Doctor Strange and the first serial story (1963, 13 issues)
First, let's cover two standalone issues that predate the serial arc.
In MEH “The Demon’s Disciple!” Strange duels another magician who calls himself the Demon. It’s a classic case of good beams vs evil beams. I was hoping to attain a greater understanding of black magic as I read more Doctor Strange stories, but I actually understand less as of this issue - previously Strange said that the hoary hosts of Hoggoth would not help the cause of evildoers, yet the Demon himself is able to command them for clearly evil-aligned purposes. As usual, the bold coloring and loony shapes of magical effects are the saving grace for this Dr. Strange issue.
The plot of BAD “Beware... Tiboro, the Tyrant of the Sixth Dimension” is basically the same as “Beyond the Purple Veil”: artifact sucks people inside, Strange ventures inside, inside of artifact is another dimension with evil sorcerer, Strange duels evil sorcerer, Strange spares evil sorcerer in exchange for the safe return of those abducted.

And now for the first serial story
I thought this was a two-parter… and then a three-parter… and then it just kept going. Not only was I thoroughly surprised by each cliffhanger, I thought the story was pretty good too - a marked improvement over prior Dr. Strange issues whose storytelling quality is, uh, variable. The only issue in this series I had major gripes with was the second one, “The Hunter and the Hunted!”, since it takes place in Hong Kong and therefore had an astonishing amount of visually racist depictions whenever it portrayed a crowd of people (also there was weird gibberish in place of actual writing on street signs and suchlike).
In “The Defeat of Dr. Strange” Dormammu makes his return. (He doesn’t debut until page 4, but you can guess it early since the mysterious being that has empowered Mordo communes w him thru apertures hanging in the air, a common feature of the dark world(s) the immortal sorcerer rules over)
Mordo overpowers Strange and the Ancient One, which immediately makes this way more interesting than most Dr. Strange stories, and makes this one of the rare issues with a “watch the hero get defeated!!” title that isn’t a lie.
Thruout the next several issues, Mordo hunts Strange across the globe, both using an extensive web of contacts and weaker one-or-two-spell magicians, as well as ethereal netherworld wraiths.
The major problem prior Dr. Strange stories have faced is that we don’t really know the limits of magic, but this series almost completely avoids that problem.
Both parties heavily rely on what prior issues have established as “ordinary techniques” for masters of black magic - hypnosis/puppeteering/other mental manipulations, projecting into ethereal forms that can cross great distances at extreme speed, and firing energy blasts. Usually, energy blast battles always end in Strange’s favor, but the very first issue drives home that Strange will never win a blast battle until he discovers that Dormammu is aiding Mordo and then somehow severs that connection, which does wonders for the pacing and stakes of the plot.
Mordo becomes so overconfident that instead of resorting to more exotic spells, the only new ability he demonstrates is the summoning of his wraiths, which work by the same ‘physics’ as the magicians’ ethereal forms (very fast, phase thru all objects, only visible to sorcerers or other ethereals, etc.).
Strange relies on his amulet, as ever, but since Mordo and Dormammu together are too powerful for it to overwhelm and he seems to have exhausted most of its “juice”, he can only use its well-established functions: emitting rays that unnerve and pain evildoers, and assisting in remote viewing.
Strange also deploys three new(ish) techniques over the course of this series, but they’re clearly derivative of his prior abilities, his regular usage of them makes it possible to understand their strengths and limitations, and as he gets exhausted and outmanned those limitations do come into play: he uses his amulet as a “flashbang” to stun and blind evildoers, he splits into several mirror images and runs away, and he uses a combination of illusory magic and good ol’-fashioned misdirection to lure assailants into sucker punching range.
The sucker punching technique is so important to raising the tension. Strange has almost never had to throw hands; his increasing reliance on it paints him as an increasingly-outclassed underdog. More than that, eventually his opponents become wise to his obvious illusions, and he becomes increasingly reliant on real cleverness. Some of my favorite clever moments include:
Buying an airline ticket, hanging out at a seaport to make Mordo & co. think he’s chartering a boat, dressing up as one of Mordo’s wraiths so his ethereal form will look like one of them, and using it to tell the rest that Strange isn’t on the plane to buy time.
Strange realizes Mordo has taken over his sanctum, so he visits a costume shop to dress up as one of the loony dunderheads that keeps harassing Strange for being an openly practicing magician, and thereby gets Mordo to lower his guard:
There’s even a much-needed break in the otherwise continually-rising action. In “A Nameless Land, a Timeless Time!” Strange escapes annihilation by hurling himself thru the dimensions...
...lands in another dimension, trivially liberates its people from a despotic sorceress (providing a much-needed reminder that he’s not weak, just currently on the ropes), then marshals his strength for the return to Earth.
Mordo and Strange’s battle in “Earth Be My Battleground!” is another variation on the time-honored tradition of an ethereal form running battle thru wondrous scenery, albeit this time entirely reliant on vistas native to the Earth dimension.
Strange finally learns from the fevered whisperings of the Ancient One’s comatose form that he must find “Eternity”. He spends several issues looking for whatever that is by consulting sages across the globe, but after this search endangers his life several times and gets him trapped in a demon dimension he decides to just pluck the answer out of the Ancient One’s mind. The story here reverts to sorcerers throwing arbitrary spells at each other until someone wins for no clear reason other than that it would facilitate the plot, which is disappointing. At least the mind battle between Strange and the Ancient One’s reflexive defenses is visually entertaining.
Eternity is unwilling to lend Strange more power, as he already has the capacity to defeat Dormammu and Mordo should he simply be "clever and wise" about it.
In the end, being “clever and wise” apparently means “doing judo”. Like, he was wise about insulting Mordo during their beam battle to throw him off his game, but when it comes down to the brawl between Dormammu and Strange it’s literally just fisticuffs with eldritch knuckle dusters in the ring of interdimensional honor.
Dormammu eventually loses, obviously, and so vows not to harm the Earth, witnessed by a peerage of his fellow planar lords. The series ends w Mordo’s lackeys planting a bomb in Strange’s sanctum.
All in all, this arc had some low moments (the frequent cutaways to the nameless woman of the Dark Dimension doing literally nothing except observing events depicted on other panels was particularly irritating) but Strange is an exciting hero to watch whenever he’s doing anything other than magic beam battles, and Dormammu is a makes for a fun villain as well. The way he tilts after being bested by judo not once, not twice, but three times is especially great:
“I totally didn’t lose, I punished one of my own citizens, that means I won. I totally won. The increasing density of exclamation points has nothing to do with my emotional state.” Bro is crying flaming tears into a tub of ice cream after all this
Anyways, as is tradition for coverage of Dr. Strange, some art. The radiation Mordo emits while at max-Dormammu power is sicknasty, complimented by the penciling on the underlayer of his attire achieving a passingly-similar look.
I will also never complain about how Dormammu looks again. Look at that diva go.
Goodness gracious why did they make Dormammu look (and walk, and gesture) like this.
Finally, side note: I remember when the first Doctor Strange movie came out people were asking why Strange had to choose between healing his hands or being a sorcerer.
Apparently it was established as a limit of sorcery all the way back in the original run.
