When you make a movie or limited series to try to reboot a beloved TV show, it should have an ending that leaves the audience feeling good. It should not:

Undo all the progress/growth you leave the characters with at the end of the original show

Brush over questions that clearly should have been dealt with in the interim space but aren’t because the writers haven’t put the time or energy into them

Kill off fan favourites for shock factor

Treat the end of your movie/limited series like a season finale that is expected to continue with cliffhangers

It should be a gift to the fans who stuck it out with you, and who in turn may very well rally around your cause and spark new interest in a reboot. It shouldn’t be a big middle finger to us.

If I had a nickel for every beloved show that destroyed its fandom by having an extremely bad delayed fourth season, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.

I’ve been rewatching Veronica Mars and my mum has slowly started to watch it with me more and more. We’re now on season 2 episode 1 and she’s just told me she prefers Duncan over Logan. C’mon now bestie…..

VM Franchise:Amateurs and professionals upside down

Fics on AO3 making Logan Echolls a good guy:he becomes a philanthropist in ways that showcase character development(getting into a position of power and prestige and using it to help the same kind of poor people he screwed up in his youth and/or using it to fight the corrupt elite) or that faced the same struggles as his(abused kids). Besides,he gets to make genuine connections - including people with good moral compasses - and making efforts into not being the same old jackass and is a much healthier person overall.

Canon VM making Logan Echolls a good guy:hE's iN the ArMeD fOrCeS bEcAuSe iT sTaNdS a ChAnCe To HeLp PeOpLe(but there are no hard calls,much less a corrupt elite using it to get even more money and power) aNd rIdEs a bYcYcLe(never mind that all kinds of pollution are much more complex problems than that). To the writers' credit,tho,Logan is shown as struggling with trauma and mental health. But he doesn't grapple with the ethics of whatever he's doing.

Even that could be interesting,tho. The contrasts between Logan's being nicer and healthier but still morally apathetic and ruthless,and between Veronica's leaving a clean but morally bankrupt lawyering firm to dig up the dirt in Neptune "accepting the mud and the tendency [she] has the tendency to find [herself] rolling in it" while Logan gets to be on an ultra-dangerous version of said lawyering job and not giving a shit about/learning to ignore the unsavory bits about his service(bonus points if he bonds and takes care of his fellow officers and subordinates in the battlefield but still is morally apathetic about everything else). That would've been a more believable source of conflict between Logan and Veronica in s4 without butchering either character,IMO. Alternatively,he has a similar arc to Veronica's - using the Navy to run away from the clusterfuck that's Neptune(bonus points if he imagines the armed forces as flawless because of his veteran grandpa),finds out the Navy has a very rotten side and becomes disillusioned with the whole thing. However,unlike Veronica,Logan fights the corruption on the inside. Perhaps,there's even a spin-off focusing on Logan Echolls fighting corruption in the Navy AND honouring the good people inside it,not to mention it's importance and grey areas.

This is what Riverdale should have been the whole time. Season 1 was a very competent whodunnit murder mystery and then from season 2 onward it just kept getting more and more ridiculous. And the thing that makes it most ridiculous though - they always lean a little bit into how “oh it’s demons, oh it’s flying babies, oh it’s magical cults, everyone’s disappearing” but then they always explain it away like “well actually it was all just jingle jangle and it was the special paint they were using in the school and he didn’t come back from the dead, it’s actually his secret cousin’s twin who we just found out about who looks exactly like him”. With this miniseries, it’s like "La Llorona shows up, yeah the devil shows up, yeah ghosts are real, Sabrina’s real, magic’s real" it was actually like almost more believable because in a world today where everything’s superheroes and vampires and werewolves I kind of wish Riverdale was just that. The fact that they’ve been trying to keep everything realistic just makes it more ridiculous. Like I kind of wish it was just like “yeah demons are real dude” it makes it so much more easy to digest.

I'm so late to the party but I finally watched S1-3 of Veronica Mars and OMG it was so good! I don't know how I missed that show years ago. Anyway some VM posts incoming but I have seen the discourse online and I will not be watching S4 so that I can end it on a good note.
