Medallia acquires voice-to-text specialist Voci Technologies for $59M
M&A has largely slowed down in the current market, but there remain pockets of activity when the timing and price are right. Today, Medallia — a customer experience platform that scans online reviews, social media, and other sources to provide better insights into what a company is doing right and wrong and what needs to get addressed — announced that it would acquire Voci Technologies, a speech-to-text startup, for $59 million in cash.
Medallia plans to integrate the startup’s AI technology so that voice-based interactions — for example from calls into call centers — can be part of the data crunched by its analytics platform. Despite the rise of social media, messaging channels, and (currently) a shift for people to do a lot more online, voice still accounts for the majority of customer interactions for a business, so this is an important area for Medallia to tackle.
“Voci transcribes 100% of live and recorded calls into text that can be analyzed quickly to determine customer satisfaction, adding a powerful set of signals to the Medallia Experience Cloud,” said Leslie Stretch, president and CEO of Medallia, in a statement. “At the same time, Voci enables call analysis moments after each interaction has completed, optimizing every aspect of call center operations securely. Especially important as virtual and remote contact center operations take shape.”
While there are a lot of speech-to-text offerings in the market today, the key with Voci is that it is able to discern a number of other details in the call, including emotion, gender, sentiment, and voice biometric identity. It’s also able to filter out personal identifiable information to ensure more privacy around using the data for further analytics.
Voci started life as a spinout from Carnegie Mellon University (its three founders were all PhDs from the school), and it had raised a total of about $18 million from investors that included Grotech Ventures, Harbert Growth Parnters, and the university itself. It was last valued at $28 million in March 2018 (during a Series B raise), meaning that today’s acquisition was slightly more than double that value.
The company seems to have been on an upswing with its business. Voci has to date processed some 2 billion minutes of speech, and in January, the company published some momentum numbers that said bookings had grown some 63% in the last quarter, boosted by contact center customers.
In addition to contact centers, the company catered to companies in finance, healthcare, insurance and others areas of business process outsourcing, although it does not disclose names. As with all companies and organizations that have products that cater to offering services remotely, Voci has seen stronger demand for its business in recent weeks, at a time when many have curtailed physical contact due to COVID-19-related movement restrictions.
“Our whole company is delighted to be joining forces with experience management leader Medallia. We are thrilled that Voci’s powerful speech to text capabilities will become part of Medallia Experience Cloud,” said Mike Coney, CEO of Voci, in a statement. “The consolidation of all contact center signals with video, survey and other critical feedback is a game changer for the industry.”
It’s not clear whether Voci had been trying to raise money in the last few months, or if this was a proactive approach from Medallia. But more generally, M&A has found itself in a particularly key position in the world of tech: startups are finding it more challenging right now to raise money, and one big question has been whether that will lead to more hail-mary-style M&A plays, as one route for promising businesses and technologies to avoid shutting down altogether.
For its part, Medallia, which went public in July 2019 after raising money from the likes of Sequoia, has seen its stock hit like the rest of the market in recent weeks. Its current market cap is at around $2.8 billion, just $400 million more than its last private valuation.
The deal is expected to close in May 2020, Medallia said.

