So where *do* you recommend people go to find beginning coding resources? I am at a write-SQL-queries, solve-math-problems-in-python kind of level of ability, but I have no idea where to go from there.

@shinelikethunder wrote a nice addition about getting started to the original post, but if you can write SQL queries and do math in Python I would put you slightly above complete beginner level.

There's a lot of different learning styles, but if it were me, I'd do what I did do when I was in that position: figure out a project to build, and set out to build it.

IMHO, some of the important characteristics of a good such project are:

Enjoyable/interesting to you: one of my first "serious" projects (we're talking 15 years ago now) was a cute visitors counter for my website so I could have custom images for numbers rather than the ugly pre-sets other sites offered; another was a sudoku in Flash that used pictures of my favorite characters in place of numbers; when I wanted to learn how to use payments APIs, I ended up making RobinBoob... Regardless of which project you choose, building something that plays to your interests will energize you, and help you see it through the end.

Reasonably ambitious: as a programmer, you'll rarely know upfront how to build your whole project (and if you do, you might soon find out there's hidden difficulties you had not predicted). Finding solutions to problems you don't know how to solve is a fundamental skill, and something you should be learning almost since day 0. A lot of learning programming is just becoming better at knowing what to Google (and how to read the results you get back). This is also where having a supportive environment to ask questions in helps. Also, "is this project within my current reach?" might be easier for a seasoned expert—who already made many such mistakes—to judge.

Breakable in small, incremental steps: good learning projects don't take months and months to complete, or at least don't take months and months to create the first "deliverable" you (or your friends) can play around with. "Quick wins" are great: once you solve the core problem you really wanted to tackle, you should to be able to decide whether you want to continue going down the rabbit hole, or move on to something else. At the same time, stretch goals are also amazing learning opportunities: you already have a solid base you know the nook and crannies of, and that base will continue existing regardless of whether your stretch goals fail, so what about going for something even more ambitious? You have nothing to lose, and everything to learn!

Now, my main area of specialization is web development, which is uniquely suited to quickly building visual, interactive software others can play around with. So, while I'm biased, my advice will always be: pick up some HTML/CSS/JavaScript classes, and apply the above principles to build something to share with everyone else on the web. Really, there's nothing like seeing people use software you have built yourself.

History of the Green Card

The green card, which only recently became green again, has a history with a variety of names and colors. It’s transformation over time into a critical piece of photo identification reflects the scarcity of residency in the United States. The security features are proof that numerous counterfeiters will stop at nothing to duplicate it. In fact, the history of the green card is very colorful.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officially refers to the green card as the Permanent Resident Card. However, it has also been known over time as a Resident Alien Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card. Internally, USCIS refers to it as Form I-551. You’ll see typed in small print in the corner of your newer cards.

It wasn’t until 1940 that foreign nationals were even required to register within the United States. The Alien Registration Act of 1940 required that all aliens (non-U.S. citizens) within the U.S. register with the federal government at post offices. The registration forms were forwarded to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) for processing, and a receipt card (Form AR-3) was mailed to each registrant as proof of compliance with the law. The law did not discriminate between legal and illegal alien residents. All aliens had to register, and all received AR-3 documents.

The First Green Card

The first green card emerged soon after World War II. Congress enacted the Alien Registration Act of 1940, which required foreign-born persons 14 years of age and older to report to a U.S. post office to be fingerprinted and register their presence in the United States. As immigrants began streaming through U.S. borders, alien registration ceased to take place at post offices and became part of regular immigration procedures at ports of entry and immigration offices. Immigrants with no legal basis to remain in the United States were required to leave or were removed. Those with a valid claim to permanent residency received documentation to prove their status. INS began to issue different documents based on the alien’s admission status to replace the receipt cards. For example, visitors received an I-94c, temporary foreign laborers received an I-100a, and lawful permanent residents (LPRs) received an I-151. The pale green colored Form I-151 became coveted proof that the holder was entitled to live and work indefinitely in the United States

The Internal Security Act of 1950 increased the value of Form I-151, Alien Registration Receipt Card. Effective April 17, 1951, aliens holding AR-3 cards could replace them with a new Form I-151. However, only those with legal status could replace their AR-3. What’s more, aliens who could not prove their legal admission into the United States were subject to prosecution for violating U.S. immigration laws.

