Maths professors at top UK universities will warn ministers on Thursday that academics are too scared to challenge damaging attempts to “decolonise” the curriculum.

A dozen leading academics have written to Claire Coutinho, the Education Minister, calling for more protections for free speech at universities, where many professors fear it is too “personally risky” to challenge the decolonisation agenda.

For maths degrees, professors are being pressured to explain how they are presenting a “multicultural and decolonised view” of the subject. In a recent consultation, the Quality Assurance Agency, which advises universities on course standards, said maths professors need to “present the work of a diverse group” of mathematicians, and ensure students are aware if they had “connections to the slave trade, racism or Nazism.”

A group of professors will warn on Thursday that such guidance “risks politicising the subject of mathematics and presenting a skewed perspective on its history.”

'Personally risky'

They said in a joint letter, seen by The Telegraph, that it also “infringes on the academic freedom of mathematicians to teach their subject according to their best professional judgement”. However, they warned that academics “who challenge orthodoxies on topics such as gender identification and diversity face physical intimidation from student activists”.  

“Many mathematicians see it as personally risky to suggest that 'decolonising the curriculum' might not be the best way to encourage more Black and minority ethnic people to take up mathematics,” they added.

Signatories of the letter include Prof Alan Sokal of University College London, Prof Abhishek Saha of Queen Mary University of London, Prof Jane Hutton, a medical statistician who works at the University of Warwick, and Dr Yuri Bazlov from the University of Manchester.

They are urging the Government to fight to pass the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill in its original form, despite opposition in the House of Lords. Clause 4 of the bill would give academics and students the power to sue universities if their freedom of speech rights are breached. The Government tabled amendments to the bill which would mean academics could only use those powers as a “last resort”, after first pursuing complaints through the procedures of the relevant university and the higher education regulator.

Personal cost of raising complaints 'far too high'

However, responding to the amendments, the mathematicians said: “We do not think this would give us the protection that we need. Universities have vast resources and power compared to individual academics. If academics are required to exhaust all internal processes…and then spend up to 12 months taking their complaint through the Office for Students before they can begin the lengthy process of going to the courts, we believe that the personal cost of raising any complaints would be far too high, rendering the system ineffective.” Ms Coutinho has previously said that the Government remains “resolute in our commitment that academics and speakers will have the right to go to court where this fundamental right has been denied.”

A spokesperson for Universities UK said: “Universities work hard to create the right conditions to protect and promote free speech and academic freedom across their campuses, and there are already significant legal duties placed on universities to uphold freedom of speech. The Government’s proposed changes to the Freedom of Speech Bill are helpful in making the new legal tort more targeted in scope, reducing the risk of university resources being wasted defending frivolous or vexatious claims.”

E.M. Forster was elected an honorary fellow of King's College, Cambridge; declined a knighthood in 1949; was made Companion of Honour in 1953; and made a member of the Order of Merit in 1969.

When Forster's cousin, Philip Whichelo, donated a portrait of Forster to the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GLHA), Jim Herrick, the founder, quoted Forster's words: 'The humanist has four leading characteristics – curiosity, a free mind, belief in good taste, and belief in the human race'.

Edward passed on June 7, 1970. He was 91. His ashes, mingled with those of Buckingham, were later scattered in the Rose Garden of Coventry's crematorium, near Warwick University.

For hundreds of years, lighthouses have welcomed travelers to the shores of the United States. However, the advent of navigation technologies like GPS has left many of the shore’s sentinels without a practical purpose. Since the passage of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act in 2000, the GSA has been transferring ownership of lighthouses “no longer critical to the U.S. Coast Guard’s mission needs” to groups willing to preserve them, according to a statement from the agency.

“People really appreciate the heroic role of the solitary lighthouse keeper,” says John Kelly of the GSA’s office of real property disposition to Mark Pratt of the Associated Press (AP). “They were really the instruments to provide safe passage into some of these perilous harbors which afforded communities great opportunities for commerce, and they’re often located in prominent locations that offer breathtaking views.”