The Galaxy,for the first time,seems to be at peace: the Republic and Empire have reached a stall and acceptable agreements and both of them are not pinching and nabbing at each other too much. This is also thanks to the just-ended great war, lasting the incredible short period of 5 years, which had ended with a large-scale schism of the Sith order that destabilized the Empire. There are those who say the Sith "rebels" were supported by the Republic, some say they were headed by a Sith lord with powers comparable or even higher than the Emperor himself. The fact is that now the intergalactic forces are more or less in peace. [Characters introductions here]
The scene opens with a Chiss pilot in space. Janos has just finished one of his regular smuggling jobs and he's relaxing while the most recent member of his "one man crew" is being the paranoid of the bunch and he's checking the ship for any evidence or problems that might have happened during the mission. They receive a call on holo from a "private number" basically, and Janos, before letting his "co-pilot" paranoid human hacker answer, checks from where it arrives. It's from Korriban. "AH. EXCELLENT". They are a bit on the defensive but Jaydkan,the hacker knowns as "cresto", or hacker, or paranoid, or simply J says that "curiosity makes him curious" (he's a hacker, not a poet) and they respond. It is a rattataki that calls Janos by name (OK) and tells him that it is the apprentice of his "employer" (GREAT) and that has a job for him, perhaps the last "mandatory" one (actual good), and she basically wants me to pick up two Night Sisters( G L O R I U O S) and a couple of jedi ( SPEC TA CU LAR) to help her Master in a thing. "ah ok, so now I'm taxi service". Of course I accept, I do not have the right to refuse, and I head to the coordinates. The scene moves to the Night Sisters, who are briefly informed about the matter by teh same rattataki woman, even if they already knew what they had to do and they get informed about who and where and when they will be taken to do such work. Madea and Winter are of few words and many facts so when the "taxi" arrives, they introduce themselves - more or less- and they go quietly in their ""lodgings"" on the ship to meditate. New change of scene and we are on Typhon, known planet of jedi temples. Three jedi are digging and working in an archeologic site when one of the three, Sa'Vin, recieves an holo call. From a "private number" She moves away from the tent and answers, finding the same rattataki as before. But she knows her by name ("Tiraka"), and knows who she is and who her Master is, as she had had "dealings" with him in the past. There is a strenuous conversation where Tiraka asks for support from Sa'Vin, and she deduces that it must be a great deal if it is her and not her Master who calls for help. The sith apprentice confirms the situation it's as such. With a sigh, Sa'vin accepts the caller's request for help and closes the call, speaking soon after privately with her padawan Milisendis asking if she would feel comfortable doing a "special" mission. The Miraluka girl seems to be interested academically speaking and, when asked, the other Jedi, a Givin called Iad-aan, appears to be interested as well (there is a samll player-death here bcs the charcter vocie od Iad-aan made me die laughing.). Iad-Aan asks if it is an illegal thing, and when it is confirmed that it is not "technically" he lightly accepts. Sa'vin drives in speeder the two colleagues / companions to the place of randevouz for Tiraka had confirmed that she had already arranged somebody to come and get them near the place of need. The three await the ship in a open grassfield and when the said transport arrives after a a couple of hours, Iad-Aan uses the Force to "see" who is inside and percieves clearly two strong sources of Force not fully trained on but mostly Dark Ways. On the other hand, the Night Sisters perceive themselves to be observed. Landing, Janos comes down from the ship to check his "cargo" and remaining pleasantly surprised by (re)Seeing Sa'vin, cordially greeting Millisendis and remaining a little shocked by the welcoming of the Givin, makes them jump on board, urgently asking not to provoke quarrels with the other two young ladies in the ship. There is a brief chat between Janos and Sa'vin, where she asks him to use the name with which she presented herself and where she whispers that she would like to know where he had met this current employer of his (The sith master she also knows). "I could ask you the same question, Counsellor Sa'vin" "it is not obvious that i will not answer". On the ship they all meet up with a young blue twi'lek and a jawa, who is promptly threatened by Janos who warns the small alien that he is "keeping an eye on him (Zili.. Don't let it touch my droid)". It's obvious that this kind of conversation is now routine on the ship. [Sa'vins player was feeling ill so she left after this point] Before taking off, on the datapad that gave Janos the coordinates for the variosu landings a message compose itself and it suggests to ask the Nighsisters to explain the problem to the new arrivals of the ship. Janos hurriedly gets up (complaining that it could have wrote the message in the 5 seconds before i had sat down on the pilot seat) and he goes, but before he could hear the Night sisters' negative answer, he's already gone. The journey starts... without any of the main groups exchanging covnersations. We arrive at the coordinates set: a moon that looks more like a cemetery of buildings than an inhabited place, with several craters created or from large battles or frequent meteorites. When the ship docks, the landing pod blocks my supports and I find myself very frustrated at the idea of ​​not being able to just get the fuck out. The jedis and the non-Force-users get off board looking at a pyramid liek tomb, stil lwondering what we are doing there since miss onehanded -shotgun-loading-sound Madea has not told us anything about the job yet. Looking around the landing pod we see the door of a pyramidal tomb that is closed by two statues with hands and arms joined. The scavengers notice also some computers with