I get the feeling that Sweet was the one Toby was gonna use right off the bat and the other two were added in later; there's a LOT of unused stuff of just Sweet in the game's data (like walking sprites and a solo boss fight against him), and he pops up in the concept art more than Cap'n or K_K

Huh, I hadn't heard of the solo boss fight. Where did you hear or read about it? Honestly, I might be missing something re: the concept art, too, unless you’re talking about Nelnal’s work.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if that was the case, though, since Sweet's the one who's most invested in the rebellion, and that's kind of their whole reason for being out in Cyber Fields. And like you said, the extra unused sprites are a little odd; you don’t just whip up a set and then decide to cut them out on a whim.

Hate to say it, but the only one I think was definitely a 'yeah, sure let's throw 'em all in' deal is Cap'n. The poor guy's sprites don't have his name attached and he doesn't even have a unique one for being damaged.
