With the 2021-22 Premier League campaign upon us, it's time to dive into the most exciting thing about the new season: the kits each club will be wearing for the next year.

After Euro 2020, the Copa America and the Olympic football tournaments have stolen the focus over the past couple of months, there's a chance you may have missed some of new uniforms unveiled ahead of the new season, which kicks off on Friday. We've seen jerseys inspired by past glories, 1960s modern art movements and even dabbles into psychedelia from a certain north London side.

Here we offer a comprehensive guide to the home, away and (where applicable) third alternate kits that all 20 Premier League clubs will be wearing throughout the 2021-22 season. We've compiled each and every one of them here and ranked each club by their collective output from worst to best. As more kits get released, they will be added to the list below and the ranking could change accordingly.

20. Burnley (Umbro)

Home: The very un-jazziest of all Premier League sides have added some very jazzy sleeve patterns to their tried-and-tested home kit formula, with unsettling results.

Away: The Clarets certainly made us wait for their away kit, unveiling it five days after the 2021-22 season had kicked off. Sky blue pinstripes run over a white base, trimmed in claret, and there's an old-fashioned feel to the jersey with its V-neck and oversized cuffs, but it wasn't really worth the wait.

Third: This is more like it. Not only is Burnley's third kit a study in cool navy, it is also a charitable endeavour with the club pledging to donate £5 from ever sale to the Alzheimer's Society -- a donation that will then in turn be matched by their shirt sponsor.

19. Brighton & Hove Albion (Nike)

Home: After toying with a daring pinstriped design last season, Brighton are back in their classic blue-and-white stripes once again, thus making their 2021-22 shirt almost indistinguishable from 99% of the club's previous home kits.

Away: The Seagulls' away shirt has more to offer with the aqua colouring similar to that seen on Brighton's Marine Parade, the city's main promenade along the seafront, and the rippled sleeve graphics also reminiscent of a walk by the beach. The lightning-shaped panels that run down either side of the jersey also help to conjure images of the typical weather conditions found on a day trip to the English coast.

18. Brentford (Umbro)

Home: Brentford are embarking upon their first season in the Premier League with a pair of kits that scream 'Premier League new boys.' Plain and basic, the Bees' red-and-white striped home shirt is the kind of generic template kit you might see on a local pub's Sunday League team.

Away: The away kit is 'buttercup yellow' with a subtle chevron pattern that Umbro says is intended to conjure images of a bee sting. It's a passable effort, but you'd be forgiven for wanting a little more from a club who are trailblazers for the modern data analytics approach in English football.

Third: Alas, the Bees' third kit is predictable fare too, with a largely plain white shirt added to the mix. It does at least include a nod to the club's historic roots via the 'claret, salmon, and blue' trim on the sleeve cuffs -- the colours first worn when the club was formed in 1889-90 - but they also used these colours as trim for their nigh-on identical white third kit last season.

17. Wolverhampton Wanderers (Castore)

Home: New kit suppliers Castore used colour matching to ensure they re-created the precise shade of 'Old Gold' that has become synonymous with Wolves over the years. Laser-cut breathing holes in 'high sweat zones' and angular side panels add subtle detailing to an otherwise simplistic design. They also went with a shiny matte finish, which makes the shirt look permanently sweaty.

Away: The gold specks against the dark background resemble the dying embers of a fire, which doesn't inspire much confidence in a team facing a pivotal third season back in the top flight under a new manager. Also, the pattern is reminiscent of the infamous 1992-93 'smudge' kit that we hoped had been consigned to history.

16. Leicester City (Adidas)

Home: Blotchy and blue, the Foxes have suffered a distinct downgrade from last season's regal gold-fringed home kit. The pattern makes this jersey look like it's made of the kind of fabric generally used to upholster seats on public transport.

Away: The Foxes have gone with mint green for their away kit, which the club rather optimistically claim is 'anticipated to be an instant classic.' There's a subtle checkerboard pattern integrated into the design, but there's not much to get your teeth into beyond that. 'Instantly forgettable' might be a little closer to the mark.

Third: The Foxes have slipped into a dusky grey number which falls a little flat despite the retina-searing pink used to accentuate the club crest and trim. As with the club's mint-tinged away kit, this third alternate falls neatly into the 'generic' category and is unlikely to be fondly remembered by anyone at the King Power beyond the end of next May.

15. Aston Villa (Kappa)

Home: Bound by convention, there's not much wiggle room with a claret-and-blue Villa home shirt in terms of design since they went with those colours in the 1880s, with the club favouring a claret body with blue sleeves without much in the way of deviation in the years since. This season some two-tone vertical stripes have been added into the mix, an ambiguous nod to 'past successes of the team,' according to the manufacturers. Other than that, it's all a bit humdrum.

Away: Heralding the 40th anniversary of Villa's European Cup triumph, the new away shirt mirrors the pinstriped white jersey worn against Bayern Munich for the 1981-82 final. The claret detailing gives the jersey a pleasant look but, sentimentality aside, the 2021-22 rehash is a little bland when judged on its own merits. Standard mid-table fare.

Third: A design inspired by the lion that adorns the Villa club crest, this deep blue number features a slash of faux claw marks across the front and back. So if you want to look like you've just managed a narrow escape from the big cat enclosure at your local zoo, this kit is for you.

14. Newcastle United (Castore)

Home: A new manufacturer's logo to the Premier League gives the 2021-22 Newcastle home shirt a vaguely exotic tinge, but it would probably look more at home on a rugby pitch. The mandarin collar is distinctive, but the general lack of stripes is a drawback and the slogan 'Better never stops' inside the hem is a bit of a head-scratcher, considering their perennial struggles at the wrong end of the table.

Away: For a team who famously play in black-and-white stripes at home, to release a black-and-grey striped away kit seems like folly. However, we can commend the level of detail put in to make Newcastle's 2021-22 alternate shirt visually engaging, with gold crest and sponsor logos and a slick 'wave' pattern disrupting the horizontal bands and playing tricks on the eye.

Third: This kit is hardly a blockbuster, but the Tron-style symmetrical grid pattern adds some depth and character to the baby blue base colour.

