Sad things that are technically very minor in the scheme of things but nontheless ruin your day all the same.
I spent the last eight hours typing away at a big long post about my blorbo whom I very rarely have the energy or guts to gush about.
I love my blorbo and very much wanted to maybe, just maybe, write something that might cause people who have not thought as obsessively as I have about this character to maybe appreciate their struggles, realize where they might have been unfair to this character and others like them in the past and maybe, in a teeny tiny way help people writing fanfic about my blorbo to actually write them as a character rather than a (cute) set piece that happens to be in their blorbos' lives.
I was under no illusion that my blorbo would become theirs. In all honesty I didn't expect more than like two people to ever actually read it and good odds those two people would still disregard it completely because there are very legit reasons for people to find my blorbo obnoxious or annoying.
BUT STILL.
That doesn't mean I expected some program (that's apparently reset its automated schedule to mid afternoon instead of the 4am I had it) to close all my internet pages as I was still writing them!
Tumblr media
So yeah. I'm just gonna go mope and look at silly memes for a while until I can stop feeling grief over losing my character gushing and I hope anyone potentially reading this is having a much better day.
#sadness over a comparatively minor thing but I needed to vent#the blorbo in question was Morgana from Persona 5 btw#He's a jerk who the game/my people pleasing main character makes into my jailer but I adore him#I wish people would think more about what kinds of struggles he must have navigating a human centric world#while trapped in a form that he doesn't identify as his own and leads everyone into treating him as non human#which yeah he's physically nonhuman and it can't be helped that people not in the know can't hear him talk or realize he's a person#but like#He's a person and its kind of screwed up that the fandom only ever remembers him to rag on or diss his 'insecurity' arc#which is more accurately his 'realizing he has an entire support network to lose and not knowing how to handle' arc#combined with his longer ongoing 'all I have is my identity as me and if I'm not human what is that even worth?' arc#which is different to Teddie's (my fav P4 character) in a few key areas#such as Teddie putting most of the issue on his nature of being nonhuman#whereas Morgana is more terrified of having who he is ignored in favor of the casual callousness of others#and being helpless to actually effect anything in the real world due to being to everyone but MAYBE the PT a cat#(all that said I agree with the general consensus the pre Okumura arc was handled poorly and Ryuji deserved an apology too)#but still#he's a people#If he can get a human form without it being the result of something bad he's totally valid in that#and he still deserves to be treated as a person even if he can't#all of which is more a fandom problem than a PT problem#but just saying#Futaba sweet amazing gift to the world that you are#if I was Morgana and you smooshed my face without warning like you do his#you would probably end up bleeding#(and as a result I would probably end up being thrown out and left to starve or get put down in a pound or something because cat body)#but anyway#first time using a gif#is it alright to just search here and use the ones that pop up or is a bit research first advised?#strangely enough ranting in the tags has made me feel a lot better even if I am still a bit sad#oh neat you can move tags up and down in the order when editing that's neat

A few readers out there know me from Facebook. Some know me only for this account. Some of you know me IRL. A few of you have known me since I was five (this is absolutely true). But, today, if you’ll indulge me, I’d like to engage in an experiment. I posted this link on my FB page (with a brief description), however, I failed to describe the circumstances in which I conducted my research. This will be a tale of brain damage, neuroanatomy, orthopedic surgery, canes, and pimps. Yes, you read that last word correctly. If all that seems insane and surreal; well, get used to that.
So, you’ve undoubtedly seen that faux statistic that claims that you only use 10% of your brain. It’s misleading not only because there’s never been a significant study to back it up, but it also ignores how the brain works. As has been noted elsewhere; you only use a small percentage of your keyboard at a time. Why not just save money and order used keyboards that are missing a “z” or “~” key? Similarly, your brain has many, many specialized parts that are carefully coordinated to work together in harmony. You can also think of the brain as a carefully-run network of computers, where information (in this example, a selfie you’re going to have touched up for Match.com)  goes from computer A (in this case, your camera-phone) to computer B to computer C (where a technician fills in all those unattractive, bald, radioactive spots), to a printer. You could, theoretically, torch computer B in this hypothetical, and, as long as Computer C gets wifi. Unless the photographer is experiencing an outage, or he lost it in a craps game. In which case, he’d have to go to a public library or Kinko’s or someplace suitable to receive and modify things. But those are a hassle, and it’s not convenient to plan your life as if you’re going to have to run to a business center at a moment’s notice because you made a bad gamble. Human brains are very similar - there are a few places where science has a good idea what’s happening, some places where no one knows; anything, and everything in between. The point is, just like the photographer in that scenario, it’s possible for the brain - when injured - to develop new ways of sending information from one area to another, although that process is not well-known (and, if a few scientists I know are correct, I do that much, much better than the average human)(which, as it turns out, might just be because I’ll keep growing brain until it kills me). Which is really not here nor there, just that, as frightening as brain damage seems (and it scares the shit out of me), it isn’t necessarily as permanent as we thought twenty years ago.
