Volkswagen - is one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. The company was founded in 1937 by the German Labor Front.
Fact 1. The big role of Porsche
Volkswagen's success would not have been possible without the skill and talent of Ferdinand Porsche. He was one of the most talented designers and engineers of his time. Porsche's legendary status in the automotive industry is well documented. According to Wikipedia, it took him only 10 months to create a working prototype of the first Volkswagen car.
Fact 2. The beetle was not a beetle
VW Beetle embodies the term "people's car", which is a translation of its name. Nevertheless, over the 65 years that the car was on the assembly line, it had several names. The first ever people's car was called Type 1. It was the model that brought Volkswagen to life.
Fact 3. The dictator's brainchild
Hitler wanted an affordable mode of transport that the family could use. The car also had to reach a speed of at least 100 km/h. Hitler instructed that the car should not cost more than a motorcycle, which at that time was a means of transportation for many Germans. Meeting all these conditions was a huge challenge, but it laid a solid foundation for the company's success. ( ❗ The content of the fact does not contain propaganda of fascism and Nazism/idealization of Hitler❗).
Fact 4. They don't just make cars
It's not always about cars for Volkswagen. According to MSN, Volkswagen has invested heavily in engine technology. They produce marine diesel engines for motor boats. The company also produces chemical reactors, steam turbines, gas and turbochargers.
Fact 5. Bug Advertising
Volkswagen was trying to sell cars to the American market, in whose collective consciousness the memory of the war was still fresh. What did the company do? They were honest with their product offerings and detailed what to expect from their cars. The title of the copy read: "Introducing the slowest fastback in America." This bright headline was enough to attract someone's attention.
Fact 6. Golf emerged from the ashes of Beetle
Golf was born due to the decline in Beetle revenues. According to the company, the Golf is Volkswagen's most successful car to date, having sold more than 29 million copies worldwide.
Fact 7. The first in the world
Volkswagen is the largest car manufacturer in the world in terms of sales. According to statista.com , Volkswagen sold 10.7 million cars in 2017. That's 300,000 more cars than Toyota, which has dominated the global automotive market for the past decade.
Fact 8. Wrestling in America
The two-year emissions scandal has undone much of the progress they've made over the years. It will take a lot of effort to convince Americans to trust Volkswagen, despite its global success.
Fact 9. Wolfsburg - House
Wolfsburg is home to several German car brands, but it is Volkswagen that stands out from the rest. It is also the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturing plant. The factory produced more than 70,000 units of E-Golf.
Fact 10. Their cars are named after ocean currents
Volkswagen has a long history of naming its cars after ocean currents. Examples of such names include Jetta, Corrado, Vento, Passat, Santana and Scirocco. For example, Passat is the German name for wind.
Fact 11. An amazing record
What comes to mind when you hear people talking about Beetle? Its compact size is definitely one of the first things. The mountaineering team decided to accept the challenge. The car was able to accommodate 57 people. How is this even possible when they are known for barely being able to accommodate five people? Never underestimate the power of Beetle!
Fact 12. China
In 2017, the automaker sold 3.18 million cars in China, which is almost half of their global market.
Fact 13. The fastest car in the world
The fastest production car in the world is a Volkswagen car, and this car is a Bugatti Chiron. The car is equipped with an 8.0-liter w16 engine with a four-cylinder turbo, which can produce up to 1,497 hp. The car has a limited maximum speed of 430 km / h and can go from 0 to 100 in 2.4 seconds.
Fact 14. Volkswagen vs. Toyota
Volkswagen managed to surpass Toyota, no matter what. In 2016, the company sold more than 10 million units, which is slightly more than Toyota managed to sell in the same time period.
Fact 15. For one day they were the most valuable company on Earth
For one day, the Volkswagen Group was the most valuable company on earth. According to the Washington Post, it happened on October 29, 2008. The company's value that day exceeded $350 billion. According to investment analysts, there were fewer stocks available for purchase than those that were bought.
Fact 16. Loss of 5 million dollars from each Bugatti Veyron sold
Its base price is $1.5 million. This raises the question of how it is possible that Volkswagen could lose $5 million on the sale of Bugatti Veyron. A Bernstein Research report was published, which emphasizes that the high cost of research and development was one of the main reasons. Another factor is volume, since less than 50 units were produced.

Wolfsburg (30. Januar 2019).

Brexit impact on UK car industry
Rather than creating post after post about news of yet more job losses in the UK car industry, I decided to create one entry and keep it periodically updated. Before the EU referendum, experts unanimously agreed that if the UK was to leave the EU it would result in job loses under all scenarios. A so called “hard Brexit” probably resulting in pretty much the end of all UK based industry.

