Comprehensive Guide to Fence Maintenance in Westchester, NY
Understanding Westchester's Climate Impact
Westchester’s climate plays a significant role in how your fence ages. The humid summers can cause wood to warp or develop mold, while the freezing winters can lead to cracking and splitting, particularly in wooden and vinyl fences. Metal fences, although durable, are not immune to rust, especially with the frequent exposure to moisture and salt in the winter.
Routine Inspection: The First Step
The first step in fence maintenance is conducting regular inspections. Fence Maintenance Westchester NY At least twice a year, walk along the fence line to check for signs of damage, wear, and tear. Look for loose boards, rusting nails, peeling paint, or any areas where the fence may be leaning. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent small problems from becoming larger, more costly repairs.
Wood Fence Maintenance
Wooden fences are popular in Westchester for their classic look, but they require the most maintenance. Start by cleaning the fence annually. Use a mixture of water and mild detergent to scrub away dirt, mold, and mildew. A power washer can be effective, but use it carefully to avoid damaging the wood.
After cleaning, inspect the wood for any signs of rot or insect damage. Replace any damaged boards immediately. Applying a sealant or stain every few years can help protect the wood from moisture and UV rays, extending its life. It’s also important to keep plants and shrubs trimmed back from the fence to prevent moisture build-up, which can lead to rot.
Vinyl Fence Maintenance
Vinyl fences are low-maintenance, but they are not maintenance-free. Regular cleaning with soap and water is usually sufficient to keep them looking new. However, vinyl can become brittle in the cold and may crack if exposed to freezing temperatures. Inspect for cracks or loose panels and repair them quickly to prevent further damage.
While vinyl does not rot like wood, it can develop mildew or algae in shady areas. A mixture of vinegar and water or a specialized cleaner can help remove these stains. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or tools that could scratch the surface.
Metal Fence Maintenance
Metal fences, including aluminum and wrought iron, are durable and often require less maintenance than wood. However, rust is the biggest concern. Fence Company Rockland NY Regularly inspect your metal fence for signs of rust, particularly at the joints and areas where the paint may have chipped.
To prevent rust, apply a rust-inhibitive primer and paint every few years. If rust has already formed, use a wire brush to remove it, and then apply a rust converter before repainting. For aluminum fences, which don’t rust but can corrode, a simple cleaning with a non-abrasive cleaner will keep them looking their best.

Termite Protection for Your Home
A professional termite treatment protects your home from these wood-destroying pests. Look for discarded wings, mud tubes, and other signs of an infestation.
Eliminate potential food sources by keeping dead trees, stumps and lumber away from your house. Keep gutters and downspouts clear to prevent moisture buildup. Also, ensure your crawl space is dry and knock on non-hollow walls to hear a thudding sound.
Liquid Barrier Treatments
Liquid barrier treatments offer quick mortality to any termite protection that passes through the treated soil, allowing for quicker termite control than baiting. However, they require professional installation to ensure that the EPA-approved chemical is applied properly to prevent gaps or other areas where termites can enter.
A liquid barrier treatment creates a “treated zone” between the ground and wood in your home’s foundation. This is different from repellent products that rely on creating a complete barrier to work – one gap or crack will allow the termites through.
Your trained Termidor installer will use the active ingredient fipronil to create a treated zone around your building. Termidor works by using the incessant foraging behavior of worker termites against them: as they groom each other or share food through trophallaxis, they unknowingly introduce the slow-acting pesticide into the colony. It spreads throughout the group and eventually kills them. The same process can also be used to treat sills, floor joists and other structural wood in your home’s walls.
Termite Stakes
Termite stakes can help prevent an infestation by killing existing Formosan subterranean termites. The stakes contain a slow acting ingredient that penetrates and impacts the colony. Spectracide Terminate Termite Detection & Killing Stakes contain the same active ingredient used in professional Sentricon Termite Baiting Systems.
Regularly inspect your home for termite protection requirements nsw activity. Signs of infestation include a hollow sound when you knock on wood, bubbling or blistered paint and mud tunnels along foundation walls. In addition, swarming (flying) termites are another indication of a termite infestation.