Now, Tumors #2 and #3 were (are?)(were/are/will be?) were in my right somatosensory cortex (that old thing about the right side of the brain controlling the left side of the body? That’s mostly-accurate; so all my motor deficits are on my left side). The good news is, science has a pretty good idea what does, and it heals well with few flaws and without much help (of course, that was just what the surgeons told me; I didn’t ask about combining surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy; so we’ll all find out, together). Which means that the biggest, most-lastingest side-effect of the latest round of high-powered treatment (by which I mean the surgery, radiotherapy, and 42-straight days of Temodar)(and the Cap serum, can’t forget that). In the week after the latest surgery, my entire left side was completely numb. Like, I couldn’t feel a thing (which, when I saw the horrifying swiss-cheese post-surgical MRIs, made me almost grateful I could figure out which side was screwed-up). In total honesty, I was never paralyzed on the left side (although I was definitely weakened), however, you’d be amazed at how useless your limbs are if you can’t feel them. Imagine if you had to actually see your hand to know if you had it clenched or not and you can imagine the trouble I had (okay, so that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s not far off)(also, my sense of sight, hearing, smell, etc were always intact, but that’s another matter)..
I’m doing much, much, much better these days; HOWEVER, as everyone has noted, the side-effects of treatment are identical to cancer progression (this is true), and, as Mad Scientist noted, likely to cause more somatosensory problems (I have a temporary handicapped parking placard thanks to that prediction) and, in total honesty, there have been a few days  where I was not moving at 100%. These are usually post-infusion days (there’s a shocker). So, after the latest round of black magic (that was last Tuesday, I believe), I wasn’t feeling completely well (I’ve also since figured out that my allergies tend to exacerbate my post-infusion side-effects), so, when offered the chance to go for  a walk, I accepted, and grabbed one of Dad’s canes.
A few notes on Dad I have previously left out. Back in... oh, let’s say the past, he had a nasty bicycle mishap that required lots of assorted orthopedic surgery, and required him to become an expert at using canes. So, I figured he’d have one left over from his own medical misadventures. I was right; and he dug out a German-engineered walking stick (that’s the only way to describe it). Although I got an introduction to cane-use 101 (the physical rehab cheerleaders in Northern California were decidedly sub-par), I decided it didn’t seem like a good immediate investment (Dad later confirmed this, pointing out that the form of injury determines the best cane to use). He also admitted that even though he liked the walking stick, it was his attempt to ditch the horrifying, medical-standard hospital canes you get sent home with, in favor of something cooler and more versatile. Now, also to keep in mind; Dad’s hip joint is starting to wear out, and he’ll be due in for more surgery at some point in the future. Which also could be a limp-rich time for me. And it occurred to me that I didn’t wait for Radiation Oncologist’s (horribly accurate)(still horribly accurate as it turns out) prediction that I’d lose vast swathes of hair, before i started doing hair-replacement research.
I believe my remark to Dad was, “There have to be cooler, functional canes. Pimps have them.” Yes, I’ll admit that may be the whitest thing ever written.
However, just 20 minutes of research made me realize just how screwed cancer patients are by dint of being a medical novelty - it’s a disease of old, (or an unbelievably rare disease, in my case) and, until recently, people weren’t living long enough to get cancer, or dying before they got diagnosed (that’s most brain cancer patients)(or patients with obvious tumors/cancer - it was discovered by the ancient Greeks, let’s not forget). Whereas we’ve had obvious, visible leg problems forever, and the underlying cause isn’t usually nearly-instantly lethal, so medical science has had a long, long time to deal with it. Now, in all fairness, I’m not saying paraplegia or bone or muscle problems or anything that causes limps and mobility problems are cured, or we need to divert research elsewhere, but a simple twenty minute search revealed that we are - in terms of those issues - light years ahead of even the coolest, most-freakiest stuff we have for brain tumors and cancer (my apologies to Radiation Oncologist if she’s reading this, but I think she’d agree that most treatments for bone injuries or hip dysplasia or any related medical conditions I’m forgetting are more numerous, cheaper, and more effective than anything available to me, even though there’s a possibility I’m being held together by the Warlocks stealing the life essence of other beings and transferring it to me)(okay, that sounds way cooler than any cane, but I’m digressing). The point is, only twenty minutes’ of research revealed a wonderland of walking-aid options. And we’re only talking canes. There are - this amazed me - flask canes. I mean, I get that flasks are good and needed; double for canes, but combining the two never would have occurred to me. Surely, the point of a flask is that it can be discreetly sipped in those moments of crisis or boredom in the courtroom or family counseling session. Having a mobility issue and coupling that with the cumbersome size of a cane doesn’t seem the most efficient means of delivery. There are, of course, the classic sword canes (although I don’t know how effective they’ll be at supporting your weight). Based on Ian Fleming’s writings and experiences, I’d imagine you could get some sort of gun-cane combination, although, that also seems both tasteless and inefficient.
However, after much, much perusing, I found Candidate #1, should my mobility issues return on a more permanent case.

Lord of the Rings, 2020 and Stuffed Oreos: Read the Andrew Bosworth Memo
Lord of the Rings, 2020 and Stuffed Oreos: Read the Andrew Bosworth Memo https://ift.tt/2FpDoEm
Tumblr media
On Dec. 30, Andrew Bosworth, a longtime Facebook executive and confidant of Mark Zuckerberg, wrote a long memo on the company’s internal network.
In the post, titled “Thoughts for 2020,” Mr. Bosworth — who oversaw Facebook’s advertising efforts during the 2016 election and is now in charge of the company’s virtual and augmented reality division — admitted that President Trump’s savvy use of Facebook’s advertising tools “very well may lead to” his re-election. But he maintained that the company should not change its policies on political advertising, saying that doing so in order to avert a victory by Mr. Trump would be a misuse of power, comparing it to a scene from “The Lord of the Rings.”