soem data running on the screens and the hacker + twi'lek are observing with great interests the tech there: it's an automatic station for archaeological finds' analysis. J downloads a bit of the just finished analysis on the device and Yewzili pockets some various paddles. I'm like "kid don't do it" and she "it's to repay you: 3" "if you want to repay me by sicking 45 angry Siths because I stole their precious antique night vases, i'll gladly skip that" "they will never notice." While the three smuggler-type pirate things, the jedis use the Force to open the doors, after Madea said, very caustic, that their employer is literally just locked inside (janos: "AH he called us because he got stuck a tomb, this is AMAZING"). The jedi open the door of 50cm and let pass the two Night sisters in front of line, then they go in and finally the mere blaster-holders go at the rear. As soon as we get all inside, Iad-aan uses the Force again to perceive dangerous creatures and finds two or three BIG clustersof negative energy plus a more powerful one of inestimable suffering in the depths of the tomb. We assume that's out quarry. Trying to avoid the clusters of life forms perceived by the mathematical jedi, we start our descent. At the first junction we are attacked by a Kath who is severely mistreated by the force-users (Medea jumps behind him using the wall as a lever hitting his back, ian-aad splats it on the ceiling, Zili electifies it with the vibrosword and finally Medea eviscerates it while iad -aan overkills it with a Force-beheading. Janos kinda just puts away the blaster shrughing). A little further on we find another forkin the road, with both ends going downhill, and an obelisk at the center of a small opening in the cave. The jedi interact with it- in whisper - while Janos  -"feeling lucky" in whisper - gets a very bad feeling from the way on the right. Iad-aan says that the obelisk has "spoken to him" and that we must continue in the way right but "without touching the dead" - something along these lines. There is a brief pseudo-philosophical discussion between iad and medea where medea does not seem particularly inclined to speak, while janos and zili are having an heated covnersation about some potential good stored in Janos' ship that zili may or may not have"resold" or used (spoielr: it was spice. (context: spice in sw its drug basically)). In the fustration, Janos does not realize that he is walking right in the direction of the bad feeling. We arrive in a room full of stacks of skeletons and Iad-Aan assumes these are the dead not to be touched, so with nonchalance levitates wit hthe Force across the room (he's usign a lot of Force powers, he should be more careful). Madea comments caustically that "some" people REALLY like to show "how many things they can do"; the Night Sisters make show of their great agility and the others (Milisendis Zili, and J) simply walk - janos needs a few seconds before deciding to cross the room .  The "bad feeling" really gets to him- [J's player is prone to be very sleepy so he left as well at this poing] Just as we are getting out the blasted room, 6 huge and disgusting humanoids, Rakghouls, jump on us and we start a fight. Janos  -last in the line so first to be attacked- slips his entire arm into the mouth of one of these monsters as it growls and he like unloads his blaster charge in the skull of the disgusting thing, causing it to burst from within. The creature falls to the ground coem a fish without bones, ("Ah ... he bit me ç_c ...") biting janos' arm on the way down; Iad-aan unleashes his levitate to lift himself up into the cavernous room and not get caught by two of them; medea uses, according to old tactics already tried, Winter as jumping pad and twirling in the air with feline grace and shoots in the head to another of the creatures with the blaster incorporated in her mechanical arm; zili jumps back while the attack of the jedi padawan Milisendis doesn't go as good as she would have wanted. In the second round with a bit of Force pushes and blaster shots an classical Force-beheadings, we take the rest out. Medea snaps a bit of acid words to Zili ("Cowardice will not keep you alive") and we contine along the path down (zili is quite offended: "it actually works pretty good to me"). Around the corner we hear heavy steps and Mili, Yewzilin and Janos peek the corridor while Iad-Aan perceives it with Force: it is a fairly large creature known to feed on the Force + force users altogether. Janos comments that "hey, at least three of us are safe!" readily correct that they are nonetheless creatures carinvore and the Force flows in all of us. yadda yadda jedi shit. Janos promptly takes zili for an arm and literally sprints silently across the corridor to where the creature is eating some corpse or carcass. Zili does not make a sound but Janos almost slips and schatters a bone by mistake. Luckly the creature does not seem to care too much. ("DAMN IT YOU OLD MAN" Zili whispers angrly. "Ehy watch your mouth kid, the thing didn' saw us anway!!") Janos was "arguing" with Zili to use the Jawa as a distraction while Milsendis and Medea convinced Iad-aan that usinf the Force -again- to move soem rock in a far away corridoir would have not distracted the creature because it would have felt the source of the Force-usage. Some more or less sucessful sneaking made us avoid the creature complitely. We find now in front of a dor not much different from the one we met earlier and Medea with Winter brute-forcibly try to push it open (Medea: "will you others help us or not?". Janos and zili, together:"no no i think i'l lstay here watchign you two." zili:"I could watch them all day * eyes emoji *") while the jedi reuse the Push to Force it open. The initially percieved source of pain becomes it stronger once we enter the next room. [And hereby we ended the oneshot]

Heard Mentality: AI Voice Startup Helps Hear Customer Pain Points
Eleven years ago, Carnegie Mellon University alumni Anthony Gadient, Edward Lin and Rob Rutenbar were hunkered down in a garage, chowing pizza over late nights of coding. Eighteen months later, voice startup Voci emerged as a spinout from CMU.