The Entomology Department of the University of Kentucky frequently receives inquiries regarding a do-it-yourself termite control product called Terminate, which is sold in retail stores throughout the United States. This product is advertised as offering year-round protection from Formosan subterranean termite attack. Its low retail price of under $100 per box of bait stakes is tempting to homeowners. However, a review of the product label, adapted from a UofK Cooperative Extension Service bulletin for consumers, reveals significant limitations.
Full Termite Inspections
A full termite inspection is an examination of your entire home by a licensed termite specialist. The process can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
During an inspection, your specialist will look for the telltale signs of a termite infestation. This includes mud tubes on cinder block walls in basements and crawl spaces as well as damaged wood around utility access points like window and door frames. The inspector will also probe wood with a screwdriver to look for any weakness.
Regular termite inspections are vital to protecting your home from these destructive pests. It’s best to get an annual inspection if you live in an older house, but newer homes can suffer from termite damage too. To help ensure the effectiveness of your termite treatment, make sure that dogs are removed from the area and that there are no plants or other obstructions near the foundation. If you suspect a problem, call your termite control company immediately for an inspection.
Contact Us
Termite protection cost if you suspect termite activity in your Long Island, Westchester, or Northern New York property contact us now to request a free inspection. Damage caused by termites is typically not covered by homeowners insurance policies so the earlier you catch an infestation, the better.
Termite damage can lead to structural problems, including warped doors and windows. They can also chew through electrical wiring, causing potential fire hazards and costly repairs.
Swarmers (winged reproductive termites) and discarded wings found near doors and windows are common signs of an infestation. Also look for blistering paint, mud tubes, and hollow-sounding wood.
Liquid barrier treatments are one of the most popular forms of termite control and can be applied to soil around your home or building. This treatment creates a protective barrier that termites can’t cross, deterring them from entering your home or business. Bait systems are another effective option for termite control. They contain enticing baits that termites consume and share with their colony, eventually eliminating them.

Brian Hesse: The Leader Ushering Transformative Change in the Aluminium Sector
Tumblr media
The qualities of foresight, resilience, and strength in a leader are paramount, regardless of the industry in question. A leader’s ability to navigate challenges, foresee opportunities, and exhibit unwavering strength in the face of adversity defines the trajectory of not only their career but also the success of the ventures they spearhead. And when we talk about the aluminium sector, one name that exemplifies all these qualities is Brian Hesse. Synonymous with entrepreneurial prowess and strategic vision in the aluminium sector, Brian has not just steered PerenniAL towards transformative change, but also worked relentlessly to annihilate obstacles for the industry as a whole.
From an evident foresight during the Management Buyout (MBO) of Rusal America Corp on April 29, 2022 leading to the birth of PerenniAL to helming the reigns of the company as President and CEO, Hesse’s resilience and strength were instrumental in not only navigating challenges but also in setting the stage for a new chapter in the company’s journey.
Embarking on the PerenniAL Journey: A Strategic Vision Reimagined
PerenniAL’s genesis was rooted in strategic foresight and a pursuit of growth. Hesse, having previously served as President and CEO of Rusal America, brought a wealth of experience to PerenniAL. His tenure at Rusal America from May 2019 to April 2022 showcased his leadership acumen in managing all aspects of a business that generated $950 million in annual revenue. Hesse was pivotal in reestablishing and rebranding Rusal’s American operations, leading the U.S. team through a remarkable journey of growth and transformation.
A Legacy of Leadership: Brian Hesse’s Professional Journey
Brian Hesse’s extensive career paints a portrait of a seasoned industry leader. His roles at various prominent organisations include Co-Founder and CEO of The PerenniAL Group Inc., President and Chief Executive Officer of Rusal America Corporation, VP of Sales and Marketing at Vedanta, Global Sales Director at Aleris International, Director of Global Accounts at Ryerson, Sales Manager of Transportation & Industry at Alcan Global (now Constellium), and multiple commercial roles at Ryerson spanning from 1996 to 2008.