As a result, the Form I-151 card represented security to its holder. It indicated the right to live and work in the United States permanently and instantly communicated that right to law enforcement officials. Because of the card’s cumbersome official name — Alien Registration Receipt Card — immigrants, attorneys, and INS workers came to refer to it by its color, calling it the “green card.”

As the desire to immigrate to the United States grew, so did the value of the green card. By the 1950s, INS was burdened with the problem of counterfeit green cards. To combat document fraud, the INS issued 17 different re-designs of the card between 1952 and 1977. Over the entire history of the green card, counterfeit cards have been a problem.

Form I-551, Resident Alien Card, is Born (1977-1989)

A more counterfeit-resistant version of the green card was developed in 1977. The newer, machine-verifiable green card was produced only in a Texas facility to improve uniformity and quality. The formerly paper cards were now made durable like credit cards and driver licenses. A fingerprint, signature and A-number were added as additional identification measures.

Immigration and Naturalization Service renamed it with its current form number, Form I-551, and adopted a new name, “Resident Alien Card.” Cards issued between 1977 and August 1989 do not have document numbers or expiration dates and are valid indefinitely.

Business Friendly Green Card (1989-1997)

However, employers found it difficult to verify identity because of the various versions of the green card. So INS once again issued a new card version in August 1989. These peach-colored cards contain expiration dates, but do not have document numbers and have since expired.

To further combat document fraud, effective March 20, 1996, the old Form I-151 Green Cards issued prior to 1979, became obsolete. The Form I-551 Alien Registration Receipt Card became the only valid green card.

Permanent Resident Card (1997-2010)

During the history of the green card, fraud has always been a problem. As quickly as INS worked to counter fraud, counterfeiters caught up. Thus, a more secure card was developed and issued in December 1997. The revised card bared a new name, “Permanent Resident Card,” but retained the Form I-551 number. A unique document number (also known as a card number) was also added to the card.

In May 2004, the design was modified slightly with the Department of Homeland Security seal and a detailed hologram on the front of the card. A large number of permanent residents continue to carry this version of the card. The last cards will expire in 2020.

Green Once Again (2010 – 2017)

The card regained its green coloring in May 2010 when USCIS released one of the most fraud-resistant versions to date. Since the last of these cards won’t expire until 2027, many of this edition continue to be in the hands of permanent residents. The cards feature security technologies such as holographic images, laser engraved fingerprints, high-resolution micro-images, and radio frequency identification (RFID).

According to USCIS, “state-of-the-art technology incorporated into the new card prevents counterfeiting, obstructs tampering, and facilitates quick and accurate authentication.”

The enhancements of this edition reflect the importance of maintaining a valid, unexpired copy of a green card. Validating identity at airports and with employers through the I-9 verification process makes the card a vital piece of identify for U.S. permanent residents.

The Modern Green Card (2017 – present)

In May 2017, USCIS began issuing a redesigned green card as part of the Next Generation Secure Identification Document Project. In a constant pursuit to prevent fraud, the current edition of the green card uses enhanced graphics and fraud-resistant security features.

USCIS takes a proactive approach, often working with other agencies like U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to enhance document security and deter counterfeiting. The result is the most highly secure and tamper resistant identification in the history of the green card.

Previous editions of the card continue to be valid for I-9 employment verification provided they are not expired.

So it turns out lots of people have this idea that anything and everything that you do with your website or on the web could have an impact. Well, some things have an indirect impact and maybe even a few of these do. I’ll talk through those. But tons and tons of things that you do don’t directly affect your Google rankings. So I’ll try and walk through some of these that I’ve heard or seen questions about, especially in the recent past.