Voci, like that of many early AI researchers, became a reality as a startup because of breakthroughs in deep neural networks paired with advances in GPU computing.
“Our academic roots are based in this idea that you can do better by taking advantage of application-specific hardware such as NVIDIA GPUs,” said Gadient, Voci’s chief strategy officer and co-founder.
Automated Speech Recognition 
Voci’s V-Blaze automated speech recognition offers real-time speech-to-text and audio analytics to analyze conversations between customers and call center representatives. The data can be used by customers to understand the sentiment and emotion of speakers.
Voci can provide customers with an open API to pipe the data into customer experience and sales applications.
Companies can use Voci to track what customers are saying about competitive products and different features offered elsewhere.
“There’s valuable data in those call center communications,” said Gadient.
AI Closes Deal
Voci’s automated speech recognition provides data to indicate how well sales representatives are handling calls, allowing companies to improve interactions with real-time feedback on best practices drawn from Voci’s metadata that drives products from analytics companies.
“Sales is very interesting in terms of understanding what message is effective and what is the reaction emotionally on the part of the potential buyer to different messaging,” he said.
Understanding the underlying emotion and sentiment is valuable for a number of these applications, said Gadient.
Voci’s customers include analytics companies such as Clairabridge, Call Journey and EpiAnalytics, which tap into the startup’s API for metadata that can highlight issues for customers.
Biometrics for Voice 
Voci is also addressing a problem that plagues automated customer service systems: caller verification. Many of these systems ask callers a handful of verification questions and then ask those same questions again if live support is required or if the call gets transferred.
Instead, Voci has developed an API for “voiceprints” that can identify people by voice, bypassing the maze of verification questions.
“Biometrics for voice is a problem worth solving, if only for our collective sanity. It enables machine verification of callers in the background instead of those maddening repeated questions you can face when handed off from operator to operator in a call center,” said Gadient.
GPU-Accelerated NLP 
Voci uses a multitude of neural networks and techniques to offer its natural language processing services. The service is offered either on premises or in the cloud and taps into NVIDIA V100 Tensor Core GPUs for inference.
For example, the company uses convolutional neural networks to process audio data and recurrent neural networks for language modeling to make predictions about text.
Developers at Voci trained their networks on more than 20,000 hours of audio from customers seeking results for their businesses.
“It took approximately one month to train the neural nets on a network of machines running a combination of NVIDIA P100 and V100 GPUs,” said Gadient.
Voci is a member of NVIDIA Inception, a virtual accelerator program that helps startups get to market faster.

Per due volte da quando il Sudan è uno stato indipendente (dal 1956, prima era sotto dominio coloniale britannico) le proteste popolari sono riuscite a rimuovere dei regimi autoritari dal governo del Paese. È possibile che ciò avvenga nuovamente grazie all’attuale contesto di agitazione sociale?
Da quasi tre settimane le proteste contro il governo di Omar al-Bashir continuano a diffondersi in tutto il Sudan. La popolazione è scesa in strada in molte città invitando il presidente a dimettersi e quindi porre fine al suo regime quasi trentennale. Anche se le proteste sono state innescate dal recente aumento del costo del pane e del carburante, esse hanno da subito fatto emergere tutta la loro carica antigovernativa, che covava nella società da ormai molti anni.
In barba alle proteste, il presidente al-Bashir rifiuta di dimettersi. Tuttavia, per lui non sono giornate facili. La portata delle attuali proteste richiama infatti due avvenimenti del passato sudanese, quando le mobilitazioni popolari seppero contribuire ad un cambio di governo.
Nel 1964 le proteste cominciarono nel momento in cui studenti e polizia si scontrarono presso l’Università di Khartoum. Lo stato di agitazione diede presto forma ad un più ampio movimento di protesta e così la dittatura militare di Ibrahim Abboud fu rovesciata.
