Fraud siphoned billions from pandemic unemployment benefits (Washington Post) A sprawling community of victims has been caught up in a massive series of attacks targeting the nation’s generous coronavirus aid programs. The more than $5 trillion approved since the start of the pandemic has become a wellspring for criminal activity, allowing fraudsters to siphon money away from hard-hit American workers and businesses who needed the help most. The exact scope of the fraud targeting federal aid initiatives is unknown, even two years later. With unemployment benefits, however, the theft could be significant. Testifying at a little-noticed congressional hearing this spring, a top watchdog for the Labor Department estimated there could have been “at least” $163 billion in unemployment-related “overpayments,” a projection that includes wrongly paid sums as well as “significant” benefits obtained by malicious actors. So far, the United States has recaptured just over $4 billion of that, according to state workforce data furnished by the Labor Department this March. That amounts to roughly 2.4 percent of the wrongful payments, if the government’s best estimate is accurate, raising the specter that Washington may never get most of the money back.
US to spend $5B for safety as road deaths soar (AP) With upcoming data showing traffic deaths soaring, the Biden administration is steering $5 billion in federal aid to cities and localities to address the growing crisis by slowing down cars, carving out bike paths and wider sidewalks and nudging commuters to public transit. The aim will be to provide a direct infusion of federal cash to communities that pledge to promote safety for the multiple users of a roadway, particularly pedestrians and bicyclists. Federal data being released this week by the Transportation Department is expected to show another big jump in U.S. traffic deaths through 2021, reflecting continued risky driving that began with the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020. Fatalities among pedestrians and cyclists have been rising faster than those within vehicles.
Parishioners subdue gunman in fatal California church attack (AP) A man opened fire during a lunch reception at a Southern California church, killing one person and wounding five senior citizens before a pastor hit the gunman on the head with a chair and parishioners hog-tied him with electrical cords. While a motive for the shooting at the Geneva Presbyterian Church in the city of Laguna Woods was not immediately disclosed, investigators don’t believe the gunman—an Asian man in his 60s whose name was not immediately released—lives in the community. Most of the church’s members are elderly, highly educated Taiwanese immigrants.
Sweden decides to join NATO (Financial Times) Sweden will jettison 200 years of military non-alignment and apply to join Nato alongside its neighbor Finland, a move that would change the geopolitics of Europe and underscore the unintended consequences of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. In a momentous day for the Nordic nations, Finland said on Sunday that it would formally apply for Nato membership in the coming days, while the ruling Social Democrats in Sweden broke with tradition and said they would follow suit. “Europe, Sweden and the Swedish public are living a new and dangerous reality. The European security order that Sweden builds its security on is under attack,” said Magdalena Andersson, Sweden’s prime minister and Social Democrat leader. “We Social Democrats think that the best thing for Sweden’s security is that we join Nato.”
Russia has lost a third of its invasion force, U.K. intelligence says (The Week) United Kingdom military intelligence said Sunday that Russia has lost around one-third of the ground combat forces it deployed when the invasion began in February, Reuters and Al Jazeera report. U.K. intelligence also concluded that Russia’s offensive in the Donbas had “lost momentum and fallen significantly behind schedule” and that units engaged in the offensive were suffering from “low morale and reduced combat effectiveness.” Russian forces, the assessment concluded, are “unlikely to dramatically accelerate [their] rate of advance over the next 30 days.”
The West’s new fear: What if Ukraine wins? (Politico) On Sunday, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s secretary general, said, “Ukraine can win this war.” And that is exactly the problem according to a growing number of western officials and analysts who fear the fallout from what French President Emmanuel Macron called the “humiliation” of Russia. Macron is not alone. After weeks spent fretting over what would happen if Russia crushed Ukraine, Western European leaders are now worried about what might happen if Ukraine actually wins. One big concern is that a Ukrainian win could destabilize Russia, making it even more unpredictable and putting a normalization of energy links further out of reach. That’s why some western European capitals quietly favor a face-saving resolution to the conflict, even if it costs Ukraine some territory. The leaders of France, Germany and Italy are all stressing a ceasefire and peace deal at precisely the moment when Ukraine has reversed the tide. In an important column over the weekend, NYT’s Ross Douthat noted that the possibility of Ukrainian advances would make nuclear escalation “much more likely”: “We know that Russian military doctrine envisions using tactical nuclear weapons defensively, to turn the tide in a losing war. We should assume that Putin and his circle regard total defeat in Ukraine as a regime-threatening scenario. Combine those realities with a world where the Russians are suddenly being routed, their territorial gains evaporating, and you have the most nuclear-shadowed military situation since our naval blockade of Cuba in 1962.”
