NCT DREAM’s “We Go Up” Review + Interpretation

NCT DREAM came back this month with their song “We Go Up” on August 30, before releasing a mini album the following Monday, September 3. In this post, I’ll be writing about my opinions and interpretation of the song and music video.

    The music video for “We Go Up,” was incredibly beautiful and the color scheme was amazing. Something I really enjoyed from this music videos were some of the scenes of DREAM that was not whitewashed. Often, NCT’s stylists will apply foundation to the members’ faces that is two shades too light, in an attempt to make their skin look “beautifully pale,” and fit Korean beauty standards. This is seen the most with Lee Haechan, the tannest member of NCT overall, whose tanned and golden skin is loved and appreciated by many international fans. To see him and the other Dreamies (NCT DREAM members) unwhitewashed was very beautiful.

    Another thing that improved and shocked me this comeback was the line distribution. In NCT DREAM’s previous comeback, “GO,” the line distribution was rather decent, better than to NCT 127’s line distribution for sure, however what I noticed was that DREAM’s maknae Jisung’s lines were mainly the chorus, which didn’t allow his parts in the song to stand out and didn’t display his rap either. However, this comeback, Jisung got more lines and actually rapped. Every member really shined in this comeback, with their dancing and singing and/or rapping. Additionally, this comeback almost all DREAM members, excluding Haechan participated in writing lyrics for the mini-album.

Their come back song “We Go Up,” is seems to be talking about how the Dreamies are all growing up, specifically Mark. As, it was officially announced that the age limit for NCT DREAM was 19 years Korean age, before a member would have to graduate. DREAM’s eldest member, Mark Lee is currently 19 years old Korean age, meaning that this comeback will be his last comeback with NCT DREAM before he graduates from the sub-unit, unless changes are made. In addition to this rule, there are many hints in the song lyrics and music video pointing at this comeback as being Mark’s last DREAM comeback.

To begin, this is a screenshot of one scene in the music video. Here, Mark is watching NCT DREAM’s second eldest Huang Renjun dancing happily. Many fans, along with myself, believe that he is watching over Renjun before Renjun is passed the position as the new leader of NCT DREAM once Mark leaves.

Also, this shot of an hourglass is in the music video, right before the scene of Mark watching Renjun. The sand in the hourglass in all the bottom half, meaning there is no more time. This could be implying that Mark is running out of time, so he has to watch over Renjun before Renjun becomes leader.

Lastly, the lyrics of the song also hint at the departure of a member. There are two parts in the song referring to NCT DREAM’s title song “Chewing Gum.” In the first verse of “We Go Up,” Mark raps the lines “I rode a board and danced on it, A faster ride let’s go.” The riding on the board refers to the NCT DREAM’s iconic “Chewing Gum” performances on hoverboards. When rapping about a faster ride, Mark could mean that he has grown up from riding and dancing on hoverboards and is moving on. Later, in Jaemin’s rap during the second verse, he says, “The sweet bubble gum is all chewed up now.” I think this means that the gum is old and what happens when gum is old and chewed up? It gets spat out. This could be used as an analogy for why Mark is leaving DREAM.

Overall, I really enjoy “We Go Up,” and the whole “We Go Up,” comeback album. All DREAM members looked really happy and energized during their live performances. I really do hope that the Dreamies will win on a music award show this comeback, as their last comeback as seven. In a later blog post, I plan on writing a review and interpretation of the whole mini-album!