Mr. Bosworth, who is seen by some inside Facebook as a proxy of sorts for Mr. Zuckerberg, also weighed in on a variety of issues that have vexed Facebook for the past few years, including data privacy scandals, Russian interference, political polarization and the debate over whether Facebook is healthy for society.
Here is the full post as written:
Thoughts for 2020
The election of Donald Trump immediately put a spotlight on Facebook. While the intensity and focus of that spotlight may be unfair I believe it isn’t unjust. Scrutiny is warranted given our position in society as the most prominent of a new medium. I think most of the criticisms that have come to light have been valid and represent real areas for us to serve our community better. I don’t enjoy having our flaws exposed, but I consider it far better than the alternative where we remain ignorant of our shortcomings.
One trap I sometimes see people falling into is to dismiss all feedback when they can invalidate one part of it. I see that with personal feedback and I see it happening with media coverage. The press often gets so many details wrong it can be hard to trust the veracity of their conclusions. Dismissing the whole because of flaws in parts is a mistake. The media has limited information to work with (by our own design!) and they sometimes get it entirely wrong but there is almost always some critical issue that motivated them to write which we need to understand.
It is worth looking at the 2016 Election which set this chain of events in motion. I was running our ads organization at the time of the election and had been for the four years prior (and for one year after). It is worth reminding everyone that Russian Interference was real but it was mostly not done through advertising. $100,000 in ads on Facebook can be a powerful tool but it can’t buy you an American election, especially when the candidates themselves are putting up several orders of magnitude more money on the same platform (not to mention other platforms).
Instead, the Russians worked to exploit existing divisions in the American public for example by hosting Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter protest events in the same city on the same day. The people who shows up to those events were real even if the event coordinator was not. Likewise the groups of Americans being fed partisan content was real even if those feeding them were not. The organic reach they managed sounds very big in absolute terms and unfortunately humans are bad at contextualizing big numbers. Whatever reach they managed represents an infinitesimal fraction of the overall content people saw in the same period of time and certainly over the course of an election across all media.
So most of the information floating around that is widely believed isn’t accurate. But who cares? It is certainly true that we should have been more mindful of the role both paid and organic content played in democracy and been more protective of it. On foreign interference, Facebook has made material progress and while we may never be able to fully eliminate it I don’t expect it to be a major issue for 2020.
Misinformation was also real and related but not the same as Russian interference. The Russians may have used misinformation alongside real partisan messaging in their campaigns, but the primary source of misinformation was economically motivated. People with no political interest whatsoever realized they could drive traffic to ad-laden websites by creating fake headlines and did so to make money. These might be more adequately described as hoaxes that play on confirmation bias or conspiracy theory. In my opinion this is another area where the criticism is merited. This is also an area where we have made dramatic progress and don’t expect it to be a major issue for 2020.
It is worth noting, as it is relevant at the current moment, that misinformation from the candidates themselves was not considered a major shortcoming of political advertising on FB in 2016 even though our policy then was the same as it is now. These policies are often covered by the press in the context of a profit motive. That’s one area I can confidently assure you the critics are wrong. Having run our ads business for some time it just isn’t a factor when we discuss the right thing to do. However, given that those conversations are private I think we can all agree the press can be forgiven for jumping to that conclusion. Perhaps we could do a better job exposing the real cost of these mistakes to make it clear that revenue maximization would have called for a different strategy entirely.
Cambridge Analytica is one of the more acute cases I can think of where the details are almost all wrong but I think the scrutiny is broadly right. Facebook very publicly launched our developer platform in 2012 in an environment primarily scrutinizing us for keeping data to ourselves. Everyone who added an application got a prompt explaining what information it would have access to and at the time it included information from friends. This may sound crazy in a 2020 context but it received widespread praise at the time. However the only mechanism we had for keeping data secure once it was shared was legal threats which ultimately didn’t amount to much for companies which had very little to lose. The platform didn’t build the value we had hoped for our consumers and we shut this form of it down in 2014.
The company Cambridge Analytica started by running surveys on Facebook to get information about people. It later pivoted to be an advertising company, part of our Facebook Marketing Partner program, who other companies could hire to run their ads. Their claim to fame was psychographic targeting. This was pure snake oil and we knew it; their ads performed no better than any other marketing partner (and in many cases performed worse). I personally regret letting them stay on the FMP program for that reason alone. However at the time we thought they were just another company trying to find an angle to promote themselves and assumed poor performance would eventually lose them their clients. We had no idea they were shopping an old Facebook dataset that they were supposed to have deleted (and certified to us in writing that they had).
When Trump won, Cambridge Analytica tried to take credit so they were back on our radar but just for making [expletive] claims about their own importance. I was glad when the Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale called them out for it. Later on, we found out from journalists that they had never deleted the database and had instead made elaborate promises about its power for advertising. Our comms team decided it would be best to get ahead of the journalists and pull them from the platform. This was a huge mistake. It was not only bad form (justifiably angering the journalists) but we were also fighting the wrong battle. We wanted to be clear this had not been a data breach (which, to be fair to us, it absolutely was not) but the real concern was the existence of the dataset no matter how it happened. We also sent the journalists legal letters advising them not to use the term “breech” which was received normally by the NYT (who agreed) and aggressively by The Guardian (who forged ahead with the wrong terminology, furious about the letter) in spite of it being a relatively common practice I am told.
