Once I asked my (might be and I hope will be) grad study’s PI why he chose to specialise in his particular field. His answer was because few people worked on that topic and he can be a leading figure in that particular area. Lo and behold, he does produce some high impact publications on that topic, and got some pretty good funding schemes for his lab. So, being unique can lead you to be the best in a certain niche (like no one ever was!). And this principle seems to work not only on science field, as this youtube account eloquently write on their opinion about who-would’ve-known-this-anime-would-garner-such-success-and-become-the-best-anime-of-the-year Yuri!!! on Ice: 

So yeah, if I ever set my own lab, I will focus on optimization of cassowary’s gut microbiome for paper pulp production and if I write anime script, it will be about romantic relationship between an anoa’s hunter and a parasailing instructor because why not.

P.S: My (hope will be) PI’s research topic is much cooler and more useful than ‘optimization of cassowary’s gut microbiome for paper pulp production’ so fingers’ crossed that I’ll get a chance to study in his lab