Hesse’s professional journey is punctuated by a series of remarkable achievements. Under his leadership, Rusal America’s aluminium sales volumes soared from 129,000 metric tons per year to an impressive 346,000 metric tons per year in 2022. At Vedanta, Hesse played a pivotal role in building, establishing, and leading the North American operations, generating over $500 million in sales within a year and $6.3 million in profit. Throughout his career, Hesse developed, entered, and managed industry verticals and international markets for multiple companies, showcasing a keen ability to navigate global business landscapes. Given his extensive experience in the Aluminum sector, Hesse was also selected as a speaker at the prestigious 2019 and 2021 Harbor Global Aluminum Summit on Aluminum Strategic Market Topics.
Beyond Business: Brian Hesse’s Commitment to Community and Family
‘PerenniAL shapes a sustainable future, sourcing low-carbon products for our customers, aligning with environmental responsibility and top-quality standards’ – Brian Hesse
Beyond the boardroom, Brian Hesse dedicates his time to philanthropy and community service. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Westchester County, NY, a position he assumed in 2022. Additionally, he is a valued Board Member of the Northwest Missouri State University Foundation Board, his alma mater.
Navigating Setbacks and Proposing Solutions: A Leader’s Perspective
Every leader’s path to greatness is characterised by setbacks they have to conquer. Hesse’s path was no different. Hesse faced a significant setback when punitive tariffs were imposed on Russian aluminium imports. The 200% tariff, initiated in response to geopolitical tensions, not only disrupted the supply chain but also posed challenges for American businesses, including PerenniAL. This tariff proved to be far-reaching, causing a significant shift in the dynamics of aluminium trade. Russian imports to the U.S. plummeted from 150,000 metric tons per year to zero.
The tariff, implemented as a response to Russian military actions, failed to achieve its intended objectives. Instead, it left PerenniAL in a precarious position, exacerbated existing challenges, resulting in a million-ton import deficit of raw aluminium to the U.S. The impact on the American aluminium industry was far-reaching, introducing supply insecurity, escalating transportation costs, triggering price hikes, and contributing to inflation. Hesse reflects on this experience, contemplating alternative solutions that extend beyond being a victim of governmental policies. For him, innovation was the key to emerge from this challenging global trade scenario.
A Shift in Perspective: Proposing Solutions to Lawmakers
Reflecting on the challenges posed by governmental policies, Hesse contemplates a shift in perspective. Rather than being a victim of policies causing a deficit, he suggests conveying solutions to lawmakers that address the problem of adequate sourcing of consistent imported, replacement aluminium. His proposal includes focusing U.S. foreign aid to promote equatorial countries’ exploitation of bauxite and its conversion into exportable aluminium raw material. This, he believes, could promote a positive and useful foreign assistance objective while guaranteeing adequate supplies of aluminium for import into the American market and expects to explore this further through additional upcoming industry forums.
Shaping the Fabric of Company Culture
‘PerenniAL leads in aluminium excellence, prioritising customer needs, ensuring a responsible supply chain for enduring success in the industry’ – Brian Hesse
According to Hesse, company culture is a reflection of leadership. As the CEO, he recognises the pivotal role he plays in setting the tone for the entire organisation. PerenniAL’s culture is characterised by a constant, disciplined, and imaginative vision that permeates every aspect of the company. Hesse asserts, ‘Company culture starts with the CEO and trickles down throughout the enterprise. The team coalesces because its leadership exhibits a constant, disciplined and imaginative vision for the company and how it must handle itself with everyone it encounters. My commitment to exemplifying that vision every day, is the model of behaviour that became our company’s culture.’
Building a Thriving Customer Base: A Covenant of Trust
Defining and pursuing customers necessary for success and capturing their business are two distinct pursuits. According to Hesse, PerenniAL’s success is rooted in suppliers and customers making a critical decision to include PerenniAL in their business world. The covenant of business relationships is treated as a bond of trust and legacy, with a high priority placed on nurturing and protecting it.
Invaluable to Hesse was the early experience in technical product sales, instilling the recognition that customers expect priority and attention to be given to their specific needs. Ignoring this, in his opinion, is what destroys many enterprises.
Strategies to Motivate the Team: A Personalised Approach
Every member of a team is different and is motivated differently, according to Hesse. An essential part of his function is to know his colleagues and all employees well and understand what motivates them. Each is an individual and each requires attention and total support. One size does not fit all. The key is ensuring every member has an understanding of the strategy, moral compass, and expectations for their successful effort to the well-being of the enterprise. At its simplest definition, as owner and CEO, Hesse’s job is to be the servant and supporter to their needs as they apply their unique skill and knowledge sets that make them valuable contributors to the company.