In practical terms, Cambridge Analytica is a total non-event. They were snake oil salespeople. The tools they used didn’t work, and the scale they used them at wasn’t meaningful. Every claim they have made about themselves is garbage. Data of the kind they had isn’t that valuable to being with and worse it degrades quickly, so much so as to be effectively useless in 12-18 months. In fact the United Kingdom Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) seized all the equipment at Cambridge Analytica and found that there was zero data from any UK citizens! So surely, this is one where we can ignore the press, right? Nope. The platform was such a poor move that the risks associated were bound to come to light. That we shut it down in 2014 and never paid the piper on how bad it was makes this scrutiny justified in my opinion, even if it is narrowly misguided.
So was Facebook responsible for Donald Trump getting elected? I think the answer is yes, but not for the reasons anyone thinks. He didn’t get elected because of Russia or misinformation or Cambridge Analytica. He got elected because he ran the single best digital ad campaign I’ve ever seen from any advertiser. Period.
To be clear, I’m no fan of Trump. I donated the max to Hillary. After his election I wrote a post about Trump supporters that I’m told caused colleagues who had supported him to feel unsafe around me (I regret that post and deleted shortly after).
But Parscale and Trump just did unbelievable work. They weren’t running misinformation or hoaxes. They weren’t microtargeting or saying different things to different people. They just used the tools we had to show the right creative to each person. The use of custom audiences, video, ecommerce, and fresh creative remains the high water mark of digital ad campaigns in my opinion.
That brings me to the present moment, where we have maintained the same ad policies. It occurs to me that it very well may lead to the same result. As a committed liberal I find myself desperately wanting to pull any lever at my disposal to avoid the same result. So what stays my hand?
I find myself thinking of the Lord of the Rings at this moment. Specifically when Frodo offers the ring to Galadrial and she imagines using the power righteously, at first, but knows it will eventually corrupt her. As tempting as it is to use the tools available to us to change the outcome, I am confident we must never do that or we will become that which we fear.
The philosopher John Rawls reasoned that the only moral way to decide something is to remove yourself entirely from the specifics of any one person involved, behind a so called “Veil of Ignorance.” That is the tool that leads me to believe in liberal government programs like universal healthcare, expanding housing programs, and promoting civil rights. It is also the tool that prevents me from limiting the reach of publications who have earned their audience, as distasteful as their content may be to me and even to the moral philosophy I hold so dear.
That doesn’t mean there is no line. Things like incitement of violence, voter suppression, and more are things that same moral philosophy would safely allow me to rule out. But I think my fellow liberals are a bit too, well, liberal when it comes to calling people Nazi’s.
If we don’t want hate mongering politicians then we must not elect them. If they are getting elected then we have to win hearts and minds. If we change the outcomes without winning the minds of the people who will be ruled then we have a democracy in name only. If we limit what information people have access to and what they can say then we have no democracy at all.
This conversation often raises the alarm around filter bubbles, but that is a myth that is easy to dispel. Ask yourself how many newspapers and news programs people read/watched before the internet. If you guessed “one and one” on average you are right, and if you guessed those were ideologically aligned with them you are right again. The internet exposes them to far more content from other sources (26% more on Facebook, according to our research). This is one that everyone just gets wrong.
The focus on filter bubbles causes people to miss the real disaster which is polarization. What happens when you see 26% more content from people you don’t agree with? Does it help you empathize with them as everyone has been suggesting? Nope. It makes you dislike them even more. This is also easy to prove with a thought experiment: whatever your political leaning, think of a publication from the other side that you despise. When you read an article from that outlet, perhaps shared by an uncle or nephew, does it make you rethink your values? Or does it make you retreat further into the conviction of your own correctness? If you answered the former, congratulations you are a better person than I am. Every time I read something from Breitbart I get 10% more liberal.
What does all of this say about the nature of the algorithmic rewards? Everyone points to top 0.1% content as being acutely polarized but how steep are the curves? What does the top 1% or 5% look like? And what is the real reach across those curves when compared to other content? I think the call for algorithmic transparency can sometimes be overblown but being more transparent about this type of data would likely be healthy.
What I expect people will find is that the algorithms are primarily exposing the desires of humanity itself, for better or worse. This is a Sugar, Salt, Fat problem. The book of that name tells a story ostensibly about food but in reality about the limited effectiveness of corporate paternalism. A while ago Kraft foods had a leader who tried to reduce the sugar they sold in the interest of consumer health. But customers wanted sugar. So instead he just ended up reducing Kraft market share. Health outcomes didn’t improve. That CEO lost his job. The new CEO introduced quadruple stuffed Oreos and the company returned to grace. Giving people tools to make their own decisions is good but trying to force decisions upon them rarely works (for them or for you).
In these moments people like to suggest that our consumers don’t really have free will. People compare social media to nicotine. I find that wildly offensive, not to me but to addicts. I have seen family members struggle with alcoholism and classmates struggle with opioids. I know there is a battle for the terminology of addiction but I side firmly with the neuroscientists. Still, while Facebook may not be nicotine I think it is probably like sugar. Sugar is delicious and for most of us there is a special place for it in our lives. But like all things it benefits from moderation.
