14. begraafplaats sint-rochus ulbeek

in ulbeek wellen vormen een imposante brouwerij en een gerestaureerde kerk een beschermd dorpszicht.

de sint-rochuskerk dateert van het jaar 1000 en het huidige volume van 1841. ze staat al leeg sinds 1938. na ontwijding en verschillende bestemmingen, zoals parochiezaal, toneelzaal, fabriekshal en opslagplaats, wordt ze… een ruïne. de bouwvallige toren wordt afgebroken.

in 1998 graven archeologen de resten op van een romaanse en gotische kapel. en ook tientallen skeletten.

de kerk wordt gered van de sloop. ze wordt een overdekte begraafplaats die aansluit bij het naastliggend kerkhof. de zijramen zijn tot beneden opengebroken: geen glas of deur. je loopt vrij vanuit de kapel naar het kerkhof en omgekeerd.

het dak van het koor wordt verwijderd en vervangen door een staal-glasconstructie. het overvloedig daglicht trekt je spontaan het koor in. een beglaasde vloer loopt over en rond de resterende grondvesten.

daar staat levensgroot de “treurende familie”: het kunstwerk van herman moermans, gekapt uit de stam van een ten onrechte gevelde eeuwenoude eik.

het schip blijft behouden. het oude dakgebinte is ’s avonds verlicht. twintig prefab grafkelders zijn op een veertigtal centimeter boven de grond afgedekt met grafplaten in donkere natuursteen. in de achterwand bevindt zich een columbarium. de houten balustrade van het doksaal is in zijn oorspronkelijke staat hersteld.

de afgekapte binnenmuren tonen de speklagen van witte en rode baksteen.

het enige resterende glas-in-loodraam in de linkerzijgevel is gerestaureerd.

dit project van architect wilfried de wijngaert wint in 2012 de vlaamse monumentenprijs.

de openheid tussen kerk en kerkhof schept een specifieke intimiteit: rust, stilte, bezinning… speurend naar betekenis…

deze architectuur inspireert de herbestemming van kerken en de eigentijdse rol van religieus erfgoed: een perfecte combinatie van erfgoed, cultuur en toerisme.

Enduring Eye exhibition to open in Los Angeles

The Society’s highly acclaimed centenary exhibition honouring the achievements of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the men of the Endurance expedition of 1914-1917, opens at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, Los Angeles this September.

On show from 30 September 2017 to 28 January 2018, Endurance: the Antarctic Legacy of Sir Ernest Shackleton and Frank Hurley is the first US exhibition by the Society. It is hoped that a further two venues in the US will host the exhibition, which includes loans of artefacts from the Society’s extensive Antarctic collection alongside the remarkable images taken by Frank Hurley.

“During the day I hacked through the thick walls of the refrigerator to retrieve the negatives stored therein. They were located beneath four feet of mushy ice and, by stripping to the waist and diving under, I hauled them out. Fortunately, they are soldered up in double tin linings, so I am hopeful they may not have suffered by their submersion.” Frank Hurley’s diary, 2 November 1915

As his diary attests, the images featured in the exhibition are only available thanks to Hurley’s efforts, under the most extreme circumstances, to save the negatives. In preparation for the exhibition, the original photographic glass and celluloid negatives held by the Society were digitised. The result was over 90 high quality images, which reveal every detail contained in Hurley’s original negatives.

The Society has collaborated with the Salto Ulbeek studio in Belgium to create a limited edition series of platinum prints of Hurley’s images. Platinum prints have an expanded tonal range, three-dimensionality and painterly quality when compared to black and white silver prints, making them a fitting testament to the skill and quality of Hurley’s original photography.

SILO art center ulbeek project

Here is a series of moodboards and artworks by Lode Coen, as well as his original photos for the project of Marjan Bollen who wants to turn this former industrial silo in Ulbeek/Wellen into a thriving art center. The silo has three towers and beautiful giant metal pipes making this into a sort of an Industrial Heritage Site.

This is also being developed into a polyvalent space for yoga, music, dance, performance, teaching, art & culture. As well as art studios and art and design galleries. The location is in Ulbeek a small village part of greater Wellen, in Limburg the eastern province of Flanders, Belgium, Europe.
