The only real hope for our future, is that we learn from our past. In the middle of our lives.., we look back over our youthful decisions and wonder why no one told us to slow down and enjoy ourselves? I was born in 1957. I've had a front row seat to the Civil Rights Movement(s), assassinations of a sitting President and Black Leaders for daring to speak out against the atrocities done against colored people, as we were known, then. So much blood has been spilled toward a race of people that were forced to come to a stolen country and literally work as slaves, with no compensation, before or after, and treated as a nuisance when our talents and athleticism aren't being exploited or put on display. I spent the first six years in a segregated schools and churches, entering stores through back doors and being taught to pay attention to the 'colored only' signs that controled my behavior away from home. My segregated school had little to no resources and when forced integration happened in my seventh year, I experienced new books and cold water fountains for the first time. I also was called a bigger and spat upon, in those hallowed halls of learning. There are two things happening at the same time, all the time, in a Black's mind ... Living and Staying Alive. Trust Us ... they are not the same. While most experience living their best lives, enjoying the fruits of their labor, feeling complete and relaxed ... people of color live wondering if this is the day, we put one foot out of place and suffer the destruction of everything we hold dear.