At the end of the day we are forced to ask what responsibility individuals have for themselves. Set aside substances that directly alter our neurochemistry unnaturally. Make costs and trade-offs as transparent as possible. But beyond that each of us must take responsibility for ourselves. If I want to eat sugar and die an early death that is a valid position. My grandfather took such a stance towards bacon and I admired him for it. And social media is likely much less fatal than bacon.
To bring this uncharacteristically long and winding essay full circle, I wanted to start a discussion about what lessons people are taking away from the press coverage. My takeaway is that we were late on data security, misinformation, and foreign interference. We need to get ahead of polarization and algorithmic transparency. What are the other big topics people are seeing and where are we on those?

Mafia/Hitman AU Pt. 3
In which Victor Nikiforov is a Man for Hire. Urban legends say that, for the right price (and sometimes just for kicks), he can single handedly pull off any job in the world. Beautiful, invincible and filthy rich.
Enter Katsuki Yuuri and it all goes to shit.
Part 1 (x)
Part 2 (x)
AO3 here (x)
A hometown hero. Minako says to Yuuri as he packs a suitcase for the upcoming business trip. Hasetu needed to establish some lifelines and it was up to Yuuri Katsuki to make it happen.
Hasetsu was a tourist town, small and cozy with valuable land but the past couple of years have a been battle for small time businesses to stay away from bankruptcy. Yu-topia, one of the final hot springs in Hasetsu left was sinking and his parents have been under scrutiny to keep the books in the black. Even in the face of increasingly aggressive contractors offering to take it off their hands, the land Yu-topia stood on was their version of the family heirloom, it was not up for sale.
We're counting on you, Yuuri! He knows they're supposed to be words of encouragement and yet all he feels are the burden of roles he needed to fill. Carrying on the hopes of his entire family and the residents of Hasetsu by proxy did not make Yuuri feel like the valiant hometown hero everyone else expected him to be.
Yuuri spent the last 5 years abroad in America, studying as an undergrad at Berkeley for a degree in Marketing and Entrepreneurship with the intent of returning to revive the family business. He graduated with honours, so Yuuri knows how to crunch out numbers and graphs on projected growth, on efficiency, on trend line predictions with the best of them, that was never the real hurdle. Networking presented a challenge, surrounded by charisma and innate charm, Yuuris' anxiety weighed down on him. Still, Yuuri could manage to get by with his hard knowledge and a few close friends.
Problems arose when it came to presentations, where his charts and figures failed, regardless of how accurate they may be. Yuuri realizes that a large part of being successful with clients was about selling yourself rather than the product. Selling yourself as someone competent, self assured and thrives under the pressure of great responsibility. Someone clients can trust with their assets, someone who won't buckle. Unfortunately, professors never covered much of that in lecture.
This upcoming banquet would serve as a major opportunity to make connections with powerful investors that Hasetsu would otherwise never even hear of. No more quietly standing in the shadows, Yuuri needed to be on top of his game and stand out.
Yuuri loses track after drink number 6. The world got soft around the edges and he feels as if the entire room is filled with old friends he just happened to forget. Except, Yuuri can feel someone watching him in his periphery, could it be an actual old friend? Yuuri turns to look and... Definitely not someone you could forget easily, if at all. If Yuuri wasn't drunk he'd swear that man was glowing.
No to old friend, Yes to whatever that man wants to be.
Who is he? Yuuri doesn't know if he said that out loud but someone answers anyways.
"Victor! I didn't expect to see you here." A cheery woman in an evening gown approaches the glowing man and embraces him in a hug. When Victor turns to greet her, Yuuri zeros in trying catch Victor's eyes, do you see me?  He succeeds for a split second and is sure the moment deserves a slow motion replay, not enough time has never been such a big problem.
That's it. Yuuri has just had four more glasses of something that turns everything around him into a fairytale and the prince just spotted his beau of the ball. He's certain the fantasy ends when the clock strikes midnight and every glass he knocks back just delays that hour a little longer. Yuuri never knew beer goggles, he just has champagne tinted glasses and it comes with a certain brand of confidence.
The DJ puts on a new track and a seductive rhythm kicks his fairytale off to a intoxicating start. Yuuri is pulling at his tie and swaying across the lounge to introduce himself to Victor. The beautiful glowing man raises his eyebrows in surprise when he catches sight of Yuuri just short of charging at him. Its debatable if Yuuris hips are rolling with the music or he is just...enthusiastic. Yuuri stops a few steps short, extends a hand out to Victor with half hooded eyes and his shirt more than half unbuttoned.
Dance with me. Not a question.
It's a bit obscene.
When Victor tentatively slips his fingers into Yuuris' open palm, Yuuri sees the devils mischief in a smile. His hand closes around Victors and Yuuri pulls him forward hard enough Victor almost stumbles. Yuuris body is there to catch him, they're pressed flush from knee to chest when Victor swings his right leg back for support and caresses his left thigh up against Yuuris' leg. The mischief in Victor smile transforms into...
"It is a tango, after all." He says to Yuuri, voice reverberating through them both. Yuuri didn't expect the accent but certainly appreciates it.
Yuuris' free hand is pressed against the small of his back (pull him closer, no, closer) and with the other sliding slowly down Victors' arm, he cross steps the both of them onto the dance floor. Victors traces a figure 8 and snaps into a back boleo with his leg bent upwards into a v while the other stays extended behind him, toes sliding against the marble floor as Yuuri pulls him forward. He doesn't break eye contact so why should Yuuri, they're both deadlocked in a gaze, barely catching their breath in a sweetheart embrace. Yuuri pivots Victor in a carousel and with forehead to forehead, dips Victors backwards with an arm wrapped around his waist. The song, as if on cue, plays a woman's breathless moan.