1. The age of your website.

First one, longstanding debate: the age of your website. Does Google care if you registered your site in 1998 or 2008 or 2016? No, they don’t care at all. They only care the degree to which your content actually helps people and that you have links and authority signals and those kinds of things. Granted, it is true there’s correlation going in this direction. If you started a site in 1998 and it’s still going strong today, chances are good that you’ve built up lots of links and authority and equity and all these kinds of signals that Google does care about.

But maybe you’ve just had a very successful first two years, and you only registered your site in 2015, and you’ve built up all those same signals. Google is actually probably going to reward that site even more, because it’s built up the same authority and influence in a very small period of time versus a much longer one.

2. Whether you do or don’t use Google apps and services. So people worry that, “Oh, wait a minute. Can’t Google sort of monitor what’s going on with my Google Analytics account and see all my data there and AdSense? What if they can look inside Gmail or Google Docs?”

Google, first off, the engineers who work on these products and the engineers who work on search, most of them would quit right that day if they discovered that Google was peering into your Gmail account to discover that you had been buying shady links or that you didn’t look as authoritative as you really were on the web or these kinds of things. So don’t fear the use of these or the decision not to use them will hurt or harm your rankings in Google web search in any way. It won’t.

3. Likes, shares, plus-ones, tweet counts of your web pages.

So you have a Facebook counter on there, and it shows that you have 17,000 shares on that page. Wow, that’s a lot of shares. Does Google care? No, they don’t care at all. In fact, they’re not even looking at that or using it. But what if it turns out that many of those people who shared it on Facebook also did other activities that resulted in lots of browser activity and search activity, click-through activity, increased branding, lower pogo-sticking rates, brand preference for you in the search results, and links? Well, Google does care about a lot of those things. So indirectly, this can have an impact. Directly, no. Should you buy 10,000 Facebook shares? No, you should not.

4. What about raw bounce rate or time on site?

Well, this is sort of an interesting one. Let’s say you have a time on site of two minutes, and you look at your industry averages, your benchmarks, maybe via Google Analytics if you’ve opted in to sharing there, and you see that your industry benchmarks are actually lower than average. Is that going to hurt you in Google web search? Not necessarily. It could be the case that those visitors are coming from elsewhere. It could be the case that you are actually serving up a faster-loading site and you’re getting people to the information that they need more quickly, and so their time on site is slightly lower or maybe even their bounce rate is higher.

But so long as pogo-sticking type of activity, people bouncing back to the search results and choosing a different result because you didn’t actually answer their query, so long as that remains fine, you’re not in trouble here. So raw bounce rate, raw time on site, I wouldn’t worry too much about that.

5. The tech under your site’s hood.

Are you using certain JavaScript libraries like Node or React, one is Facebook, one is Google. If you use Facebook’s, does Google give you a hard time about it? No. Facebook might, due to patent issues, but anyway we won’t worry about that. .NET or what if you’re coding up things in raw HTML still? Just fine. It doesn’t matter. If Google can crawl each of these URLs and see the unique content on there and the content that Google sees and the content visitors see is the same, they don’t care what’s being used under the hood to deliver that to the browser.

6. Having or not having a knowledge panel on the right-hand side of the search results.

It could be that showing up here and it probably is that showing up here means you’re going to get a lot more of these clicks, a higher share of those clicks, and it’s a good thing. But does this impact your rankings for some other totally unbranded query to your site? No, it doesn’t at all. I wouldn’t stress too much. Over time, sites tend to build up site links and knowledge panels as their brands become bigger and as they become better known and as they get more coverage around the web and online and offline. So this is not something to stress about.

7. What about using shared hosting or some of the inexpensive hosting options out there?

Well, directly, this is not going to affect you unless it hurts load speed or up time. If it doesn’t hurt either of those things and they’re just as good as they were before or as they would be if you were paying more or using solo hosting, you’re just fine. Don’t worry about it.

