An indigenous oil company, Matrix Energy Limited, has petitioned the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court to restrain two media outlets and other parties from further publishing what it deems defamatory articles concerning its oil shipping operations. In its court filings, Matrix Energy and its CEO, Abdulkadir Adisa Aliu, categorically denied allegations of colluding with "Nigeria’s economic enemies" to import adulterated, substandard, or low-quality petroleum products into the country. They argued that their products strictly adhere to regulatory standards, countering reports that linked the company to the importation of substandard petrol into Nigeria, particularly from Malta. Charly Boy Cries Out as Bandits Who Killed Emir of Gobir Demand 60 Million, Six Bikes as Ransom for His Corpse Malta Controversy On August 17, 2024, Matrix Energy’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Akinola, issued a statement addressing the controversy. He refuted claims made by an online publication, which implicated the company in the importation of petrol from Malta. Akinola stated that these reports were not entirely accurate. The controversy gained traction when Aliko Dangote, CEO of Dangote Refinery, alleged that certain oil operators were collaborating with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to operate an illegal blending plant in Malta. This plant, according to Dangote, was responsible for importing substandard petroleum products into Nigeria. In response, NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mele Kyari, denied any connection to a refinery in Malta, pledging to prosecute any NNPC personnel or other individuals involved in such activities. Education Minister Announces Age Restrictions for NECO, WAEC Exams Notably, Nigeria’s petroleum imports from Malta surged significantly in 2023, reaching $2.8 billion. This sharp increase has raised concerns, especially considering that between 2017 and 2022, there were no imports, and in 2016, only $13.32 million worth of petroleum products were imported from Malta. Matrix Energy, in its August 17 statement, reiterated its compliance with all regulatory guidelines and denied the discharge of 200,000 metric tons of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) into its facilities in July 2024, as claimed by the media. However, the company did not explicitly deny importing petrol from Malta or other sources, asserting its right, like all Nigerian oil operators, to source products globally, provided it complies with Nigerian and international laws. “Our Chief Executive Officer, Abdulkabir Adisa, is a talented and dedicated Nigerian with the right to associate freely as well as trade freely in any part of the world. As he stated in his presentation before the Nigerian Senate, we are not aware that Nigerian companies have been banned from bringing in legitimate and standard products from outside the country, and until such a ban is in place, we will continue to serve the public with the best quality products,” the company stated. Matrix Heads to Court Matrix Energy has now turned to the FCT High Court, seeking declaratory reliefs against certain media publications, including a retraction of the reports and over N10 billion in damages. The company’s legal representative, Ahmed Raji SAN, argued that the media organizations had "falsely and maliciously published" the contested reports against his clients. Raji highlighted that his client is a member of the Presidential Economic Coordination Council (PECC), a body tasked with developing sustainable strategies to enhance Nigeria’s economic governance framework. He urged the court to recognize the damage these reports could inflict on the company’s reputation and economic standing. What You Should Know The allegations against Matrix Energy come amid broader concerns over Nigeria’s trade relationship with Malta. Aliko Dangote had previously claimed that certain NNPC officials and oil traders were operating blending plants off Malta’s coast, a claim that NNPC’s GCEO, Mele Kyari, has vehemently denied.
Despite these denials, Nigeria’s imports of petroleum products from Malta saw an unprecedented rise in 2023, sparking concerns about the integrity of the trade practices involved. As Matrix Energy pursues legal action, the court will weigh the evidence presented, considering the critical role of the media in holding corporations accountable while protecting against unwarranted defamation. The outcome of this case may set a significant precedent in the ongoing debate over media freedom and corporate responsibility in Nigeria’s oil industry.

