City Spotlight: The Allure of Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar, sometimes known as the “Temple City of India,” is evidence of Odisha’s rich cultural past. The city has a fantastic collection of old temples, each with unique architectural features and historical importance. The allure of Bhubaneswar is its ability to seamlessly combine the ancient and new, resulting in a compelling ambiance that encourages romance and creativity.
Embracing Local Culture
Couples can add touches of Odisha’s rich culture to their pre-wedding photos to make them more memorable. Authenticity is enhanced in photo shoots by dressing in traditional Odia costumes, such as the colorful Boyanika kurta or the graceful Sambalpuri saree. Interacting with regional craftspeople or obtaining unscripted moments in busy marketplaces such as Saptamatrika can contribute a distinct cultural story to the images. Conventional accessories like the recognizable Konark wheel or the elaborate Pattachitra paintings can enhance the visual narrative even more.
Location Highlights
Pre-wedding photoshoot spots can be found across Bhubaneswar, making for beautiful settings.

Creative Shoot Ideas
To make the most of Bhubaneswar’s different locales, try these creative concepts:

Nature’s Embrace: Use Nandankanan Zoological Park’s verdant surroundings and serene lakes to create dreamy, romantic photographs of the outdoors.
Historical Elegance: Showcase the couple’s enduring love and capture the spirit of history at the Mukteswar Temple or the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves.

Practical Tips
When organizing a pre-wedding photo session in Bhubaneswar, bear the following useful advice in mind:

Weather: When the weather is nice, October through March is ideal for outdoor photo shoots.
Local Vendors: Work with neighborhood videographers and photographers who know the ideal locations and lighting scenarios.
Accommodation: Pick motels or homestays that are conveniently situated to make it simple to get to different filming places.

Shri Jagannath Temple Tour, Puri
The world's longest golden beach is found in the city of Puri, which is also home to the revered Shri Jagannath Temple. Along with Puri, Dwarika, Badrinath, and Rameswar, it is regarded as one of the four Dhamas and the holiest of India's holy locations. It belongs to the Char Dham circuit's quartet of four sacred towns.Numerous myths and legends claim that the Puri Temple is the last resting place of Krishna's heart, which is another factor contributing to its fame. The heart must be changed every twelve years due to the fact that the material it is made of causes it to degrade over time. Prayer drapes and kurtas, which are available for purchase at the temple, are the best clothes for men to wear at the Lord Jagannath Temple. They offer a variety of materials appropriate for handicrafts in addition to handwoven clothes. The best time to visit Puri is from June through March. The monsoon season affects the city between the months of June and September. The city often has a small quantity of rainfall at the beginning of the month, while a large amount occurs during the latter few days of the month. The city enjoys its summer season from March to May.
Please don't hesitate to get in contact with one of our experienced Trip Counselors if you have any questions about the educational and cost-effective Puri trips we provide.

ART OF ODISHA
ART OF ODISHA
Tumblr media
The Rock Art of Odisha dates back to as early as the prehistoric period. The earliest reported are the rock shelters of Vikramkhol in Jharsuguda district. The cells attracted men to live there, who decorated these rock shelters with paintings and engravings in various geometrical forms and figures of human and animals.
HERE ODISHA HISTORY BOOK AVAILABLE
Most of these sites are found in the hills of Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Kalahandi. The rock edicts at Dhauli, Jaugad and the archeological treasures found at excavation sites of Sisupalgarh testify to the earliest highly developed sculptural art of Orissa covering a period of about 2000 years.
The forepart of an element, hewn out of solid rock at Dhauli represents the earliest sculpture in Odisha. With the rise of Kharavela (Chedi dynasty) in the first century BC caves were ordered to cut in the solid rocks for the use of Jain ascetics. The caves of Khandagiri and Udayagiri decorated with highly artistic large panels depicting a vivid picture of the contemporary society find special mention in the rock cut architecture of India.
Figures of Jain tirthankars and Sasanadevas with their emblems have been found in caves in Puri, Keonjhar, Balasore and Koraput districts. The caves consist of one or more cells and a few of them are fronted by pillared verandahs.
The Buddhist sculptural art developed with Emperor Ashoka from 261 BC to about 12th Century AD. With the transforming of Mahayana form of Buddhism to Vajrayan, the creative genius of the artists once again attained its peak as reflected by Buddhist sculptures of Lalitgiri, Udayagiri and Ratnagiri.
Sculptures representing Boddhisatva and Avalokiteswara in different forms along with Buddha images, stupas and monasteries were the main constituent of the early medieval Odishan sculptural art.
However, the art found its supreme expression represented by the sculptures pertaining to various sects of Hinduism in Orissa, the Saivism, Vaishnavism and Shaktism (represented by Durga and her different forms). The Sailodbhava, the Bhaumakaras, the Somavansis and the illustrious Gangas are particularly known for temple building. The sculptures and superb carvings on the temples at Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark are the finest examples of the Odisha’s glorious past.
Look out for the sculptures of nayika and mithuna figures, yakshas and yakhis (the male and female deities associated with ancient fertility cults), heavenly musicians, human poses and expressions, elephants, horses and soldiers and those depicting day to day themes, like hunting, dancing, games and family life. After the fall of the Gangas, sculpture in Odisha vanished as an art form.