Obscene.
All those years of lessons in Minako's studio might as well have been built for this moment. Yuuri makes a mental note of getting Minako a nice present for her next birthday.
At one point, Yuuri mistakes Victors' step back for a move to walk away so he pulls the loosened tie over his head and tosses the loop over Victor, giving a very firm tug once around the Russian man's neck. The gasp he hears is not from the song.
Everyone, dance floor and beyond, is staring. Staring and scandalized and possibly taking photos. Had there been children present, their eyes would be covered by a parents' hand.
Where do you think you're going?
They are close enough for Yuuri to steal a breath from Victor. An arm wraps gently around Victors back and Victors arm is draped across his shoulders. In the figures of Argentine Tango, this particular expression of emotion has a name; you are mine.
Victor whispers in Yuuris' ear about his impressive stamina and Yuuri is determined to prove him right. Either the DJ had an extensive block of fiery tango music planned or Cupid himself, was enjoying the show.  By the time the dance floor clears, the pair has danced to fourteen songs back to back. They end in a dramatic final figure, with Victors' leg hooked on top of Yuuris' thigh and their bodies pressed together from the chest down. If Victor was feeling tired before, he's certainly feeling something else now.
When the night comes to a close, Yuuri is responsible for 15 empty flutes though he only drank 14.5. Victor is wearing the last half in his jacket and only then decides it might be a good time for the alcohol to stop flowing. Yuuri is clinging to Victor, his hips rolling on their own accord, slurring out his subconscious. "Victooooor" Yuuris' arms squeeze around his new dance partner. "Come viii-situh me in Haasetsuuu, my family owns a HOT springs, it's reeeeally w-" GASP. "Let's be bussinessssss partners Victooor..... I'll give you mmhmyy carrrr-duh, you'll be my partner riiight??"
By the next morning, Yuuri doesn't remember much from his alcohol induced fairytale. There are some fuzzy snippets in his memory about dancing with a beautiful, possibly glowing man and asking him to become part of his professional network... or something. All Yuuri knows for sure is that he ended up in the right bed in the morning with his phone and wallet intact, dignity not withstanding. Well, it was his bed, whether or not the right one is up for discussion.
On the night stand there is a glass of water and a business card. It just says Victor with a phone number listed below. If Yuuri was more observant, he would also see the faint outline of a kiss preserved in Chanel lip balm on the back. But he isn't, and the kiss goes undelivered.
After an abnormal amount of social media stalking and a relentless stream of what do I say? Because oh my god this guy is going to think I'm a drunken idiot that hits on strangers and propositions them to be an investor in his family business while partially undressed and Victor probably dumped him off in the hotel room after drunk Yuuri passed out post banquet. Which means he probably took a taxi with drunk Yuuri, had to dig through drunk Yuuris pockets for a room key, took off shoes, socks and glasses for drunk Yuuri, most likely got propositioned to be another kind of partner by drunk Yuuri and declined from the lack of a Victor shaped imprint in the space next to him. Oh god.
Sober Yuuri mentally berates the drunk one for messing up a legitimate chance to network with apparently a powerful and wealthy business mogul.
There is no way on the face of this planet Yuuri is calling Victor. He is flying back to Hasetsu and never drinking again.
Four days and a snow storm later, Victor shows up at Yu-topia. Yuuri finds him soaking in the hot springs. Naked. So very naked.
Victor moves in with Yuuri that very same night. There aren't many hotels in Hasetsu and their banquet hall has been doing little outside of collecting dust so Victor asks to rent it out. Yuuri's mom, Hiroko, would have accepted a smile as payment if Victor offered. Hiroko tells Yuuris' sister how glad she is now that Yuuris' FINALLY brought someone home. So handsome too!
Yuuri insists it's not like that. Mari gives him a pointed look. Victor is lying on the floor, sleeping, but not really.
That night, Yuuri realizes his heart is pounding because he is so happy.

Computer Vision Internship in Corvallis with BigML
We are pleased to introduce Dimitrios Trigkakis, a Computer Vision Intern who worked with the BigML Team for the summer of 2018. On the other side the world from Efe Toros, BigML’s other summer intern, Dimitrios gained industry experience while applying his years of research knowledge, which he shares first-hand here.
I had the opportunity of being introduced to BigML as I searched for summer internships, and I quickly realized this company would be a great fit. I joined the team as a Computer Vision Intern in Corvallis, Oregon, and this role proved to be a nice change of pace between my Master’s degree work last year, and my ongoing research for my Ph.D. at Oregon State University.
During the interview process, it became apparent that BigML has a team of intelligent and ambitious people, who share a lot of the interest and motivation that originally lead me to study data science and Machine Learning at the beginning of my academic career.
For the initial phases of my training, I discussed potential projects with my mentor, Dr. Charles Parker, and we developed a plan for practical and important contributions focused on Computer Vision problems, as well as strengthening the pre-existing foundations for image-based Machine Learning.
