Some background first, i was hit from behind whilst stationary in traffic the other week by a works van. the damage was not too sever that i couldn't limp back home (sore and car bashed but still alive) got the other drivers details at the scene and reported the incident to my insurance company. As the accident was not my fault my insurer passed this to their dedicated Non-Fault (NF) accident claim company (i'll not name them at the moment) who in turn provided me with a hire car and collected my car to have it assessed for REPAIR. At no point was writing off the car mentioned. Then i got a call from the garage dealing with my car (NF appointed) a week later telling me of the damage and repair value and that the engineers working for the NF, different company again, were going to deem the car a write off, CAT D as i later found out. Now the fun part - the engineers have made an offer for settlement and to write off of my car, which is a good 500 below what is would cost to replace it with a like-for-like car in my local area (replace cost circa 2.8k-3k) they are adamant they will not repair my car even though the repairs would cost LESS than the write off - because the repair is too close to the market value and they can make a killing on salvage apparently. so fighting this out at the moment. NOW FOR THE QUESTION: They have advised me that should i wish to keep the car after they write it off (which i want to avoid if at all possible) i can accept the settlement and pay them a salvage fee to retain my car. This i understand as technically they buy my car when they write it off and then i have to buy it back. The problem is that they have a flat 30% !!! salvage fee which on their offer would almost negate me being able to get the repairs covered. What i really need to know is if anyone else has been in this position and if there is a maximum salvage fee they can charge - bearing in mind that this is my car to start with - and if there is any way i can make them drop this percentage. Forcing them to drop the percentage might not only let me repair the car after retaining but might also swing in favour of repair instead of write off if they cannot justify such a big payout for themselves. Any help here would be appreciated fast as i'm still bouncing between the parties here to get this resolved. In case your wondering the damage constitutes a bumper rear panel and a kink in the boot floor - VERY repairable.""

False Auto Insurance Claim Against A Friend?

A very close friend of mine received a call from his auto insurer yesterday regarding a 3rd party claim against him. According to the 3rd party, my friend hit their parked car (which was parked on the curb in front of their home), then parked his own car, went up to their house, rang their doorbell and exchanged insurance information. The 3rd party claims that this took place in a town that's more than 1 hour away from where we work and live. This allegedly happened 3 months ago. There are two major problems with this story: A- The alleged incident never happened. I carpool with my friend to and from work and was with him that night. B- The 3rd party has all of his insurance information. Could the insurance company have called the wrong person (i.e. gotten policy numbers mixed-up while processing the claim)? If not, how could a 3rd party have his insurance information? How common are fraudulent insurance claims (against another person)? And has anything similar happened to you or someone you know? My friend is a little worried because there is some minor damage to his rear bumper. We live in a major city and pretty much every 3rd car has nicks and scratches along the bumper from parking garage 'mysteries' and whatnot. Also, about 8 months ago, a young woman rear-ended us while we stationary, waiting to turn left at an intersection. I remember the first time I and my friends bolted together four wheels scrounged from a shopping cart and a wooden soapbox crate from the farmer’s market. I also remember the first time we took that crate-car to Middlesex Place Road in Pinetown, my home-town in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. It’s a road that runs for about a quarter of a mile, at a 60° angle, ending at the bottom with Winston Churchill Drive and a six-lane highway.

I remember the elemental joy of that first terrifying lurch as we went over the brow of the hill and took our feet off the asphalt. That world-slowing exhilaration is something that will never leave my memory bank. We hurtled down a road I was only six inches above, but in that moment, we were kings. Childhood is defined by moments of self-inflicted terror where the words, “this is going to be so cool” are often followed by the unsaid rule of childhood; “Don’t tell my Mom.” Oh, and obviously, “we’re going to die!”

Those were the fun days. Granted, they were the also the days of broken bones, near death collisions and head wounds, but they were ours and irreplaceable. Are we losing that?

At the VW Drive Day, held at the VW Financial Services building in Milton Keynes, I was very impressed with the set-up and the organisation of the entire event. A dozen or so bloggers and vloggers from different parts of the country had been invited to take a host of cars out for a drive, to share their thoughts, feelings and opinions on the different vehicles. Everyone has different tastes and we were all looking for and at different things, allowing VW to get a wide and honest scope of their cars, through a variety of lenses. All available through #VWBlogVlog

Over the course of the day, Jerome Smith and I drove almost every vehicle in the lot. From the Golf GTI to the Arteon I have to admit that I was lost in a sea of impressive mechanics and awesome choreographed machinery but when you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.

Frankly put, all the brands under VW have attained a level of safety that has never been seen before. Today, driving a car is as safe for the driver, passengers and pedestrians as it has ever been and more and more technology is being created, invented and implemented to keep all involved out of harm’s way. This is absolutely essential and a brilliant step in the right direction, being crucial for the ongoing development of the industry, but it is also boring.

