I'm so excited for this one!!! On the third episode of They Made It Out of Clay, Rabbi Lori Levine joins me to talk about the Jewish themes and origins of Doctor Who - did you know that both of its creators, Sydney Newman & Verity Lambert, were Jewish? Listen here!

Hartnell got along with Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert, both of whom were Jewish; he grew a huge fondness for Carole Ann Ford, who is also Jewish; he had a close friendship for Waris Hussein, who is Asian and gay; and Hartnell also had a fondness for African American singer Paul Robeson; William Hartnell appears remarkably ‘multicultural’ and ahead of his time.

As someone who is rather fond of the William Hartnell era I remember being quite shocked when I first read that WH was antisemitic and racist. While there may be some truth in these claims, I think that they've been wildly exaggerated. Hartnell got along with Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert, both of whom were Jewish, and got along with Carole Ann Ford, who is also Jewish; Ford has always spoken of the warm affection between her and Bill, that she has defended him from the allegations.
Yes, I’ve heard Carole Ann Ford talking about her time on Doctor Who and about Hartnell, and I agree with you. From what I’ve heard from her, she only seemed to have nice things to say and I think that she had quite a close relationship with Hartnell, so I don’t imagine for a moment that Hartnell would have had anything against working with someone Jewish. Hartnell even served during the Second World War before he suffered a nervous break down after eighteen months.

I was surprised, but not totally so. Again, it’s a matter of time period and age. People were a bit more politically incorrect back then. The claims probably have been, if not exaggerated, altered due to it being several years after the events in question because that’s what the brain does, makes it difficult to remember something as it happened years ago. It is nice to know he got along so well with people of backgrounds he supposedly held negative views towards, so that does put the claims into a certain amount of question.
