admittedly, the look on warner's face as they'd gone through the motions of being introduced to the new group had been less than friendly. the group of them had joined his best friend, harry, and his sister, luella, on the spacious, l-shaped couch but his gaze had skipped between each of their faces only briefly before he looked back at the movie playing on the screen. he'd been against the idea of a house party, but he'd been outnumbered by two to one and his only form of protest was playing roman holiday on the television while refusing to get up and mingle, though it was drowned out by the music playing downstairs. luella had booked a dj that she found on instagram and it was only one of many eyeroll enduing choices from the night so far. forcibly making him socialise would be another tally on that list if they kept it up. harry seemed to get the memo, at least enough to suggest they all go down and get drinks. warner lingered, thinking he might be able to avoid it, but then his gaze caught on another person remaining there on the couch and he took a second look, eyes narrowing. "you should go with everyone else." he suggested, though his eyes lingered on her features. she was beautiful, but he was less than interested in talking to some sorority girl right now. "you'll have more fun down there." he added, a moment later, trying to soften his tone, but how successful it was, he wasn't sure.

A family home that is casual, stylish, functional, and adaptable

Located in a magnificent, park-like setting filled with mature, 80-foot-tall oak trees, this residence by Walker Warner Architects meets the clients’ desire for a family home that is casual, stylish, functional, and adaptable. Flexible indoor and outdoor spaces allow for the use and enjoyment of the site in its entirety, both house and grounds.

Accessed via a long drive, the property had developed piecemeal over the years, resulting in an experience that was anything but peaceful. By completely reworking the site and blending the clients’ traditional and modern tastes, the design team created an evocative new home that’s nestled into the woods.

Utilizing clean lines and a pared-down palette of cedar, metal, and concrete, the two-story residence borders an open space preserve. The home’s transparency and relationship to the land reflects the site’s expansiveness, which is evident upon arrival at the formal entry where guests can immediately experience the natural setting through seamless indoor-outdoor connections.

The home’s rooflines are stretched to protect the interiors from hot summers, while responding to forms prominent in the California rural landscape which served as design inspiration for the home.

Inside, the team created zones where family activities can happen in a communal way. “The home was organized into public and private zones,” notes Mike McCabe of Walker Warner Architects, “with the family’s everyday living spaces easing into one another. The architectural intent was to provide a house that lives small day to day for the family but can expand to accommodate bigger gatherings and events.” A mudroom with cubbies allows for easy organization of family belongings while everyday casual areas for living, dining and cooking are immediately adjacent to the pool and terrace. “The private parts of the house are about retreat and family time,” adds McCabe, “while the public parts allow them to mingle with their guests and enjoy all the site has to offer.”

Interior materials and color palette complement the architecture and work their way throughout the house across a variety of different finishes. Stained wood plank doors were installed in painted frames with textural bronze hardware, gentle gray limestone floors were combined with warm walnut planks, and walls were covered in grayed white paint to create a feeling of warm modernity. The stone on the fireplace is the same material as the stone flooring but hand-treated in a brushstroke-like effect that lends the surface a light, elegant texture. All interior furnishings that were designed and curated for the project compliment the casual yet dynamic architecture while giving a chic air to the residence. Simple sculptural shapes, textural woven fabrics, organic elements and a few accents of forest colors complete the marriage of inside and out. “Almost every piece of furniture has an angle or slope,” notes David Oldroyd of ODADA. “But more natural shapes—such as the curvy chair legs or pebble-shaped poufs—bring in some softness.”

The property borders an open space preserve, so landscape designer Bernard Trainor of Ground Studio gently transitioned the manmade garden into the natural surroundings to trick the eye, making the property appear to go on forever. As with the architecture, Trainor’s approach to design was to deftly “thread the needle” between the oaks. “Closer to the house, notes Trainer, “the hardscape and plantings reflect the house’s architectural shapes—more linear. As you move farther away, into the oak woodland, they get wilder.” Overall, the residence’s indoor and outdoor design reconciles historic context, building constraints, and functionality, resulting in a cohesive and harmonious space for living.

even the fluorescent lighting of the police station made warner uneasy, as if it wasn't bad enough that he'd just stumbled upon a dead body with an ex-friend. they'd been given water and told to sit and wait to be interviewed. he could feel the officers eyes on them as they passed every few moments. some offered hesitant smiles but he saw through them. somehow stumbling on a dead body made you top of the suspect list. he'd intended to call the police and get out of there as quickly as possible, but they'd arrived moments after the call and iridescent had touched the damn body and well... he knew she hadn't murdered anyone, but she did a good job of looking so incredibly guilty. even now as they waited and he peered at her again, the look on her face made him clench his jaw. "hey," he hissed. "relax, will you? there's nothing to freak out about, you didn't do anything wrong."

"bet that was plenty riveting." warner appeared from behind riley as an older man he didn't recognise finally walked off. he was late to the event but immediately on the hunt for his quasi partner in crime turned occasional verbal sparring partner. their families had been getting together for these things since the two had been in diapers, though their version of friendship was relatively questionable. his sister would swear up and down that he had a crush and... well, maybe she wasn't that far off. the sight of riley would make anyone understand that much. offering her a little smirk, he did his best to be subtle in taking in her outfit. "good to see me, right? i would have stepped in there, but i didn't want to be rude."

"think he's looking over?" warner refused to look, he was too focused on chloe in front of him, the two of them sat on a bench at the party, his body facing hers as he straddled it and played with her hair. "i could be even more all over you, if you wanted." he chuckled softly.

warner had hesitated twice before he actually reached out, tugging on mackenzie's sleeve to get her attention and then motioning for her to follow him out the back door. he resented having to utter the age old question, but he hoped she wouldn't freak out. can we talk? despite his intention to not make this a whole thing, the question hung heavy between them as the two of them stepped out onto the deck. he leaned against the railing, hands holding on as he looked out into the water. the sun was setting slowly and taking on an orange-pink hue, painting the glittering water the same way. "i know this summer's been a little weird so far, but... y'know, i just felt like maybe it was worth talking to you, seeing where you were at, uh... i just wanted to tell you," warner was rambling, which was uncharacteristic of him. still, he didn't expect his pauses to be long enough for mackenzie to interject. he barely registered her words at first, blinking rapidly as he lost his train of thought. "what?"

the greeting had thrown warner off, as if somehow he'd been caught and their words were shining a light on the real reason he was attending this damn party in the first place. "what are you, the party police?" he replied, scoffing. "i go to parties all the time." except the difference was, this party had her. and that brought up the possibility of his attendance a substantial amount.