Shanghai aims for June 1 return to normal as COVID lockdown batters economy (Reuters) Shanghai set out plans on Monday for the end of a painful COVID-19 lockdown that has lasted more than six weeks, heavily bruising China's economy, and for the return of more normal life from June 1. In the clearest timetable yet, Deputy Mayor Zong Ming said Shanghai would reopen in stages, with movement curbs largely to remain in place until May 21 to prevent a rebound in infections, before an easing. But the announcement was met with scepticism by some Shanghai residents, who have been disappointed time and again by shifting schedules for the lifting of restrictions. "Shanghai, Shanghai ... am I still supposed to believe you?" one member of the public said on the Weibo social media platform. The full lockdown of Shanghai and COVID curbs on hundreds of millions of consumers and workers in dozens of China's cities have inflicted economic pain across a range of sectors, adding to fears the economy could shrink in the second quarter. The restrictions, increasingly out of step with the rest of the world, which has been lifting COVID rules even as infections spread, are also sending shockwaves through global supply chains and international trade.
Uyghur county in China has highest prison rate in the world (AP) Nearly one in 25 people in a county in the Uyghur heartland of China has been sentenced to prison on terrorism-related charges, in what is the highest known imprisonment rate in the world, an Associated Press review of leaked data shows. A list obtained and partially verified by the AP cites the names of more than 10,000 Uyghurs sent to prison in just Konasheher county alone, one of dozens in southern Xinjiang. In recent years, China has waged a brutal crackdown on the Uyghurs, a largely Muslim minority, which it has described as a war on terror. The list is by far the biggest to emerge to date with the names of imprisoned Uyghurs, reflecting the sheer size of a Chinese government campaign by which an estimated million or more people were swept into internment camps and prisons. It also confirms what families and rights groups have said for years: China is relying on a system of long-term incarceration to keep the Uyghurs in check, wielding the law as a weapon of repression.
Kim blasts pandemic response as North Korean outbreak surges (AP) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un criticized officials over slow medicine deliveries and mobilized the military to respond to a surge in suspected COVID-19 infections, as his nation struggled to contain a fever that has reportedly killed dozens and sickened nearly a million others in a span of three days. North Korean health authorities said Monday that eight more people died and an additional 392,920 were newly found to have feverish symptoms. That brings the death toll to 50 and illnesses to more than 1.2 million, respectively. It’s a sharp jump from six dead and 350,000 sick reported last Friday, a day after the North said that it found that an unspecified number of people in capital Pyongyang tested positive for the omicron variant. Kim has acknowledged that the fast-spreading fever, highly likely driven by COVID-19, is causing “great upheaval” in the country, and outside experts say the true scale of the outbreak is likely much bigger than what’s described in the state-controlled media.
Amid global anger, Israel says it will investigate police assault on funeral (Washington Post) Jerusalem police say they have opened an investigation into their handling of a high-profile funeral of a Palestinian American journalist, after images of its officers using batons to beat mourners sparked global condemnation. The journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran correspondent for Al Jazeera, was fatally shot Wednesday while covering an Israeli military raid in the West Bank. Witnesses, the network and Palestinian authorities said she was shot by an Israeli soldier. Israel has said that she was caught in Israeli-Palestinian crossfire and that it has not determined who killed her. The funeral in Jerusalem on Friday, for a journalist who was highly regarded for decades across the Arab world, drew thousands of people. The procession, under Palestinian flags and amid shouted slogans, was among the largest gatherings in Jerusalem in recent memory. At the start of the funeral, Israeli riot police stormed a group of mourners as they attempted to carry the coffin from a hospital in East Jerusalem to a church in the Old City. The police fired stun grenades and used batons to beat mourners and people carrying the coffin, which at one point almost fell to the ground.
