Home Carer Safety In Cold Weather
Tumblr media
As we head into the colder months of the year, preparation is key to maintain home carer safety whilst travelling between clients. Follow our advice below to ensure you can get out and about safely, no matter how cold, wet or icy it is outside!
Dress Warmly – Wear Layers
Layer up! It’s much easier to take layers off and put them back on again when needed than it is to warm up without sufficient clothing! You will also be moving from inside warm houses and your car, out into the cold outdoors, so you may want to ensure you have a hat, scarf and gloves too. On this note, make sure to wear comfortable, sensible shoes that offer you good grip when walking over potentially icy outdoor areas.
Keep Your Mobile Charged
A fully charged mobile phone is a MUST at any time, but even more so when travelling in icy, possibly poor visibility weather conditions. A good idea is to invest in a car charger so that you always have the opportunity to give your phone charge a boost if you need to. Being able to contact help or your agency is imperative for home carer safety.
Pack in Supplies
Travel problems can occur at any time and place whilst on your care route, so we suggest carrying a snack and water supply in your vehicle as you never know how far away help could be (It is a good idea at any time of year to carry water with you on your route to ensure that you remain hydrated)
Even better, you could pack in a hot tea or coffee flask to keep yourself warm whilst on your route too! Just to be extra vigilant, you may want to carry a warm blanket and a torch in your car in case of any unforeseen breakdown emergencies!
Ensure Your Car is Serviced Up to Date
Even if your MOT is up to date, it’s worth ensuring your car has been serviced before cold weather really sits in – especially as this is a crucial element to your job. At the same time, have your tyre tread checked and tyres replaced if necessary to ensure you are able to travel as safely as possible in icy conditions.
Carry an Ice-Scraper or De-Icer Spray
Driving visibility is absolutely essential and before you set off on your first visit, and whilst travelling from client to client, you must ensure at all times that your windows are clear. Carrying an ice scraper or de-icer spray will save you precious time and ensure you are able to clear icy windows quickly without being late for your client visits.

Day Thirty Eight (82)
Hanging in Auckland, Epsom - Grey Lynn - Point Chevalier - Epsom, 18km Had a wee sleep in, and an incredibly chilled out morning. Kate and I watched music videos, I sent some emails and did internet things that weren’t possible on a mobile phone. Then I put some new tyres on the Big Dummy. This was pretty straightforward, and a relief. It also improved the handling. Some leftover pizza for morning tea, then we went for a walk to the Auckland Museum. We checked out the show Volume: Making Music in Aotearoa, and I really enjoyed it. Seeing some of the original scribblings of song lyrics was cool. My flatmate Bevan had done some of the exhibit’s audio production. We went and got some lunch, and had a relaxed afternoon. I jumped on my bike and headed to the Grey Lynn Community Centre. It was all go! Kirtan chanting and gospel singing in adjoining rooms - a well used space. And my little science show had about 20 people come along, including some family members and friends. It was a nice evening, and I cycled to Pt Chevalier, to my aunt and uncle’s house. It was great to have dinner with Dean, Deborah and Olivia, plus their neighbours who had attended the show also. A clear and warm evening was nice to cycle home with, and for the first time I turned on Google Maps’ step by step directions (“in 100m, turn left…”), and it was very helpful! Some ice and voltaren on my continually-problematic whacked shin, and then bed