At many lighthouses, upkeep is challenging: Two of the structures up for auction, the Penfield Reef Lighthouse in Fairfield, Connecticut, and the Stratford Shoal Light in the middle of the Long Island Sound, are accessible only by boat.

“They’re such unusual reflections of our history that it takes a certain kind of person who wants to be a part of that,” Robin Carnahan, administrator of the GSA, tells the New York Times’ Michael Levenson.

For now, the lighthouses won’t be available to just anyone. The GSA is first offering them at no cost to federal agencies, state and local governments, nonprofits, educational agencies and community development organizations. To be eligible, interested buyers must be able to maintain the historic property and allow the public to access it. More than 80 lighthouses have found a new owner—and stable future—through this process so far, according to the GSA.

Several of the lighthouses up for grabs this year are already under the care of nonprofits, which can apply to continue their work, Kelly tells the AP. For example, the Nobska Lighthouse in Falmouth, Massachusetts is maintained by the Friends of Nobska Light, which has applied for the transfer of ownership, according to the Cape Cod Times’ Zane Razzaq.

If no owner is found, the lighthouses will be offered for sale to the public via auction. The GSA has auctioned 70 lighthouses to date, in sales ranging from $10,000 to over $900,000, reports NPR’s Emma Bowman.

Other lighthouses going to auction this year include the Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Light in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Light in Chassell, Michigan. The list of transfer-eligible lighthouses includes Lynde Point Lighthouse in Old Saybrook, Connecticut; Plymouth/Gurnet Lighthouse in Plymouth, Massachusetts; Little Mark Island and Monument in Harpswell, Maine; and Erie Harbor North Pier Lighthouse in Erie, Pennsylvania.

warwick school is one of the most prestigious schools in the country, prepping their students for oxbridge and the like. extremely hard to get into with entrance assessments and exams. so these kids need to put in effort. of course things could have changed since christian went there back in the day but i find that hard to believe; warwick is one of the oldest, most reputable schools in the uk. i doubt a senior school like that has a coke problem. warwick uni? 100%. warwick school? nah.

so apart from a joint or two i don’t think christian has taken a lot of drugs in his life. he said he never had a huge interest in studying, spent most of his weekends karting at karting tracks or in his backyard, then as soon as he was out of school he tried karting/racing professionally. since he had to be able to operate a kart/single seater a lot of the time i’m assuming he wasn’t on anything.

also. i don’t think christian was the guy to take drugs to self medicate. most likely he would have taken drugs due to social/peer pressure/glorification from the people around him. and - correct me if i’m wrong (i don’t think i am) - he doesn’t strike me as someone who hung around the cool kids with the drugs a lot………

also. family. i assume his parents held a key part in him attending warwick (made him go and do well (standard)). he comes from a very british tory family, very concerned with a respectable image, wanting their children to get the best education possible. do not think they would have let him get away with doing class a drugs at school.

re ginger spice. i don’t know much about her other than that one of her exes was once arrested for having class a on him. but her career peaked in the 90s, the pressure of being in the public eye, other band mates self medicating…….. yeah she might have….

i think it’s safe to say they’re good now though. family seems to matter most to them, they have three kids they’re bringing up in a very safe environment. they go racing on the weekends (horses and or cars). all well and proper boring.

     KyleCares and the RIIL will take a unified proactive approach in advocating for mental health awareness across the RIIL community. This will include promoting educational and training opportunities to high school principals and athletic directors and introducing the “KyleCares-WeCare” awareness campaign which hinges on the belief that “Mental Health Matters” as much as physical health.  

    Through this collaborative effort, KyleCares and the RIIL aim to support students by stressing the importance of focusing on their emotional well-being through self-care and by encouraging students who are struggling with their mental health to seek help.

      Plans are already underway for a RIIL teen mental health summit, to be held Friday, January 12, 2024 at Rhode Island College. In collaboration with KyleCares, this free conference will focus on the importance of wellness and self-care. 

         Within its overall mission, the RIIL remains committed to placing just as much emphasis on a student’s emotional health and well-being as their academic and athletic success.  

