Pakistan captain Babar Azam returned to form with a record-breaking 158 yet once again found himself on the losing side as England completed a 3-0 One-Day International series clean sweep at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
His highest score at this level saw Azam become the quickest player to 14 hundreds in men’s ODIs as the 26-year-old reached the landmark in 81 innings – three fewer than South Africa’s Hashim Amla.
Together with Mohammad Rizwan he shared a stand of 179, a Pakistan partnership record against England in an ODI.
Yet despite a total of 331/9, Pakistan still suffered a three-wicket defeat after England’s James Vince posted his first international hundred.
Azam, top of the ODI batting rankings, was back in the runs after a score of nought and 19 in the first two games but that did not take the edge of this reverse.
“We started well but were sloppy in the field,” he said. “We will learn from our mistakes.”
While Azam is no stranger to international hundreds, it took Vince six years to register his first on the world stage.
The 30-year-old Hampshire captain at last reached three figures in a 50th innings for his country across all three formats with a...

Can Safaraz make a comeback?
Tumblr media
Pakistan’s one of the successful T20I captains and leading to a triumphant in ICC Champions Trophy saw himself not only losing the captaincy but sit out of the side across all formats. For seeing it as a legitimate move by the authorities, the performances of 33-year-old wicket keeper batsman shall be considered into account. Sarfaraz being the only wicket keeper batsman in last 15 years to get captaincy has done pretty well as far as his batting performances are concerned. He has played 49 tests which are more than Rashid Latif approximately close to Kamran Akmal and 20 less than Moin Khan. These have been the modern greats that Pakistan has produced in last three decades behind the wickets, therefore, their careers are key to assessing the performance of any other Pakistani wicket keeping batsman.
Sarfaraz, in ODIs has represented Pakistan in 116 ODIs which are less than all modern greats as mentioned above. Although, as far as T20s are concerned, he can only be compared and contrasted with Kamran Akmal. Interestingly, till date both Kamran and Sarfraz have played 58 T20Is for Pakistan. Let us take a close look across all formats. Sarfaraz in tests has a batting average of 36.39 and total dismissals including catches and stumping of 167. If compared with other modern greats, he is already ahead as far as batting average is concerned and 40 dismissals behind Kamran, who wasn’t regarded as a great catcher of late. As far as batting averages in ODIs are concerned, he is well ahead of all including Kamran, Moin and Rashid as Sarfaraz averages 33.85 with most number of 50s (18) as a wicket keeper for Pakistan. As far as dismissals are concerned, he is far behind all due to number of matches as all other outnumber him in that category.
Tumblr media
Lastly, talking of T20Is, Kamran batted at the top of the order and was an aggressive batsman but still his average and strike rate has been below Sarfaraz’s. There is also a need to look at the wicket keeping performance of Sarfaraz as that is his primary role. One of the standardized measures among all greats across formats can be used as dismissals per match. Sarfraz averages 3.41 in tests, 1.21 in ODIs and 0.77 in T20Is, which is approximately similar to Moin, Rashid and Kamran with a minor of 0.1 of change. On the other hand, Sarfaraz has been a top performer in big tournaments too as he averages more than Kamran, Moin and Rashid among Asia Cups, World Cups and Champions Trophies. He, like all other great wicket keeping batsmen of Pakistan has played match winning innings across all formats, this proves his presence as a key.
Tumblr media
We need to observe his captaincy record as well, he was made in charge of all the formats, win% in tests has been 30%, ODIs 60% and T20Is 87%. This clearly demonstrates his struggle in tests while pretty decent performances in limited overs formats. Recently, he has been compared with Rizwan, who is a great all round cricketer himself. Rizwan till date has played 6 tests, 32 ODIs, and 18 T20Is. The test career has been quite short and it is difficult to compare, however, in ODIs, he is neck to neck with Sarfaraz, although, T20Is has been quite dismal. By taking a look at all the above statistics. Sarfaraz was struggling in one format continuously while thriving in the other two. More importantly, he had lost only one T20I series during 3 years as captain of the T20 side. Yet he was not removed from captaincy but wasn’t even in any of the format for the next series.
Tumblr media
Sarfaraz may not be that well for tests as performances as captain and a batsman saw a drop, Rizwan has been scoring huge runs in the side matches and A tours, hence, he deserved a chance in tests. However, ODIs and T20Is are where Sarfaraz was doing quite fine as he averages 31.04 in last two years in ODIs and 30.07 in T20Is. His performances go above the standard when Pakistan wins, hence, Sarfaraz could have been part of the batting unit in limited overs cricket. Rizwan has proved his mettle and could have been added as a batsman in ODI team as he is a tremendous outfielder too. Sarfaraz Ahmad surely deserves a chance to make a comeback in T20Is for at least if not the other two. However, it is of the view that he could still be part of limited overs team with Rizwan given full chance in tests and as a batsman in ODIs, although, he is struggling in T20Is.

