Making the same post for the 10th time. The way Askeladd’s opinion of Thorfinn works, he doesn’t want to mentor Thorfinn or to keep living alongside him purely for the sake of having a minion. The reason he’s so fond of Thorfinn is that he doesn’t stay with him, he crawls back to him. What interests Askeladd is Thorfinn’s ability to take what he throws at him and challenge him, to see through him and not be disappointed because he already hates him, to return to Askeladd not in spite of the harsh conditions he imposes but because of them. A Thorfinn that would be taken in by his charisma and become a loyal servant is a Thofinn who wouldn’t last a week. Askeladd’s son-figure is the one who suffers for staying with Askeladd and drags himself through hell, fire, water back into that suffering because that’s a) the only way Askeladd can trust affection, b) a major ego boost