All of my projects were aimed towards developing methods for identification of the content of images. Typical Machine Learning algorithms can find patterns given the features of a dataset, but in computer vision, such features are not present and have to be constructed from lower level information (the image’s pixels). BigML can provide a platform for re-training of image-based models, with great benefits in all areas where images are involved. Some examples of tasks involving computer vision include:
Recognizing car plates
Reading subtitles in other languages
Identifying people in videos
Recognizing objects in scenes
Identifying medically relevant visual features in x-rays or other scans
There are many tasks where computer vision can provide excellent assistance in automating labor-intensive image identification tasks that are currently being assigned to large groups of people, costing a lot of time and money. My internship projects involved implementing or expanding the existing ingredients enabling large-scale image recognition for BigML. All of these projects are aimed towards image classification, with future potential for object detection, image segmentation, and other computer vision tasks. More specifically, my projects revolved around the following:
Expanding BigML’s infrastructure for employing several pre-trained convolutional neural network models, which form the basis for later fine-tuning on many computer-vision related datasets.
Developing a similar infrastructure for support of our models on web-pages, for an accurate and fast web inference that is user-friendly.
Training models on image datasets that do not revolve around fine-grained classification of object categories in photographic images (e.g. Imagenet dataset). Moving in a different direction, we trained a model for classification of images that occur in an artistic setting, where object classification is challenging.
We developed a deep learning model that is capable of identifying structure, clusters and visualizations for datasets without labels (unsupervised learning).
Overview of Projects
On the software engineering side of things, we wanted to implement pre-trained models for various architectures, each with different strengths and weaknesses. We now support five different neural network architectures, one of which (namely Mobilenet) is very lightweight and was designed in order to run on mobile phone hardware. All architectures achieve competitive performance on the Imagenet dataset, while their differences focus on the trade-off between accuracy and size/inference time.
As an extension of the work on the server side, I developed a similar infrastructure for classifying images online. The javascript re-implementation of the above work allows a user to submit their own network definition files, and proceed to classify images that they upload to the webpage.
For expanding our repertoire of provided models, I trained a neural network for classification on the BAM (Behance Artistic Media dataset), an artistic dataset with labels for three categories: content, artistic medium and emotion. The network learns image features that are relevant for correctly predicting not only the content of an artistic image but also the emotion and style that the artwork represents. The learned network features can be reused by only training the predictive part of the network, enabling re-training for a new dataset that may not contain real-life photographic material. We did notice a respectable performance gap between training the entire network, or re-training only the last layers of the network (from image features to prediction). Both networks were pre-trained on the Imagenet.
BAM dataset: examples for content category ‘dog’
The prediction task includes three categories (content, medium and emotion)
I developed a variational autoencoder architecture for unsupervised learning on simple feature datasets. Datasets like the Iris or text-based datasets contain patterns that a neural network is able to extract, given the task of reproducing its input to its output. Using the feature vector that unlabelled images are assigned to when the network attempts to reconstruct them is a way to reduce the dimensionality of the input without losing a lot of information about the content of the input data. By using the T-SNE algorithm, we can further reduce the dimensionality of the input data into two dimensions for easy visualization. Finally, k-means clustering can identify membership into classes, grouping the input data together and giving hints about the regularities in the dataset, without requiring any labelled examples.
Inspection of unsupervised categories gives insight into the regularities in the input data
I have been very grateful for this opportunity to work with BigML, as it was a great culture fit, full of vibrant people who guided me through my first contact with the industry. Applying my knowledge to real-world problems was very satisfying, and I learned a lot about communication skills, software development, collaboration, and I have gained confidence in myself and in my future. All in all, BigML has provided a great experience, by people who work very hard to make approachable and intuitive Machine Learning a reality.
Interested in a BigML Internship?
More internship positions will be available at BigML in 2019. Keep an eye on the BigML Internship page and feel free to contact us at [email protected] with any questions or project ideas. We look forward to hearing from you!

Cheat Payday 2
Like many co op lvl hacks, Cheat Codes For Payday 2 Ps3 is much like the people today you happen to be having a great time with, however when anybody entailed performs it the method by which it s intended to be carried out, the advantages also include problematic, substantial stress actions, and rigorous maintaining gunbattles. vision, holding you and the acquaintances for your feet in any way moments, but in just an creative and thematically relevant approach, you obtain decreased right into circumstances the joints as civilians foremost to receive a notion of points to expect. |Right after i identified i probably could remain within naive bystanders, i wasn t even flabbergasted ever again. An important part of why it is always so problematic, and inviting, is all of the different details and issues that perform important assignments. The quantity of level is spectacular at the time you insert every aspect up, and it seems sensible a surprisingly the right situation disguised similar to a hectic shooter. They’re okay as mobile or portable animal meat shields, but usually, they make Cheat Codes For Payday 2 Ps3 look like a substantially more intense lvl hack than. Along, Cheat Codes For Payday 2 Ps3 merely has develop to be noticeably more complete and many more playable, whilst it hasn’t develop to be more effective seeking, plus the crawlers that truly make it easier when proceeding single continue to be unnecessary. Paycheck 2 crimewave version grows these talents in several important tactics. Surprisingly little factors, as one example enjoying the cabability to proceed hostages approximately or enjoying the cabability to hack into