     “One of the main priorities at the RIIL is the mental, physical and emotional wellbeing of students,” said RIIL Executive Director Mike Lunney. “It’s not just about how they perform on the field or whether they win or lose. We care about the whole student. So we are very excited to partner with KyleCares to provide mental health awareness and support to our membership.” 

     The teen mental health crisis continues to increase across the United States, and athletes are not immune to anxiety or depression. The stress of competing at a high level in high school sports while balancing studies, part-time jobs and personal relationships can often overwhelm young people. Unfortunately, many will never admit they’re struggling with their mental health. A trusted, caring adult can be a positive influence for young people. Athletic departments and coaches are uniquely positioned to provide support when an athlete is struggling emotionally or withdrawn. Schools can increase the likelihood that students in need will receive the appropriate help by developing a strong link between their athletic programs and counselor resources.

Aiming for Excellence

In many ways it feels like the end of term and not just the half term break. There has been much to celebrate over the last few weeks and I have been reflecting on all that has been achieved.

Sport is a key part of life at Bablake and we know how important it is both in terms of wellbeing and because of what it teaches us about working together. There have been some excellent results recently, especially in netball, and I thoroughly enjoy watching school sport on a Saturday.

One of the lessons that sport teaches us is the importance of aiming for the top and not giving up. I have lost count of the number of games that have been won or lost in the final few minutes. In football, you are apparently twice as likely to score in the final few minutes than in other time periods during the game and I am sure the same applies to other sports. It might only be a game, but ‘never give up’ seems the obvious lesson, as it has been for our Oxbridge candidates in the Upper Sixth. They didn’t all receive an offer, but five of them did, which is a record for recent years, and all who applied will have learnt something from the process.

Before the final Les Misérables performance last Friday, Ms Bradley and her team went through each scene in detail to highlight small sections that could be done a little differently. Their attention to detail right to the end was shared by all who took part and it certainly paid off.

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful half-term and I wish all those going on our school trips to Italy and Berlin good luck. Thank you all for your ongoing support.

Motivation Report: Promote Student Autonomy

      “The notion of learner autonomy was first developed out of practice-that the teacher researchers at the Center de Recherches et d’Applications Pedagogiques en Langues (CARPEL), University of Nancy, France, in the early 1970’s. According to the former Director of CARPEL, Henri Holec, the need for a term to describe people’s ability to take charge of their own learning arose for practical, though idealistic reasons”. (Smith, 2008) In the ELT Journal, volume 62, published by Oxford Academic, Richard Smith, associate professor at the University of Warwick, notes that “in the interests of widening access to education and promoting lifelong learning, CARPLE began to offer adults opportunity to learn… free from teacher direction. However, it soon became clear that participants did not necessarily have the full capacity (competence) to take charge of decision-making in all areas normally determined by an institution, teacher, or textbook, namely: objectives, content and materials, syllabus, methods and techniques, pace time and place, and evaluation procedures” (2008). Due to this the “CARPEL put into place various kinds of support measures, including learner counselling and training, to assist in the development of learners’ abilities to work more effectively in a self-directed fashion” (Smith, 2008).       Merriam and Bierema define autonomy as “the yearning to direct our own lives, or in other words to control tasks, time, team, and technique” and is “synonymous with self-directedness”. (2014. P.147) The promotion of student autonomy motivational technique, focuses on the fact that “self-determination is the basic human need to have control over one’s life” and that “students are more motivated to engage in meaningful learning if they are acting of their own volition.” (Barkley & Major, 2020. P.74)       Barkley and Major outline in chapter five of their book Student Engagement Techniques, “tips and strategies for creating classroom conditions that enhance student motivation” (2020. P.65) After reviewing the thirteen motivational strategies, promotion of student autonomy stands out as a benchmark technique for adult education, fostering lifelong learning and a method to build other motivational techniques into fluent strong tools for educators to enhance their classroom learning. I think that in my classroom this strategy will fit well, as engaging, and guiding students to self-direct their learning will enhance lifelong learning attributes that are key, and students can continue to utilize throughout their careers as successful hairstylists.

