this was somewhat convincing to me; it does seem convenient that faculty should be praising amateurism while everyone is losing their jobs. the article that the twitter thread is about seems a strange one to pick on, though. its talking about how political readings fail to grapple with minor affective issues like frustration and irritation, using the example of a book about a woman of colour where she faces a number of racist ‘microaggressions’ and responds with a sort of intellectually distanced annoyance. this probably resonates with peoples real experience of the world, but we don’t have a good way of appreciating it in literature because it doesn’t imply much for us didactically compared to feelings like rage and agony and the acts that inspire them. this doesn’t seem untrue to me and connecting it to deskilling seems absurd. ‘who is allowed to appreciate minor affects like frustration in literature?’ is a crazy question to ask. our author goes on, pg 4-5:

this just seems, im sorry, profoundly stupid. this argument hinges on the “destruction” of philosophical systems resonating with the “destruction” of the enviornment (and the “destruction” of jobs) in some mystical way. but the destruction of philosophical systems is not the destruction of the enviornment. and what the anarchists would like to burn down is typically the economical-political machinery that is the author of this enviornmental destruction and the philosophical systems they take to be characteristic of it.

I find it quite strange that you say that Siyeon and Eckles' age difference is creepy, when you shipped them a lot before, even if Siyeon had owner behaviors you didn't care. What happened? Just because they didn't stay together were you able to take off the blindfold? Because, be honest with you, if they had stayed together in that toxic relationship you wouldn't be attacking the characters so much right now.

I shipped Cha Siyeon and Iklies two years ago. Back then I was still young and the implications of abuse were much more subtile and harder to pick up on as not many chapters had been translated. At that time Iklies had been presented as Cha Siyeon's only safe route, ergo everything was much more toned down otherwise the plot twist wouldn't have come as a surprise. Naively I had assumed that Iklies and Penelope would end up together and raise a rebellion together freeing the other slaves. I wasn't familiar with the problematic portrayal of slavery and colonialism that seems to be so widespread in isekai as I had not consumed many manhwas yet.

You seem to be under the assumption that liking a character = endorsing the actions of said characters and shipping a ship = wanting such relationship irl. You are wrong. Even if Callisto committed genocide and Penelope is a groomer I'm not going to come into your ask box and demand you to stop shipping them or start a bullying campaign by writing out a callout post against you. I'm of the opinion that anyone should be allowed to ship whatever they like as long as it's fiction.

But does that mean that no one is allowed to share their criticism of characters with each other? Does that make it okay to shut down the voices of those, especially poc readers, who find the implications of the author chosing to despict the colonizer with aryan features as a hero and the indigenous boy who had witnessed the genocide and enslavement of his nation by said man's hands as a villain deeply uncomfortable? I don't think so. Specifically because it's so frowned down upon to point out the flaws of the fandom faves we have readers who say with their full chest that Iklies betrayed Penelope (slaves cannot betray their master), Delman deserved to be subjected to the genocide because some of them plundered at the borders (did the women and children plunder too?) and the slaves deserved to remain in bondage because they dared to rebel against their masters and it would make Callisto look bad in front of his citizen to free them (uhm what the fuck???).

If these discussions bother you and you can't contribute without feeling the need to resort to insults and passive-aggressiveness, feel free to block the tag anti Cha Siyeon and anti Callisto Regulus or even block this blog alltogether. I bought the physical copy of vadd this summer, saw the ages and went "hey wait". Sometimes you don't notice everything at once. And I'm not all knowing. I didn't know about South Korean laws on statuatory rape when I was younger. It's also not only the age gap that was an issue but the sum of all things together.

Anyone who follows me knows that this assumption is false. I'm happy to inform you that I ship lots of dark and fucked up ships and I love to point out and analyze in what ways they are toxic to each other. For example Nai and Vash? I literally call Nai an eco fascist and wrote an entire essay how it is doubtful that Nai even loves Vash. I called episode 11 and 12 a rape allegory. It's the Vashwood/Plantcest antis that are in deep denial that Trigun features incestuous abuse and not the Plantcest shippers who will happily explain the layers of trauma caused by Nai that Vash carries within him.

