Meanwhile... from the Hall Of Justice. Did you know that in the early 1970s, Union Terminal became the model for the home of the Justice League in the cartoon Super Friends? Artist Al Gumer drew the Hall of Justice and based his creation off of the façade of Union Terminal, earning our building a permanent place in popular culture.

Did you know that our beloved green pigmented terrazzo Union Terminal fountain holds 44,000 gallons of water?! The terrazzo and marble chips of the fountain were applied over a two-layer polyurea waterproofing system that will protect the fountain structure from future water penetration. This iconic CMC building feature turned on for the first time after our restoration this past summer, and we can't wait for future summers with the fountain!

Have you found and utilized these neat interactives created by our friends at GBBN Architects yet? Placed throughout the building, they highlight various aspects of our recent restoration along with #UnionTerminalDecoDetails. This one showcases the technology in the restoration. Without it, the entire 500,000 square feet of our building would have needed to be measured by hand in order to create needed drawings. Instead, 2,300 laser scanning stations were used to collect 4.3 billion data points so work could begin quickly. Next time you visit, scan the QR code to learn and see more.

The artist who received the contract for the art in the public rooms during the construction of Union Terminal was a Frenchman named Pierre Bourdelle. Among other things, Bourdelle was asked to decorate the ceilings in the private dining rooms. For the one seen here, he painted three ceiling murals, all featuring elaborate and fanciful plant life. Swipe for a glimpse of the room and it’s #UnionTerminalDecoDetails. This space is occasional included in our free weekend Rotunda tours, and is also a rentable area- contact Private Events for details.

🕐With the recent time change, we thought we'd share the #UnionTerminalDecoDetails of our beloved and historic #clock this #TerminalTuesday! During our restoration, its gears and mechanisms were fully cleaned, balanced and repaired and new red and amber glass fill the 18-foot diameter frame. After being repaired off-site, crews carried the internal mechanism up five flights of #UnionTerminal stairs piece by piece before reassembling it on-site. The hour and minute hands, measuring more than six and seven feet long, were then lifted up and reinstalled.

Have you found and utilized these neat interactives created by our friends at GBBN yet? Placed throughout CMC, they highlight various aspects of our recent #UnionTerminal restoration along with #UnionTerminalDecoDetails. This one showcases the steel beneath the stone. It takes a lot of steel to build up a building like this. How much? Over 1,000 steel columns and 7,800 steel beams form the structural frame behind the building's historic stone and brick surfaces. The project team used a 3D model of the structure to properly coordinate locations of all the ducts, piping and wiring through the extensive steel skeleton. Next time you visit, scan the QR code to learn and see more.
