Siegebreaker (Fighter Archetype)

 Before the invention of gunpowder and various other ballistic weaponry since then, siege warfare was the primary basis for military tactics, with defenders entrenched in fortifications, surrounded by the attackers, who block all access routes while delivering constant pressure with siege weapons and various tactics to try to either break in or slay the defenders through starvation or poisoning.

Believe it or not, however, sieges typically favored the defenders, since their fortifications allowed them to reduce the efforts to defend it to countering the various tactics the attackers used to get inside, while attackers had to not only try to get inside, but also  build fortifications of their own to avoid counter-assaults from outside. Also, the poorer conditions and additional workload of the atttacker’s siege camp tended to make maintaining the siege more expensive.

But enough about that. Today, we’re focusing on a specialized warrior, one specifically meant to break through lines of soldiers. It is they who are the first to rush out onto the walls from a siege tower, barreling into the defenders. Conversely, they might also play on the defender’s side, trying to punch a hole in the attacker’s ring to get people in and out.

Such siegebreakers have to not only be powerful enough to break through defensive formations, but also tough enough to survive the immediate counterassault. A soldier impaled on a set of braced pikes is not an effective siegebreaker.

 Siegebreakers are trained to use their bodies as living battering rams, pushing back or running over foes with great force. Furthermore, they also learn how to direct the force of their impact to even cause damage with such maneuvers, even adding the magic of their armor to the impact.

It takes more than a powerful blow to break through formations. One must follow through, and that means enduring enemy blows. Through a combination of adrenaline and careful minimization of injury, these warriors can briefly gain a surge of vitality.

As they grow in might, they also learn to push back and overrun a foe all in the same action, breaking through to the back of enemy lines.

A disrupted formation is a broken formation, and these fighters fight to disorient, leaving foes befuddled and ineffective.

The most powerful such warriors can hit where it hurts the most, or otherwise leave foes unable to act with their strikes, only able to stumble and crawl for cover.

Like a spike through wood, this archetype is perfect for piercing large groups of foes. However, that alone is not enough. You should build to help reduce the number of attacks of opportunity that foes can take against them by moving and using their maneuvers, as well as keeping them mobile so they don’t get surrounded and flanked.

 Even among other soldiers, members of this archetype put themselves at great risk when performing the duties they were trained for. With that in mind, one can imagine either an inordinate amount of recklessness or devotion that drives them,

  Whisked away by a teleportation spell, the party has been sent on a quest to recruit help to break the siege surrounding Aunhold. Specifically, they have been tasked with seeking out a reclusive village of nephelim who, according to legend, once served to break through the hordes of demons during the last War in Heaven.

 It is not all that uncommon for unscrupulous armies to hire on ogres as shock troops and siegebreakers, paying them in gold and spoils of war. However, the truly dangerous ones are those that choose not to retire, training in the art of scattering defenses.

 Having beaten them back to their own borders, it is time for the forces of the Genmurd Alliance to force the invaders from Volgred to surrender. However, beleaguered by enduring sieges of their own, the Alliance tasks the party with finding a way to break the siege on the border fortress early.

Bunch of dragon au doodles of Ares and Apollo!

I really wanted to do some practice sketches with Ares holding or using a sword, then had the urge to also draw Apollo as well. Honestly I love drawing her lol

Here's a quick sketch for y'all from a few days ago since I don't have anything started atm! It was four panels but this is the only important one for me lol.

🐲 Context: Volga tends to prefer dragon form during colder seasons and usually stays in Eldin Volcano where its much warmer. But sometimes he changes his mind and hogs Ares's bed while he's out and busy. The room is so small he's practically Ares's personal space heater.