I ship Derrick x og Penelope but do you see me woobyfying him or wishing they had ended up together and being mad that they didn't? Heck no. If anything I'm mad that he got away with everything and Cha Siyeon even lets him hang around her daughter. My ideal ending is Penelope shooting with her crossbow at him and setting the mansion on fire. If it's true that he fell in love with 12 y/o Penelope at first sight that would make him a pedophile. I'm being honest. Someone needs to talk about these things because I don't think that even the author was fully aware of this.

overrated. It's full of abuse apologism, dare I say pro imperialism, pro slavery, all women in this manhwa only exist to torment the mc and get their punishment while the men (only if handsome!) are forgiven

the characters are flat. We don't know anything about their likes and hobbies. Iklies at least has the excuse that as a slave he has no time or money to pursue an interest but the other male leads are nobility. They should have a life that doesn't revolve around Penelope.

Iklies being a yandere doesn’t mean his character has to be two dimensional. Yanderes are capable of following their own agenda aside from their obsession with their s/o. Let him have that.

Callisto should be executed for the genocide in Delman. If he was old enough to participate in a war, he would have been old enough to be judged for his crimes according to the law of his time. But I think even if we applied the modern law he could be tried for everything he did from age 18-23. And if someone tries to apply the insanity defense here then by that same logic he shouldn't be allowed to rule a country but send to therapy.

villains who are only complicit or have an understandable motive get harshly punished, meanwhile the main perpetrator or the one who indirectly caused this goes free (the cook loses her job, Emily, a child abuser, stays, the imperialist and enslaver gets his happy ending, the slave loses the girl he loves and is villainized for rebelling and wanting his abusers to die)

Penelope has plot armor

I’d be more interesting if she had lives left she can use up (maybe 5 for each love interest?). Adds more suspense as we’d know she’ll die but wouldn’t know when or how she would die.

Callisto/Penelope scenes seem forced. When he held his sword against her neck and called her a rat and she said she loved him I cringed so hard. Was that supposed to be romantic? Her family back in Korea used to call her a rat. So far iklies and Vinter are the only LI’s who haven’t degraded her. But Vinter is a plot device and Iklies a villain.

this has to do with personal taste: I hate the fan service (men showing their abs) and the manhwa could do better without them. This is a death/survival game. How the narrative tries to insert Callisto scenes and attempts to make them seem romantic breaks me out of the flow. It just feels misplaced.

the behaviour of some characters is inconsistent (i.e. Penelope decided to keep the abusive maid around with the excuse that no one can gurantee her if her replacement won’t be worse, but then after establishing her place in the Eckart household she decides to leave for the palace where Mr grimreaper crown prince lives, the people that ordered the assassination and hundreds of servants that no one can gurantee aren’t dangerous because they could be working for the queen. Also why did she even expect the Eckarts to help her after everything they’ve done to her. That was foolish.)

Penelope should have attempted to run away when she had nothing to lose anymore. I wonder why she never tried to go the independent route because if I remember correctly some Otome games do provide routes where you don’t necessarily need a man. (Arcana Famiglia I believe where Felicia can become a mafia boss without marrying anyone). The fastest way to end the game in Code Realize is not choosing a man and travelling the world alone. (It counts as a bad end but still). What I’m saying is it’s strange Penelope never tested out other options.

I find it hard to believe Ivonne was such a nice person when she was raised by classist and racist people. The Eckarts probably idealized her in their memories.

Cha Siyeon pursuing a degree in archeology..you won’t get a lot money and it is a scientific and academic discipline which doesn’t have a lot of practical application, I heard you have to suck up to rich people and fight a lot with rich people (who are for example annoyed to stop construction work on their factory because they could damage an important artefact or historical burial site). So if she did it to escape her rich family she’d just be at square one. I’ve heard her family has already sabotaged her life in hopes she’ll return to them (the shitty appartment for example), so choosing a field to major in that isn’t very lucrative is well maybe not a good idea. I get it she did it because it’s a subject she’s passionate about but as someone rational as her I’m not sure if it was a good decision or even in character. (debateable) If you want independence, money comes first. I’ve read yelansdicecharm‘s concept of Siyeon being a computer major and that by hacking the game to achieve a happy ending she caused the error which sucked her into the game world. I think that concept is very cool.

Genuine devotion to Penelope/Cha Siyeon vs a desperate attempt to survive and gain freedom

The outsider view of her as a strong wild person and her struggles vs her family compared to having said harsh strength used to cow and intimidate you as a slave.