13. Watford (Kelme)

Home: Having played in a gruesome mess of black spikes last year, Watford are back in stripes for their return to the Premier League, continuing a proud club tradition of never being able to settle on any one design for more than a season. A slightly paler yellow and hazy 'gradient' hoops mean that the Hornets' latest effort is far more comfortable to look at for a sustained length of time than their previous jersey.

Away: Watford's away kit is a vivid red jersey with black-and-yellow trim, with the shirt also subtly marbled with a swirl pattern. It looks like something the Belgium national side might have worn in the late 1980s, and for that, it gets a solid thumbs-up from us.

Third: Watford have gone all-out to make a statement with this bottle green-and-gold kit, but the reality is that the overzealous zig-zag pattern renders the shirt a bit of an eyesore.

12. West Ham United (Umbro)

Home: No prizes for guessing that West Ham have gone with claret and blue once again, though the new sleeve panels and button collar lend a distinct 1990s feel. This is fully deliberate, as the Hammers' new home shirt is directly inspired by their 1999-2000 kit, as worn by Upton Park favourite Paolo Di Canio.

Away: Like a West Ham-themed deck chair, the away shirt is pale blue with white stripes, finished off with contrasting bands of claret trim. Again, the club have dug through time in search of inspiration, with the kit intended to evoke memories of the 1992-93 season in which Billy Bonds' side earned promotion into the Premier League.

Third: West Ham complete the line-up by shifting their palette around once again, this time choosing a navy marl third shirt decorated with claret-and-sky blue accents on the collar and cuffs. It's fine, if a little predictable.

11. Norwich City (Joma)

Home: Norwich have earned promotion again and have kicked off their latest spell in the top flight with a new kit deal with Joma. The Spanish manufacturer's first offering is a familiar yellow-and-green shirt, with the feathery pattern on the sleeves designed to look like the wings of a canary -- the bird on the club's crest from which they take their nickname. The collar is embroidered with the club's six core values (growth, integrity, belonging, resilience, pride and commitment), and the presence of Norfolk-based sports car company Lotus as a main sponsor is a welcome addition.

Away: The feathery sleeve pattern is also in place on the away kit, with a deep black and neon turquoise colour scheme giving it a bioluminescent quality. It's moody and nocturnal. We dig it.

Third: The Canaries' third kit is altogether less subtle. In fact, it is fluorescent coral from head to toe with black detailing, including the V-neck and the central stripe. As with the away strip, the third is so powerfully vivid that it nearly functions as its own light source.

10. Southampton (Hummel)

Home: Billed as a 'kit like no other,' the major selling point of Saints' home shirt is that it incorporates augmented reality (AR) technology that allows fans to access a variety of interactive content when they scan it. This rather glosses over the fact that the shirt itself is actually fairly nondescript, even with Hummel's trademark chevrons in the background.

Away: Like many football shirts these days, this one is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. The Saints emphasised the eco-friendliness of their new away kit by launching it at an event where supporters gathered to clean a beach just a few miles from their St Mary's stadium. The yellow-and-blue jersey bears a tribute to the stadium, as well as the club's former home at The Dell, by including structural details of the two grounds on the inside.

Third: Super smart in black-and-red, the Saints' third shirt also pays homage to the club's stomping grounds by including the same renderings of St Mary's and The Dell, only this time in subtle patterns on the outside of the jersey. Impeccable timing, too: the shirt debuts as the club celebrate the 20-year anniversary of uprooting and moving into their 'new' stadium in 2001.

9. Leeds United (Adidas)

Home: Fresh as a daisy, the new Leeds home shirt is pristine white with the blue-and-gold trim of 2020-21 replaced with fresh navy and yellow accents. The button-up, collarless look is also a nice touch, with Marcelo Bielsa's side certain to look immaculate as they embark upon their second season back in the top flight.

Away: Leeds will play in blue camo on their travels, which Adidas says is intended as an homage to the club's 'amazing' away following. In all honesty, it looks more like an homage to Leicester City's 2021-22 home shirt, made by the same manufacturer, although the colour will be agreeable to more fans than the Foxes' mint-green version.

Third: Third kit designs tends to afford a little extra creative license which has seen Leeds introduce a brand new colour to their palette. It's kind of hazy heather, kind of luscious lavender, and definitely wouldn't look out of place adorning the walls of the bathroom at your grandmother's house.

8. Chelsea (Nike)

Home: Nike says that this kit is inspired by London in the 1960s, specifically the Op-art movement that came to the fore during that time wherein artists created stark abstract and geometric patterns intended to fool the eye. It's hardly a timeless design -- indeed, we have a feeling it's not going to age particularly well -- but you have to commend them for trying something different.

Away: Yellow is the colour for Chelsea on the road once again, with the club returning to an alternate hue favoured since the early 1960s. The horizontal pinstripes also echo several historic Blues away shirts worn during the 1980s and early '90s.

Third: Inspired by the London streetwear scene, Chelsea's third kit features a green and black splotch print accented with crimson trim, all designed to shine under the floodlights on European nights. It's undeniably chic and modern, though you could argue that the last thing the Blues needed to add to their already lively 2021-22 kit collection was another chaotic, abstract design.

7. Manchester City (Puma)

Home: City emerged top of our style ranking in 2020-21 with their jerseys of mosaic, paisley and copper trim. However, this summer's kit release is not enough for Guardiola's side to defend their title. It looks like the nostalgia well might be running dry at the Etihad with City's latest home jersey at least part-inspired by Sergio Aguero's famous title-winning goal against Queens Park Rangers -- which was less than a decade ago. The time stamp (93:20) of Aguero's stoppage-time strike on the final day of the 2011-12 season has pride of place in the back of the neck, while the main design is reminiscent of the shirts that City wore that day.

Away: City's away kit is an ecological endeavour, made from 100% recycled plastic while using a special dying process that drastically reduces water usage during its manufacture. This was a decision made by City to highlight water concerns around the world, with the club collaborating with charitable partners to provide clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene to deprived communities in four cities across three continents. They also knocked out a very smart kit in the process, with the iridescent lettering and logos are an exquisite touch.