2019-06-05: Ford planning to close Bridgend plant, putting 1,700 jobs at risk (The Guardian)
... tbc
_ Note: This list shows jobs created in the EU as well as the ones lost in the UK. As the timeline shows, hiring people in one location is often followed by layoffs in the UK a year later. Thereby giving a pretty good indication of things to come.  For example, if JLR is hiring 3000 people in Austria and 2800 in Slovakia, and the Halewood plant just happens to employ around 6000 people, you do the maths.

VW inicia produção da Golf 8 Variant e completa gama do hatch alemão
Tumblr media

From the very first day that Martin Winterkorn became the new Chief Executive of Volkswagen AG he has made it clear that he means business. And just last month, he has ordered the scrapping of the scheduled preview of the new Passat in Germany's capital not because of mechanical problem, electrical problem not even parts problem say defective VW ball joints but for the reason that he was not satisfied with the look and feel of the Passat. Winterkorn said, "I don't like to present car before it's finished. That's why I canceled the Berlin showing."
For those who are not familiar with Winterkorn, he is the former Chief of Volkswagen's luxury unit, Audi. And tomorrow at the company's annual press conference, Winterkorn will finally discuss his plans for the Volkswagen brand.
The Volkswagen brand was primarily the reason why Winterkorn was placed as the new CEO of VW. It should be noted that Winterkorn was the man responsible for the remarkable turnaround of Audi and VW top brass feels that Winterkorn can do the same magic on the VW brand which has been losing hundreds of millions of euros at its German factories since 2005.
When Winterkorn assumes the CEO position in VW he also brought with him his entourage of loyal subjects from Audi which he rationalize by saying that his Audi design team can get the job done quickly.
According to Peter Braendle fund manager at Zurich-based Swisscanto Asset Management, which oversees the equivalent of $46 billion including Volkswagen stock, "All of the Audi cars have a more trendy and Verdale    modern design than Volkswagen. This Audi design team is strong. If they can do the same successful job at Volkswagen as with the Audi, then it will be marvelous."
And tomorrow at the company's annual press conference Volkswagen will report its detailed financial figures. Europe's largest has reported last month that its 2006 net income has doubled to 2.75 billion euros or $3.61 billion USD due to the following: launching of new car models such as Audi's Q7 sport-utility vehicle, disposal of a vehicle-rental division and a tax gain. The Audi unit was accounted for about half of the group profit earned by the Wolfsburg, Germany-based Volkswagen.
Shares of Volkswagen in Frankfurt increase by 3.60 euros or 3.7 percent to 100 euros which is considered to be the highest price obtained since July 8, 1998. VW's stock has gained 16 percent for this year which is the third-best performance on Germany's benchmark DAX Index.
The Passat Scrapped for Good? Before the takeover of Winterkorn the Passat is a project headed by Wolfgang Bernhard, former CEO of VW who resigned last January due to the management shake-up that is happening inside Volkswagen.
The Bernhard Passat is the very same model that was suppose to debut at Berlin but unfortunately was stopped by Winterkorn. The Passat project is not totally abolished it's just that the new VW CEO's team from Audi which includes Walter de Silva has focused more on the next generation of Golf hatchback, Volkswagen's best-selling vehicle. The new Golf is scheduled to come out next year which doesn't leave much time for changes.
"The first priority is the Golf, the Golf successor, because that's the most important vehicle of the brand. That's the vehicle that has all of our attention," said Ulrich Hackenberg, the former Audi development chief and at present the head of Volkswagen engineering at an interview in Geneva.
Hackenberg first week at Volkswagen he ordered outright changes especially in cutting the size of the rubber window seals in half to reduce weight and cost while giving the car a more refined look. According to Hackenberg, the Golf looks is "Very Rough". "It looked very rough and not elegant and precise. This was something which could destroy the quality feeing, or the quality characteristics, of the car." The changes that will takes place will incorporate the Audi touch to the Volkswagen models and the Golf is the going to be first product of the said change.