Being tossed into a war at a young age and having to fight for your life everyday until you’ve risen as a feared but powerful prince vs having everything taken from you in said war and losing your only ticket out of this nightmare to its herald.

Agreed they should have interacted more. Iklies and Callisto are the only male leads that have a shared backstory (Livius war) and a motive to go at each other's throat that goes beyond "we both love the same girl". In a way they are foils. We have character A who rose to power while at the same time character B had everything taken from him. The fall of Delman marked Callisto's ascend to "heroism"and the beginning of Iklies' descent into villainy. Any good thing that happens to Callisto (be it success in politics, love or war) has an immediate negative impact on Iklies and vica versa. There is no ending where both of them could have been happy.

Making Callisto vs Iklies vs Penelope a love triangle is a huge oversimplification of their issues. Even if the circumstances prevented them from interacting much in canon a long flashback or multiple small flashbacks spread through the stories or even a side story added on that focused on both of their childhoods during the war, would have made their characters much more complex and given further context to Delman/Ioka's deep rooted resentment of each other.

unpopular opinion: Penelope’s present to Iklies should have given her a penalty. Penelope gives Iklies a necklace. In the ancient Capria continent only the best warriors could wear ivory ornaments. So isn’t it disrespectful towards Iklies’ culture to give him something only to be worn by those who have earned the right and honour through formal recognition by their people? Iklies has not won the hunting competition, the necklace should not go to him.

By giving Penelope Iklies something so precious that has to be earned, something that money couldn’t buy she is cheapen the victory and by that she is cheapen the value of the gift. Besides Iklies didn’t know she won it under danger of her own life. The hunting competition was just meant to be an event where you shot a few bunnies and get a prize. In comparision to what Delman’s have to do to get in possession of this treasure it almost comes across as mockery. Not to mention the hunting competition is meant to show the superiority of the Eorka Empire over the countries they have conquered and oppressed.

Additionally the way the gift was delivered was incredibly disrespectful. Penelope leaves and doesn’t even bother to say goodbye to Iklies. She comes back, doesn’t welcome him, ignores him for a few days. She waits until it rains to greet Iklies with an umbrella as if she cared and then gives him a present that appropriates his own culture while she proudly explains the meaning to him as if Iklies isn’t a native born there, If I were Iklies I’d be pissed off. When asked why she didn’t say goodbye or if she’d free him from slavery like she promised, Penelope dodges his questions and just hands over the present and basically forces him to accept/open it.

Penelope's and Siyeon's adoptive families literally abused her,starved her and neglected her. Yet people used the excuse:"They just haven't opened their hearts to her and are struggling about how to express their true feelings to her". Ok sound like BULLSHIT

Like WTF??!!! They acted horrible and abusive to her so what's this about not expressing their "true feelings" ? I've seen cases of tsundere but this ain't about someone in denial or struggling with how they truly feel,this is about bastards who objectified a poor girl due to their oversized ego and mysogynistic morals, bastards who think a girl just need pretty stuff as apologies

vadd really seems to be full of abuse apologism and the readers eat that up. I'm concerned that the majority of them doesnt question anything and just accepts what the narrative presents to them. Critical thinking skills? Never heard of them. It's like they can't form their own opinion. Comment sections of Isekai manhwas all look the same as if they were AI generated. Anyone who doesn't echo the same opinion gets shut down quickly. They don't want a realistic portrayal of abuse survivors. If there's one they'll get frustrated or start to victim blame. *cough* I'll twist the neck of a sweet dog *cough*

When I first read vadd I was happy that the abuse was so severe because it would mean there was no way the author would find a way to excuse this kind of behaviour. It looked really like we were getting a revenge story. Imagine my disappointment when I got spoilered. You can't defend the duchy by saying it was just a misunderstanding. Calling Penelope slurs, denying her an education, isolating her from a social life, locking her up, starving her because she threw a tauntrum isn't being tsundere it's straight up abuse.

I have no problem if the vadd fandom simps for an abusive fictional character as long as they know what they do is abuse, but calling Penelope paranoid and partly guilty of the abuse as well is horrifying. How would the same readers react to an irl abuse case if they think the Eckarts behaviour is no big deal? I have the suspicion they only insist on the abuse being a misunderstanding because they think they are not allowed to simp for problematic characters if they aren't morally pure/misunderstood hence why they seek to justify their crimes somehow (hardcore Callisto stans are the greatest offenders here).