Discernible Patterns of Entrepreneurial Success
When asked about entrepreneurial success, Hesse emphasises the existence of a pattern. According to him, a tight strategic focus, a consistently disciplined strategy day in and day out, are key elements to master. He further adds, ‘That said, that strategic focus must be flexible enough to be changed on a dime, aware of situations beyond personal control that screams “handle me” every moment. A precise plan is required along with the executive ability and insight to quickly adjust and fine tune directions.’
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs: Focus, Team Building, and Adaptability
Hesse’s entrepreneurial journey culminates in valuable advice for those aspiring to follow in his footsteps. He underscores the importance of strategic focus, building a strong team that doesn’t require micromanagement, and the ability to adapt swiftly. These principles, drawn from his own experiences, form a blueprint for success in the entrepreneurial landscape.
Future Aspirations: PerenniAL’s Journey to Industry Giant
Looking ahead, Hesse envisions PerenniAL becoming a giant in the aluminium industry. The company’s trajectory includes expanding into more upstream business activities, solidifying its position as a trusted player in the market. This aspiration echoes PerenniAL’s commitment to growth and excellence under Hesse’s leadership.

Exterior paint 2 or 3 coats

#Exterior paint 2 or 3 coats how to
#Exterior paint 2 or 3 coats professional
On the other hand, if you use a paint sprayer, the paint that gets applied isn’t nearly as thick as a brush, or a roller, requiring the least amount of time. While a paintbrush may feel more comfortable to hold and dip directly into your paint, it’s application is thicker, and will take longer to dry. Paint drying time depends on the type of paint, sheen, thickness of application and application method.Īndrew Wilson, a contractor with Contractor Advisorly, says there is much more paint when using a brush. For the initial drying time, it usually takes 30 to 90 minutes to be dry to the touch. A paint roller is best for smooth to semi-smooth walls and will apply paint in a thinner coat. Your dry time will also vary greatly depending on how you choose to paint your wall. Thickness and application of your paint can directly affect how long it takes your paint to dry. The Process of Paint Drying Dry Time for the First Coat
#Exterior paint 2 or 3 coats professional
Matte paint dries faster than glossier paint, in fact, using a glossier paint can add up to an hour to your total dry time.Īccording to professional DIYer and interior designer Cara Newhart, there are three important time frames when it comes to paint drying: dry time, recoat time and cure time. A thicker paint (like two-in-one paint and primer) takes longer to paint (and dry) because it’s significantly thicker. Water-based paints dry faster than oil-based paints because they’re thinner, and easily affected by airflow. There are three primary types of paint: water-based, latex and oil-based. A few things to consider are temperature, humidity, type of paint and finish. While the painting process could technically be completed overnight you want to ensure that your paint is thoroughly dry before moving forward. According to design writer Emily David, “with modern convalescent paint technology, the paint dries quicker than ever.” This research can even help prevent uneven textures or visible imperfections during the process.īrooke Grasley, founder of Restore Decor and More, says as a general rule-in ideal conditions- you can usually apply the second coat within two to four hours of the first coat.
#Exterior paint 2 or 3 coats how to
Trying to figure out how long to wait can be tricky, and a little boring, but totally worth it in the end.Īccording to designer Anita Mullane, knowing the type of paint you’re using goes a long way in understanding how to get the best results. Sometimes, you just can’t wait to re-hang your art or move your furniture back into place after a fresh coat-but you should. Deciding to give your walls a new coat of paint is exciting, but the anticipation of waiting for them to properly dry can be torture. If you have questions about your Westchester or Fairfield County home, please contact us at A.G. Try using a tinted primer to smooth your transition from the old to new color! Talk To a Professional Painter About Your Exterior Painting Goals If you’re painting a lighter color over a darker, on the other hand, you may need more than two coats. This is particularly true if you are painting a dark color over a lighter, existing one, as you’re guaranteed to have good coverage. Two coats is typically all that’s needed, if you’re painting over a well-prepped, primed surface. So, How Many Coats of Exterior Paint Should You Apply? Wood rot repair, patching, sanding, cleaning, and more… All of these contribute to your paint’s ability to adhere well and truly endure. Part of the value you receive when you hire a professional painting company is the benefit of skilled, experienced, thorough surface prep. The success or failure of your exterior painting endeavors is largely determined before you even open a paint can. Don’t Forget To Thoroughly Prepare the Surface Before Painting Exterior paint provides too much essential protection and practical value to hold back on the application.Īs you decide how many coats you really need to get the job done, there are a few key factors to keep in mind. You don’t want to overdo it, but you also certainly don’t want to apply too thin a coating either. Color, brand ( invest in high-quality paint !), quantity, and, of course, how many coats to apply. As you plan your exterior painting update, you have a lot to consider.

