In a clinic on Main Street in Washingtonville,
Lost in thought by a window stood Mary McGill,
When her eyes met the eyes of a woman outside.
Was it rain on her glasses or tears she had cried?
Outside on the picket line Rose Mary Flynn
Felt the rain on her face and the anger within
As she stared at the face inside, gentle and warm,
That seemed almost to beckon her in from the storm.
And the two women found themselves staring awhile --
Recognition, awareness, but never a smile --
And there seemed to be some kind of truce in that stare,
Until Rose Mary Flynn recalled why she was there.
The she held up her sign that said, "Thou shalt not kill,"
And she pointed directly at Mary McGill,
And Mary McGill, before starting to turn,
Gave a nod to acknowledge Rose Mary's concern.
That day, Mary counseled a child named Michelle
Who tried hard to seem calm in her personal hell.
Mary spoke to Michelle with the tone of a friend,
And her gentleness brought Michelle's calm to an end.
Michelle told her story with pain hard to hide,
Of her mother and John and the new life inside.
She had meant to show love. She had meant no one harm,
But her mother felt anger and John felt alarm.
But the new life inside was a life. It was real,
With a brain and a heartbeat she thought she could feel.
And she wanted the child. She would love it so well.
But she'd end the new life for her mother and John.
"I'll do it," Michelle said, "for my mother and John."
These words had an emptiness Mary saw through.
"If you do it," said Mary, "please do it for you."
Michelle looked at Mary through the pain and the tears
And Mary saw all of Michelle’s sixteen years,
And she thought she saw something of several years more
Perhaps she had seen Michelle’s face once before.
Michelle only murmured the words “I don’t know.”
And she stood and she turned and she started to go,
And Mary made one last request of Michelle
With her parting words: "Take time to think this out well."
That night, Michelle's mother stormed into the place,
Not hiding her anger, yet hiding her face.
"My daughter came here with a purpose," she said,
"Not to have you put foolish ideas in her head.
She's too young! She's a girl, and the father's a boy,
And she thinks that a baby is some kind of toy!
Your job was to teach her, to straighten her out,
Not confuse her and send her home riddled with doubt."
"My job," explained Mary, "was not to confuse,
But to make her aware of her freedom to choose.
My job is to make sure the options are known.
You are right: she is young, but her life is her own.”
Then Mary saw something in this woman's face
And remembered the person, the time, and the place.
This woman had labeled abortion a sin.
The face on the picket line, Rose Mary Flynn.
People often accuse and are quick to condemn
When the issue is safe and does not affect them.
I don't envy the job facing Mary McGill.
I don't know all the meanings of "Thou shalt not kill."
It's a conflict more simply prevented than solved,
But the choice must belong to the woman involved,
And I think that the answers come not from above,
But from us and our consciences, tempered with love.

Naomi Sewell (September 24, 1892 - August 5, 1993) was born at Lincoln University, Pennsylvania to Perry W. Sewell and Florence Snowden Sewell, the youngest of three children. The Sewell family moved from Pennsylvania to Baltimore, to South Carolina, back to Baltimore, and finally ended up in Washingtonville, New York. She was the first African American student to graduate from Washingtonville high school in 1910. She attended Howard University in the fall of 1910. She was present at the meeting of Alpha chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in the Fall of 1912. She and 21 other women made history through the founding of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She taught elementary school in East St. Louis. She began her teaching career in 1914, following her graduation from Howard University, and was passionate about her role in the classroom. The school she taught at was segregated, yet she did not let that stop her or deter her dedication. After enduring the East St. Louis race riots in 1917, she moved to Princeton, New Jersey to teach. This school was segregated, and she became an advocate for the fair and equal treatment of African American teachers and faculty. She petitioned for the African American teachers to have their bathroom facilities, a goal that was successfully met. On September 1, 1920, she married Clarence Richardson, a member of the Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. The couple moved to New York City. She began to substitute teaching and her husband was a post office employee. The Richardsons were married for 27 years and were the parents of Gloria Clark, their foster child. Upon her husband's passing, she returned to her home in Washingtonville. She was very active in her community and sorority. She was known for living quietly, she was admired for her work with extreme activism and civic service. She was the last living founder of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and continued to participate in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Her alumnae chapter organized 90th and 100th birthday celebrations for her. Me, Myself and More Me

A tiny pasta shape, with Pecorino Romano (not Parmesan) and butter along with Minute Maid Berry Punch (in the carton, not the bottle) and a pack of mixed Gusher's. If appetizers are allowed I'm also adding Pillsbury crescent rolls with enough butter to put WD40 out of business (I don't even necessarily use the butter but it's comforting to know that I can. I feel like this is one of the 7 sins but I digress). I know dinner rolls are technically a side dish but carbs alongside more carbs just feels morally wrong whereas carbs as an introduction to more carbs seems a bit more classy.
If you don't believe me just ask any bread basket at any white table cloth restaurant.
Speaking of last things, I'd like to replace 'last' with 'most recent'. It sounds more like positivity and less like decease.
The most recent thing I had the joy of creating was comfort. My friend recently found herself caring for her boyfriend who suffered an accident at his jobsite. Between her career and caring for him she was overwhelmed, underfed and without sleep. My best advice in helping anyone who is dealing with similar circumstances...simmer something on the stove.
When times are tough, a warm homecooked meal that was made for you instead of by you goes a long way.
Comments like "I just can't relax" were replaced with "the house smells so good." And instead of "I haven't slept all week", it was "I can't wait to eat this." So, the most recent thing I created was comfort...in the form of eggplant parmesan. Not just for them, but also for myself as I watched my friend enjoy a decent meal, off her feet, and him shift his focus away from the pain and onto a delicious homecooked meal. After all, culinary arts is my biggest passion in life and quite honestly my love language.
If I could, I would spend the majority of my days cooking, learning more about cooking, shopping for ingredients, reading more about ingredients and everything in between. I'll write the least about that for now because I'm not sure how to express my love for cooking in less than an infinite amount of words. Which brings me to these four:
Flour, Water, Salt, Yeast.
The title of the most recent book I've read, devout to the art of bread making. In short, me and the art of bread making are as compatible as Snapchat and the battery life of the iPhone 6 (this is such an age specific joke/reference but I'm proud of it). It wasn't until I read this book that I finally put 5 cups of all purpose flour to use instead of into the garbage.
Speaking of which, the most recent movie I've watched is Elvis. The only thing that impressed me about this movie was how much the actor resembled him. The most recent show I've watched is Tehran. The only thing that didn't impress me was how slowly I apparently am at reading English subtitles because, wow, the Arabic language is spoken so fast. Did the Washingtonville Central School District drop the ball in the reading comprehension department or is this solely a Kristine problem? Add this to the list of things I've yet to decide right under 'what should I major in'?
