VERSES 27 - 33

Are you harder to create or is the heaven? He (God) constructed it. [27] He raised its ceiling and proportioned it. [28] And he made dark its night and brought out its radiance [in the day]. [29] And after that He spread the earth. [30] He brought forth from it its water and its pasture. [31] And he set the mountains firmly. 32] A provision for you and your livestock. [33]

27-33.1 'Are you harder to create or is the heaven? He (God) constructed it.: [Ashaddu khalgan (harder to create)]. The question of anything being more difficult to do does not apply to God. Therefore, here the word 'harder' means grander and more complex.

After the mention of the defiance of Fir'awn and his fate as an example and a warning for those who would deny the Resurrection and Day of Judgement, a rhetorical question is asked to the idolaters:* Can the creation of man be compared to the complexity and vast creation of the heavens and the earth? This question has been answered in Q40:57:

The creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of mankind do not know.

According to some exegetes, the creation of man here refers to their resurrection after their death. It is a reply to the mocking of the idolaters mentioned in the earlier verses of this surah, when they asked, "Will we indeed be returned to [our] former state of life? Even after we are rotted bones?" God reminds man of the grandeur of the creation that they witness as a proof of His ability to resurrect them in a world of the Hereafter, which they have not yet seen

27-33.2 [Al-Sama' (the heaven)]. The term is derived from samawa, meaning that which is towards the sky, or something raised high above other things and covering them. Here, it refers to the universe created by God above and beyond the earth.

[Banaha (He constructed it)]. God reminds man that He has constructed the heaven, with its countless stars and galaxies, that they see around them. And when He has created something so much grander than man, He is quite capable of bringing them back to life. Q36:81 states:

Is not He who created the heavens and the earth able to create the likes of them? Yes, indeed! And He is the supreme Creator, the all-Knowing.

27-33.3 He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.: [Samkaha (its ceiling)]. Samk refers to the roof or highest elevation of something, in contrast to 'umq which refers to its depth. 'Raised the ceiling' of the heaven refers to the expansive reach of the universe that God has created.

[Sawwaha ( proportioned it). The verb sawwà is derived from sawiya which means to be equal, and its verbal noun taswiyah means to organize, proportion, and perfect the make of something Referring to the heaven, it means that every aspect of it has been created to perform its function perfectly.

27-33.4 And he made dark its night and brought out its radiance lin the day].: [Aghtasha (made dark)]. This refers to the darkening of the night making it difficult to see clearly.

[Duhahà (its radiance)]. Duha refers to the early hours of the morning when the sun begins to rise into the sky and its radiance spreads out. Here it refers to the day itself, which is contrasted to the night. And the night and day have been attributed to the heaven because they occur on earth (and throughout the universe)s due to the movement of the planets in respect to their respective suns.

We have discussed the vital role of darkness and light in the life of all creatures on the earth in the tafsir of Surat al-Layl (92).

27-33.5 'And after that He spread the earth.: [Bada dhalika (after that)]. Some exegetes have said that the verse does not mean that God created the earth after He created the heavens. Rather, bada dhalika here means ma a dhalika (with that). In this case, the verse would mean, 'and moreover, He spread the earth? This is similar to the usage in 268:13 which describes a slanderer:

[He is] harsh, and besides that, an illegitimate pretender.

[Dahaha (He spread it)] is derived from dahw meaning to expand and spread out. ' Here it denotes facilitating the habitation of human beings on earth. The spreading of the land, from below the Ka bah, is called dahw al-ard, and is marked on the day of 24th of Dhu al-Qa'dah.

27-33.6 He brought forth from it its water and its pasture.: The earth was made such that it yielded water through springs, rivers and other watercourses. A marvellous system of rain from the sky and water in the land makes up the water-cycle that provides a continual supply of life-sustaining water to the earth and its inhabitants.

[Mar'aha (its pasture)]. Mar'à is grassland where animals graze. The term is derived from raà, which means to tend animals.

Pasture here may include all kind of plants that are consumed by both man and animals." It has been used in this meaning in Q12:12:

Send him (Yusuf) with us tomorrow that he may eat (yarta) and play...

27-33.7 'And he set the mountains firmly.: The firm mountains stabilize the earth, allowing it to store water in its expanses. We have discussed the role of the mountains in the tafsir of Surat al-Naba' (78).

27-33.8 'A provision for you and your livestock.: [Mata' (provision)] means something that gives long lasting benefit." Everything that has been mentioned in the previous verses - the canopy of the heaven, the darkness of night and light of day, the water and vegetation, and the stability provided by the mountains - is provision that vitally benefits human and animal life on earth.

This harmonious arrangement that facilitates his life encourages man to ponder about his Creator, to be in awe of His station (magam), and to give thanks for His innumerable bounties

SUMMARY OF THE VERSES

The verses describe how the creation of the universe is much grander than the creation of man. As a provision for man and the animals that he domesticates, as well as all the other creatures, God created a harmonious system that gives a canopy to the earth, brings about night and day, makes available water and pasture, and protects the earth with strong mountains.

REFLECTIVE LEARNING

Let me reflect on how much simpler my creation was compared to the creation of the vast heavens.