How Long Should You Wait After Washing Walls for Painting?
Are you planning to give your walls a fresh coat of paint? Before you start, it's essential to properly prepare your walls for painting to ensure a smooth and durable finish. But how long should you wait after washing walls before painting? This is a common question we receive at MGP Painting.
The drying time can significantly impact the quality of your paint job, influencing how well the paint adheres to the surface and how it looks after drying. Understanding the factors that affect drying time and following best practices can make a big difference in the final result of your painting project.
Tumblr media
Why Do You Need to Wash Walls Before Painting?
Properly washing your walls before painting is an essential step in achieving a professional and long-lasting finish. Over time, walls accumulate dust, dirt, grease, and even old paint residues, all of which can affect the adhesion and appearance of new paint.
Here are the main reasons why washing walls is a crucial pre-painting step:
Removing Dirt, Grime, and Old Paint
Walls can gather a lot of surface contaminants, including dirt, grime, and old paint flakes. If these are not removed before painting, they can cause the new paint to peel or blister, leading to an uneven and unattractive finish.
Ensuring a Smooth and Even Paint Application
Cleaning the walls helps to create a smooth surface, which is essential for an even coat of paint. Any remaining debris or residue can create bumps and imperfections that are noticeable after the paint dries.
Improving Paint Adhesion and Durability
A clean surface ensures that the paint adheres properly to the wall. This improves the durability and longevity of the paint job, helping to prevent issues like peeling and chipping. Proper adhesion is especially important in high-traffic areas or on walls that are frequently touched.
Factors Affecting Drying Time
The drying time after washing your walls can vary based on several factors. Understanding these can help you determine the optimal time to wait before starting your paint job.
Type of Cleaner Used
Soap and Water: Using a mild soap and water solution is common for cleaning walls. However, soap can leave a residue that needs to be thoroughly rinsed off and allowed to dry, which can extend drying time.
Specialized Cleaning Products: Products designed specifically for pre-paint cleaning often dry faster than soap and water. They also tend to leave less residue, which can speed up the drying process.
Environmental Conditions
Humidity Levels: High humidity can significantly slow down the drying process. In contrast, low humidity levels help walls dry faster.
Temperature: Warmer temperatures generally accelerate drying, while cooler temperatures can slow it down. Maintaining a warm, well-ventilated environment can help speed up the process.
Wall Material
Drywall: Drywall typically dries relatively quickly, especially if only lightly cleaned with a damp cloth.
Plaster: Plaster walls can absorb more moisture and may take longer to dry compared to drywall.
Concrete: Concrete walls can also hold moisture longer, requiring more time to dry thoroughly.
If you're uncertain about the drying time or need expert advice, contact MGP Painting for a professional recommendation and assistance with your painting project.
Tips for Faster Drying
If you're eager to start painting but want to ensure your walls are properly dry, there are several strategies you can employ to speed up the drying process. Here are some effective tips to help your walls dry faster:
Increasing Ventilation
Open Windows and Doors: Allowing fresh air to circulate through the room can help moisture evaporate more quickly. Open windows and doors to create a cross-breeze that enhances airflow.
Use Fans: Place fans around the room to direct airflow onto the walls. Oscillating fans can cover a larger area and speed up the drying process.
Using Fans or Dehumidifiers
Fans: In addition to increasing ventilation, fans can be strategically placed to target particularly damp areas. Box fans and oscillating fans are especially effective.
Dehumidifiers: High humidity levels can slow down drying. Using a dehumidifier in the room can reduce humidity and accelerate drying by removing excess moisture from the air.
