob was a bit astonished he made the unusually quiet boy laugh. He was the first time he had even heard his voice. "Ah, uh- c-can I come in??" He smiled. "You were listening in on our conversation...I don't know for how long but you probably heard I had been looking for a way to approach you, y'know to be your friend." He smiled.
"I was listening since the beginning. You don't have to be my friend just because my mom asked you too. I'm the weird kid, you don't have to pretend like I'm any normal person." He hummed, looking at the floor.
"Its not just because of what your mom said! I really had been trying to find a way to talk to you, but anytime I tried, you just ended up walking out of the classroom…" He told.
"I didn't know why you were staring at me, it was stressing me out." He mumbled, looking away as his face lit up slightly.
"Understandable, but really, I do wanna be your friend. I guess we should get properly acquainted first." He hummed, clearing his throat and bowing politely. "My name is Jacob Otori, I'm from Japan, I'm 17 and I know both Chinese and Japanese." He smiled, Matthew giggled a bit at the formal introduction. "Now your turn, if you wanna, that is." He smiled patiently.
"U-uhmm...I-I'm Matthew Anderson, I'm 16, going to be 17 in October...U-uhm...I-I'm from Canada, I can s-speak French, G-Greek and Latin." He explained, shaking and looking away awkwardly, wondering if he sounded like he was bragging.
"You can speak French and Greek?? Wow! Honestly, Chinese and Japanese are so boring, but you got to have the tongue of a GOD to speak that complicated stuff!" He laughed, smiling. Matthew giggled, which actually turned into a laugh.
"Well...I-It is hard...B-But I can try to teach you." He mumbled, looking away slightly and shifting around.
"Really?! You would? Thats awesome!" He smiled brightly, Matthew smiled back awkwardly, but it was a genuine smile.
"Yeah...Uhm...Y-you can come in, but...uh…" He blushed madly, looking away in a bit of embarrassment.
"I'm not gonna judge you for anything you say, have, or do. Unless its just that bad, which you don't even look like you're capable of doing." He giggled, Matthew just laughed back awkwardly.
"O-okay...But it's still kind of embarrassing since I've never had anyone over before. My room's a bit...girly." He told, blushing. And opening his door, dashing back in slightly. Jacob just raised an eyebrow and walked in, finally seeing what Matthew meant. It looked like a room Natali would enjoy. The walls were a milk pink, the ceiling lined with star fairy lights which were illuminating a room. There was also a floor lamp and more than enough pop band posters literally any teenage girl would be obsessed with. He had a full sized bed, which was incredibly messy, but he had a cotton pink and blue blanket with bright white pillows. He had a small TV on a vanity which had makeup and school supplies around it, a few bean bags, and a rug and in the corner, the opposite of his bed, was a huge tank, but Nature was nowhere to be found. He also had a closet in the corner.
"Woah." He was only able to say. "This looks like a damn sanctuary! If only my room looked like this." He laughed. Matthew blushed.
"Really? It's so girly, though." He mumbled.
"So? I like girly things. I would kill for a room like this!" He laughed, Matthew smiled and giggled.
"Well...uhm, thanks." He giggled, smiling adorably. Jacob just smiled back.
"What do you wanna do? We could have a sleepover! My parents went out to fly home for their anniversary, so I'm free to do whatever." He hummed.
"S-sure...I'm sure mom wouldn't mind. And i-its an excuse to stay here instead of going to my fathers." He mumbled.
"Is it too personal to ask, or can I ask what exactly is bad at your dads? There are rumors around the school that he beats you, but your mom said most of those rumors aren't true." He asked, looking at Matthew who curled up to himself silently. Jacob immediately took that as a yes. He gasped quietly and crawled onto his bed with him, hugging him as gently as he could. "I'm sorry...My dads a cop, you know. We could report him." He told, rubbing his side gently as Matthew leaned into his touch.
"H-he always wins assault court cases. No one knows how...Its been difficult for mama to get custody of me because there's a third couple trying to get me. She doesn't know them, and I don't know them. They're anonymous…" He told, shaking and snuggling into him.
"Well my dad would make sure he gets to prison. This isn't just assault, its child abuse, Matt. Child endangerment, and this third party trying to get you? Who knows what's going on, but my parents would help your mother get custody of you." He mumbled, Matthew sniffled a bit.
"Please don't tell anybody the rumour is true…" He told, his lip quivering.
"Hey, hey, don't cry. I'm not going to tell anyone. I can't believe someone actually spread around something that personal, and not to mention they make fun of you for it." He sighed, pressing a small kiss to Matthews forehead, making the small Canadian blush madly.
"Th-thanks…" He mumbled, shaking. "W-wanna watch some TV? We have cable, but we also have hulu and netflix." He giggled quietly. "The desk I have is for natures tank and not the TV, so we have to sit on the beanbags." He smiled, pointing to the two purple beanbags sitting on the fuzzy rug.