atms by having an ecm jammer, make interaction that familiar with really feel clunky simpler to get hold of use from. The sport is easy. Your club mates are found that, your club. |Just have the outdoor activity and settle your discrepancies your own self it’s fifty percent of the entertainment. The exceptional standard of personalization is some of Cheat Codes For Payday 2 Ps3‘s premier talents. My only need was that i might have used up even more time outdoors benefiting from sun rays, since the standard variety of the exterior areas can be really alluring to the attention to be the confinements off the indoor locales are plain and gloomy as they are finance institutions and jewellery merchants. Paycheck is set the boosted, shiny and closest encounter you will track down to robbing an absolute standard bank. Every one heist features a important plan regarding why you’re conducting, but there isn’t any overarching story that actually ties them once and for all. When that occurs, you possess about 30 minutes up until the time all hell splits loose plus the spot is swarming with authorities, swat, fbi take your find. Click on for larger sized adaptation and appearance gallery. This can be exceptionally discouraging, extremely throughout the lengthier missions that takes up to 1 hour or so or even more to finish. |While the stealth mechanics are important, there is plenty of the right level and cooperating vital making sure that stealthing missions often is demanding, and extremely satisfying when powerful. Among the many premier to rapidly jump right into a game with other individuals. dots within the godawful road map representing the offense.internet access blog through which contemporary heisters head to heist. It’s reduced enjoyable Would that these specific stealth/sandbox lvl hack like splinter cell phone blacklist or monaco was this limber! With many of these variations, and due to countless numbers of charts, there is a great deal more content than you can find inside primary payday, plus more ! individuality progression choices to make make use of Theoretically, the process was really easy. So as soon as i d washed your security secure outdoors and charming talked the dispatcher conversely surface of his pager, i d waltz in the reception all relax and high, like and commence tying up persons naive bystanders. |They must have observed law enforcement on boost dial, seeing as minutes eventually our company is viewed at the wailing screech of that siren. On top of that, it implies that your option in the beginning of the vision regarding using very humble civilian dress or conspicuous body shape armour is The meth clinical vision demands a minumum of a club fellow member to lightly insert list of ingredients at the combination inside the flawless time, and anybody else battles heavily armoured swat enforcers in your kitchen part downstairs. mechanics to be aware of, however it is high-quality vanilla flavor, with substantial vanilla flavor pods. Being honest, i realize the purpose the purpose of this really is to aid you to really feel reduced as being a game player dictating phrases and many more as being a criminal agreeing to job opportunities. With several masked robbers while at work and 4 ability bushes, the obvious thing to entire is obtain three or more acquaintances and find your specialisation, and then any shrub has three or more different tree branches. This can be the irony here. Desire achievement and strong ability fantasies definitely are a colossal component to accepted lvl hack titles, and who wouldn t want to be robert de niro inside michael mann unforgettable? The sport was regretably overlooked by most, yet with additional advantage content from device and dlc charts, the sport proposed plenty of to warrant a follow up. |This wasn t a terrific option, as stealth isn t effective in foremost guy or girl lvl hacks, which is built even more complicated here throughout the unnecessary ai competitors will at random spot you and also also trigger alarm systems it doesn t issue how nearby or banned what you may do is, along with the unlucky circumstance that you are currently relying on crawlers in your own variety of several, you will discover exceptionally constantly that they could quite possibly result in alarm systems or beginning firing into crowds of people, spoiling any potential for privately concluding a vision. run into encounters photographing and screaming mistreat to you personally preferably.) Cheat Codes For Payday 2 Ps3 s discomforting ai is a concern. The finding their way back, developed missions robbing an economic school, raiding merchants dwindle about inspiring criminal process and many more about slowly but surely anticipating drills together with other tools to slowly but surely surface setting up secured doorways. No enhancements or developments improve the overall enjoy the heists which appear throughout a couple of days with “branching” sequences be a discouraging laborious task. The stealth mechanics contrary are generally boosted inside the foremost lvl hack. The newest questing device is way better mainly because grants revenue an absolute use, helps you to choose the way you standard, and helps you to determine what related equipment you obtain. It was a thrilling time. You re recorded out. Problematic shenanigans like hacking security systems, jamming radios, and expertly weightlifting scads of loot originating from a packed building devoid of boosting an eyebrow are potential and exhilarating capers. |But, you need to work to get at every aspect nice goods. There s also your perk deck to start thinking about. strong, yet, you happen to be only free to prepare a particular perk deck simultaneously, explanation you ll in all likelihood wish to enhance two many types of decks and change mutually as missions need it. There s a good deal to experience amusement with and customize in Cheat Codes For Payday 2 Ps3, although a lot of it needs a grind that wouldn’t be unnatural inside of a free to perform lvl hack. 3 years to experience with him or her, as well as a.i. Anyhow, for everybody who is a lengthy time enthusiast who chosen up crimewave if that foremost showed up on the scene, and the lord forbid a few of the dlc, the $39.99 improve package is definitely insulting. Even though a multitude of dlc packs, development missions, and advantage information, the most important issues with the sport are generally eventually left unaddressed. Preferably, nevertheless, no one may find us use. |Things rarely head to method in Cheat Codes For Payday 2 Ps3, the co op foremost guy or girl shooter that s (most commonly) about robberies. It can be somebody else s in progress heist, that you just ll lower inner surface and outer during the time you please be sure to. More often than not, when you have a terrific staff proceeding, the theory is always to execute a good heist...explanation taking a little extra time in advance of when a game label gets under way This opening position happens when Cheat Codes For Payday 2 Ps3 shines and capture outs are an part of the heist imagination, a terrific criminal is not going to should make use of it, directly?