Almost all of these two-door Mk2 Jettas have been modified in some way - so it’s unusual to see one that doesn’t look too different from when it drove off the lot. Not many actually did drive off the lot, either. Although the Mk2 Jetta was the best selling North American VW in the late 80s/early 90s, almost all were 4-doors. On top of that, VW’s U.S. sales fell steadily overall in the late 1980s as prices rose and competitors encroached. As is often the case, what few wanted back then is a cult car today. Most are modified because in VW of America’s eyes, the 2-door was meant to be an entry level car, not a sporty coupe - never getting the GLI or GLI 16V treatment. Slow sales meant it was dropped in 1991, but continued for 1992 in Canada. Tiny sedans were out of vogue during the great hatchback/supermini revolution of the 1970s, of which the Mk1 Golf (Rabbit in the USA) was a prime exponent. But some Europeans still wanted 3-box shapes, and VW served them up the Polo-based Derby in 1977, followed by the original Jetta (the same 3-box treatment but on a Golf), which bowed at Frankfurt in 1979. The car came stateside in early 1980 and did well, but it didn’t become VWoA’s prime mover until the mk2, which arrived in early 1985. As with the Mk2 Golf, the styling was done in-house this time, by a team led by Herbert Schäfer. The Mk2s looked larger and more substantial than the Mk1s, which they were - heavier, quieter, bigger, and faintly more “upmarket.” With hatches fading in the USA, the Jetta soon outpaced the Golf (the Rabbit name was dropped) and became VWoA’s volume leader. Though U.S. Jettas didn’t look too different from global models, they had a narrower range of specs. The 2-door was marketed as the value leader, and possibly fearing competition for the 3-door GTI, used only the 85-hp 1.8L 8-valve four or the diesel options. The only exception was the rare 1987 Wolfsburg edition, with GLI specs, 100hp, and Pirelli wheels. Not billed as sporty or a “coupe,” most U.S. buyers passed it over for the convenience of 4 doors if they wanted a Jetta or the GTI if they wanted speed. 2-doors made up less than 15% of sales, which led to the model getting cut. https://www.instagram.com/p/CCWhSS5FpZC/?igshid=8sbkynw7a5kg

With the market launch of the new VW Golf 8 in December 2019, the cards in the compact class are being reshuffled. The undisputed best-seller from Wolfsburg now enters its eighth generation. In our photo comparison, we show the new model side-by-side with the also new BMW 1 Series, which in its third generation has switched over to a front-wheel drive architecture.

The New Ford Focus
Tumblr media
I’m just going to come out and say it. The new Ford Focus has got to be amazing otherwise Ford is in trouble. It’s no secret that the past 2 years have been tough on the manufacturer with all the engine problems and call backs on some of their current models. Many people have lost confidence in Ford, and they have a lot to do to restore our confidence in their products. With that being said, the new Focus hasn’t landed on our shores yet (it is expected in the 3rd or 4th quarter of this year) but if the images and press releases doing the rounds on the internet are anything to go by, Ford has got a winner on its hands. Here’s why…
Ford listened to its customers.
The new Focus, like the current gen Mustang, is one of Fords Global Cars. Designed with the consumer in mind, Ford adopted what they call a “human centred” design process where they worked closely with current Focus owners to hear exactly what they wanted out of their cars. They did this to understand and satisfy the unique needs of Ford owners around the world.
Styling is always a subjective thing, but I find the new Focus to be very handsome and purposeful, with an athletic stance that I hope filters through to the drive. The good looks extend across the entire range, and depending on what market you’re in, there are 3 body styles, which are a 4 door sedan, 5 door estates and the popular 5 door hatch. Trim levels have been revised as well, introducing a luxury Vignale, ST-line, Active and upscale Titanium. The sporty ST-line is the one I am most excited about as it gives us a glimpse of what the next performance Focus will look like.
Off to a good start then? So, what’s new in the new Focus?
Engines include the 1.0 litre EcoBoost, International Engine of the year for 6 consecutive years from 2012 – 2017, a 1.5 litre EcoBoost and a 2.0 EcoBlue diesel with the option of a new 8 speed automatic transmission. Focus has traditionally been class leading in the handling department thanks to a well sorted chassis and suspension dynamics, new Focus looks to continue this tradition with an all new suspension setup promising to be more fun to drive.
More technology, more space and comfort and an even better driving experience. The new Focus features the latest in connectivity and infotainment systems, with high speed internet in some models with wireless charging for your phone and electronic devices, as well as the obligatory Bluetooth, AUX and USB we’ve all become accustomed to.
The technology extends to passenger and driver safety as well, with Ford debuting what they call Ford CoPilot 360. Essentially a collection of advanced driver aids designed to not only make your commute easier but a whole lot safer as well. These features will vary slightly on region and spec level you opt for, but noteworthy features are Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Ford’s enhanced Stop & Go. Speed sign recognition and Lane-Centering are also available to keep you in your lane and below the speed limit. Driving at night should be a breeze thanks to the Focus’ ability to monitor bends and road signs (a first in the motoring industry) and in turn pre-adjust the headlight patterns for improved visibility.
Autonomous features, usually reserved for the likes of big German saloons, are starting to show up more and more in this segment and Ford is at the forefront of this technology in the segment with their Active Park Assist which selects gears, handles steering wheel, throttle and brake input to manoeuvre the car into the parking bay. This, coupled with the segment first Evasive Steering Assist, steers cars around obstacles to help avoid accidents!
The VW Golf 7 is the King of the Hill at the moment, many have tried and failed to dethrone Wolfsburg’s finest, but with the inclusion of the new Focus things are really starting to hot up in this fiercely contested segment.