Third: This jersey was released as part of Puma's recent mass 2021-22 third kit dump, which has proven very unpopular. Critics have likened the design to lacklustre training wear, with crests removed from chests and replaced with large bands of clunky text. Any City goal scorers seeking to kiss the badge in celebration will have a struggle on their hands, given that it's been relocated to the back of the jersey.

6. Crystal Palace (Puma)

Home: Palace unveiled their new home kit with a little help from possibly their only fan old enough to remember the year (1937) the club first switched to red-and-blue stripes. At 101 years old, Pam Blomfield (known affectionately as 'Nan Pam') was the unlikely face of the launch after her grandson contacted the club on social media asking to get a shirt for her landmark birthday. The shirt itself sees the Eagles' famous stripes tilted diagonally for the first time, echoing the two-tone sash worn on their white home kits of the 1970s.

Away: A staple for the club's away kits since the 1960s, Palace will be back in yellow on the road this season having chopped and changed between black and white away shirts over the past few years. A return to yellow is likely to prove popular with fans of the Eagles. Speaking of which, there is a large eagle detail sunk into the background of this jersey, while the red-and-blue stripes running vertically down the front to house the club crest are another nice touch.

Third: Sky blue and white aren't colours you'd immediately associate with Palace, but the club have gone back 160 years and untangled their earliest roots in search of creative inspiration. The half-and-half shirt is inspired by the uniform worn in 1861 when Crystal Palace cricket club formed a football team to keep playing sport during the winter months. The shirt is speckled in references to the Eagles' nascent years, including an image of the famous Crystal Palace building -- originally constructed for the Great Exhibition of 1851 -- which has been merged into the design.

5. Everton (Hummel)

Home: Hummel says its design is inspired by the ingenious 'dazzle' camouflage used to shroud ships in the Liverpool docks and beyond during the First World War. It worked by using angular lines and confusing colours to make it difficult for enemies to determine both the size and orientation of boats while at sea. Should the Toffees' new kit prove as effective, opposing defenders will no doubt have similar problems judging precisely which way Richarlison is facing while he charges around the Goodison pitch.

Away: A black kit furnished with a bright burnt orange sash, the new Everton away kit is a tribute to the team of 1881-82, a side that came to be nicknamed 'The Black Watch.' That team had a formidable record but, due to a lack of formal league structure, most of their games were classified as non-competitive friendlies, barring two outings in the Lancashire Senior Cup. Still, their kit looked amazing.

Third: Inspired by the Toffees' white away kits of the 1950s, this modern interpretation features a central track of navy and yellow chevrons -- another innovative use of Hummel's trademark logo, even if it does make the shirt look like it's been run over by a motorbike.

4. Tottenham Hotspur (Nike)

Home: There's going 'back to basics' and then there's this: the whitest shirt and naviest shorts and socks you'll see this season. Some will find this design utterly boring, but when you're a club with such a distinctive combination of colours then you have the luxury of reverting to the classic look. Still, most Spurs fans will be more concerned about star striker Harry Kane's attempts to force an exit late in the transfer window than how much effort has gone into designing their kit.

Away: As if to compensate for their ultra-simplistic home kit, Spurs went all out with the away shirt. In as stark a contrast between a club's kits of the same season as you're likely to find, the second jersey is a chaotically cosmic trip through a mind-bending neon galaxy. The swirling dreamscape has split opinion among Spurs fans right down the middle but, hand on heart, we love it.

Third: Spurs risked going one wild kit too far with their lurid purple third jersey with its angular chevrons, chaotic collages, patchy patterns and washed out colours. It was designed in collaboration with local artists as a showcase for the young creative talent emerging in North London.

3. Manchester United (Adidas)

Home: The United home shirt is designed to conjure images of club legends like Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law in their pomp. Inspired by the club's classic red home kits of the 1960s with white round collar and cuffs, the plain design is another intended to prompt swells of nostalgia. The past will be something of a refuge for United fans who are having to deal with the club's current four-year trophy drought.

Away: United have also gone retro for their new away kit, specifically the cult classic 'snowflake' shirt of 1990-92. Just like they did for their 2017-18 away shirt, the old tessellating trefoil pattern has been updated to create a modern take on a fan favourite. Jadon Sancho certainly seems to enjoy being back in pale blue, so who are we to argue?

Third: United's new third kit was introduced as a 'remix' of the sleek black away kit worn by Eric Cantona & Co. during their historic double-winning 1993-94 campaign. The contemporary revamp chops and changes the palette around with a deep blue base, even darker angular patterning and a high-contrast yellow trim. Looking at both shirts side by side, the correlation isn't immediately apparent -- and it seems a little daft that both of United's alternative outfield kits for 2021-22 are predominantly blue -- but it's still a perfectly nice strip, all things considered.

2. Liverpool (Nike)

Home: Liverpool have sent a shock wave through their traditional home red this season, intensifying the colour in what Nike calls a testament to former manager Bill Shankly's belief that it made his team play with added vigour. In 1964-65, Shankly introduced an entirely red kit -- shirt, shorts and socks -- at Anfield for the first time, citing the psychological advantages of harnessing the 'danger and power' associated with the colour. Sure enough, they went on to win the FA Cup that season. Jurgen Klopp's side will no doubt be looking to reclaim their Premier League dominance by channelling that energy.

Away: Liverpool's away kit sees a welcome return for the colour off-white shade 'ecru,' although here they have dubbed it 'stone,' inspired by the buildings that dominate the city's skyline. Ecru became synonymous with Liverpool during the 1990s thanks largely to the infamous Armani suits the team wore ahead of the 1995-96 FA Cup final, and the off-beige away strip they wore for the following season, which has since attained 'cult classic' status among fans. The contemporary 2021-22 rendering is altogether easier on the eye, with a green-and-red trim bringing the whole thing together nicely.

Third: With trim inspired by the chequered flags that first appeared on the Anfield terraces in the 1970s, this kit is a loving tribute to one of football's most famous stands: The Kop. Drenched in vibrant yellow with subtle pinstriping, the shirt harks back to the club's last great flush of success during the 1980s, when the colour became a staple of the Reds' repertoire. Unashamedly retro and steeped in nostalgia, you either love it or you don't -- and we do (even if some see it as too close to the uniform of a fast food outlet for their liking).