8. Use of defaults that Google already assumes.

So when Google crawls a site, when they come to a site, if you don’t have a robots.txt file, or you have a robots.txt file but it doesn’t include any exclusions, any disallows, or they reach a page and it has no meta robots tag, they’re just going to assume that they get to crawl everything and that they should follow all the links.

Using things like the meta robots “index, follow” or using, on an individual link, a rel=follow inside the href tag, or in your robots.txt file specifying that Google can crawl everything, doesn’t boost anything. They just assume all those things by default. Using them in these places, saying yes, you can do the default thing, doesn’t give you any special benefit. It doesn’t hurt you, but it gives you no benefit. Google just doesn’t care.

9. Characters that you use as separators in your title element.

Now, maybe you’ve found that one of these characters has a slightly better click-through rate and preference than another one. If you’ve found that, great. We have not seen one broadly on the web. Some people will say they particularly like the pipe over the hyphen. I don’t think it matters too much. I think it’s up to you.

10. What about using headlines and the H1, H2, H3 tags?

Well, I’ve heard this said: If you put your headline inside an H2 rather than an H1, Google will consider it a little less important. No, that is definitely not true. In fact, I’m not even sure the degree to which Google cares at all whether you use H1s or H2s or H3s, or whether they just look at the content and they say, “Well, this one is big and at the top and bold. That must be the headline, and that’s how we’re going to treat it. This one is lower down and smaller. We’re going to say that’s probably a sub-header.”

Whether you use an H5 or an H2 or an H3, that is your CSS on your site and up to you and your designers. It is still best practices in HTML to make sure that the headline, the biggest one is the H1. I would do that for design purposes and for having nice clean HTML and CSS, but I wouldn’t stress about it from Google’s perspective. If your designers tell you, “Hey, we can’t get that headline in H1. We’ve got to use the H2 because of how our style sheets are formatted.” Fine. No big deal. Don’t stress.

Normally on Whiteboard Friday, we would end right here. But today, I’d like to ask. These 10 are only the tip of the iceberg. Spend a cozy weekend in the historic seaside town

Known for its world-class aquarium, Hollywood-famous pizza place and New England charm, Mystic, Connecticut, is the perfect weekend destination for Long Islanders year-round. Winter is an especially great time to visit the seaside town, when crowds are fewer and off-season rates are available. When you’re ready to get out of town for a few days, choose an under-the-radar destination like Mystic, and don’t miss out on these awesome activities and refreshing restaurants.

A Room with a View

There are many elegant inns and quaint B&Bs in Mystic, but you can’t go wrong staying at Hilton Mystic, 20 Coogan Blvd. The location can’t be beat—it’s a literal stone’s throw to the aquarium and Olde Mistick Village and a short drive to the seaport and historic downtown.

The hotel pays homage to the seafaring heritage of the area with nautical decorative touches and offers all the luxuries you would expect from a Hilton—comfortable guest suites, a fitness center, an indoor pool, event space and on-site dining at The Irons, which features live musical entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays.

If you’d like to curl up with a good book, there are plenty of options on the first floor, including one of the seats next to the outdoor fire pits.

Perhaps the best feature is the mini-fridge in the room, where you can conveniently store all the leftovers you’ll be saving from all the great restaurants in town…More on that later.

Get Touristic in Mystic

Sprawled across 19 acres on the riverfront, the Mystic Seaport Museum is the largest maritime museum in the country. Long Islanders will recognize it as Old Bethpage Village Restoration with a nautical bent on steroids. More than 60 historic buildings stand on the property to make up a 19th-century seafaring village complete with haberdashery, hoop shop, cooperage, chandlery, clam shack, boathouse and tavern.

