Soft Life, Black Girl Luxury and Consumerism
Tumblr media
Hey loves, today I want to discuss an interesting topic!
The YouTube girls have been talking, and we've been labeled! The title of choice is consumerist!
con·sum·er·ist
/kənˈso͞omərəst/
OFTEN DEROGATORY
adjective
characterized by a preoccupation with the acquisition of consumer goods.
Lets take a small dive into the soft life, clean girl and black girl luxury trend.
As a clear starting point I'd like to reference the definition of #blackgirlinluxury defined by Rokeya Rodney The Black Girl Luxury trend  - (carbonmagazine.co.uk)
"Black girl luxury shows black women doing luxurious and expensive things like go on exotic holidays, buy designer items, drive around in top of the range cars and eat at 5-star Michelin restaurants."
Lets be honest, the consumerist narrative that surrounds black girls in luxury is being drug all the way out. Luxury shouldn't be defined as how high end your hair, clothes and dining experience are. Lets be honest we've all gone to a $50 bottomless brunch at local a establishment and lived our best affordable luxurious life.

When asking one of my favorite blogs on tumblr @urtoospoiled how master the "lux" look 24/7 this what she had to say : (1) (ur name here), Urtoospoiled on Tumblr
"Can I be frank? I’m too grown to be out here pretending as if I’m ever going to be luxe all the time. Sometimes the best you’re getting out of me is a wig, lip gloss, a lil perfume and basic ass sweats. When I started from scratch, I started with buying my starting wardrobe from Pretty Girl and Rainbow (outfit, shoes even the underwear. No shame.), a synthetic wig from the beauty supply next door and Body Fantasies body mist because that was all I could afford. You couldn’t tell me I wasn’t luxe and I attracted the luxury lifestyle I now have as my playground"
While this stern response was well understood, I believe that my idea of "lux" was misunderstood. When I say I lux I mean well put together all the times. Perhaps I'm envisioning the clean girl aesthetic (who knows these days!) Please refer to exhibit A.

The classic movie "Love Don't Cost A Thing" 100% embodies my soft life and clean girl aspirations. In my opinion, successfully mastering the ability to effortlessly slay from head to toe qualifies as black girl in luxury. You must invest in yourself CONSTANTLY in order to obtain this level of femininity. As @urtoospoiled stated, "even if your items come from rainbow shop" or the like, its the constant serve that counts.
Lets address the consumerist aspect of self care
In all honesty, if you are going on massive skin care hauls on a weekly basis you may be a consumerist! Did you finish your last batch of eye cream before you traded it in for the next big thing?