I can’t deny it; safety may be sexy but it is also boring. The GTI, the Arteon and the Tiguan are great cars, really, really great cars.

They drive well, they handle smoothly, the pedals are sensitive, the steering is powerful and they are flawlessly created machines, but just a bit samey. However, you should have seen my reaction when I climbed into the driver’s seat of the 1981 Mk1 Scirocco or the E-Golf.

The Scirocco Mk 1 has some groovy, heritage features which I touched on in the full review here Scirocco Review.

I can almost smell the soap!

I’d forgotten about the cars I learnt to drive in. I don’t know how, but I had forgotten the Citi Golf that didn’t come with power steering and was already an old car in 2000, when I first slid behind the wheel. The Scirocco was the same, with no power steering and no easy handling. To get the clutch to work required a proper push from the entire leg, whereas to accelerate, you had to damn near floor the pedal. Howling under-steer and brakes that weren’t the sharpest in the world added to the experience and that’s when we discovered that this car had been kept in pristine working condition by the staff at VW.

This was a car that ruled in an era where there was an art or a trick to driving, where the car was an extension and you had to drive it as much with intuition as skill. I felt involved and thoroughly engaged when I was driving this beauty and that is something that I miss in modern cars. You don’t feel as involved as you did with the likes of the 1981 Scirocco.

This is not a quality that is completely lost. VW understands its industry and the people driving their cars very well. It understands what they want but also what they need and the E-Golf is a fine example of that.

I’ve never driven an electric car before and didn’t know what to expect, but this is the height of technological advancement. A first of an entire fleet of electric vehicles that VW is developing on their I.D concept car range, which includes city cars, minivans and ranges.

Firstly, electric cars are fast, powerful, terrifically efficient and silent. The Scirocco roared, while the E-Golf barely whispered but was quick with immediate torque. One of the things that we do like to discuss is how loud it is to drive a car and how easy it is to have a conversation that doesn’t involve shouting to be heard over an engine. The E-Golf is so silent that even whispers can be heard. The mechanical design of the car is different as well, so your driving style feels more evolved, basically in a ‘higher’ class.

As well as no engine noise there is a distinct lack of engine vibration, so driving along is as smooth as kayaking through water. It makes you think of the road in an entirely different fashion. It’s as safe as any other car VW have made, but there is something completely singular about how it drives and it is going to be interesting to see the evolution of driver expectation when this becomes the norm.

The Lost Executive final word

I fear that the middle children of VW, which are the breed of modern cars including saloons, hatchbacks and pickups, suffer from the same inclusion in an era where vehicles are naturally safe before they are fun. I’m not endorsing unsafe vehicles, I cannot stress that enough, but I really do miss my soapbox racing.

Design detail The wasserboxer featured a cast aluminium alloy cylinder block, cylinder heads, and pistons; and a die-forged steel flatplane crankshaft with three main bearings. The wasserboxer, as with all Volkswagen boxer engines, directly drives the three-bearing camshaft via a small steel gear on the crankshaft, and a large aluminium one on the camshaft, so there is no timing belt or timing chain. The entire mechanism is internal to the engine, so there should be no concerns regarding wear or replacements, as long as the engine oil is changed regularly. The overhead poppet valves each feature two concentric valve springs, and are operated by pushrods, with adjustable rocker arms to facilitate valve clearance adjustment. It also featured "Heron", or "bowl-in-piston" type combustion chambers - where the combustion takes place within the piston area, and not in a recess machined in the cylinder head. The cylinder banks contain cast iron cylinder liners inserted into the crankcase surrounded by a water jacket, with a "rubber lip" style head gasket, which is a very different design as compared to most engines. The top of the cylinder liners is pressed into a recessed cut-out in the cylinder heads, that are sealed with compressible metal rings, to prevent leakage. Some wasserboxers were plagued by water jacket gasket failures (often erroneously referred to as head gaskets) due to several design issues. Engine failure was also a result of poorly placed sensors, corrosion in the cooling system, and many areas subjected to leaks. This engine is representative of the fact that boxer four cylinders produce an audible low pitch "rumble", rather than a high pitch buzz/whine, when running. Some find this aspect of the engine to be pleasing, owing to the dislike[citation needed] of the "sewing machine" sound of inline-four engines. The switch to water-cooling for the boxer engines was made mid-year in 1982, because Volkswagen could no longer make the air-cooled engines meet emissions standards. (The previous generation Volkswagen Type 2 (T2), currently produced in Brazil, was changed to water-cooled engines since 23 December 2005 in response to Brazil's emission laws; the power plant used in the previous-generation T2 is an Audi-sourced inline four.)