         Autonomy in the classroom can be present on different levels of learning from simplistic research and development skills to more complex self-guided studies. With its strong links to lifelong learning, teachers employing autonomous strategies, can integrate autonomy methods in any classroom from formal to adult education, self-directed and online learning. Due to the large capacity of this strategy, I think it is important for educators to understand their role and the role of their learners when utilizing this technique in their classrooms, and the impact on both their teaching methods and their learners’. Considering the role of the teacher in the autonomous classroom, Khem Raj Joshi in the Journal of NELTA, states that “generally, a teacher in such learning is a facilitator, an organizer, a resource person providing learners with feedback and encouragement, and a creator of learning atmosphere and space. In other words, a teacher works as a guide, a co-operative, and an initiator rather than an authority” (2011). When referring to the learner’s role Joshi states that the learner “is the one, who accepts that his/her own efforts are crucial for effective learning and co-operates with the teachers monitoring own progress through the use of opportunities available” (2011).      In any classroom nothing is perfect, but we must be aware of the disadvantages of techniques and strategies we employ as teachers so we can be prepared to assist our students learning as well as adjust our methods to meet the desired outcomes and objectives of our classrooms. The promotion of autonomy for motivation strategy does not fall short of that fact and is clear that its disadvantages lie in resistance of learners and educators unwilling to become facilitators over authoritative figures. On the other side of that, I think that this strategies’ advantages far outweigh the negative impacts which can be overcome. In utilizing autonomy for motivation teachers gain the ability to have clarity in student progress, have a closer student teacher relationship, accelerate lifelong learning attributes, gain time management in their classrooms, have better understanding of learners’ goals, evaluation becomes collaborative, teachers become better role models and recourses for their students and more. Barkley and Major (2020, P.74) outline ten general strategies for promoting autonomy. They are as follows:

1. Provide students with meaningful rationales that enable them to understand the purpose and personal importance of course activities. 2. Acknowledge student’s feelings when it is necessary to require them to do something they don’t want to do 3. Give students choices among several learning activities that meet the same objective, and be clear about how the choices meet objectives. 4. Allow students options in deciding how to implement classroom procedures. 5. Allow students to decide when, where, and in what order to complete assignments. 6. Encourage students to manage on their own when possible. 7. Encourage students to define, monitor, and achieve self-determined goals individually. 8. Help students to use self-assessment procedures that monitor progress as well as identify personal strengths and potential barriers. 9. Provide opportunities for students to assist in determining evaluation activities. 10. Avoid making students right, wrong, good, or bad based on their choices but instead emphasize accountability.

I think that these ten tips give any educator a roadmap to successful engagement of student autonomy strategies in their classroom and should be considered when developing programs, courses, and lessons. In the hairstyling classroom I can see how these tips can be utilized in different ways to employ this strategy. For example, tip number three can be used to give students the choice of how they submit assignments, like videos, essays, or presentation boards that best suit their abilities, where implementation of tip number one will define the requirements and standards to which those assignments will be held. Therefore, students assume ownership of how they are learning within the guidelines of the course objectives.      As mentioned previously, in my classroom, promotion of autonomy is a strategy that will not only be advantageous to my classroom and students’ learning process, but it also provides students with the lifelong learning skills necessary for mastery of hairstyling. The hair industry is ever changing and growing with continuous science and product advancements, a rapid turnover of trends and a large focus on technique development. Hairstyling as a trade, is a career that must be advanced parallel to these industry progressions with continued education and self-driven professionals at the forefront of the industry.       In conclusion, “How we teach students is critical to their development of authority, autonomy, and authorship” (Major & Barkley, 2020, P.74) With that, autonomy of learners in today’s world is proven to be beneficial in education and for society. More specifically, teaching hairstylists to be autonomous lifelong learners by utilizing the promotion of autonomy strategy sets students up for success in the hair industry and advances mastery of their craft. As Merriam and Bierema note, “Mastery is the compulsion to progress and improve around things that matter” (2014, P.147).