So, this morning I was greeted with a big, fat, cuxnty nail in my tyre, rendering it pretty much flat. 😲😖😢 I was instantly fuming, shed a few morning tears and waved my love off in a cab instead of driving him to work. When I came back indoors, I was more annoyed that this could now alter the amazing day I had planned for myself. I thought "na.. not today satan", 😈🤫👿 made myself a tea and picked up the vibes like I was picking up daisies to make a daisy chain. I've been thinking of transferring some of my stories to my feed for a while, so I guess this is the showcase. This is how I will turn this mornings cruddy events into greatness. I took crap and reused it like manure on a rose bed. 🐂💩🌹 That's how I'm moving now.. I must remember this techinique. Feeling blessed to have the mindfulness to change negativity to positivity, just like man turned water to wine. 💦🍷🥂 TODAY IS MY TIME AND I'M GUNA GET IT DONE!!! Let me know what you think of my first proper lil video and if I should transfer this vibe to @caldesigns_ 🎬📺🤔 Maybe it's time for for me to try some IGTV?? Would you tune in? Let me know yo.. LET'S GET IT DONE! Have a blessed day, my peoples and I hope this brought you some good, loving vibes. Spread the word, share with your crew, tag your babes and dont forget to leave me a comment. Love yaa, Caldey ✌🏽💜👌🏽 (at Epsom) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxwr2Jun4eN/?igshid=idu8altv4ldu

Keep Cool On Your Home Care Shift
Tumblr media
The great British summer has finally arrived; and true to form there’s as many startlingly hot blue-skied sunny days as there are grey thunderstorms! The weather is as unpredictable as ever and with 2020 already shaping up to be a pretty wild year, who knows what it’ll bring next? For home carers in particular, erratic weather conditions can be difficult. Keeping cool on your home care shift is all about being prepared.
Self-Care on your Home Care Shift
Look at keeping cool and hydrated as necessary self-care – because it’s only at your healthiest that you are able to able to offer the best possible service and care to your clients. A happy, healthy home carer makes for a great one, and it’s important to put yourself first; plus, it’ll make your job easier – win-win!
The following tips will help home carers prepare for all eventualities and ensure that you’re comfortable, no matter the weather!
 Dress Accordingly
Many home carers have a uniform of sorts to wear, or at least a dress code. No doubt you’ll already be well versed in carrying a change of clothing between clients (everyone’s forgotten once and never made that mistake again!), but the key to dealing with unpredictable weather – layering! Carry some basic t-shirts or base layers which can be added in as necessary if things get cooler, as well as a hair tie or band to keep longer hair up and off your neck and shoulders in the heat.
If you’re wearing PPE, it’s not unreasonable to adapt your outfit to it, providing you still meet the necessary safety requirements. Non-steam visors and ear protectors for masks are available, so ask your care agency to supply them if you need them to.
Ensure your Vehicle is Well Serviced
Home carers frequently drive between jobs, but cars tend to get temperamental in changeable weather. Ensure that your car is always well topped up with oil and water. It is also advised to carry a spare tyre. You don’t want to be stuck on the side of the road in extreme summer heat!
 Carry Water
Always carry a couple of bottles of water with you – at least your two litres for the day! If you’re not the best at remembering to consume enough to stay hydrated, set an alarm on your phone or remind yourself to have a quick drink every time you finish a job. You don’t need to down gallons of water, but sipping throughout the day should keep you well enough topped up.
 Eat Well
No matter how busy the day, it’s imperative that carers eat well and have enough energy to deal properly with whatever care situations they encounter on shift. Make sure you have healthy (and delicious!) snack options in your car so that even if you’re not able to make it through a big meal for whatever reason, you can keep your energy and sugar levels where they should be.
It can be all too easy for carers to reach for crisps or chocolate bars when busy; simply out of convenience. This quickly becomes a habit though, so try and diversify away from these treats if you can.
 Take A Break
No matter how manic a home care shift gets or how much happens, you really must stop to take a break. Everyone in care has worked a day (or, OK, lots of days) when there’s only time for a few breaths on your own in the car between jobs, but even this is important. An exhausted, frazzled carer is not effective, so make sure that you’re able to present to every job as fresh-faced and motivated as you possibly can.
If taking a break becomes a ‘treat’, your shift needs to be better managed. Speak to your employer and work out how better your schedule can be managed – you need to put yourself first and ensure that you can deliver the brilliant level of care your clients deserve.