1. Arsenal (Adidas)

Home: Arsenal have followed up last season's art deco-themed kit by reverting to a clean, modern reworking of their iconic club colours. A vivid red base, white sleeves and flanks are set off by a navy blue trim. It's undoubtedly smart and uncluttered, though there are distinct shades of Ajax about it -- which is never a bad thing in our book.

Away: Arsenal will be wearing 'pearl citrine' (yellow) and 'collegiate navy' (dark blue) on the road with an effortlessly stylish shirt that also sees the club's old and much-loved cannon crest make a long-awaited return. The kit also marks the 50th anniversary of the club's first-ever double-winning season, when Charlie George & Co. wore yellow as they beat Liverpool in the 1971 FA Cup final at Wembley.

Third: Continuing the retro theme, Arsenal have resurrected their cult classic 'blue lightning' away kit from 1995-96. Breathing new life into a fan favourite, the 2021-22 rework sees the bolt graphic spread right across the shirt, with two shades of blue and a contrasting scarlet outline combining to create a pattern that feels brand new and yet familiar at the same time. Incidentally, the original lightning kit was worn during the last season the Gunners weren't involved in European competition -- until 2021-22, that is.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Stroll through the Daytona infield and fans can grab a seat next to President Donald Trump and get a sweet taste of impeachment.

Debi Ringhaver is mixing cocktails for curious NASCAR fans who stop in their tracks at the sight of her lifesize mannequin of Trump, chilling on a lawn chair, holding a book titled “The Truth Behind Trump” and wearing a red “Donald Trump 2020″ baseball cap.

Hundreds have stopped by her RV this week for a selfie or a chat or a sip of “The Impeachment,” a blend of peach vodka, champagne and peach nectar. The “Subpoena Colada” also is in the blender, but Ringhaver concedes “it’s just a pina colada with a better name.”

Ringhaver placed a book in Trump’s grip because so many of her friends sat on his lap when she kept him at her Florida home, they broke his hands.

“They get real enthusiastic,” she said, laughing. “They get kind of excited about having Donald at the ranch.”

NASCAR fans are ecstatic about the real deal crashing the Daytona 500 this weekend.

When Trump arrives Sunday at Daytona International Speedway to deliver the command for drivers to start their engines, the race’s grand marshal might as well be at one of his campaign rallies. High above banners flying for NASCAR stars like Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson, Trump flags wave atop row after row of flashy RVs.

NASCAR, which has a complicated relationship with politics and social issues, doesn’t dare sell the kind of merchandise the president’s loyalists wear to the track. One guy standing in a food line wore a T-shirt with Trump’s image superimposed over a “Sons of Anarchy” homage, tattooed arms folded and smiling as part of the 2020 MAGA Chapter. Two others in a golf cart stopped in front of a makeshift bar in Trump/Pence shirts, getting shoutouts from fellow revelers.

Matt Mansfield, lounging in the infield in nothing but a pair of athletic shorts and camouflage Crocs, was pumped for the president.

Fan after fan asked about Trump’s presence were thrilled he was attending the race. Kristi Bodnaruk, who has attended every Daytona 500 since 2005, was one of the few dissenters in the infield.

NASCAR canceled its season-ending awards ceremony scheduled for Trump’s Doral property in South Florida.

Months later, France recruited several drivers to attend a Georgia rally for the candidate. France, Chase Elliott and Hall of Famers Mark Martin and Bill Elliott spoke from the stage in support of Trump as they flanked the candidate.

France later that week penned an email to the entire NASCAR organization saying his endorsement was personal and he was not speaking on behalf of NASCAR.

Two Cup Series champions, Martin Truex Jr. and Joey Logano, have been honored at the White House. Kyle Busch, the reigning series champion who visited the White House and President Barack Obama following his 2015 title, said he would go again if invited by Trump. Logano said it was “amazing” Trump was attending “The Great American Race.”

“The leader of our country is coming to the Daytona 500. How cool is that?” Logano said. “That kind of solidifies what our sport is. It’s a huge event. We’re a big sport, and to be able to have the president come here, that’s something we all should be proud of. Whether you support him or not, it doesn’t matter. It shows the unity in our sport and how big our sport really is.”

Had Trump toured the track this weekend, he might have spotted one driver in NASCAR’s second-tier series in a Trump/Pence 2020 paint scheme: Joe Nemechek’s Chevrolet was sponsored by The Patriots PAC of America.

The Daytona 500 is a sellout for the fifth consecutive year, the booze, the flyovers, the celebrities, the flutter of the flags all part of the pageantry for more than 100,000 fans at the kickoff of NASCAR’s season.

Daytona fans were more absorbed with hitting the next party than debating politics as the race approached. The tailgating feast at one stop was fit for a president who served fast food at the White House to college football champions: deep fried honey buns and deep fried Oreos were on the dessert menu -- or maybe it was dinner? -- and cheap domestic beers easily slipped into NASCAR koozies.

Trump’s supporters have hunkered down at Daytona, comforted by the fact that while their favorite drivers may be different, their love for the president is a deep tie that binds.

“We’re a different group of people,” said Georgia native Scott Gregory, attending his fifth straight Daytona 500. “When you walk around and talk to all these folks, we’re all pretty much of the same mind of what we think of the U.S., leadership, our president, and we’re all pretty much in line as far as that thinking. I don’t think it’s true of other sporting events.”

Researchers at the Cornell Alliance for Science have found that articles that mention President Donald Trump in the context of COVID-19 misinformation make up the “largest single component of the infodemic.”

“Infodemic” is a term used to refer to the rapid spread of inaccurate information related to the coronavirus.

The study analyzed 38 million articles published by English-language traditional media and online news services between Jan. 1 and May 26 to identify the most prominent topics of COVID-19 related misinformation.

The study, published Oct. 1, was in the peer-review process when the authors decided that the information needed to be made public immediately.

The 11 sub-topics of misinformation targeted by the study comprise of widely-publicized unsubstantiated claims, such as unproven cures to COVID-19 and conspiracy theories — claims which the report stated have been “amplified” by widespread coverage of “prominent persons whose views and comments are considered newsworthy.”