Rizwan adamant Pakistan can save Test despite following-on 310 runs behind England | Cricket News
SOUTHAMPTON: Mohammad Rizwan insisted all was far from lost for Pakistan after they were made to follow-on 310 runs behind in the third Test against England despite a superb unbeaten century from captain Azhar Ali. Pakistan collapsed to 75-5 on Sunday’s third day before Azhar’s 141 not out guided them to a total of 273. Rizwan played his part with a defiant 53 during a sixth-wicket partnership of 138 with Azhar that kept England at bay.
Nevertheless, Pakistan were still left a huge 310 runs behind England’s first innings 583-8 declared that saw Zak Crawley, whose 267 was his maiden Test century, and Jos Buttler (152) put on 359 for the fifth wicket. It was no surprise when, amid an uncertain forecast, England captain Joe Root enforced the follow-on. But the umpires then decided the light was too dark for Pakistan to begin their second innings even though the Ageas Bowl floodlights were on, a move that ended the day’s play. England great James Anderson took 5-56 as he moved on to 598 Test wickets and the 38-year-old would have become the first paceman to 600 had not three catches been dropped off him after he had taken the new ball. Pakistan, 1-0 down in a three-match contest and facing a first series defeat by England in a decade, will now do well to escape with a draw. But wicketkeeper Rizwan, demonstrating the same defiance he’d shown at the crease, told reporters: “We have a few batsmen who can score big, if we can take a 150-run lead then it will be tough for England.” England’s Dom Bess, however, said: “We’re in a great position. There’s a little bit of weather around, but you’d like to think with the bowling attack we have, that we can produce the goods.” Under-pressure skipper Azhar had managed just 38 runs in three previous innings this series yet on Sunday he became just the fifth Pakistan batsman to score 6,000 Test runs. Azhar, an lbw candidate for much of this series, generally kept his head still as he tried to avoid playing round his front pad. He batted for nearly seven hours, facing 272 balls, with 21 fours in what was his 17th century in 81 Tests. “If you watched this innings closely, it was a superb innings,” said Rizwan. “He worked on his head position…This was a fighting innings.” Anderson, who’d reduced Pakistan to 24-3 overnight, needed just six balls Sunday to have the struggling Asad Shafiq edging limply to Root at first slip. That took Anderson to 597 Test wickets, with the only bowlers to have taken 600 a trio of retired spinners — Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (800 wickets), Australia’s Shane Warne (708) and India’s Anil Kumble (619). “He’s the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) isn’t he?,” said Bess of Anderson. “The GOAT of bowling and England’s greatest. “I guess there was chat about potential retirement and then he comes back and absolutely tears it up. That just shows how good he is.” Bess himself had Fawad Alam well caught by wicketkeeper Buttler who, by his own admission, had under-performed behind the stumps this season. Rizwan, impressive with both gloves and bat this series, went to a second successive fifty by lofting Bess for six before he was well caught down the leg side by Buttler. “I work hard and I have belief that I carry to the crease,” said Rizwan. “I don’t care what the score is and who is bowling because I know I have done the hard work and the Almighty will reward me for my hard work.”

South Africa vs Pakistan, 3rd ODI, Fantasy Cricket Match Prediction
Pakistan’s batting is very weak and inconsistent although their bowling is quite good. South Africa is the better side in all departments of the game especially while playing in South Africa. South Africa and Pakistan are level after two matches in this three-game series — Pakistan winning by five wickets in Port Elizabeth, before the hosts won by the same margin in a low-scoring game in Durban.
After being a little subdued in the opening match against Pakistan, their bowlers came out aggressively and with an agenda to bounce out the Pakistanis. Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier bounced out the batsmen with pace while Phehlukwayo relied on changeups to keep the batsmen guessing. The result was a decimation of the Pakistani top-order. The South Africans would have been disappointed to have let Sarfaraz Ahmed and Hasan Ali rescue the batting and get their side to a fighting total. De Kock could take the gloves ahead of Heinrich Klaasen — who was bowled first ball last time — and move up the order too. Tabraiz Shamsi could continue as the spin-bowling option after his three wickets last time out — they are unlikely to play more than one at Centurion, however. One player that has taken the opportunities given to him with both hands is Rassie van der Dussen. He followed up his score of 93 with an 80 not out and helped his side navigate a tricky chase. In fact, the lack of runs for Hendricks, Amla, du Plessis, and Klaasen gave Pakistan more than a hint at victory. Van der Dussen played a crucial hand along with David Miller and later Andile Phehlukwayo to ensure South Africa maintained its winning run. South Africa was dominant in the last match and is only going to be boosted by the addition of two of the best ODI players on the planet.
For Pakistan, Hussain Talat made his ODI debut in the second match, as he and Shaheen Afridi replaced Imad Wasim and Usman Shinwari. Imam-ul-Haq continued his good ODI form in the first match, top-scoring for Pakistan with 86 on their way to a five-wicket win. He had previously scored two half-centuries during the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup too. Opening partner Fakhar Zaman also came into this series in good form, including scores of 88 and 65 in the final two matches against New Zealand. He has made two bright starts so far and will want to turn that into a big score. Likewise, Babar Azam, who scored 46 and 92 in those final two against New Zealand and scored 49 in the first game of this series. He still averages above 50 in ODIs, having hit eight 100s and nine 50s in 56 matches. Shaheen Afridi took nine wickets in the series against New Zealand and, after wickets in the tests too, claimed 3–44 in the second ODI — Reeza Hendricks, Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis his victims. Mohammad Amir is pushing for a recall and took 12 wickets in the test series.