Nel 1985, le proteste scoppiarono dopo svariati anni di crisi economica e, proprio come per le odierne sollevazioni di popolo, la miccia della rivolta è stata accesa dall’aumento dei prezzi dei beni di prima necessità. Anche in quell’anno, le mobilitazioni hanno saputo organizzarsi in un movimento dall’ampia base popolare e così facendo hanno dapprima messo in crisi e poi costretto Jafar al-Nimeiri a dimettersi.
È possibile che ciò avvenga nuovamente – una terza volta – grazie all’attuale contesto di agitazione sociale?
1) La ‘capacità resistente’ dei dittatori
Nel 1964 il presidente Abboud impiegò davvero poco tempo per confermare le proprie dimissioni. Accettò di lasciare il proprio incarico dopo appena cinque giorni di proteste. Nel 1985, invece, il presidente Nimeiri – al tempo anche malato – commise l’errore di spostarsi negli Stati Uniti proprio mentre la rivolta stava cominciando ad avere forza. Egli perse il potere dopo undici giorni di manifestazioni.
In confronto, il regime del presidente al-Bashir si sta dimostrando molto più difficile da abbattere. Sta sopravvivendo a quasi tre settimane di proteste. La strenua resistenza di Bashir è ben comprensibile: nel caso in cui perda il proprio incarico di presidente, sarà difficile per lui continuare a fuggire alle accuse (di genocidio, crimini contro l’umanità e crimini di guerra in riferimento al conflitto in Darfur) avanzate dalla Corte Penale Internazionale.
2) I movimenti armati ribelli
Sia nel 1964 che nel 1985, le insurrezioni furono condotte da coalizioni di partiti politici e sindacati prevalentemente concentrati nelle città della metà settentrionale del Sudan. I movimenti armati ribelli del Paese, allora presenti esclusivamente al sud, non furono coinvolti né in quelle alleanze che univano le opposizioni né furono presi in considerazione al momento di fondare un nuovo governo. Anzi, tutti i governi succedutisi in Sudan hanno continuato a foraggiare guerre contro le milizie del sud.
Da questo punto di vista, la secessione del Sud Sudan nel 2011 ha comportato l’uscita di scena dei ribelli meridionali. Tuttavia, la conseguenza non è stata la pacificazione del nord del Paese. Infatti, dal 1985 si erano accesi nuovi focolai di rivolta in Darfur e Sud Kordofan. Ciò che appare rilevante è che, a differenza di quanto è avvenuto nelle precedenti sollevazioni in Sudan, oggigiorno molti gruppi armati provenienti dalle regioni appena citate stanno partecipando alla mobilitazione popolare. L’influente coalizione nota come Sudan Call, ad esempio, include uno dei gruppi ribelli più influenti e grosse fazioni di spicco di altri due.
Non è ancora chiaro come ciò possa influire sulle proteste. Da un lato, la partecipazione di gruppi regionali ribelli potrebbe essere un fattore positivo, espressione dell’incontro tra le istanze di rinnovamento volute dalle milizie e dalla società civile urbana.
D’altra parte, l’inclusione di gruppi ribelli potrebbe minacciare la tenuta del movimento di protesta nella misura in cui ciò innervosisca gli elementi più conservatori dell’esercito e della classe media urbana. Su questa possibilità sta lavorando Bashir, proprio come tentò anche Nimeiri: ad ogni modo, gli sforzi di entrambi tesi a dividere le proteste non hanno portato ad importanti successi.
3) Esercito e servizi di sicurezza
Sia nel 1964 che nel 1985, l’esercito del Sudan è intervenuto per abbattere i regimi e sostenere la transizione verso una democrazia pluripartitica. Ciò è avvenuto grazie alle spinte di giovani ufficiali, rivelatesi figure fondamentali per il successo delle istanze popolari.
Ancora oggi, le forze armate rappresentano un attore di prim’ordine sullo scenario politico sudanese. Tuttavia, a differenza di quanto è avvenuto in passato, oggi non è prevedibile una comunanza di intenti tra queste ed i manifestanti. Ciò nonostante, Bashir dimostra di aver imparato dagli errori dei suoi predecessori. Egli ha creato il fortissimo National Intelligence Security Services (NISS), ed ha organizzato proprie milizie armate, spesso utilizzate per il controllo del territorio al posto dell’esercito. L’odierna marginalità politica di vari comandanti militari e la possibilità che questi siano ritenuti responsabili di crimini di guerra una volta caduto il regime, sono ragioni sufficienti per pensare che quanto accaduto nel 1964 e nel 1985 non si ripeterà. Questi possono essere anche i motivi per cui l’attuale rivolta è in grado di durare più delle mobilitazioni di decenni fa.
