plus WCRL actually allows you to use food rewards after certain exercises! which probably shocks the sensibilities of the “it’s not real training without rewards” crowd but i’d think that would make it more appealing to newbies like myself

What are your current training goals?

The Toller is rotting on the couch - he's only six, we could be doing lots more, but ehhh... I will probably continue to show him in mondio ob for kicks but he doesn't really need training for that. We cram a little in the weeks ahead of a show and that's sufficient.

Sharpie will be ready for mondio temperament test and obedience 1 next fall for sure. This fall would have been a stretch, but I'm not planning on showing at all this year with covid. I still think I could put an MR1 on her but she needs so much more bitework than she's gotten. We have done a lot of rally in quarentine - she got her RL1 but needs more rally specific skills before I'm going to enter her in Level 2. I need to film and submit courses for AKC, I don't think she could handle an AKC show site so it will be kind of fun to get an AKC title on her. When in person trials come back, we can do WCRL at our home building.

So yeah. I basically only do mondio now. I had aspirations of finishing the Toller's field titles but this year I had to admit it was time to give up the ghost on that. I'm still proud of what we accomplished! But my motivation on that has run out, it's too discouraging to have no one to train with.

Introducing WCRL FLASH.  It is a class with emphasis on movement together through the course.  The hallmark of FLASH class is there are no sits or downs, leading to flowing courses with minimal pauses. Courses consist of moving exercises categorized as “turn”, “cone”, and “heeling” exercises. As a result, exercises involving sits and/or downs are not allowed. Some new moving exercises are also being introduced. 

Just saw this from USDAA/WCRL! Sounds interesting and especially great for Chandra. We have done little to no obedience/rally training lately to limit the position changes, sits, downs, etc that hinder her rehab progress. We’ll definitely check this out!

Can't say this on FB because it's going to be taken the wrong way and come across as mean spirited.

Discussion on "championship" titles that aren't competitive, don't require placing over other dogs, and are not a peak achievement title. So the "level championships" in WCRL Rally (RL1X and even ARCH [compare ARCHMX]) and CDSP Obedience (CD-CCH). Even the AKC scentwork level elite titles (SWNE and frankly I'm even a little grumpy about individual element titles). Primarily, these titles are earned by passing the class multiple times, usually 10 (usually 3 passes gets the basic title).

One, I don't think these titles add anything interesting to trialing. Dear god I barely want to do rally novice once let alone three times let alone ten let alone thirty times for ARCHMX.

It's asking so little of our dogs. Look, I'm not out to steal someone's joy. If you have a broken little dog and on leash rally is all he is ever going to do, that's awesome when he does it! I am so happy for you! You should be proud of yourself!

One of my training partners has a very very reactive corgi. He is able to trial in our training building with reasonable reactive protections and she has worked so hard to accomplish what they have and she thought he would never be able to trial off leash and he loves rally.

I am proud of myself when I call the internet company the day they're about to shut the internet off instead of giving up and resigning myself to entropy.

But like, that doesn't make those accomplishments.

Like, set whatever goals you want and be proud of anything, but let's not pretend those are the same as a MACH or UDX or MH. Let's not pretend RAE or ARCHMX is anywhere near as impressive as upper level obedience titles (rally is literally easier in every respect because the scoring is more generous that is literally true).

People take that opinion to mean "your dog is bad and you shouldn't love him."

Look, The Puppy is probably never going to make MH. Maybe he could, with a different trainer, with more access to grounds and birds, with ecollar. But I'm certain of the read I have on my dog. He's just not that good a working dog.

I obviously still love him?? He still gets to sleep in the bed, he still gets to run at the farm, he still gets to be my buddy. We'll keep training because we both enjoy it, but there are genetic limits to how far he can go. Maybe we can stretch them. Maybe he will get a MH title - but that doesn't magically make him into a better dog.

Training science is very very good these days, good training can make poor or mediocre dogs look good - I can make The Puppy look like a much drivier, more biddable dog than he is. Many people have never worked really good dogs.

My friend who got a performance bred dog after her reactive dog is teaching them both nosework. "It's like cheating" with the well bred dog.

More love for good working temperament.