Volkswagen I.D. R Electric Racer to Tackle Pikes Peak Hill Climb
-
If Rimac, Techrules, Faraday, or any number of unproven automakers that have shown a prototype racing concept are anything to go by, it’s apparently pretty easy to build a 1000-plus-hp electric car out of absolutely nothing. The Volkswagen I.D. R pictured here will be a real, fully running electric hypercar. It has to be, because it’s going to climb Pikes Peak.
-
Much is riding on Volkswagen’s factory effort in the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, a motorsports event it has ignored since 1987. First, it wants to finish the entire 12.4-mile course, which a 652-hp Golf failed to do 31 years ago (to its credit, though, that Golf had two engines). Pikes Peak is also a very public demonstration—and hopefully for Wolfsburg executives, dramatic proof—that the company’s sudden switch to electric powertrains is a great idea. The I.D. R will be VW’s halo car for its entire I.D. series of EVs, which will include sedans, hatches, and a very familiar little bus, the first of which will be produced starting in late 2019.
-
-
VW won’t release any details other than these two renderings, which align with every Gran Turismo video-game fantasy car ever done. There may be no better wheelman for the I.D. R than Romain Dumas, a current Porsche factory driver, winner of the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans in the Audi R15, and a three-time Pikes Peak champion who holds the second-fastest time up the mountain. VW wants Dumas to drive so fast in the Unlimited class that he beats Rhys Millen, who set the 8:57.118 record for electric prototypes in 2016.

Two other private Volkswagen entries will run the course, including a 2010 Jetta GLI in the Time Attack and a 1972 Beetle in the Open class. The Beetle is a diesel with the 2.0-liter TDI engine, and we bet that, very quietly, VW brass will be cheering the hell out of that car, too.

The basic bones of the #VWScirocco were over a decade old by the time of the 16-valve version, but VW definitely saved the best for last. The 16V was the fastest A1 platform VW of all and a serious upgrade from the 8-Valve version it joined in the showroom. The 16V gave the Scirocco 30% more power and slightly revised looks with it’s monochrome body kit. It presaged later equipment swaps for other A1 VWs (the 1.8 16V is still very popular); but at the time it was a way of extending the life of an aging design. - The Mk2 Scirocco was styled in-house under the direction of Herbert Schäfer beginning 1976. The original Scirocco, styled by ItalDesign and built by Karmann, was only 2 years old at the time, but it had been styled in 1971; getting the A1s (EA398 #Scirocco and EA400 Golf) into production had been a Herculean task. The original Scirocco had all the A1 virtues - it was light, nimble, and fun; if not very powerful. Schäfer’s Mk2 took smoothed out the looks of the car, making it slightly larger and more capacious inside. ItalDesign also presented a Mk2, but VW chose Schäfer’s design. It debuted at Geneva in 1981, arriving in the U.S. as an ‘82 model. - The changes were mostly cosmetic - there was no need to reengineer a great chassis or a good engine family. In Europe, VW offered a 1.6L 112-hp GTi, but the fastest U.S. model was the 1.7L 90-hp Wolfsburg intro’d in 1983 (the standard engine from ‘84-’87). In the face of newer and faster competition, VW finally offered a faster Mk2 in mid-1986 - the 16V. At the heart of the new car was a 4-valve-per-cylinder, 1.8L version of VW’s proven EA827 engine family. It now offered 123-hp in U.S. form. 4-valve per-cyl setups became much more common in the late 80s, their freer breathing and better burn made for more power and good mpg. - The 16V was not just an engine upgrade. It also got a body kit  and upgraded 10.1” discs up front and 8.9” discs in the back, as well as other minor tweaks. Considerably faster than the 8-valver, the 16V briefly revitalized U.S. interest in the Scirocco, which continued on sale into the end of 1988 before being replaced by the Corrado. In Europe, the Mk2 continued into 1992. https://www.instagram.com/p/BycdoO9gZCm/?igshid=1dik8gfuwmo7n