Timing Your Painting Project to Coincide with Dry Weather

Potential Issues of Painting Too Soon
Painting over walls that haven't fully dried can lead to various problems that affect the quality and durability of your paint job. It's crucial to allow sufficient drying time to avoid these potential issues:
Peeling or Bubbling Paint
Insufficient drying time can trap moisture beneath the paint surface. This trapped moisture can cause the paint to bubble or peel away from the wall over time, resulting in an uneven and unsightly finish.
Uneven Finish
Wet walls can affect how paint adheres and dries, leading to an uneven appearance once the paint sets. This can create visible streaks or patches that detract from the overall aesthetic of the room.
Reduced Paint Adhesion and Longevity
Properly dried walls provide a stable surface for paint adhesion. Painting too soon can compromise this adhesion, causing the paint to wear away more quickly and requiring premature repainting.
Conclusion
Properly preparing your walls before painting by allowing adequate drying time is crucial for achieving a flawless and long-lasting finish. By following recommended drying times, checking for dryness with simple tests, and employing strategies to speed up drying, you can ensure that your paint adheres smoothly and evenly. When it was announced that The Rosie O'Donnell Show would be back for one night only with a guest list of about 15 million Broadway talents, many of us wondered, would it be a return to the glory days of her multiple Emmy-winning daytime talk show or more like her ill-fated attempt to resuscitate the primetime variety format on NBC in 2008. It turned out to borrow from both those predecessors while evolving into something completely different — a low-tech lovefest that felt like eavesdropping on a group chat among friends looking out for one another in a time of need.
It was spontaneous, messy and blighted by some of the worst audio glitches imaginable. Yet it was often affectingly intimate, and even over an endurance-testing three-and-a-half commercial-free hours, also strangely addictive. The lack of slickness seemed to carry through to the relaxed manner of the guests, and their refreshing unpretentiousness.
Conceived by actor-producer (and occasional tech-support helpmate) Erich Bergen and live-streamed on Broadway.com and the website's YouTube channel, the show was a benefit for The Actors Fund, the charitable organization founded in 1882 that supports performers and behind-the-scenes theater workers. It raised more than half-a-million dollars, O'Donnell announced at the end of the marathon, sitting in a Hamilton hoodie and offering a champagne toast in a glass emblazoned with the face of Barbra Streisand.
She conducted the entire show from behind a laptop in her New Jersey garage, its floor spattered with the paint spillage of countless craft projects. "I'm a little bit of a Broadway nerd, I admit it," said O'Donnell, establishing her dual role as host and superfan.
Part of the show's unique pleasure was seeing favorite Broadway performers chilling in their own homes, almost all of them dressed down, with little visible attention to makeup or hair, and zero concern about unflattering angles. It was a great equalizer, proving that even artists who can hold packed theaters in the palm of their hands with a song are housebound and trying to make the best of a bad situation just like the rest of us — staying close to their families, killing time, learning to cook, wondering how long this unnerving isolation will last. Or how much longer we can put off that shower.
It was kind of comforting to see Idina Menzel sitting by her microwave and confessing, "I guess I'm going a little bonkers," while lamenting a failed lasagna attempt and sharing the challenges of homeschooling her son when she's no math genius. Likewise, hearing Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker talk about watching Columbo reruns or catching up on The Crown, while SJP begged for no spoilers on the final episode of The Sopranos, which she may now get to at last. Seeing Annette Bening on her Los Angeles balcony wearing a "Make America Kind Again" baseball cap was as much a tonic as watching Neil Patrick Harris do a card trick with his adorable twins. And who doesn't want to meet Gloria and Emilio Estefan's cute rescue dogs or hear about Lin-Manuel Miranda's kids' reaction to their first exposure to Singin' in the Rain?
Then there were the musical interludes.
