George Welsh, who coached football at Virginia for 19 years and retired as the Atlantic Coast Conference's career victories leader, has died.
The school made the announcement in a release Friday, saying Welsh's family says he died peacefully in Charlottesville on Wednesday. He was 85.
Welsh compiled a 134-86-3 record at Virginia from 1982-2000. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
A former quarterback at Navy, Welsh took over a Cavaliers program that had had just two winning seasons in 29 years. He guided Virginia to an 8-2-2 record in his third season, which ended with the school's first appearance in a bowl game. Virginia went to bowl games 11 more times during his tenure.
Welsh also coached at Navy from 1973-81, compiling a 55-46-1 record.

Among the numbers to remember from the Belk Bowl, these stand out for the University of Virginia: 14 plays, 90 yards, 8:10 of playing time for a touchdown that gave the Cavaliers a 14-0 lead over South Carolina in the second quarter.
It was the most time-consuming drive in Virginia’s bowl history.
In the moment, that was important. But what the drive represents is more important than just a moment in a bowl game to close out the 2018 season.
The drive, along with Virginia’s 28-0 victory, has the potential to be more significant for 2019, and perhaps beyond.
It’s still too early to say the Cavaliers have “arrived.” But if the victory over South Carolina, a 7-5 team out of the highly touted SEC, is any indication, the Cavaliers are at least on their way.
“Significantly closer,” Mendenhall said. “When you play late in the year with high-stakes games, that requires a different level of performance, maturity and execution . . . and when you put it in contrast to a year ago, it can’t be more striking, in this one-game setting. That’s a giant step forward.”
A year ago, Virginia played Navy in the Military Bowl and was blown out 49-7.
Virginia has gone from 2-10 in 2016, Mendenhall’s first year with the Cavaliers, to 6-7 in 2017 to 8-5 with a bowl victory.
Things seem to be coming together.