The study found that approximately 1.1 million of the news articles analyzed had some relationship with misinformation related to the pandemic. About 16 percent of those articles were fact-checking misinformation itself.

Conspiracy theories, such as the one that emerged at the beginning of the pandemic purporting that the COVID-19 outbreak could be traced to consumption of bat soup in Wuhan, China, made up almost half of the misinformation found.

However, while most conspiracy theories and other false claims tended to rise in popularity and fall rapidly — the topic of “miracle cures” comprised the bulk of the misinformation coverage.

Miracle cures included claims that UV light, disinfectant and hydroxychloroquine could potentially cure COVID-19.

“One of the surprising findings of the study was that the president’s name was associated with much of that miracle cure misinformation.” said Sarah Evanega, the director of the Cornell Alliance for Science and the lead author of the study.

The study found that the coverage of miracle cures had three separate prominent peaks from March to May of this year.

The first occurred in March, when Trump began to advocate for the use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine as COVID-19 treatments, even though there was no peer-reviewed clinical data proving that the drug would be effective.

However, the largest spike in misinformation coverage was on April 24 — at nearly 18,000 articles — when Trump suggested that injecting bleach or other disinfectants into oneself could potentially cure COVID-19 infections.

According to the researchers, this spike dwarfs the reaction caused by all other incidents of misinformation throughout the analyzed time period.

Further, the data collected suggests that the sub-topic of “miracle cures” accounts for more misinformation coverage than the other 10 combined, making it the second-largest contributor to the misinformation conversation after Trump himself.

Trump mentions comprised 37.9 percent of the overall infodemic, while “miracle cures” comprised 26.4 percent.

Going forward, Evanega believes that as a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, journalists and consumers need to be very careful about preventing a second infodemic, especially in light of the active anti-vaccine movement.

“Journalists have to do their part to focus on reputable science sources for information and to amplify the recommendations, the data and the science from bonafide experts, and to not give too much airtime to the information that’s coming from non-experts,” said Evanega, adding that consumers had to be mindful of the information they spread on social media, as well.

Unlikely Chapter 12

“You know what my favorite thing about your face is?” Random thoughts from Zoe. Niall turned his eyes from the football match on the TV (against my own will, he had turned me into a Derby Rams fan). It was late on a Saturday night. Willie and Hannah were out of town and Deo had been relocated for the weekend. We hadn’t seen much of one another over the last week - he was finishing things for his upcoming charity golf tournament and gala, and sliding into the studio to write as often as he could. He claimed he'd had a stroke of inspiration lately and wanted to get back to making music. I was busy finishing up work on a big research project with a few other therapists, and hadn’t been home before 9:00 anytime recently. As of next week, his schedule was the most insane thing I’ve ever seen for an unemployed musician (as I liked to remind him): golf tournaments, fundraisers, charity games, concerts and festivals, and an extended trip to the U.S. to write and record more. Therefore, we had sequestered ourselves in his house and were having a grownup sleepover. Last night I’d insisted we make a fort out of cushions to eat pizza in - once I’d convinced him it was an amazing idea, he’d gone in with full gusto, choosing blankets that were sturdy. He fancied himself a fort engineer by the end, and was a little pissed when we knocked it down after the dinner during more active pursuits that resulted in an impressive patch of rug burn on my back. We took a long bath, with bubbles that I’d smuggled in, and I’d dozed off with my back resting on his chest, at ease with pretty much everything. He turned on some late 90s dance music this afternoon and we danced around like idiots, then tried (unsuccessfully) doing the tango (I have two left feet). I was trying to convince him to let me braid his hair, but he wasn’t there yet. It’d been the best 30 hours ever, and I was kind of buzzed off my love of him. Well, and the bottle of wine I’d been sipping on.

“What’s that, baby?” He took a long drink of his beer and I watched him swallow, enthralled. “Z?”

“Huh?”

He started laughing. “You have the attention span of a mouse. What’s your favorite thing about my face?”

“Oh yeah!” I was sitting on his left side on the ginormous sectional sofa in his living room, my feet across his lap. I scooted my butt closer until I was almost sitting on him, and turned his chin so he was facing forward and I had a perfect profile shot. “This. This is my favorite.”

“You’re poking my cheek!”

“No! I’m poking your eye dimple. It’s the cutest thing ever.”

“I don’t even know what you’re talking about - don’t have a dimple on my eye.”

“Right under, not ON your eye.” I rolled my eyes for emphasis. “Here.” I grabbed my phone from behind me and pulled up a picture of him I’d taken that morning. He was sitting on his countertop in his tightie whities, laughing at my impressions of various Food Network chefs while I made French toast. He looked so utterly perfect, laughing so hard he ended up getting the hiccups when I discussed Wonder Bread and Egg Beaters as Sandra Lee, his hair falling over his brow and fingers grasping the overhang of the counter. Who knew the members of One Direction loved cooking shows? I’d promptly walked over the kissed the living hell out of him after I snapped the pic. Such opportunities could not be wasted. “See? It’s a little dimple and it only shows when you’re genuinely smiling. Everytime I see it I want to buy a house and retire there because it’s the most perfect place on Earth.” Okay, maybe I’d had closer to a bottle and a half of wine. He looked at me with wide, adoring eyes, and caught my lips with his own.

“Know what my favorite part of your face is?”

“I’m guessing my lips because, blah blah, sucking you off,” I gave him a cheeky grin, expecting the usual male answer.

“You underestimate me, Zoe,” he replied, wrinkling his forehead and pushing his pretty lips out into a tiny pout. He actually looked a little hurt.

“I’m sorry, boo.” I traced his chin dimple with my thumb, pacifying him. “What’s your favorite part?”

He kissed my brow bone. “This. Can tell everythin’ you’re thinkin’ by your forehead and brows. You can’t hide a thing. Explains why you can’t play poker for shit.”

“I’m not THAT bad.”

“Babe, Nick took forty quid off you in one hand.”

“He cheats.”

“Sure he does.” He’d pulled me back against the cushions with him and I cuddled up to his side. “Love you. Bad poker face and all. Best thing that ever happened to me.”