History Of Devanagari Script
Tumblr media
Devanagari is a combination of the word’s deva and nagari. Deva translates as “heavenly,” “divine,” or “deity.” Nagari derives from Nagaram, a Sanskrit word that means “town.” Devanagari can therefore be rendered as “from the home of divinity.” The ancient term Nagar gave rise to the name Devanagari.
Nagari was one of the primary scripts used for the Sanskrit literature and first appeared in the northwest of the Indian subcontinent around 633 CE. It was fully evolved by the 11th century CE.
The 1st to 4th century CE inscriptions found in Gujarat provide some of the earliest epigraphic evidence of the development of the Sanskrit Nagar script in ancient India. [10] Nagar script variants, which are recognisable as being close to Devanagari, are first documented in Sanskrit Rudradaman inscriptions from the first century CE,Inscriptions from the Middle Ages indicate widespread use of scripts related to the Nagari, with scripts exhibiting local script alongside the adoption of Nagari scripts. For instance, the Siddha Matrika script and an early Telugu-Kannada script can both be found on the Pattadakal pillar from the middle of the eighth century in Karnataka.
By the seventh century CE, the Nagari script was in widespread use, and by the end of the first millennium, it had reached its full development. Numerous pillar and cave-temple inscriptions, like the 11th-century Udayagiri inscriptions in Madhya Pradesh, attest to the employment of Sanskrit in Nagari script in mediaeval India.
Moreover, the British Museum is home to an inscribed brick from 1217 CE that was discovered in Uttar Pradesh. Prototypes of the script and related variations have been found alongside historic artefacts outside of India, in places including Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Indonesia. Buddhists in East Asia used the Siddha Matrika script, which is thought to be the closest ancestor of Nagari has historically been the foremost among the Indian scripts.
It has been used by religiously educated people in South Asia for a very long time to record and convey information, coexisting alongside a wide range of regional scripts (such as Mo, Kaithi, and Mahajani) used for administration, trade, and other daily activities all throughout the country.
In Kashmir, Sharada is still used in parallel. The Kutila inscription of Bareilly, which dates to VS 1049 (992 CE), exhibits the formation of the horizontal bar to combine letters pertaining to a word in an early form of Devanagari. [1] With a writing date of roughly 150 BCE and a transcription date of the 14th century CE, the 1,413 Nagari pages of a commentary by Patanjali are one of the earliest Sanskrit manuscripts from the early post-Maurya period still in existence.

The Heliodorus Pillar
Tumblr media
“The Heliodorus pillar is a stone column that was erected around 113 BCE in central India[1] in Besnagar (near Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh). The pillar was called the Garuda-standard by Heliodorus, referring to the deity Garuda. The pillar is commonly named after Heliodorus, who was an ambassador of the Indo-Greek king Antialcidas from Taxila, and was sent to the Indian ruler Bhagabhadra.[2] A dedication written in Brahmi script was inscribed on the pillar, venerating Vāsudeva, the Deva deva the "God of Gods" and the Supreme Deity.[3][4][5][6] The pillar also glorifies the Indian ruler as "Bhagabhadra the savior". The pillar is a stambha which symbolizes joining earth, space and heaven, and is thought to connote the "cosmic axis" and express the cosmic totality of the Deity.[3]
The Heliodorus pillar site is located near the confluence of two rivers, about 60 kilometres (37 mi) northeast from Bhopal, 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) from the Buddhist stupa of Sanchi, and 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the Hindu Udayagiri site.[7]
The pillar was discovered by Alexander Cunningham in 1877. Two major archaeological excavations in the 20th-century have revealed the pillar to be a part of an ancient Vāsudeva temple site.[4][8][9] Aside from religious scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita, the epigraphical inscriptions on the Heliodorus pillar and the Hathibada Ghosundi Inscriptions contain some of the earliest known writings of Vāsudeva-Krishna devotion and early Vaishnavism and are considered the first archeological evidence of its existence.[10][11][12][13][14][6] The pillar is also one of the earliest surviving records of a foreign convert into Vaishnavism.[15][6] Alternatively, making dedications to foreign gods was only a logical practice for the Greeks, intended to appropriate their local power. This cannot be regarded as a "conversion" to Hinduism.[16]”
Tumblr media
Main inscription of the Heliodorus pillar, circa 110 BCE
“There are two inscriptions on the pillar. The inscriptions have been analysed by several authors, such as E. J. Rapson,[44] Sukthankar,[27]Richard Salomon,[5] and Shane Wallace.[4]
The text of the inscriptions is in the Brahmi script of the Sunga period, the language is Central-western epigraphic Prakrit, with a few Sanskritized spellings.[5] The first inscription describes the private religious dedication of Heliodorus (Translations: Richard Salomon):[5]
Line 1. This Garuda-standard of Vāsudeva, the god of gods Line 2. was constructed here by Heliodora (Heliodoros), the Bhagavata, Line 3. son of Dion, a man of Takhkhasila (Taxila), Line 4. the Greek ambassador who came from the Great King Line 5. Amtalikita (Antialkidas) to King Line 6. Kasiputra Bhagabhadra, the Savior, Line 7. prospering in (his) fourteenth regnal year.[45]
The second inscription on the pillar, in the same script, recites a verse from the Hindu epic Mahabharata:[22][26]
Line 1. (These?) three steps to immortality, when correctly followed, Line 2. lead to heaven: control, generosity, and attention.[45]”
Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliodorus_pillar
This monument is of great importance for many reasons. I see that there is a debate about the conversion or not of Heliodorus to early Vaishnavism. It seems that most Greeks established in India after Alexander converted to or at least have been heavily influenced by Buddhism, but nothing excludes that some among them adopted other forms of Indian religiosity. I remind only that (according to most scholars) the great Indian epic Mahabharata was still in a process of formation in Heliodorus’ time, but also that the use of the term “hinduism” is perhaps rather anachronistic for the same period.