The shipyard and collection of historic vessels is impressive. The L.A. Dunton, a 19th-century fishing schooner, is a National Historic Landmark. Another National Historic Landmark, the Charles W. Morgan is the only wooden whaling ship left in the world. Visitors are welcome aboard the restored whaleship than in its 80-year career, embarked on 37 years-long voyages.

There are always different activities and exhibits going on, in addition to the permanent exhibits on display. Especially with kids, you could easily spend a whole day exploring all the Mystic Seaport Museum has to offer.

Likewise, you could spend many hours exploring the Mystic Aquarium. Around every corner is another incredible close-up encounter with animals you’d likely never happen upon outside of an aquarium. When you first walk in, you’ll see some smiley and friendly beluga whales. These belugas are not shy—they’re always mugging for the camera, and look soft and squishy like a stuffed animal, you’ll just want to pet them.

Next, check out the outdoor exhibits, where you may find turtles among the tall grasses and lily pads. Then head straight to the penguins. Penguins! This group of African Penguins love to zoom all around their tank, flapping their wings like the propeller of a motorboat. You can watch them gliding about from above and also through glass under the surface. The sea lion exhibit is nearby where the ‘dogs of the ocean’ swim around playfully and sometimes come up to exercise their vocal cords.

Inside, you’ll find fish of every variety, plus turtles, crabs, starfish, you name it. Prepare to spend several minutes mesmerized by the motions of jelly fish and the extreme colors of biofluorescent coral.

All around, there are photo opportunities and interactive exhibits supposedly for kids, but fun for adults too, many of which teach about conservation of our oceans and waterways. Educational exhibits about the Long Island Sound hit home when you see the threats to this critical ecosystem we share.

Get Artistic in Mystic

For a truly unique experience, drop by Studio Jeffrey P’an on a Saturday at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. for a live glassblowing demonstration. It is amazing to watch him and his team work in his open-air studio at 25 Roosevelt Ave. In the 15 action-packed minutes it takes to make a martini glass, P’an and his team operate as a well-oiled machine, using torches and shaping tools, as well as furnaces reaching unfathomable temperatures. Gloves somehow only figure into the final step.

P’an is an experienced artist and moves with an effortless confidence. He narrates each step along the way as you watch the vessel emerge into existence. The beauty of his finished pieces—ranging from jewelry to vases to sculptures large and small—boggle the mind. After the demonstration, he is happy to answer questions and talk about his process. The craftsman described a technique that he’s been using lately that involves coins of glass fused together. He explained that each glass color, on a chemical level, reacts slightly differently to the heat, which creates variation in texture. Sometimes he keeps that texture on the outside of the final piece, while other times he smooths the outside and keeps the texture on the inside. Some of his pieces resemble impressionist paintings, while others seem to be channeling abstract shapes like a drippy Dali clock.

P’an’s artwork is even featured at the Mystic Aquarium where visitors and fish have been enjoying it since 2010.

Any trip to Mystic should include a visit to his gorgeous studio where you can find one-of-a-kind souvenirs for your loved ones and yourself.

All You Can Eat

In addition to the historic sites, family-friendly activities and art scene, Mystic also has an abundance of excellent restaurants going for it. Seafood is the name of the game. You can find it on every menu, whipped up every which way.

The Engine Room, located at 14 Holmes St. in the beautifully restored Lathrop Marine Engine building, serves up locally sourced American comfort food, plus a large variety of craft beers and bourbon. They make good burgers—including a tasty veggie burger made from wheat berries and mushrooms—and great fries that are seasoned and salted to perfection. Their butternut squash appetizer is delicious due to the addition of crème fraiche and pecans. Also try the deviled farm egg topped with crispy onions for a nice mix of textures.

Salads at the Engine Room are also a good choice for lunch or dinner. The “Gado Gado” Indonesian Salad features local vegetables, boiled potato, crispy soft-boiled egg and a spicy peanut dressing. The farm fresh chopped salad has chicken, roasted carrots, avocado, pickled onions, cornbread croutons, bell peppers, crumbled feta and green goddess dressing over local greens from Stone Acres Farm.