I felt my emotions bubble up as they always did when he said something like this. “Love you more.”

“Impossible.”

“So possible.”

“Nope.”

“Shut up, shamrock.” In order to ensure his silence, I climbed over his lap and kissed him stupid. He upped the ante by slipping my t-shirt over my head, and I won by pushing his shorts down and sliding down on his cock.

His stylist, Ellie, and her favorite tailor showed up Sunday early afternoon to fit Niall for his fundraiser suit one last time. He was leaving soon for a golf tournament in Northern Ireland so all final preps needed to be now. I adored Ellie-she’d helped me find a dress (not even a dress, a fabulous creation of nature that was the most perfect item of clothing I’d ever had on my body) for the upcoming Horan Rose event. And to Niall’s chagrin, I’d paid for it myself despite his requests otherwise and whines to the stylist. “I know, but 90% of your wardrobe is black! And it’s light pink at that!”

“Because pastels make me look dead. But this looks good.” I showed her the next pic in the roll of me modeling for Ellie.

Hannah sat back, obviously proud of herself, “Love looks good on you, Zoe Jane.”

I threw a shoe at her, intentionally missing. She wasn’t wrong.

I laid on the bed while Niall pranced around in his underwear. His good mood was infectious, and Sam the tailor was having none of it. The older gentleman who had twice whacked him on the back of the thigh for screwing around. He’d earned my adoration quickly.

“Zoe, will you look at these ties?” Ellie had plopped down next to me, holding up a large box. “I can’t decide which one.”

“Lord, she’ll put me in a bow tie, don’t let her choose, El!” I stuck my tongue out at Niall as I sorted. Damnit. He was right. I loved bow ties. They looked dapper.

“How about this one?” I held up a navy one for Ellie’s inspection.

“The peaches? You think?”

“Yup. In honor of his little peach bum.” He shook said bum at us, earning another smack from Sam. Too cute for words.

I was nervous about the fundraiser. Besides it being my first official event as Niall’s date, I was also going to meet the whole Horan clan - he was flying a boatload of people over from Ireland for the party. In negotiations with him and Kim, I’d gotten out arriving with him and doing the red carpet thing (the mere idea gave me hives). He wasn’t aware that I wasn’t going to be “arriving” at all - at my request, Kim was going to arrange for me to come in the back door of the facility. I knew I’d be photographed at some point or another, but I wanted to avoid it as much as possible. I agreed that I’d sit at his table and be on his arm instead of eating with Willie and Hannah nearby or my boss and his wife in the back of the room. He knew I was terrified of the attention, and tried to talk me down as much as possible.

“I know it’s a lot, babe.” We were FaceTiming as he got ready to head off to a rugby match with Rory.

“No, it’s fine. I just don’t want people paying attention to something that isn’t a the reason for the night,” I tried to explain. I started playing with my bracelet, twirling it around my fingers.

“Put the bracelet down, ya liar.”

“What?”

“Get on me about my nervous hands, and ya do the same damn thing.” He pulled his shirt over his head. “Kate is next to Justin, so why wouldn’t ya be with me?”

“Um, because she’s his wife.”

“Is that all it takes then? Ok? Wanna get married? Let’s go.” Wha? I knew my mouth was gaping.

“No! I mean...no, shut up.”

He knew he had me and smirked. “Just gotta say the word.”

I rolled my eyes. “They’ve known one another more than three months. They weren’t outed on the The Daily News and Sun out partying. Twice. The fangirls of the world don’t hate Kate. I don’t want to cause problems for you.”

“Z, are ya ever gonna realize that I don’t give a fuck? Yeah, I try to keep as much of me life private as I can, but I’m not going to hide ya. Ever. And I’ll protect you.” By this point he was pointing his finger at his laptop in a rant.

“God you’re a pain in the ass.”

“Likewise, pretty girl. I gotta go, car is here. Love you.”

Niall got home late Thursday night, and the Irish contingent starting arriving by the planeload Friday afternoon. I’d stayed late at work to get ahead since I’d be off Monday and Tuesday for the golf tournament and the inevitable aftermath-I’d been training my liver for this weekend since I was sixteen. After work I’d planned on going home, leaving Niall to his own devices with his guests. But in true Niall fashion he had his dad text me that he expected to see me when he landed. The little bastard had pulled out the Bobby Horan card. When I finally left, a black Range Rover beeped at me from the curb and Basil waved. I let out a sigh and muttered to myself. “So much for taking the tube like a normal goddamn human being.”

“What are you doing here?”

“Picking you up, obviously.”

“He really doesn’t know how to take no for answer, does he?” I buckled into the passenger seat as Bas tossed my bag in the back.

I wasn’t one hundred percent on board with this uncomfortable hour drive and silently shook my fist at my boyfriend. I was still trying to figure out where I stood with Bas. While I was sure he didn’t hate me, my relationship with Niall and what it meant for his security (and heart) were still unknown. We both routinely got some nastygrams, and lately he’d been getting his phone hacked on the regular and spammed by little shits. I was anxious and had skipped lunch today because my stomach was going nuts with nerves. I was facing an entire long weekend filled with people who loved Niall and were going to be watching me. I didn’t work well under pressure. So I filled the car with awkward conversation until Bas’s eyes basically begged me to shut up. Rightfully silently chastised, I leaned my seat back and closed my eyes until we arrived home (shit, did I just refer to Niall’s house as home?). I didn’t even get my buckle undone when the door was opened.

“Ni, Jes-,” Oh. This was not my blonde bombshell. The older man with rosy cheeks beamed at me.

“Zoe! Aw, love, it’s a pleasure!” The legend himself, Bobby Horan, pulled me out of the car and into a gigantic bear hug. Unlike when I met Harry, however, I didn’t mind. I may have squealed a little bit.

“Back off, old man!” Niall elbowed his dad. “I haven’t seen my girl all week.”

“Whose fault is that, youngster?” Bobby gave me a grin, and I squeezed him again.