Pitch Report:
The pitch at SuperSport Park is excellent for batting. The highest score recorded here is 392 by South Africa against Pakistan and the highest score chased down is 319 vt South Africa against England. We expect a high scoring match to be played out if rain does not intervene.
Prediction:
South Africa is going to be strengthened by the addition of Quinton de Kock and Dale Steyn to the squad. Their batsmen are in form and the bowlers are dominating the Pakistani batsmen. We expect them to win again.
Conclusion:
The South Africans are going to be charged up and are only going to come harder at Pakistan. They should also be welcoming back Dale Steyn and Quinton de Kock back into the squad. Can Pakistan find the spark that saw them win the first ODI or can that success be put down to conditions helpful to spin only? We’ll find out.

Hello and welcome back for the start of another Test series in a ‘bio-secure’ bubble, after England successfully hosted West Indies to mark the return of cricket from the pandemic-hit break. Joe Root’s men won that three-match series 2-1. Up from today, is the Test assignment against Pakistan, who will get their first taste of the conditions while playing in the world that is still under the grip of coronavirus. The hosts are sweating over the fitness of their hero against West Indies, Ben Stokes, whose bowling fitness is under the scanner; but England will definitely explore the possibility of playing the all-rounder as a specialist batsman before ruling him out. Here’s the Match Preview: England know another sluggish start to a Test campaign could prove costly as they go in search of a first series win over Pakistan in a decade. Wednesday sees a three-match contest get underway with the first Test at Old Trafford. And while England can point to recent series victories over most of their rivals, their last such success against Pakistan was back in 2010. That campaign, however, was overshadowed by a ‘spot-fixing’ scandal at Lord’s which led to bans and jail terms for then Pakistan captain Salman Butt as well as pacemen Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir. England have lost the first Test in eight of their last 10 series — including during last month’s 2-1 win over the West Indies that marked international cricket’s return from the coronavirus lockdown. It is a statistic they are all well aware of, with in-form England pacemen Chris Woakes admitting: “I’d love to be able to put my finger on it and I’m sure the management and the team would as well. “It’s not coincidence but it’s almost, it is just a coincidence that we can keep losing that first Test match. “But we want to put that right,” he added, with the eyes of the global cricket community set to turn to Manchester in the absence of any other major international fixtures outside of England amid the pandemic. Both of Pakistan’s past two series in England — 2016 and 2018 — ended in draws, which should encourage the tourists this time even though they go into the first Test on the back of just a couple of intra-squad warm-up fixtures compared to their ‘match-hardened’ hosts. “We’ve had good preparations and team bonding,” said Pakistan coach Misbah-ul-Haq on Monday. “Still we feel there is always a slight nervousness when you just play Test cricket after a long, long time (away),” he added ahead of his side’s first Test in six months. Misbah accepted that how his batsmen coped with James Anderson and Stuart Broad — who now both have more than 500 Test wickets each after Broad reached the landmark against the West Indies — would go a long way to determining the outcome of the series. But the former Pakistan captain was also excited by a pace attack that includes the youthful promise of teenage rising star Naseem Shah as well as the accurate Mohammad Abbas, and towering left-armer Shaheen Shah Afridi. Naseem has impressed Pakistan fast-bowling great turned bowling Waqar Younis and Misbah so much when they saw him in action in Lahore, the coach said they had no qualms about fast-tracking a “complete bowler” into Pakistan’s side in Australia last year. Naseem became the youngest bowler to take a Test hat-trick against Bangladesh in February and he showed a liking for English conditions with 10 wickets in the two practice matches at Derby. “He is one who could win a Test match on his own,” said Misbah of Naseem. Pakistan, however, could still deploy two spinners at Old Trafford in Yasir Shah and Shadab Khan. The West Indies failed to post a single individual century in their recent series. Pakistan will hope the likes of Abid Ali, the first man to score a hundred on both Test and one-day international debut, Shan Masood, Azhar Ali, Babar Asam and Asad Shafiq can provide the runs they need. Meanwhile England must decide whether to stick with four quicks in their XI after Ben Stokes couldn’t bowl in the West Indies decider because of a quad injury. The star all-rounder was, however, reported to have bowled with good pace in the nets on Monday.