The gastropub also offers several sandwiches, including pulled pork, hot chicken, fried fish and sausage, and shakes in unusual flavors like banana bread and chocolate mint. The shakes can cleverly be spiked with bourbon or rum upon request.

Less than two blocks away at 24 E Main St., Grass & Bone, affiliated with the Engine Room, is both neighborhood butcher shop and restaurant, offering casual counter service for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Filled with eggs, black beans, hash browns, chimichurri, cilantro and pickled red onion, the griddled breakfast burrito is a hearty option to start your day. The farm egg omelet is a lovely option featuring two eggs, diced tomatoes, creamy feta and an herb pesto over delicate dressed greens. The herb pesto enhances the dish, but when has pesto not enhanced everything it touched? Grass & Bone is kind enough to sell their homemade sauces so you can bring the tastiest bits of your vacation home with you.

Tucked away on the Mystic River waterfront, Red 36 is Mystic’s best kept secret. With its prime location at 2 Washington St. and big windows, the seafood-centric restaurant is an excellent place to take in a sunset over a nice shrimp cocktail or glass of wine.

Of the appetizers on the dinner menu, the Thai peanut calamari and nachos are particularly popular. The fried Brussels sprouts, which are common on many menus these days, are on point. Not every restaurant does them right, but Red 36 does. The little cruciferous veggies are fully cooked through with crispy, brown outside layers and lots of flavor added by the bacon and garlic aioli. The Thai cauliflower with togarashi spice, nuoc cham and arugula has the right amount of heat to kick things up a notch.

The entrée menu features lobster roll, cod cakes, lobster carbonara, linguini & clams and more. The seared scallops are served with a truffle mushroom risotto. As a change to seafood, try the cashew encrusted pork, which is served over sweet potato and apple hash, with a bourbon apple sauce and haricot vert. The cashews impart tons of nutty flavor and a nice amount of crunch to the dish, and, combined with the hash and sauce, makes for the perfect seasonal dish.

If there’s room for dessert, try the crème brûlée and whipped cream for a heavenly combination of textures to top off the evening.

The delectable food in Mystic doesn’t end there. The lovely S&P Oyster Restaurant and Bar sits on the riverfront offering a front-row view of the Mystic Bridge, which you may be lucky enough to watch open and close through the large picture windows. When the weather is calm, the location at 1 Holmes St. is also prime for people-watching as they walk by or kayak past.

Chef Edgar Cobena adds a South American flair to classic New England dishes. Take for example the sea scallop ceviche served with plantain and lavosh chips or the fried oyster taquitos made with blue corn flour, yellow corn taquitos, remoulade with citrus slaw and yucca fries on the side.

S&P Oyster does the basics very well, such as their clam chowder. The rocket salad is delightful with arugula, jicama, avocado, goat cheese, grape slices, toasted pecans and a light agave white balsamic vinaigrette. A standout on the seasonal soups menu, the pumpkin bisque alone is worth the three-hour drive to Mystic. It had the ideal level of sweetness, enhanced by a drizzle of molasses and complemented by the pecan garnish. Like drinking a pumpkin pie—warm and comforting.

On the entrées list, the wood grilled salmon is crispy, while the jumbo shrimp scampi risotto is creamy and cheesy. And you can’t go wrong with the filet mignon, cooked to perfection, served beside charred broccolini and fancypants twice-baked potatoes, infused with poblano and pepper jack and singed under a broiler.

Walk across the bridge after your meal to go shopping and sightseeing in the cute historic district, where you’ll find Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream, The Spice & Tea Exchange, Tidal River Clothing, Mystic Sweet Shoppe, Bank Square Books, Vault Coffee Roasters and Mystic Pizza of Julia Roberts movie fame.