My quick confidence shot from Bobby quickly diminished when I walked into a house full of strangers. I knew it was coming but still was not prepared. Before I could blink, I’d met Eoghan, Bressie (hello...I was never going to be able to make eye contact with him), Bobby’s girlfriend Aoife, another Niall, and various other guys whose names I was going to spend the whole weekend trying to remember. I was passed from person to person - the Irish were huggers. Sensing my discomfort, Deo slid a Jameson in my hand. I mouthed a thank you to him and downed it only to have it replaced by a beer. After being appropriately introduced, I excused myself to go to the bedroom and change. And have a minor panic attack in the bathroom.

“Babe?” Shit, I’d been gone for almost half an hour.

“In here.”

“Decent?”

“Totally depends on your definition. But no, I’m not pooping.”

His head poked through the door, giving me a look. “Hiding, huh?”

It was useless, he’d figured out my M.O. “There are just so many of them. And they all love you. If you haven’t noticed, I tend to make an ass out of myself when I’m nervous.”

“I know. Still waiting for those strokes you promised me.”

The Irish could party, let the record reflect. Aoife, Hannah, and I ventured out late Sunday morning for manicures and to get last minute supplies, including buy a new tie for Eoghan, who had insisted his could double as a headband the night before, requiring me to cut him out of it. None of Niall’s ties matched the intricate pattern of his suit, he claimed (Niall was positive he just wanted me to feel the fabric) and I’d been tasked. Once I’d gotten over my initial shyness, I realized why every one of these people were special to Ni. It made me feel even closer to him, and pondered introducing him to my family eventually (then promptly took a shot to chase that crazy idea away). The only stone left unturned was Maura. She and her husband were meeting us at the event. Willie and Deo privately had told me that she’d guilted Niall into the invitation - something she routinely did when there was something she was interested in. In the time we’d known one another I had never witnessed her interacting with him in any way. I had developed an attitude about her, and he was aware of it. I didn’t know Niall as a small child, but the idea of willingly leaving him was foreign to me. I didn’t know her side of the story, it was true. But even how she treated him now pissed me off. Plus, I’d bore witness to the affects of her abandonment, and that made me pull out my momma bear tendencies.

Over the last two months I’d observed Niall pour over details with planners and Justin, his co-host. He’d really put his heart and soul into it, and I was full of pride. So proud that I’d risked my perfect hairdo (okay, so it was Hannah and her masterful use of a flat iron and bobby pins) to give him a blowjob in the closet before he’d left. The ballroom at the private golf club was madness. Ellie and I had ridden from the house together, and were both bouncing with excitement. Swanky events weren’t my thing, but I knew the night promised to be amazing. We had shuffled in through the kitchen, and observed Jamie Freakin’ Oliver yelling out directions. El didn’t give me time to adequately fan girl. Probably for the best. I’m sure I would have ended up stealing a carrot. We spotted Bressie and Eoghan and huddled with them. My inner matchmaker decided that Ellie and the single Bressie would be adorable, and I made a mental note to mention that to Niall later. He was still working the green carpet, and would be for a while. I’d spied him outside of the ballroom doors and felt giddy inside - he looked amazing (god, Ellie was good at her job) and in his element.

We sipped Horan Shamrock Spritz cocktails and the obvious jokes about Niall being in our mouths were shared. I privately gloated knowing he was more than just in my mouth. Eoghan eventually made a face, “Of course she’d show up to this - rich and famous folks.” We all turned in unison and Bres groaned. I recognized the tiny (seriously, I’m short - I would tower over her) woman as Maura. Not wanting to be obvious and being a huge fan of avoidance, I excused myself to go to the charity section and spend some time mingling and discussing the clinic with guests, most of whom had no idea that I was anything other than a practitioner attending the event. My feet ached by the time dinner was announced, the royal blue shoes that matched some of the gem detail on the top of my cocktail dress not being designed for long term wear. I mentally patted myself on the back for tossing a pair of flip flops into my bag.

“Excuse me, excuse me,” a familiar Irish voice interrupted my conversation with an older couple about vaccines (for the nine millionth time in my career). Niall put his arm around my waist, “I need to steal this one to meet a few people. Have you all seen the silent auction tables? We’ve got some great prizes. Glenn,” he patted the man’s elbow, “there’s a package to play with Rors this fall. It’s got your name written all over it.” Like that he slid me a way.

“I owe you. So hard.”

“Your eyes were screamin’. I know when my girl needs help.” He kissed my cheek as we navigated the crowd, being stopped by every other person for Niall to chat. “You smell fuckin’ amazin’.” We raised our eyebrows at one another.

We were interrupted by a high pitched, loud voice, “There’s my baby boy!” I knew I couldn’t avoid her all night.

“Mam, I was lookin’ for ya. Wanted to introduce you to Zoe, my girlfriend. Zo, this is my mam, Maura, and step dad, Chris.” I could see Maura eyeing me up and down, and I felt everything from my hair to my toes being judged. I slapped on a huge smile and reminded myself that he loved her despite the shenanigans she’d caused, so I owed it to him to try.

I extended my hand, “It’s lovely to finally meet you.”

“You, too, dear. I didn’t know you had a young lady, Niall.”

He cleared his throat. “Yeah, for a couple of months.” The tension was thick and I was uncomfortable.

“Did the two of you have a nice trip?” It was lame, but it was something. We stood and talked awkwardly (Niall had his arms crossed over his chest with his hands tucked, a sure sign he was uncomfortable) until dinner was announced. We were all at the same table, but luckily were joined by Bobby and Aoife as well, and Deo and Martin. Willie, Hannah, Eoghan, Bressie, and other friends were behind us, and at the next table were Justin and Kate (whom I had grown to quickly adore) and their family members. There were plenty of people to chat with so I could avoid direct conversation with Maura, who, to be fair, didn’t seem all that interested in talking to me. Luckily, the wine was flowing.

Shortly after dessert was served, some big shot came over and Niall introduced us all. As they left to start the speeches, the gentleman complimented Bobby and Maura on raising such a fine young man. Having sat back and watched her bask in Niall’s glory all night (and watching his jaw tense and him clench his fist when she did), including claiming him auditioning for XFactor was her idea (it wasn’t, and any fan with internet access knew that) and how she always knew he’d be special, my irritation grew, I couldn’t control myself. The cat was out to play.