Living the #ConventLife (NYT) Before she entered the Community of St. John Baptist in 2012, Claudette Monica Powell performed in an acoustic rock duo and an improv comedy troupe in Los Angeles. Now she goes by Sister Monica Clare, sings in a church choir in Mendham Township, N.J., and posts matter-of-fact videos about convent life on TikTok. On @nunsenseforthepeople, she answers questions about religious rituals (“What’s up with the ashes?”), posts animal videos and teaches her sizable audience about Episcopalian values like gender equality and inclusion. “I keep telling the other sisters, ‘Get on TikTok!’” said Sister Monica Clare, who at 56 is the youngest in her community. “‘If we’re hidden, we’re going to die out.’” Her approach isn’t altogether novel: Nuns have appeared on screens nearly since the dawn of television. Mother Mary Angelica, Mother Teresa, Sister Helen Prejean and Corita Kent have all leveraged mass media to spread messages about their spiritual and political beliefs. In 2014, an Italian Ursuline nun named Cristina Scuccia won “The Voice” in Italy and got a record deal. And, of course, there have been plenty of fictional nuns who have captured the public’s imagination. Sister Monica Clare said her first exposure to nuns came in the form of Audrey Hepburn in “The Nun’s Story.” “We’re not all grim old ladies reading the Bible,” Sister Monica Clare said. “We’re not just pious, uptight people. There’s joy and laughter, the full range of human experience.”

Zaccone and Okubo to Form Tech3 E-Racing Line-Up for the 2023 FIM Enel MotoE™ World Championship. Tech3 E-Racing is pleased to present its brand new line-up for the upcoming 2023 FIM Enel MotoE™ World Championship, as the electric series is set to expand to an eight-round, sixteen-race competition. Coming from a full season in the Moto2 World Championship with a twenty-fourth position in the standings, Italian Alessandro Zaccone, a 23-year-old native from Rimini, will return to the electric series in 2023, after his first two seasons in 2020 and 2021. Twelfth of the championship in 2020, the Italian raised the bar the following year with one victory and two podiums, at the end of which he finished fifth of the championship. Eager to race for the Italian manufacturer, he will have his eyes set on victories and the championship for his return in the category. Alongside him, Japanese Hikari Okubo will complete our 2023 line up. After several years in World Supersport, the 29-year-old native from Kodaika will begin his third consecutive year in the electric series. After closing 2021 twelfth in the standings, he improved his performances in 2022 with a sixth place in the standings and a first podium finish at the French Grand Prix. Excited to be part of the Tech3 family, the Japanese rider will look forward to fighting for wins and an even stronger position in the championship. Following two official Tests in Jerez and Barcelona scheduled in March and April, the 2023 FIM Enel MotoE™ World Championship will debut in Le Mans at the French Grand Prix, on May 12-14, 2023. Alessandro Zaccone "I am really happy to be joining Tech3 E-Racing and I can not wait to try the new Ducati bike in 2023. The MotoE championship is set to take a big step, and I am proud to be part of it. We have potential for it, so our target will be to win races and the championship next year. I would like to thank Hervé Poncharal for the opportunity, and I hope to give him the best emotions possible next season. See you next year!" Hiraki Okubo "I am very happy to join the Tech3 family in the MotoE championship for 2023. This team has a long history in Grand Prix and has had many Japanese riders throughout the years, so it is an honour to become one of them. I am looking forward to starting a new adventure next year, and we will aim to fight for wins and a strong position in the championship." Hervé Poncharal Team Manager "For its fifth year of existence, MotoE is set to make a big step in 2023 with eight events and sixteen races – two per event – so clearly it won’t be a World Cup anymore but a real World Championship, just like the three main categories of the Grand Prix Championship. A new manufacturer will support the electric series, so we are all looking forward to this new era of electric racing. Tech3 E-Racing is delighted to welcome amongst its ranks Italian Alessandro Zaccone and Japanese Hikari Okubo, who both already have experience in MotoE. Alessandro has already won a race, and Hikari has reached the podium once, so with these two high-profile riders, we will be aiming for podiums, victories, and why not the championship. We are excited to write the 2023 electric chapter with them!" Read the full article

Future Of Electric Vehicles In India
Future of electric vehicles in India:
Electric vehicles in India have opened ample business opportunities for automobile companies within the country and across the globe. The Indian automobile industry is one of the biggest industries in the world with a total amount of 46 crore vehicles. Pollution conditions in India are going worse, so the Government of India has decided to make India a 100% EV nation by 2030.
The target is way too ambitious. Even with high investments, state policies and incentives, industry stalwarts explain that India still has a long way to go.
In terms of EV connectivity, Norway has 22 %, China has 2 % and India has only .02 %. For us to talk about full connectivity by 2030 is perhaps too ambitious but 20 % by 2030 is a realistic target.
