In addition, Canada's largest cities -- Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal -- have been recognized as world class cities in which to live and work, for their cleanliness and safety and for their cultural activities and attractive lifestyles. Canada is considered to be a relatively peaceful, safe and orderly country. Its violent crime rate decreased. Unlike its US neighbours to the south, firearms are strictly controlled and generally are not permitted. International students who come to Canada should follow the same common sense safety precautions as they would anywhere in the world. Minimum aggregate marks of 70% isn 12th grade for bachelor’s degrees, and above 50% for diplomas and advanced diplomas. Mathematics in class XII (a prerequisite for some sciences, technology, and business courses). Minimum required IELTS/PTE Academic scores with an overall score of 6.0 bands or equivalent PTE scores Masters in Canada Most universities require a qualification equivalent to the Canadian bachelor’s degree, which requires 16 years of formal education. It would mean another year of education after Indian bachelors or a four-year bachelor’s degree course like B.E., B.Tech. Or other such courses. Minimum required IELTS / PTE Academic scores with the minimum score of 6.5 bands as an overall score for PG Diploma and 7.0 bands for master’s degree. Some universities accept equivalent PTE scores too. Relevant work experience (some universities require this for MBA and Master’s Degree in IT) Doctorate in Canada For doctorate programmes, most universities require a master’s degree in that subject. However, universities might consider your application without a master’s degree in exceptional cases.

What is the procedure to study in Canada? The first step is to get admission to a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI) recognized by the government of Canada. Once an individual receives a letter of acceptance from a DLI, he or she may be able to apply for a study permit. Applications may be made online or by mail. All new study permits are issued at a Canadian port of entry. An applicant who has submitted an application to a foreign Canadian Visa Office will be issued a letter of approval advising him or her to travel to a Canadian port of entry to have the study permit issued. A study permit is generally issued for the duration of the person’s studies. What is the application process for Canada? Admissions are granted purely on students academics. Students need to provide CV, academic documents, any professional certifications, work experience if applicable, etc. However the eligibility criteria of selecting students vary in different provinces of Canada. The documents required for visa application are given below: Completed Student Application form. Completed Supplementary Questionnaire for students and postdoctoral researchers. Canada puts forward three types of housing options for the international students: Homestay Dormitory Private Accommodations The homestay helps the students to have a Canadian living and learning experience. Students who prefer to find their own accommodation can get their private accommodations with the help of newspapers or by checking with the campus. What are the living expenses in Canada? Cost of living in Canada is very low compared to other countries like UK, Europe, etc. However the expense varies according to each province. The rural areas are very cheap whereas the major cities like Toronto and Vancouver can be expensive. Can I work while I am studying? Canada provides work permit to students which allow them to work off campus. The work permit, however, restricts the working hours to 20 hours a week during academic sessions. During extended vacations no restrictions are given. Are Scholarships available? Canada provides a lot of merit based and institution based scholarship programs. Students who excel in their studies are awarded with these scholarships irrespective of their physical or financial conditions. It's Christmas!

The excitement is in the air around the campus. Christmas concerts, Santa hats, Christmas cookies and holiday cheer has begun. The snowflakes in the PC Commons remind us of the celebrations that occur around the world at this special holiday time. For many reasons, it's a joy-filled time of the year. We have our plans in place for what to do over the Christmas and New Year's break. I look forward to hearing stories from your various travels.

If your home looks like ours, there is a Christmas tree (or two) in it right now. We love our Christmas trees and we spend the extra money to leave the lights on all night long. The lights are beautiful. In the early mornings when I walk our dog in the dark, I can see the lights from one of our Christmas trees through the windows. Those sparkling lights brighten up an otherwise dark apartment building.

So it is with LIGHT! Light shines in the darkness and brings us a glow of warmth during this special time of the year. Let's celebrate!

Reminders

» Carrying Copies of Passport and Visa

We have been informed by Public Security Bureau that policemen are being sent to different locations like supermarkets or streets to check people's passport and visa. We would like to remind our community that carrying a copy of your passport and visa in your wallet is recommended so you are fine if you are checked. Please note that the policemen will show you their working ID when they stop you. If they don't, please ask. If you forget to carry the two copies, they could take you back to their office. In this case, we suggest you contact your employer who can confirm your passport and visa information. They may also stop unaccompanied students so I would recommend that you review this procedure with them as well.

» New Residence Permits, Work Permits or Passports?

Whenever you or your family members receive new residence permits, work permits and/or passports, please be sure to send copies of your new documents to the Admissions office, in the Welcome Center (1st floor High School). Or, email soft copies to Admissions. Keeping your children's files up to date helps us keep in compliance with Chinese governmental regulations.

» No Bicycles for Children Under Age 12 on Public Streets - Shanghai International Schools Association (SISA)

The following information regarding bicycle riding in Shanghai is shared in an attempt to be helpful to all its member schools. For safety purposes, the regulations in Shanghai allow for bicycles to be ridden on public streets only by children age 12 and above. This regulation is strictly enforced in Puxi, but is unevenly applied in Pudong. The immediate danger is that families may assume that local protections for bicycle riders may be the same as in their own country, but they are not. It is important to be aware that if a child under 12 is involved in any kind of accident on a public street or crossing, the parent may be held responsible. Sidewalks and bicycle paths along public roads are considered part of the public roads. In addition, as accident insurance is relatively new to China and there are not many precedents with these situations, your own accident or medical insurance company has the right to refuse cover in the event of violation of the local law. We hope that better understanding will result in better safety for younger children.