Le forze armate non sono però interamente compromesse con il regime ed al suo interno non tutti appoggiano Bashir. In virtù di ciò ci si potrebbe aspettare cha almeno una loro parte possa ancora dimostrarsi significativa negli sviluppi della protesta. 
Il dissenso potrebbe esplodere in vari settori delle forze armate. Alcuni esempi: recentemente ha abbandonato il proprio incarico un colonnello del Darfur, mentre si fanno strada voci per cui anche Salah Gosh del NISS o Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo delle Rapid Support Forces (RSF) potrebbero agire contro il presidente. Se le milizie più vicine a Bashir dovessero dividersi nel supporto al regime, ciò potrebbe aprire nuovi spazi di possibilità per un intervento dell’esercito, desideroso di mostrare nuovamente la propria centralità politica.
4) Gli islamisti
Quello degli islamisti è un altro gruppo importante in Sudan. Questo gruppo non ha egemonizzato le rivolte precedenti, come invece avvenne in Iran nel 1979, ma la sua presenza ha comunque influenzato gli accadimenti sudanesi.
Nel 1964, gli islamisti – tra cui vi era Hassan al-Turabi, l’ideologo dell’attuale regime – sostennero l’uscita di scena del presidente Abboud, lavorando, seppur con qualche difficoltà, con una vasta coalizione politica che includeva anche i comunisti e l’Umma. Dopo il successo della rivolta, tuttavia, le fratture tra gli islamisti e questi gruppi si approfondirono sensibilmente. Nel 1977 gli islamisti avrebbero addirittura sostenuto un nuovo regime militare.
Due settimane prima della rivolta del 1985, gli islamisti si rivoltarono contro tale governo e lo privarono della sua principale fonte di sostegno politico. Tuttavia, essi si rifiutarono di cooperare alla rivolta assieme alle altre forze dell’opposizione. Dopo la caduta del presidente Nimeiri, si sviluppò dunque molta ostilità nei confronti degli islamisti a causa del loro coinvolgimento con il precedente regime, ma questi furono ancora in grado di aumentare i loro consensi. Lo fecero cooptando le fazioni dei servizi di sicurezza, mentre divenivano sempre più potenti grazie al loro fiorente impero finanziario e mediatico. Con questo nuovo potere, il National Islamic Front (NIF) ha svolto un colpo di stato nel 1989, portando al governo l’allora colonnello al-Bashir.
Oggi, la volontà degli islamisti di rompere con il regime e abbracciare l’opposizione – e la volontà dell'opposizione di operare un riavvicinamento – potrebbe costituire un fattore cruciale nel determinare il corso della rivolta. Il gruppo degli islamisti è però molto più diviso che nel 1964 o nel 1985. Da quando il presidente al-Bashir ha espulso al-Turabi dal governo nel 1999, il movimento islamista si è infatti diviso tra il Partito del Congresso Popolare di Turabi (PCP) e il National Congress, partito di governo (PCN). Negli anni 2000, il PCP ha promosso alcuni riavvicinamenti simbolici con i vecchi avversari politici dell'opposizione, ma si è allontanato nuovamente da loro avendo accettato nel 2014 di aderire al ‘dialogo nazionale’ guidato dall’esecutivo.
Ora, a tre settimane dallo scoppio dell’attuale rivolta, il PCP ha criticato alcune misure del governo e sostiene che sta valutando la possibilità di abbandonare il parlamento, mentre altri partiti islamisti hanno già ritirato il loro sostegno al governo, in particolare Reform Now. Questo partito ha contribuito a fondare le National Forces for Change, un’alleanza delle opposizioni che include alcuni partiti non islamici, anch’essi sostenitori del regime fino a poco tempo fa. Questa coalizione, che non sembra essere completamente allineata con il resto dell’opposizione, ha comunque contribuito a sostenere la mobilitazione popolare. I suoi annunci sono stati accolti con entusiasmo dal segretario generale del Sudan Call, Minni Minnawi, mentre sono stati trattati con maggiore scetticismo dal Partito Comunista Sudanese.
Questi sviluppi suggeriscono che, mentre permane il divario tra l’opposizione islamista e quella non islamista, non è impensabile e che i gruppi islamisti possano ancora essere protagonisti di quanto avverrà bel prossimo futuro.
