since the undersecretary stepped onto the rocinante with the walking powersuit all he'd heard was how he needed to do this and that. earth this. mars that. war. there wasn't enough god damned coffee on the boat for him to listen to all of it. even less so not that he'd had a little, uh, mishap with the coffee machine. it happened to look at him the wrong way after he was pissed at naomi.

and now, holden was regretting everything.

pinching the bridge of his nose, the captain shoved down every profane word that was careening through his mind. fingers clench against the thought of putting the tiny older woman in the airlock, if for no other reason than not having to listen to her babble for a few minutes. but, he was the captain. he had his moral code to hold on to.

" i really appreciate how much you need to get back to earth, i do. as soon as we're done on io we'll do our best to... " do what? everyone was going to have their guns pointed at them if someone so much as sniffed the tachi. it wasn't like they could touch down in front of the un and kick her down the ramp.

" i'm not actually sure how to finish that sentence because i don't know where to drop off diplomatic question marks. point me in the direction of safe harbor and we'll drop you off. how's that? "

a string of welsh profanity joins the movement of catching the drive being tossed his way. he listens with a clenched jaw to the name that's been the bane of his existence since the canterbury. not like he didn't think holden was a bad guy ( no matter what desiderius thought on the matter ) but he was definitely in over his head. whatever they did on that land in montana made holden grow up in the land of romance and fairytales. the real world was probably kicking his idealistic ass right about now, if it hadn't started already.

" oh, love, " a smile dredges up from the depths of his annoyance. " if you think the ideas ever stopped then you never knew me very well. "

in all seriousness, the undersecretary had been damn lucky he was already on earth trying to deal with a few legal matters regarding his child. made his appearance in this elegant hotel room in a much more timely manner and only so he could talk about james holden.

arthur rubs his brow as the digital encryption starts to unravel before his very eyes. " i've only talked to him a few times. quixotic bastard. " not as much anymore, which was a different conversation entirely. " if you give me twenty four hours i can reach out to a contact on tycho who knows him much better. mainly due to, ah, relations with one of the crew members. "

he sets the terminal to the side and slides the data chip into a small pocket sewn into his own sleeve. " what i can tell you right now is the relationship probably isn't what you're worried it is. despite all the names slung johnson's way, the guy's just trying to fix something that can't ever be fixed. he's been using holden to keep peace in the belt. guard dog of sorts. price they're paying for sanctuary on tycho from what i understand. or, what the rumor is with some of the security guys. "

A raspy chortle followed his repetition of the word, a heavy sigh following as she draped herself back against the sharp, uneven edge of the plane of metal attached to the wall that she supposed was meant to be a desk. It was one of the least used areas of the room, she imagined. "Yes, don't let a single word inflate your ego any more than it already is, and don't get any ideas in that pretty little head of yours, Arthur. I do not have the time or energy for anything other than getting to the fucking point."

She withdrew a data chip from the inside of her sleeve, tossing it to him. "Right now? I couldn't begin to say, but we can start with information. The eyes we had on the asset have been taken off the playing board, and we still don't know by who, or why -- not that I would've trusted him as far as my bony little arms could throw him." The spy hadn't been hers, to start with, and she'd trust Errinwright to give her all the information he'd gathered about as much as she'd trust a bear not to shit on her floor. "James Holden. I assume you've heard the name? Fred Johnson," spoken with a remarkably minimal amount of vitriol, "has managed to get his hooks into Holden, and I need to know why. I need to know everything. This boy fancies himself a knight in shining armor and every move he's made so far has done nothing but send more shit into the oncoming storm, even if that isn't his intention, and if he's got Fred fucking Johnson's hand up his ass puppeteering him, it's only going to get goddamn worse."