"Ah, so...What is Nature? Like what kind of animal is it? I don't recognize the tank…" He told, following Matthew, watching him plop down on the beanbag, sitting on the other one as he grabbed the remote.
"Nature's my snake." He told as if it weren't a psychotic thing, Jacob stared at him.
"That's the last kind of pet I'd expect you to have." He mumbled, Matthew laughed.
"I have a mouse too, his names Dumpy." He told, pointing to the small cage underneath the vanity that was previously unseen.
"Dumpy?" Jacob laughed. "What kind of snake do you have? I'm surprised it hasn't eaten the mouse…" He admitted.
"Natures a domesticated snake. She's an Inland Taipan." He told, Jacob flinched and looked at Matthew dead in the eye.
"That is literally the most poisonous snakes in the world!" He called out in shock, looking around to find the snake, she wasn't in her tank and that was suddenly stressing him out.
"She domesticated, don't worry. She doesn't bite, she's actually really sweet, I've had her since I was six." He hummed. "She's 11 years old and I pulled out her fangs when I was little." He told.
"You're being serious?! You ripped out the most poisonous snake evers fangs?!" He stared at him with a startled expression.
"I don't really know where Nature is." He told, whistling a few times.
"Don't call her please-" He begged as a slithering was heard, her head popping out from under the door and slithering in, Matthew smiled as Jacob yelped and fell off of the beanbag.
"She's fine, really. Nature, show Jacob your teeth." He told the snake who slithered over to him, staying a lengths away, smelling his fear. She opened her mouth and showed her lack of fangs. "You can pet her, really she isn't violent." Matthew giggled and walked over, Nature watching her master. "Nature, love on Jacob." He smiled, petting her head softly as she slithered over to the Japanese American man, looking at him.
"Why's it staring at me." He asked, staring back at her.
"Let out your hand." Matthew giggled. "You saw she doesn't have fangs, shes harmless." He giggled. Jacob was still hesitant. "Nature, bite me. Show him you're harmless." He told, holding out his hand, Nature immediately dashed and bit in his hand, pulling away and licking Matthews hand and looking at Jacob, making sure he was looking at the nonexistent bites on her master's hand.

sometimes yoongi dreams about it.
jungkook tugging on the edge of his sleeve, asking him to follow. looking down at the shallow grave where his now dead father lies, blinking unseeingly at the words that are carved into the granite. limestone, he remembers, withers; turns soft, stone that is not strong enough to grow into trees, not strong enough to withstand the earth. jungkook, blinking back dry eyes, yoongi stupidly entranced by the purse of his mouth, hating himself with each elongated second.
in his dreams, jungkook tells him to leave. jungkook tells him to disappear, tells him to forget about him and forget about alchemy and forget, just forget, take out all the memories in yoongi’s mind about the past few years and simply vanish. jungkook, in reality, did this:
“will you go?” asked, simply, without a trace of judgement in his voice. “do you know what it means?”
and yoongi - yoongi didn’t know it at the time, how much he would come to regret the things that would pass. instead, he said, “i’m going. i want to protect people.” what he didn’t say: how can i protect you?
the jungkook in his dreams always cried, tears running down his face, holding himself away from yoongi. in the jungkook in his dreams blamed; told yoongi it was his fault; yelled about his father’s last days in madness over a science than loving his own child; blamed yoongi for continuing on the knowledge, for continuing on the madness, for believing in the volatile.
jungkook, in reality: simply smiled. looked away, didn’t cry. he gave yoongi the smallest, softest goodbye, and waited there at the foot of his father’s grave for hours, tracing the alchemical circle on his gravestone with dull eyes. it was not perfect; it would not make any transmutation; and yoongi left at sunset, something lodged in his throat.
the next time yoongi saw jungkook, he was coated in blue and his hands were red. fire burned blood like it vaporized water, if it got too hot enough. he had turned around to see someone - dark skin - with a knife aimed at his head before - the sound of a shot, the sound of a breath escaping a body, so much like the oxygen that’s needed to let something burn - and his assailant fell to the ground, one single spot at the side of his temple bleeding.
it was only later did he learn that it was jungkook’s doing; huddled in his afghan and his too-long bangs, his full cheeks, holding a sniper’s rifle and looking at every man woman child body as a target, yoongi thought desperately, desperately - how can i protect you -
for a moment in the in-between, there was silence. the sound of the battlefield. the staunch scent of blood and rotting meat, bodies, on the floor - yoongi knew what the smell of it was, had it buried into his nostrils, could not sleep at night only to be plagued by dreams of fire and lightning and burning - dreams of how his own personal hell was created by him, enforced by him, by simply snaps of the finger, by an inability to be nothing more than a human puppet pulled at by higher strings -
and then jungkook pulled down the hood of his afghan, and yoongi remembered how jungkook used to give him a bowl of stew during late nights of studying for whatever inane subject his master sent him, and suddenly yoongi didn’t know how to breathe and felt relief at the same time.