As you can see, Mystic is an underrated winter vacation destination. Sure, it may be cold, but there’s still a lot going on in this seaside village and many inviting places to warm up. There’s so much to do and so much to eat, you’ll want to extend your weekend getaway to a whole week.

10 Free CSS & JavaScript Snippets for Creating Animated Loaders

Custom loading bars offer a way for websites to update visitors using strong visuals. Sometimes a static ��loading” message isn’t always enough!

And if you want to add a custom loading bar to your website then this collection is sure to have something that’ll suit your needs.

1. Loading Bar with Counter

Nicolas Slatiner created this incredible loading bar with a top tab displaying the loading percentage. It moves along with a custom animation that can be changed using JavaScript.

But the best part is the animated bar design and the clean style. This loading bar would fit on any website and it offers an incredible user experience.

2. Light Loader

If you prefer a simpler loading spinner with a twist, then this light loader might be just what you’re looking for. It uses the starburst shape coupled with pure CSS3 animations to create a loading effect that draws the eye.

You can adjust the animation style and loading time all in CSS which is pretty neat. And the shapes are all created using CSS too so you can adjust the size, speed, and structure of the starburst icon.

3. Multi-Animated Loader

Perhaps the most complex loading feature I’ve ever seen is this circle created by Glen Cheney. It does use a few lines of JavaScript to add a show/hide feature but this isn’t required for the circle animation to work.

So you can get this thing running on your site in pure CSS3 with options to change the color, size, and speed. My favorite part of this animation is the off-kilter look where the center rotates against the outside.

It offers a really cool effect that just grabs the eye.

4. Canvas Fractal Loader

This striped fractal canvas loading icon feels like an old-school Windows screensavers. This technique uses a lot of JavaScript to make the looping effect and to keep the color transition consistent.

Even though it’s called a canvas element it does not use a canvas element on the page. Instead it’s powered by Sketch.js which is a natural canvas library. Awesome design if you like the fractal style and don’t mind toying with JavaScript to get it running on your site.

5. OuroboroCSS Loaders

The OuroboroCSS loaders are a unique creation from developer Geoffrey Crofte. These loaders are powered by pure CSS and they operate on a repeating animation cycle that gives the illusion of disappearing into the shape.

I like this design more for internal loaders rather than a full-page loader. It’s quaint and easy to spot from a distance, but not so powerful as to take up the entire page.

6. Thermometer Loader

This custom thermometer-style loader feels more like an amazing proof of progress rather than a practical element for your website. But creator Hugo Giraudel really pushed the limits of CSS with this loader moving through a number of different colors from bottom to top.

It only has three HTML elements nested inside each other and the colors and animations are all pure CSS which is breaktaking.

7. Three.js Loader

I have to throw this into the collection just because it’s so darn cool. This Three.js loader by Lennart Hase uses the free Three.js 3D library to create a rotating cube on a small surface.

The animation is controlled through JavaScript and WebGL rendering. 3D design is much more prominent on the web these days and this code snippet is proof of how much you can accomplish.

8. Organic Circle

This crazy canvas circle loader reminds me of air traffic radars or the types of blips you’ll see on submarines. It’s built entire on the HTML canvas element using ctx and JavaScript calls to create this effect from scratch.

You may not find a great way to work this into your site, but you have to admit this thing is impressive.

9. Simple Circle Rotator

Short, sweet, and to the point best describes this canvas loader. It rotates the inner circle of a canvas element infinitely with some basic JavaScript controlling the animation.

I do think this rotator is simple enough to fit onto any site and it’s pretty easy to customize too. Everything runs through JS code so you won’t even need to copy the CSS at all.

10. Pure CSS Loader Dots

Another simple yet fun example is this pure CSS loader with alternating dots moving in & out of view. It’s one of the coolest loading effects that really gets the point across without being too blatant.

You can fit this onto any page and it’s simple to setup. The dot shapes and animations run through CSS and there’s no JavaScript required.
