I finished reading Out of Time, Into You by Jay Bell, and for a while it would’ve been my favourite book of all time (at least until the solangelo book comes out next year). And maybe it is.
The idea is amazing, and how it’s used to explore struggles of gay and black people in the 50’s is so good. Reggie and Daniel are perfect, actual soulmates, I was addicted to them. I had to put the book down multiple times cause their cuteness was too overwhelming. And the vintage references; the cars, the music, the fashion (tighty whities!!!), even the easier financial situations.
Honestly it could've stopped at Chapter 15 and it would've been the perfect book for me. But then the ending... ugh. Grrrr, it made me so freaking upset. I get why it happened, especially with the dangers of the time period and the pair were trying to avoid it. I was expecting a bittersweet ending but those only work when there isn’t any other way, and if it isn’t disregarded earlier. Here, there were plenty of solutions instead of the one we got. It felt like a downgrade, like Wizard of Oz almost. It could’ve been even worse, but I wish I could forget it.
I wanna write my own ending where they both stay in the 50's, be trailblazers while living in peace and quiet, with it being Reggie's destiny to go back in time in a time loop. There could've been so many better ways to end it, it could've been worse, but didn't need to rip my heart out and crush it forever. Maybe I'm just romanticizing an era for it's fashion and music, but in my mind, they're still living happily together in the 50's.