“lieutenant colonel,” jungkook had greeted him, in that desert with his brown eyes shadowed by black circles, his hands steady, a smudge of dirt next to the mole on his cheek.
“jungkook,” yoongi had replied, and felt his lungs expand.
the first friend he made - hoseok - someone who was just honestly another soldier in arms until he pushed yoongi out of the way of a shot - puts a hand on his shoulder and introduces him to the best sniper on their team. yoongi looks at jungkook and thinks about rosy-tinted days and experimenting with candle wicks. thinking that this power will be too hard to harness, too hard to protect, fire is volatile and wild and -
beautiful, yoongi used to think, warmed by the bonfire, sleeping next to an oil lamp -
destructive, he thinks now, looking at the open fields where everything has been razed to the ground.
sometimes he dreams about jungkook on the battlefield. dreams about accidentally burning him alive with all the innocent lives that yell at him to stop. watching jungkook’s wide eyes as he stares at yoongi past the graves, past the books, past the failed tries to spark. reaching out; in his dreams, jungkook goes, “please save me - “ and when yoongi reaches out a hand, jungkook slips right through his fingers.
in reality: jungkook has never asked for his help.
yoongi thinks that his dreams are what he wants jungkook to do. be angry at him. hate him. throw him away.
jungkook does none of these things. instead, he comes up to yoongi when the dust is still settling and tugs on the cuff of his sleeve. the skin of his wrist is covered by gloves and thick cloth but yoongi feels jungkook’s warm fingers anyway.
“you joined the military,” yoongi says, the first thing he says to jungkook in those absent years.
“i did,” jungkook pauses, “sir.”
“don’t.”
jungkook’s mouth purses. it’s not the same. yoongi thinks desperately: how can i protect you -
“i was wondering, sir. if you would do me a favor.”
yoongi swallows. his ghosts come up to haunt him at numerous times. sometimes he dreams about his master, jungkook’s father, half crazed and half genius, laughing over his notes, hiding them like they’re the most precious thing in the world. jungkook watching from beyond the doorway, reminding yoongi quietly that dinner is ready. “what favor?”
jungkook exhales, and it’s shaky. “burn me.”
the lines printed onto his back are intricate. they swirl and crisscross in a vivid diagram of red and black, arrows and lines, arrays and symbols. one of the most complex and carefully curved circles out there - one of the most - one of - yoongi thinks he’s going to be sick.
jungkook crosses his arms across his chest and hunches forward, naked, and yoongi stares at the nape of his neck. his hands are frozen.
he didn’t think - he didn’t know. he didn’t think a father could do that to a son. didn’t think it was possible to press these lines into someone’s body, someone’s skin, without it hurting.
yoongi thinks about rosy days and jungkook laughing and reading by the candlelight. they have passed. gone up in smoke.
“please,” jungkook says, and his voice cracks, and he’s not looking at yoongi. he’s staring at the floor. “burn it off.”
yoongi - the exalted and slowly rising hero of the war, flame alchemist, looks at jungkook’s back and feels his resolve crumble. feels his mouth dry. thinks about: jungkook sniping from the sidelines, covered by sand and hot air, thinks about hearing screaming -
“i’m sorry,” he says, and jungkook - smiles. sadly, just like he did that day. yoongi sees a glimpse of it just before he snaps.
sometimes yoongi dreams.
he dreams about golden days and the hot feeling of love, the redness of cheeks. he dreams about jungkook and his smile, how he used to look after both the fire alchemists in his house without complaint, how he used to play darts in his free time and never missed. he dreams about sneaking out with jungkook to buy shakes from the nearest diner and giving up on his reading only to find a glass of milk and honey next to him when he comes to. dreams about jungkook and yoongi in that tiny house in a far off village where the books piled high with information - knowledge - and he dreams about promises, especially the ones he made to himself, dreams about how can i protect you?
how do i protect you from me?
jungkook had always smiled. jungkook never asked yoongi to save him. yoongi fell and fell and fell and jungkook didn’t try to save both of them - didn’t try to stop yoongi from joining the military, from having his dreams of being someone who helped the world crushed as he was forced into being a human weapon - no, he followed. yoongi burned people alive with his hand chained and jungkook took up arms and followed right behind without a second glance. yoongi found himself burning in his own self loathing and jungkook asked him to burn his back to turn any evidence of what his father did into ashes. no more. no more.
and when jungkook is on the medical bed located in a tent in the middle of their makeshift camp - yoongi hears gunfire and grenades outside. the sound of men yelling, moving, dying. blood seeps the ground. even in here, there is a strange tinge of red. jungkook is unconscious and pale, but his breathing is even, and yoongi rests his head in his hands.
“please,” he rasps, “i can’t lose you.”
and jungkook - his eyes cracking open a little, looks over at yoongi and coughs. “thank you, sir,” like yoongi has done him a service. like yoongi is all that matters.
and yoongi - yoongi knows that if he’s making hell, at least jungkook is here to stop him from burning completely.