Where else could you catch Patti LuPone, in magnificent voice, singing the urgently upbeat 1930s standard "A Hundred Years From Today," unaccompanied while sitting by the jukebox in her basement? Or Kelli O'Hara nestled into an armchair honoring Stephen Sondheim's 90th birthday by wrapping her crystalline soprano around "Take Me to the World," a hymn to unity from Evening Primrose? Or husband and wife Audra McDonald and Will Swenson duetting on the Charlie Chaplin evergreen, "Smile," from their Westchester living room? Or Darren Criss pouring his heart into another Sondheim classic about the desire for connection, "Being Alive," from Company, accompanying himself in a lovely pop arrangement on acoustic guitar from the sofa of his Los Angeles home? And while sound problems plagued Barry Manilow's selection of hits, ending with "I Made It Through the Rain," I was tickled to see his Judy Garland Kleenex dispenser.
Many of the song choices were thoughtfully apropos of the current crisis, offering comforting reassurance of the eventual return of resilience and togetherness while people in major cities all over the country self-isolate as the infection rate of the coronavirus pandemic continues to climb. Maybe Tituss Burgess at his home keyboard singing "The Glory of Love" is exactly the kind of uplift we all need right now.
Even in the seemingly random numbers, the entire enterprise was characterized by a spirit of generosity and sharing.
Kristin Chenoweth celebrated a Starbucks romance in "Taylor the Latte Boy." Matthew Morrison goofed it up on ukulele to a mashup of "The Bare Necessities" and "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" from his Disney Dreamin' album. Alan Menken whipped through a medley of his songs from The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Little Shop of Horrors, among others, at the piano. Ben Platt, also at the keyboard, did Bob Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love." And Adrienne Warren, the sensational star of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, growled out "Simply the Best" from her bathtub. That was on the third attempt during a particularly troublesome audio patch, by which time her bubbles were history.
Prompted by O'Donnell, more than one guest reminded viewers that The Actors Fund is not just about Broadway artists pulling star salaries but also stagehands, makeup artists, wigmakers and ushers who work in what is very much a gig economy. The organization provides emergency financial assistance, social services, affordable housing, healthcare and insurance counseling and addiction support.
"Everything's a one-off," said Tony-winning actor Brian Stokes Mitchell, who serves as chairman of The Actors Fund. "That's how we get by, and many people are living on the edge right now."
"We're all just one, two, maybe three paychecks away from bankruptcy," added Billy Porter, whose mother is in an Actors Fund nursing home. "In this community, our whole job description is insecurity," said Judith Light.
Porter, along with Lea Salonga and longtime activist Light recalled how Broadway was on the frontlines of another life-threatening struggle during the early days of the AIDS crisis. All of them urged viewers to stay strong and take the time to reflect on the value of solidarity.
While O'Donnell has never been shy about her opposition to Donald Trump and everything he stands for, the show was remarkably light on politics, with just the occasional dig slipping through. She opened with a little celebratory "Yay!" while admitting she had missed the president's daily coronavirus press update, and then explained that she and her guests were not there to talk Trump. When Harvey Fierstein, O'Donnell's 2005 stage husband in Fiddler on the Roof, reminded her of all the election work still to be done, she said, "Let's all just know, we deserve a leader who tells the truth." And the delays in making coronavirus testing more widely available prompted a comment that the government should have gotten busy on that back in January when the writing was already on the wall.
Mostly, however, the hastily revamped Rosie O'Donnell Show was about bringing people together at this time of anxiety and isolation, as the host reconnected with artists whom she has championed since her reign as the Queen of Nice. "Everyone in the community loves you," she told Chita Rivera in a particularly effusive greeting. "You are our queen mother!"
Many of the performers would have been decompressing after rehearsals or Sunday matinees if the Broadway shutdown hadn't happened — Criss in American Buffalo, Broderick and Parker in Plaza Suite, Warren in Tina, Lauren Patten and Elizabeth Stanley in Jagged Little Pill. Sunday would have been LuPone's opening night in the gender-flipped revival of Company. Gavin Creel, who abruptly ended his London run in Waitress to fly home and is in isolation in a cabin in upstate New York, revealed the fear that he might have contracted the virus, given that several others in the cast have fallen ill, with one of them testing positive.
The show bridged the gap separating us from artists whose work we normally experience on the other side of the footlights. Most of us will never again get to see Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber exchange greetings in song on the birthday the two composers happen to share. From those celebrated veterans to rising-star newbies, the common denominator here was everybody facing the crisis just like us, reaching out a hand of friendship, albeit from a mandatory safe distance.