“Yes, Bobby, he’s right,” I reached over and grabbed “the father-in-law” (as he’d dubbed himself the night before)’s hand, giving it a squeeze. “You really did a fabulous job with that one. Thank you.” I knew Maura caught what I’d done, and frankly I didn’t care. She glared at me and I gave her the eye right back. Deo watched us in amusement.

“Zoe, would you like to go to the powder room with me?” She was throwing down a challenge, and emboldened by liquid courage, I took it.

“Certainly.” Aoife looked at me with wide eyes, and stood to come along. I waved my hand at her, and she grabbed it. She had my back.

“Aoife, I think this needs to be a talk between Niall’s mother and his fling,” Maura said, giving her a withering look. Oh fuck no. Those were fighting words. I pushed my chair in with a little more force than I’d intended, and the table shook. She might be little, but I had rage and a little country in me. I would take her on for insulting me, her ex-husband’s girlfriend, and abandoning her sons. With pleasure.

“Well, let’s go have this talk, shall we?” I turned on my heel and walked off to the private toilets, not looking back to see if she’d follow me. I knew she would. And I knew whatever I said would be turned around to make her the victim. We all knew women like her. I leaned against the toilet wall and waited.

“Listen, missy,” she’d barely cleared the door. Normally I hated confrontation, but this was different. This was standing up for Niall. “I don’t know who you think you are, but I am his mother and you will not undermine me. I am just as responsible for his success as his father!” She was feisty, I’ll give her that. “You don’t know anything about me and how dare you embarrass me in front of these people. You’re just a slag using him for his money and connections.” I just let her rant. Also, project much?

My voice was much more calm than I’d anticipated. “You’re right, Maura, I don’t know you. I don’t know what you went through when you abandoned your sons, but I’ve seen first hand the damage it’s caused. I’ve had to deal with the complex Niall has about women leaving him, and it almost ruined our relationship before it started. Forgive me if I underestimate your contribution to his life beyond birthing him.”

“You have some nerve!” The door opened and Aoife and Hannah walked in just in time to hear her shriek at me.

“I do. You’re right. But, I’m not ‘some fling’. If you were an active part of his life, you’d know that. Everyone else from Ireland knew. I love your son. Desperately. And I apologize,” that hurt to even say (sorry not sorry), “if you feel that I haven’t adequately respected you. But please quit taking credit for something you had very little to do with. Niall is the amazing person he is in spite of you, not because.” My peace being said, I brushed past her and walk out of the bathroom, my hands shaking and went straight to the bar.

The night proceeded on, but I felt uneasy. It probably wasn’t my place to tell his mother off, even though she richly deserved it. Especially on a night like this. I tried to put it out of my mind, but I couldn’t. My stomach rebelled against me and I was anxious as hell. I’d seen her approach Niall afterwards and the two of them venture outside, their heads bent towards one another. Shit. Before I could check with him, however, the performances started.

Hannah had shared the highlights (greatly exaggerating, as to be expected) with the boys, and Eoghan had declared me his hero. Bressie jokingly offered to pay my tab for the evening. Bobby very obviously called me daughter multiple times in her earshot. At least some people were on my side.

“Hidin’ so I can’t have a dance with ya?” I’d be standing at the bar, sipping another Horan cocktail, and his hands rubbed my hips. He dipped his mouth close to my ear and whispered, “Gotta be careful kissing your neck tonight. Not big on the taste of myself.” I laughed and turned around, wrapping my arms around his neck.

“Hi, bugaboo.”

“Hi.” He kissed my nose. “Heard you’re causing trouble.” My stomach dropped and my face flamed even more. I bit my lip, hard.

“Sorry, I ran of-”

“Don’t apologize,” he stared at me. “No one has ever called Maura on her bullshit before. No one ever stood up for me like that.”

I exhaled, the weight of the world lifting off my shoulders. I pulled on a little piece of hair on his neck. “I could have picked a better venue, though.”

“Probably. But this is twice you’ve proven you’re a fucking bad ass in public.” He kissed me and lead me onto the dance floor as “Fix You” by Coldplay blasted. Appropriate.

This sort of thing has happened more frequently since I started HIDEOBLOG. Thanks to HIDEOBLOG, I've been able to enjoy foods that I never enjoyed before.

I borrowed Miyuki Nakajima's album Tensei and listened to it. As usual, it rocks!

We have finally settled on the location for December's ultimate OOOO Training. I'm glad that we found a place in time. We had initially planned to hold it at Nasu's Training Institute. Wild monkeys and bears roam the area in December though, so they wouldn't let us. There would have been too much snow this time of year anyway.

Toyopy and Colonel had looked for good location, but they couldn't find anything. They made slow progress. I'm really glad that we found our place, even moreso because it's 150,000 square meters large. That's three times the size of an 18-hole golf course.

It sounds awesome. I'm looking forward to training. I'll need to take care and not get lost though, since the site is so large.

I have a habit (well, a selfishness, really) of wanting to meet writers whose work I admire. So I used a connection to set up several interviews and dinner meetings, but plans always fell through because of tough schedules. I invited him to contribute an article for a booklet included with the limited edition of Anubis, and even then I didn't have a chance to meet him personally.

After five years, I finally met Mr. Mikumo in person and had a chance to talk with him. He really is a good person. No one who dreams of outer space is bad.

I felt the alcohol hitting me a bit, so I decided to head over to my little hideout in Nishi Azabu. I met up with Okamura and Kenichiro without heading back to the office.

My hideout's usual bartender speaks the Kansai dialect. I had wanted to listen to his speech and ease my thoughts a bit. Unfortunately, he had to tend bar in an affiliated pub tonight, so I couldn't see him.

Stores opened their doors to Beaujolais Nouveau today.

I heard that only the Japanese become so excited over a release party for wine. I wanted to drink some of the wine before the day ended.

Tomorrow the wine will flow in the Beaujolais Nouveau's home country, France. I should have bought some when I ran across it at noon.

According to the news, Japan has imported the largest amount of wine this year than at any other time in history.

I had missed out on the Beaujolais, so I drank a couple of sidecars to make up for it.