WASSCE: Imo sets up monitoring C’ttee to checkmate malpractices
Tumblr media
The Imo Government has set up a monitoring committee to checkmate malpractices, as the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) begins. Commissioner for Education, Prof. Johncliffe Nwadike, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Owerri, on Monday. Nwadike, a former Head, Department of History and International Studies at the Imo State University, Owerri, said all possible loopholes for examination malpractices had been blocked. He said the committee would rove from one part of the state to another, to ensure strict compliance with set standards for the examination. According to him, a special team had also been set up to monitor members of the committee and make it difficult for them to compromise standard. “The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and I set up a special squad to monitor the committee and supervise the supervisors to ensure strict compliance with set standards. “We interacted with the WAEC Coordinator in Imo, carried out sensitisation in schools, on the need for principals to nominate as supervisors those who can protect their integrity. “We also organised a workshop for supervisors, where we told them that violations of guidelines for the exams would attract sanctions such as suspension, demotion or outright dismissal,” he said. He also said that reagents and chemicals required for laboratory tests were ready, adding that candidates in the state would not lack any necessary items needed. He however, assured Imo people that the ministry was working in close cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure the release of all outstanding results for the 2022 WASSCE. He urged candidates, schools and supervisors in Imo, to fully cooperate with the arrangements to ensure a smooth conduct of the examinations. He expressed confidence that students in the state would excel in the examinations. (NAN) Read the full article

Moving to the UK: An Ultimate Guide for Nigerian Students
Tumblr media
Are you a Nigerian student looking to study in the UK? The number of Nigerians wishing to study in the UK has been steadily increasing since 2018, with a 47% year-on-year increase from 1,620 in 2021 to 2,380 in 2022. In January, UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) resumed study visa processing for Nigerian students after temporarily suspending it due to the impact of COVID-19 on courier routes.
However, UKVI is currently prioritising Ukraine Family Scheme applications in response to the Russia-Ukraine war, which may cause delays for other visa applications. Despite this, with proper time management and planning, you can get your student visa application approved and begin your studies in the UK.
Here are some things you need to know;
Nigerian Students: Securing Admissions, a Student Visa
Before applying for a programme at your dream university, make sure you meet the necessary qualifications for the programme. Once you have received a conditional offer, you will need to provide supporting documents including a transcript of your academic qualifications, a CV or resume (for postgraduate study), a copy of your passport, a reference or recommendation letter, a personal statement, and an English language qualification such as IELTS, SSEC, WAEC with a grade of C6 or above, or TOEFL.
Obtain Your CAS Number
After finalizing everything, you will receive an unconditional offer from your university, and you will be asked to make a deposit, which can vary depending on your program and institution. For example, at the University of Sussex, self-funded international students who are starting a master's program may need to pay a tuition fee deposit of 2,000 pounds.
According to the University of Westminster, all international applicants must pay a minimum deposit of £4000 before receiving a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
The following step is to make sure that your university issues you a CAS number. A CAS number is evidence that you have received an unconditional offer from your university and is required for your student visa application. If your university does not provide you with your CAS number, contact them directly.
Complete a Tuberculosis (TB) Test
If you're planning to study in the UK for more than six months, taking a TB test is mandatory, and you'll need to submit the results to UKVI during your visa application. The only recognised centre by UKVI for TB screening is the Migration Health Assessment Centre at the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). The cost of the test is approximately 57,800 nairas, and you'll receive your results on the same day.
Begin Your UK Student Visa Application
The following is a list of everything you will need for your student visa application:
A bank statement
Proof of funds (to demonstrate that you have the financial capability to cover your tuition fees and living expenses)
A sponsorship letter (written by your parent or guardian who will be sponsoring you)
A birth certificate or equivalent (to verify your relationship with your sponsor)
A CAS letter from your university
TB test results
An offer letter from your university
All of the documents you previously submitted for your university admission, including a copy of your passport, transcripts, and so on.
After gathering all the required documents, you will need to apply for your student visa online. Don't worry if you can't complete the application form in one sitting, as you can save your progress and return to it later.
Upon submitting your documents, you will be directed to a TLS webpage where you will need to make two payments: a health surcharge of approximately US$900 and a visa application fee of around US$478.
Once you have made your payments, you will need to schedule an appointment on the same website to visit one of the three UK Visa Application Centres in Nigeria: Abuja, Lagos Ikeja, or Lagos Victoria Island (additional fees apply at this location). At the centre, you will need to provide your biometric information (fingerprint and photograph).
It is worth noting that getting an appointment can be challenging, and you can opt for a walk-in visa application, which incurs an additional fee of approximately 42,000 Naira.
After submitting your biometric information, it will take approximately 15 working days to process a standard student visa and five working days for a PV student visa. Finally, it is essential to keep checking relevant government websites for the latest travel updates. Best of luck!
