Do we need all those car manufacturing companies? We will need public transit with more capacity because older people are less likely to be “able” to drive a car or truck. Fewer school children, so what do we do with those school buildings? (Convert them to long-term care facilities makes the most sense.) And so on, and so on.

But, we will need fewer minerals dug out of the ground, less fossil fuel sucked out of the Earth (which will happen anyway as the economy electrifies), fewer acres devoted to GMO corn and soy so more acres for our co-inhabitants of the Earth, thus alleviating the biodiversity and extinction crises. Less crap spewed into the air and water as the manufacturing base downsizes and fewer acres are needed for agriculture. And so on and so on. 

So, the challenges are there, and so are the benefits. Let’s see if our politicians are smart enough to leverage the benefits to reduce the pain of the challenges. I’m betting that, at least here in the US, so long as the republican party breathes, we will continue to be stupid and continue to bet on growth and thus design our policies to go in the wrong direction.

She is Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Sheffield where she is co-director of the Centre for Poetry and Poetics.
