hi i read some of ur posts about retelling and i completely agree with ur view. just wanted to ask you what do you think about people who worship greek gods, i find it super weird when they do it with gods from my culture (im Italian so the Roman ones). im referring more to people on tiktok who seem to know mythology only for percy jackson and keep altars to diana, hecate and other deities. i don't know if you feel the same way lol. congrats for the blog btw its super interesting
Hello! Sorry for being two weeks late to answer this 😞 I'm excited when people engage with my culture in a genuine way and they're open to learning and listening but this comes into juxtaposition with how the people you mention approach Greek culture and figures. The fandomification and commercialization of Greek mythology in the colonialist spirit of N. Europe and N. America are discussions that make people from those regions uneasy still, since the truth will make their western worldview collapse. For all their anti-colonialist mindset and deconstruction, you can see their brain glitching like "W-what do you mean the Greek religion and gods are... Greek in culture? Shock!")
So, yeah, those who approach my gods as if they are dolls to play with or characters to crush on but on a spiritual level, make me uncomfortable as well. Not to mention that sometimes even the most careful and well meaning ones engage in colonialist grabbing from other cultures (the Greek one at this case). They have been using the word "Hellenismos" wrong and never cared to ask Greeks/Hellenes how we have been using it and still use it.
