First post on the blog is a complaint, just to set the tone... I just had to buy a pair of wheels for my trusty gravel bike. The old pair was old and battered by too much "doing stupid thing and ride stuff that maybe you should rather walk with this bike" and the rear rim started cracking.

We made the calculation with the bike store guy and to buy a new set of rims and spokes plus the labor cost, it's cheaper and easier for me and him to just order a new pair (add that to the fact that the hubs are also getting old after like, 6000 KMS on them).

But i am a bit cross, if I had a wheelbuilding stand I could have saved about 100-120 euros in labor. I do 90% of the mechanical work on the bike myself ordinarily, but this was for lack of tools and experience out of my reach.

The good side is that now I have a set of wheels to practice wheelbuilding on, if I manage to get a wheel stand for cheap.

The takeaway point of the story is: learn to fix your bike! It's actually way easier than it looks like and do 80% of the ordinary maintenance you don't need anything special. And the money you save by doing that will make it easier to get the remaining jobs done by professionals when you find something out of your skill set