The demand for electric vehicles is increasing at a much faster rate than ever, it seems the future of electric vehicles in India is going to be superb.
Highlights:
The Indian Government has decided to make India a 100% Electric Vehicle nation by 2030.
Electric vehicles will very soon run at the cost of around 20 to 30 paise per km and can easily attain a top speed of 150km per hour.
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has decided to transfer its Ev battery technology to domestic EV manufacturers, due to this cost of EV will be cut up to 35%.
In the near future, electric vehicles will have a mileage of 700-800 Km per charge.
The government had launched the FAME India scheme way back in 2015 offering incentives on electric and hybrid electric vehicles of up to Rs 29,000 for bikes and Rs 1.38 lakh for cars
Govt. Initiatives for Electric Vehicles
Today, EV is one of the biggest opportunities that we have in India.
Indian Government plans to shift completely to zero-emission cars by 2030. India is witnessing the shift to electric mobility in par with the rest of the world. The sales of the zero-emission vehicles in India have been menial until now but with the government providing subsidies under the FAME scheme and improving charging infrastructure in various cities, the manufacturers are gearing up for the electric revolution.
This scheme is aimed at incentivizing all vehicle segments i.e. 2 wheeler, 3 wheeler auto, passenger 4 wheeler vehicle, light commercial vehicles, and buses. Under this scheme, about 99,000 hybrid/electric vehicles (xEVs) have been given direct support by way of demand incentives. The government has also approved pilot projects, charging infrastructure projects, and technological development projects aggregating to nearly 24 million dollars.
The future of mobility is clean and sustainable and it is only a matter of time that India makes a bigger splash in the global green mobility market. The World Economic Forum and Ola Electric highlighted that the Indian automobile industry is one of the fastest-growing markets globally, but it still just makes up 0.5% of the global Electric Vehicle market.
Sale of electric vehicles in India grew by 20% at 156,000 units in fiscal 2020 led largely by two-wheelers that form the bulk of the nascent industry. Electric two-wheelers sales stood at 152,000 units during the fiscal registering a 20.7% growth over last year. Electric cars accounted for 3,400 units a marginal decline from 3600 units of last year while bus sales were 600 units against 400 units in 2018-19.
The latest tender released by the government to acquire 10,000 electric vehicles was bagged by Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra. Maruti Suzuki felt left out as the company does not have even a single electric or hybrid vehicle in its lineup. Suzuki recently tied up with Toyota to manufacture electric vehicles in the nation.
Giants in the Electric vehicle industry such as Tesla & startups like CRE motors are making their way to India. These companies are interested in two & four wheelers electric vehicle markets. CRE Motors has set up a plan of 14% share acquisition in the Indian market and it also has 2% shares in the Mexico market.
In the last two years, there has been a significant development in the electric vehicle space in India with both two-wheeler and four-wheeler launches from automobile giants, local players, and startups alike.

Exceptional Qualities of Hub Motors to Improve Sales
The demand for hub motors (in-wheel) has picked up pace in recent years as they enable a single source of power for each wheel, thereby eliminating any differentials for vehicle manoeuvring. This makes the vehicle lightweight, which has been the need of the hour for the automotive industry. A vehicle that weightless is more fuel-efficient, a feature that each automaker is trying to achieve with every product. Hub motors are allowing automakers to design crash-resilient vehicles with correct weight distribution. Furthermore, hub motors (in-wheel) remove stator and rotor contact, which improves the motor life. All of these factors are expected to augment the growth of the global hub motor (in-wheel) market.
Green Initiatives Push for Higher Uptake of Hub Motors
The U.S., the EU, and countries in Asia Pacific are turning to strict sustainability norms to protect the environment from vehicular pollution. For instance, the EPA offers a zero-tailpipe emissions score with additional credits to plug-in EVs as a part of emission regulation. On the other hand, China has given EVs a zero fuel consumption value along with imposing fines on vehicles with lower fuel economy. Such initiatives have stoked the demand for hub motors as it makes a huge leap towards enabling the smoother functioning of EVs.
The demand for hub motors (in-wheel) will be intensely felt across electric bikes as their sales receive momentum. Growing use of electric bikes for personal and commercial purposes is expected to create a direct positive impact on the hub motors (in wheel) market. Furthermore, the use of electric bikes for last-mile delivery solutions amidst the rise of the e-commerce industry is also expected to make a contribution to the market.
